At cmc5 Shattering Spree destroys 5 artifacts which is usually ALL your opponent artifacts
Shattering Spree gets constantly better, Vandalblast still destroys 1artifact whether you have 2 or 4 mana
Shattering Spree gets through counter, paying one mana more
Shattering Spree is always castable since we are running more than 20 red mana sources, the RRRR isn't hard to pay
I never thought about that before. The uncounterablitiy isn't generally relevant in my opinion, but casting Shattering Spree on T2/3 to hit key artifacts is probably better than Vandelblast on those turns.
Another good point. I'll throw it in the board this weekend over smash to Smithereens tonight and see how it turns out. I lose the instant speed ability to destroy cranial plating but I'll still have 8 other instant speed removal spells to hit the Ornithopters/Inkmoths.
I don't wanna cut shatterstorm simply because it hits everything for 4 mana.
he sideboard is definitely up in the air but I ditched the reckoner plan for the Pia as well as the Hangarback and the Wurmcoil. Hopefully this works ok
So this was my list posted a bit earlier and I was looking for some feedback on it because it's a little different than some of the builds you guys are proposing. The side is undecided really but I'm looking for some input on the main with regards to ratios on Pia and Kiran and Wurmcoil etc. I wasn't sure about playing 4 of Pia and Kiran
Is Blasphemous Act worth a main deck spot without the Reckoner synergy?
Also, I haven't played the Nalaar build, but it seems like you always want Chandra parents in play. Even casting one with one in play nets you two more thopters.
You know I was thinking the same thing, because without reckoner the Blasphemous Act might not be that great main anymore. I think I will just add a third Pia and Kiran instead because you always want to see them. Thanks!

I like Pia and Kiran a lot, it's just really versatile. I still don't like playing a bunch of copies because it's a legend and while it's versatile, it's also just 4/4 of stats that will die to your own sweepers. I run two copies and one Thunderbreak Regent alongside Koth for my 4-drop slot. Thunderbreak seems ok.
I think your manabase needs to be bigger. 22 lands and 2 mindstones is not going to be able to cast 5 and 6 drops reliably. I'd go +1 mindstone and +1 scrying sheets. Magma Jet seems like an easy cut for them, it's the least efficient of your removal spells and I think overloading on cheap removal can hurt the deck. You're already favored against zoo/affinity/whatever without the jets and it's just another dead card against slow decks and combos.
Have you thought about subbing any of your volcanic Fallouts with Anger or Kozelek's Return? I don't think there's an optimal split but it's nice to have diversified answers to threats.
I agree with everyone about Blasphemous Act being weak without the Reckoners (and I agree with you that Reckoner isn't very good right now). Might be good enough for one sideboard copy depending on your meta.
What matchups/threats are combust and surgical extraction for?
GAME1 VS GW-ENCHANTRESS (2:1)- some interesting stuff, Ramp and Sigil of the Empty Throne as win condition.
Match1: hes talking bout having an good Matchup vs me - 5turns later I got 2 Stormbreath Dragons vs 10 flying 4/4 white angels and just attack through, killing him.
Match2: was not fast enough, no landhate, he Oblivion Ringed my Koth, flooded... meh.
Match3: ... after some swings hes on 3hp, with 2x Sphere of Safety on his Side... i have to pay 18mana to attack him... he has around 6 4/4 flying angels... i go t 7mana, "uhm, how many cards you have in your hand...3?...Monstrosity, gg".
-> was feared cause of not having Ratchet Bombs with me but Stormbreath sealed the deal.
GAME2 VS JUND (2:1)
Match1:I got simply wrecked by Discard...
Match2:Turn1 Mountain, go! Turn1 Wooded Foothills, go! Turn2, Exile SSG, Blood Moon, uhm ok - after that i heard 6 times "land go" and simply won - Blood Moon T2 is free win.
Match3: Hes flooded, not much to say.
-> Boarded Stormbreath Dragons out, went the Landhateway with Molten Rain and Crumble to Dust, still Koth and Relic of Progenitus were Matchwinner vs Jund.
GAME3 vs 5-Color-Planeswalker (1:2) - Oath of Nissa ... dafuq?
Match1: 2 resolved Stormbreaths vs Restoration Angels... gg easy
Match2: had to deal with an early Ajani Vengeant not letting my lands untap, making me not able to play dragons...when i had lethal on the board i went into Wrath of God...
Match3: ... so many walkers... one resolved Kor Firewalker, Beast within vs my Stormbreath, Elspeth getting him creatures, another elspeth getting him 14life... times hard, kor firewalker simply attacked me 8times, lose.
-> Interesting Deck, funny to play against, still Kor Firewalker just too stronk and not a single pyrite (of 4) drawn by me.
GAME4 vs Kiki-Chord (2:1)
-> Short way, Anger of the Gods + Goblin Dark-Dwellers into Anger of the Gods making his whole strategy to looping chord, witness, chord, reveillark-stuff not work.
He cant deal with Stormbreath, gg.
-> Expect Kiki to Combo, ... Chord makes an awesome toolbox and his combo will hit anytime you don't expect it.
Dumb question , but which Snow-Covered Mountain has your favorite art? I'm partial to the Coldsnap version because of that dragon you can see in the art.
I like the original because I like the old style frames instead of modern frames...although judge calls are made on the interaction between them and Skred (Judge, are those snow perminants?) and Blood Moon (Judge, aren't those regular mountains now because Snow-Covered isn't basic?)

You know, last night I tested a lot against a bunch of different decks and I agree with a lot of your points. Anger is something I would have liked so I think I'll give a couple of those a try. Pia and Kiran at 2 seems right to me now after my testing.
I found the Mana to actually be quite consistent and was very comfortable with what I was seeing, but because I didn't like Magma Jet at all I might try your suggestions anyway just to have another cantrip and sheets is great.
The Blasphemous Act was very meh so I believe I'll take that out for something else in the main, maybe find room in the Sideboard if my local store meta demands it.
Surgical is in the Sideboard for things like tron or eldrazi to get rid of some key lands, and against other rogue decks where a key card would cripple their strategy. Combust is just there in case I run into some blue decks and I just felt the Sideboard didn't have any removal answers for any blue deck with Creatures I could rely on. Twin is gone now so it may not be as relevant.

Yea now that twin is gone, I don't think there's much reason for it. I ran rending volleys before the ban and it always felt awful having so much sideboard space taken up by removal spells when my deck was mostly removal to begin with.
I'd rather play Crumble or Molten Rain to give you some more land hate. People are going to sideboard in answer to blood moon game 2 so you can't count on it as much.

I watched a little bit and had to go, so if you watched the whole thing do you have a bit of a summary for us?
Modern one because of how nice it is in foil. Seriously, have you seen it? It is amazing, the foiling process gives it this beautiful 3D effect, and there is also "foil snow" on the textbox.

He essentially talked about adding another color. White, blue and black where his top contenders, green not so much.
He also considered adding colorless eldrazi cards.
He says that blood moon was still fine, but not the greatest.
The colorless eldrazi is what he wanted to try to build next.
I personally like a white splash for sideboard cards and for Ajani and helix main, and is the version I'm close to building. I just have to figure out a list. I don't like path if you want to stay on blood moon since it gets them basics. It can answer big things though.

there wasn't really much to it. he gave some ideas for splash color cards. thinks that either black (for discard and destruction), blue (for keranos and counters) and eldrazi are the way to go.
i'm still trying to figure out what the best version of mono red to play would be. i have double dragon with some land destruction main. i have an IQ in 2 weeks to go to.

I dunno, being only red helps us stay really consistent, and I am not sure I want to cut a lot of cards from this deck to make room for another color... Tough decision
i agree. i thought going black before was worth it but honestly, it might be a tough thing. white seems promising (ajani vengent, path, stony silence, etc) but then you're cutting your land base down by 4 for fetches. it's a tough choice.
*** = would/should/probably will change them with mind stones. i feel like this is a tight list. i don't get much chance to test due to work/not much modern played near me. i hope it does well at the IQ.
