You just need to be able to draw more cards than the rest of the decks. It's only a matter of time before they print draw spells stronger than Glimmer, but weaker than Dig Through Time. Azcanta is more suited to prison-style gameplay, but it's a perfect example of how they're starting to trend towards stronger draw engines.
Disclosure I sold my colonnades to play legacy miracle draw-go on mtgo, but Azcanta is crazy good there and it doesn't play any "prison" elements (besides the decks playing counterbalance and those are hardly a majority). I think it's partially because you play enough cantrips that you fill your GY really quickly, and other part you're playing legacy so you're always just hitting something really high power level. 3 mana to select a legacy card every turn (without burning a card) is absurd. I haven't played with azcanta in modern but I can easily see it being less good there.
Modern right now to me just feels like a dice roll simulator where if you want to win you play your favorite fast combo deck and pray your opponent doesn't have the right way to interact with you before you draw your kill. Which is fun in its own way but not really healthy for a 'competitive' game.
Hey all
I've been on Storm for the last year and decided to move over to control, ive tested some control decks (on xmage) and ive nailed my choice down to esper (for obvious reason xD)
Do you guys have any suggestions/stock lists?
I dont have a ton of money to spend but ill prolly get 2 snappy and 3-4 colonnades
(Cards i own are 4 of each blue kahns fetch, 4 path, 4 push, 2 cryptics)
Thx in advance
Popular flex slot choices:
negate
leyline of sanctity
runed halo
detention sphere
blessed alliance
more push
more verdicts
more logic knots
more snaps
spell snare
opt
serum visions
search for azcanta
secure the wastes
white sun's zenith
etc
Your sideboard will vary depending on what you expect to see.
I'd add that 4 Cryptics isn't necessary, at least not in my opinion. I don't think I've ever seen a Wafo list that went down to 3, but it's pretty much universal among other control archetypes and I've been running 3 for half a year, now.

I personally have never been a fan of 4 Cryptic, although a lot of lists run it. I'm also not a fan of 4 Snaps either. I think 2-3 is fine. Before Opt and Field of Ruin I was only running 2 Snaps, as I wanted to make sure Logic Knot was always alive.
4x Snapcaster was so strong that I ran it before Search came out, even alongside 3x Logic Knot. I'm currently testing 3x Search for Azcanta, so I went down to 3x Snapcaster with 0 Logic Knot.
Biggest problem is suddenly having all those mostly-dead graveyard hate cards people bring in against you actually matter. It feels nice to be able to punish those draw, normally.
I love the list, double gearhulk zero secure seems off but perhaps it’s a evolution of the list, not to sure but willing to test the list out.
And discuss.......
Interesting. I cut Think twice when I started testing Search, as well. Torrential Gearhulk sounds awful, as does 7 spot removal spells.
I think his original list must have been Esper since he's running 3x Logic Knot, though. I was scared to run it with Search so I've been trying Mana Leak; I wonder if it's not as greedy as it actually looks.
Kinda feels like he built the deck to punish Humans and other creature decks. That's based off the Push/Path split, anyhow.
What if Gearhulk is secretly OP and that's what made the deck for him? I wanted to try it in UWR because of the burn in the deck. It'd be interesting to see if it's somehow not too slow without it.
I've been thinking about Gearhulk too actually. Definitely a list worth testing. The Push favoring over Path is better against Storm too, but I don't really support it tbh. I really wanna fit another LD land and a Crucible in there too.
The list is pretty good, and since I switched to jeskai I have been enjoying. Having gearhulk as. Solid body plus spell so I can see it being prime in our list cause free charms are the *****.
Not a fan of 4 Boardwipes and only 5 spot removal main. I would rather it be 3 board wipes and 6 spot removal. Also I feel Blessed Alliance is a little better with Snaps. I always swore by Timely, but after Blessed on 2 and then Snap Blessed on 4, I've preferred that.
The sweepers are what's actually good against creatures, though. Against most swarm decks you basically are guaranteed to lose if you don't draw Verdict.
Spent the last week trying out Hearthstone (yes, it's as remedial as it looks) but I'm done with that so I'll have to try this out. Gearhulk probably makes Settle the Wreckage even better, which I've been running maindeck as the 4th sweeper.

Have you played enough with the maindeck Settle to talk a little about it? I meant to test it more, but I've been busy with school and only really play UW and fringey blue Kiki decks when I have free time.

Only 1 league, but it was (anecdotally) great. I did get paired against Mardu and Humans multiple times, that run.
I've watched plenty of UW streamers run it, though. Gabriel Nassif actually smashed a Dredge deck game 1 with it. It's basically better than Verdict if the opponent has manlands, haste creatures, Gideons, pump spell combos (Elves, Infect, Boggles, etc.), Collected Company, basically anything that Verdict can't catch effectively. The other, perhaps bigger, reason to run it is Meddling Mage naming Verdict.
I've not been terribly taken with search so far. Its fine, but its not impressed me here.
I could easily see dropping it and sticking with think twice, but I'm not yet settled.

I think Search for Azcanta is a over-hyped honestly. I think the only deck this fits in is UW do nothing for Modern and Miracles in Legacy. Any other decks trying to force it with Thought Scour, just feels off.
