Hi guys, im picking the deck after a few months and I was thinking about trying Collective Brutality main replacing a disfigure. Anyone had success with it?
Seems like it could be good as the 6th removal/6th discard/lifegain splitcard (Im playing 3 Inquisition 2 Thoughtseize and 1 Slaughter pact, 1 Cut, 1 Go for the throat, 1 Dismember, 1 Disfigure).
Collective Brutality is a pretty sweet card but I don't know that I'd actually want to replace disfigure for it. Black is in a weird spot because we have a wealth of options available to us at 2 mana but we have very little quality removal available at 1. Being able to interact on turn 1 can be pretty crucial sometimes against things like Infect or when you need to bolt the bird.
I think if you run AV in the main the card is nutty, even without AV its good. It allows you to convert extra cards (like extra BB's) into cards. Infect is really the main deck where it is SO much better. Against Burn Brutality is insane, versus decks where you do not want disfigure Brutality has text. It is at the VERY WORST 2 extra BB turns. I think the card is GREAT! I have been testing 2 main and really liking it.

I'm *definitely* on board for Collective Brutality and I'm excited to pick up some copies - I just don't know if the cut you want to make for it is Disfigure.
Antony's new list mislabeled as U/B sword. It is Faeries pretty much without Mistbind and towards his more controlling ideas. I would love to see Damnation in the MB.

Way less faerie synergies but still looks really powerful. I kind of want to try out a list like this.

I don't think they are way too less. Just the Mistbinds which we already expected him to drop anyway. Still 4SSS 4 BB, 2 VC and 4 Muta.
I don't really like the inclusion of swords. I always found it hard to use them in Fae and they were win more, more often than not. I would prefer mainboard mass removal.

I just mean that on a scale of heavy on faerie synergies to light on faerie synergies, this deck is on the farthest end of synergy-light that we would still consider it a faeries deck. You can reasonably expect to play quite a few games with a list like this where your opponent doesn't even know that you're playing something other than a UB midrange list. But yes, still definitely a faeries deck.
The decks deepest on fae synergies are ones that include Mistbind and Scion of Oona. Just my .02.
I like the swords. Abrupt decay isn't super popular in the format right now, and they allow you to take over a board that you've been able to stabilize - something that I've often wished for in my Fae lists (running out of gas once I've stabilized the board - not having bolt stinks sometimes because of the lack of reach). I don't know if it's going to be correct for every deck build, but I look forward to trying them out.
Paul Ritzl's Blue Moon list - Lost 1-2
Bant Eldrazi - Lost 0-2
Howling Mine.deck - Won 1-0
Abzan with Grim Flayer - Lost 1-2
U/W Blink - Draw 1-1
Blue Abzan - Won 2-0
Final record: 2-3-1
Didn't feel too good after this so I opted to change my list for the following day. I moved one kalitas to the board (- 1 damnation) and added another to the board, and removed dismember from main. Instead came in + 1 Snapcaster Mage and + 1 Cryptic Command, all exactly like in Anthony Huynh's build.
Also several people were laughing at me when I played my Extirpate versus Abzan (only boarded in 1!), so/anyway I ended removing all 3 from SB (+ 1 Duress, + 1 gftt + 1 kalitas), relying on kalitas for dredge and cryptic command (!?) versus tron, while also trying to just believe in Anthony Huynh's build.
So for today's pptq (76 players - 7 rounds) I played Anhony Huynh's pptq-winning list (see above in this thread) + 1 ghost quarter as 61st card in the main and 2 negate instead of countersquall in the sideboard.
Rounds:
Grixis Control (Danish Modern Master winner and eventual finalist of this tournament) - Lost 1-2
Thune/Spike Feeder Aggro - Won 2-0
Affinity (Danish wmcq-winner) - Lost 1-2
Infect - Won 2-0
U/W Spirits - Lost 0-2
and then I dropped.
Final record 2-3
Conclusions:
- snapcasters are really great. with 10 1cmc and 4-5 2cmc spells I had no problems with it being a dead card
- I was lacking cards against control, like dispel. Lost to countersqualls and dispels out of Blue Moon and Grixis Control's Sideboard. I see Anthony for his SCG-tourney removed 1 gftt and 1 duress for 2 dispels in the SB, sounds good. But I think only 6 MD removals and 1 damnation and 1 disfigure in SB seems a bit low..??? And duress is good versus tron aswell. So how to get space for 1-2 dispel??
- U/W spirits play the tempo game we would love to be playing with a great 1-drop and several great 2 and 3-drops. damn he crushed me, my answers were no good to all his hexproof stuff and mausoleum wanderers.
- sword of feast and famine was AWESOME in many many situations (so great with manlands!) but for some reason I never got to play sword of light and shadow
- Anthony Hunyh's deck is very controlly, yes, and I have problems with playing too slow myself already (went to time like 60% of all rounds!), but there is something about the list I really like. 3 Snapcaster with 6 discard spells is really something that can mess up other people's plans and 3 cryptics are very versatile. At the same time the deck needs to go tempo/aggro at some point, so I get why he is choosing not to add any Damnations to main and only 1 side. Nvm opponent's board if you can chain cryptics together with snapcaster mage and kill him at the same time!
this is the list I'm testing right now, it feels pretty tight, i'm still trying to decide if i like or mainboard, hence leaving both in for now. it's a pretty good toss up so far though.
edit: fixed decklist, and formatting.
I needed to point this out on the first page, very tight list.
Also thinking about picking fae up again might mess with sultai or esper this time around. If we get a stoneforge unban I'll definitely do esper. Anyone have an Idea of what the sultai list would look like?
The Sultai Splash is primarily going to be for Tarmo and Abrupt Decay. Pendalhaven is an honorably mention, but could still be run in a Dimir list.
Esper gets a lot of things. Path, Zealous Persecution, Blessed Alliance, good sideboard tech, and Spell Queller(actually works! :)). Also Mana Tithe, because they haven't reprinted Force Spike yet.
Things to understand about the esper list is that running Path makes it very difficult to do tempo. You have to out value an opponent that your actively ramping. If your running Path, it might be better to take a control based approach.
2-0 vs Bogles
2-0 vs CoCo
2-0 vs Infect
0-2 vs CoCo
1-2 vs Allies
Got to top8 with tiebreakers.
2-0 vs Allies

The deck worked pretty well and I was happy with it. Never took in Visions from the side, although the decks that I played against felt so fast that I didn't want to stay behind by waiting 4 turns.
Never casted the sword and I afterwards thought about how it would've affected the games if I would have seen one, and came to conclusion that I might change it to something else.
2 - 2 Clique split felt nice, Kalitas won games every time it hit the board. One of Snapcaster was strong and maybe the sword needs to be second Snapcaster.
Pendelhaven was nice. It stabilized the board couple of times against infect and CoCo.
Edit: I want to give credit to Anthonys list which gave me some inspiration on how to build my deck. Even though I wasn't brave enough to cut all the Mistbinds.
totally player preference on mistbinds so yeah I'm glad to see they are still of some use to most of us. to the others..."Traitor"
i feel like snapcaster is good as a 2 of when you want him, but for me he only rebuys discard so the 2nd isnt always needed. The faster matchups may be your deciding factor though. The sword is more of a sb card i think. But also its good to see there is another advocate of liliana of the veil (i feel like I cant play her in this meta right now, but that will change.)

Snapcaster gives a lot of versatility. That's why I wanted to play atleast one. Liliana is a bit tricky to play with. I´ve always liked her and will surely play it atleast in sb. 99% of time I will just -2 +1 -2 and never go for ulti. When I get to remove 2 creatures and 1 card from opponents hand, it feels like I´m so much ahead that the game is just over.
How did you win agains Allies??? I just can't do that.
Removing the right pieces works wonders. I focused on the lifelink creatures, then those which give protection from colors. Damnation helps to stabilize and then you can race the deck. Atleast that's what I did.

I am back again with two (this time brief) tourney-reports from my 2nd and 3rd Modern tournaments ever - yesterday modern FNM and today Modern PPTQ.

1 sword of feast and famine
Sideboard:
