I love Meddling Mage, it's one of those cards I wish I could use. But the truth is, no...the effect isn't similar. Halo is far better.
Mage is a better effect on the play.
The effects are similar in that they both shut down a single card, but one is more proactive, the other is reactive. Mage Shuts down the card before it enters, Halo can shut it down if it is in play. For this reason Halo is more Versatile. But if the card is in the opponents hand and they can't remove mage, mage is better.
Halo is also useless against countermagic.
And various cards that might wreck you without targeting you, like Living end. But that's if they don't have the beast within.
However, Mage can't stop something already in play, unless it's by blocking. It is also MUCH easier to remove.
Just try out the two cards yourself and you'll see. Again, as a Mage lover, I have to admit it's not even close. Halo can be maindeck material, Mage doesn't even make the cut as a sideboard card.
It's hard to even think of a single MU where Mage is better than Halo.
Against Ad Nauseum Mage would be better, since they don't run allot of removal and most of their hate for mage also hits Halo, but you can beat while they look. You can also call Ad nauseum in the matchup instead of lightning storm if you want to do that as well.
Against living end Mage would also be better, as you can call living end. So when they cascade they can't cast the living end. Whereas with runed halo in the matchup you're forced to call one of their creatures, which won't hinder them as much. Halo will also die to the same removal in this matchup than Mage, beast within.
It's really not that hard to see the pros and cons or each card. Like I said, mage is a proactive card, Halo is reactive.
Edit: Runed Halo IS good, it's a fantastic card. But saying Halo is strictly better than mage in evey matchup is wrong.
That's fine. I mean, If I owned 2-3 Runed Halo I would be running them over the Mage's anyway. It was more just offering alternatives to people who don't own any Halo's. Plus, I can't be angry at someone who also plays RW Norin
I really like membrane because it does a decent job of stopping big eldrazi and stompy creatures.
Scepter is just a thought because it gives a good tempo advantage even if you don't lock with it.
I don't like Cathedral membrane because,
1.) It can be lightning bolted, which isn't something that I would like from a wall.
2.) It will really only kill one Eldrazi creature it blocks.
If it could block say, 2 creatures it would be pretty cool and worth consideration. As it stands, what would you be taking out of the deck to put them in.
For The Scepter, I don't feel like it's a tempo advantage, I think it's more of a disadvantage really. Since you have to spend a turn setting it up. If Modern had orim's Chant then maybe? But you really have to build your deck around it.
hi m8 i always conseder my self a b/w magic player and i play a lot in magic workstation with this list http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=11649&d=266414&f=MO . I really love this deck and i won around the 70% of the games.. my problem tho is taht in order to build it i have to sell my soul :P. So is there any way that i can built a similar working deck without x4 jaces and x4 snapcasters cause those 8 cards cost like 600$ (what a joke?). I mean can i replace them with something?????
In an ojutai's command list sadly you need the jaces & snap. However in Sun titan lists you don't need either of them and you can run resto angel (which you probably like since it's your avatar) with kitchen finks/blade splicer.

On mtgsalvation people don't want to discuss ideas, so I give people something else to discuss: my controversial opinions.
Depending on the build one would play, this could be a great finisher (not even looking at the other side of the card).
She's absolutely amazing and curves beautifully after Restoration Angel.
I wouldn't play her only if I could transform her. What it does do is create a situation where your opponent may not want to block or kill your other creatures to prevent Avacyn from flipping. A 4/4 Flash, Flying, Vigilance is great on its own.
In a deck with Omens, Finks, Resto, etc., it doesn't really negatively affect your board.

First tnx for the reply! I know the titan/emeria list but i dont think that has the same playsryle as the list i post. I titan list is a more value cratures with some blue speels for support and the list i put is pure control in my opinion, but i think that is indeed a bbetter soloution to play a full version of the titan list rather than a budget version(worst) of the control one... Is the titan deck a good one tho? i dont know if it perfoms well i havent seen this deck for ages....!!

The titan list works well, but I always felt it was soft to GY hate. For example it makes Rest in Piece allot worse to board in. I've been enjoying more of a UW Midrange with a Elspeth Sun's Champion and Gideon Finish. Though, I might try Avacyn once I get my hands on her.

Yeah maybe the midrange list is even better, but thisone is even less controllish.. :/ Also i cant find a proper midrange list cause one from the other are very different plus most of them splash for red... can u post ur midrange decklist (btw i really love elspeth and gideon and resto and the midrange runn all of them even tho i think elspeth is a bit slow...)
The reason I like Elspeth in My list, is because she lands and is instantly a threat, pumping out 3 1/1's for blockers by itself is really good. Her wraths don't touch anything you play typically, and her final wins the game. In my opinion she has the same invevitablity as Sun Titan, but doesn't look at your GY for things.
You can make a nice Sun Titan list no problem, I just prefer to use Elspeth as my 6 drop. Once I get home from work I'll work on Posting my list. I have to stop by the card shop and see if they got in the last Colonnade I need.
ok tnx m8. I think that a uw midrage list is the right for me as it has may of the cards i like to play plus it can be decent vs creature base decks and combo... Btw the uw midrange primer is kind of dead...
I personally like the midrange version, but the shell is so versitile you can always cut a couple things and jam in more counters. If I wanted a more control list I would be splashing red for UWr control with snaps, but I don't want to buy them.
As for the Primer for UWx Midrange I feel like both that primer and this one should be merged. But I'm bad at writing up articles and such. My friend who lives on the floor above me wrote up the Living end primer, but he's been playing that deck since Blazing shoal was banned.
I have a friend who's making a UW list that focuses more on control. More counter spells and removal, no Finks or Restoration Angels, six board wipes, and Aetherling and Elspeth as win conditions with Colonnade, of course. He's convinced Aetherling is an hidden gem everyone overlooks and states it's value lays in swinging under an opponents Ensnaring Bridge. He also disapproves of Gideon Jura because he's afraid to tap out for five after a board wipe. If this deck works I will be convinced he's the smartest control player in my local meta.
just no lol, i've tried aetherling in modern and it's wayyy too slow to be viable.
There is not a single thing I can tell him to convince him Aetherling is bad. He says Modern is shaken up and now is a good time for Aetherling. He likes it because it gives the deck a boost against Lantern Control since you can pay four mana to swing under Ensnaring Bridge then pump it for damage. Also, it can be exiled and allow you to board wipe without hurting it.
I think he's just being contrary because I asked him who was a better win wondition between Elspeth, Sun Titan, or Dragonlord Ojutai. There's also Baneslayer Angel and Batterskull but I forgot to mention them.
3 big mama Elspeth? and I thought I was crazy for playing 2. Running 5 land destruction in the form of 4 GQ + 1 Tec and having 4 Spreading Seas really made the deck have a good MU vs Eldrazi especially with Crucible of Worlds back up.

He's afraid to tap out at 5 for Gideon but isn't afraid to tap out at 6 (realistically 7) for aetherling...interesting

He says the opponent may still have options after you board wipe and throw a relevant threat at you at their turn 4 or 5, but once you get to turn 7 their options should be depleted.
I feel like UW control (at least the actual tappout versions) doesn't run enough Instants/sorceries to really control it's flip.
I have to agree here. The shell that UW Control decks usually use doesn't really go hand to hand with Thing in The Ice. Kitchen Finks, Wall of Omens & Restos take a lot of space out of the deck. I mean you could play Gitaxian Probe and Serum Visions in some UW shell but it's kinda awkward. Something like UR can be a fine home for Thing in The Ice with all their cheap spells. That being said, Ojutai's Command is great with it so maybe it can exist in some UWR shell?
David Saucier Therrien, a player from our UWx community, went 10-4-1 with a variation of the deck I built and shared prior to the GP this weekend as a way to tackle Eldrazi, but also versatile enough to compete with the meta. Good job overall. This is a solid record and could have easily been 11-4 or 12-3 with tighter play.
Like Junk and Jund, its strengths lie in its versatility, adaptability, and resiliency. It's a Midrange attrition-based design that is capable of interacting while applying pressure and attacks from various angles. You never feel out of the game and are never locked into a linear gameplan. It rewards skill, knowing your deck, and adapting to various decks in an ever-changing meta. Ultimately, this direction will remain one of the best, and most relevant, for UW in Modern.

Final Thoughts:
"I'm still very happy about the deck. The deck itself felt right in the meta even if i didn't face alot of Eldrazi. I did a lot of testing of this matchup with my friend and I think it's at least 60-40 for us. Overall, I would play this deck again."

the only thing i cant figure out in the deck is the baneslayer angel in the SB.
maybe he expect opponents take out removal, and thats when he shines?
