@toroks The pro of Martyr/Serra lists is, of course, the potential for a 6/6 lifelink creature on turn 2 to steal unfavorable matchups. However, the popularity of Fatal Push has decreased the power of Serra in general, especially when you are trying to activate it in later turns. Also, the combo is never guaranteed and drawing a serra or martyr by themselves in later turns is usually lackluster.
The pro for lists like Lepore's is the ability to add specific hate cards/add additional copies of powerful cards like Archangel and Auriok Champion, and in the linked list, Mirran Crusader and Worship. As a result, these types of decks are usually more streamlined and consistent since they don't have to deal with often dead cards later in the game. While you don't have the potential to to steal games with the combo, only a few decks right now are weak to it, like Eldrazi Tron, Counters Company, and maybe Scapeshift (Just skimming through the most popular decks). Depending on your meta, a more consistent main deck with more access to hate cards may be more appealing.
@toroks Martyr of sands gets worse as the game goes long, because you ussually dont have much of a hand. So Martyr becomes a liability. Ascendant most of the game is just a 1/1 w/ lifelink. It CAN get bigger but it is often dealt with if your opponent is able.
Fatal Push has hurt their value long turn in the deck.
Potato pretty much nailed it - Martyr into Serra is the best way to kill decks that need to be killed quickly - Storm game 1, Tron, Scapeshift. Serra also, with Ranger, gives you a fetchable win condition if you meet the life total. It's not very good in the meta because Fatal Push is such a beating against us and it's often a 1/1.
Today I went 3-1.
1. Bant Company. Game 1 was pretty long. My Champion and Pridemate caught Paths. My opp had 3 Knight of the Reliquary. Each 19/19. And I can't find Path or Genesis Chamber to block. Lost.
2. Eldrazi and Taxes. Game 1 win by Blood Moon. Game 2 lost to hand disruption and lack of threats. Game 3 I had the board and found Genesis. Easy.
3. Ad Nauseam. My nightmare. Game 1 I kept aggressive hand with Blood Moon. Win. Game 2 I kept aggressive hand and found sideboard cards. So happy.
4. Merfolks. Game 1 I saved my removal for lodrs. Bid cats and Champions did their things. Game 2 lost to weak hand and explosive start from my opp. Game 3 was long and grindy. I champed with tokens as long as I could. He spent 3 Gutshots for my Sisters. I topdecked Return and kill him on risky backswing.
I'm not telling you to get out of here or anything, so please don't take it that way, but there is a dedicated Norin Sisters thread. Those guys have more knowledge about the deck than we do and could probably give you more help and discussion!
Loss vs G/R Shaman Deck
1-2
Good match up but my deck had mana issues and it cost me. I felt I played a great game over all. Game 1 win Pridemate and Ascendant hand full of sisters.
Game 2 loss had strong hand but got flooded when I needed gas. Had a field of 2/2.
Game 3 kept hand of sister, pridemate, aurik, honor, ascendant, plains, spectral procession. Got stuck on 1 land till turn 4 hit heights (lol) tucked lingering souls. I cast Aurik , he follows with destoying my heights. I dont land another mana till turn 8 ghost quarter. Wore me down and finished me off. Always felt like I could recover the whole game. The more creatures he put out the longer I stay in it.
Match 2 vs Boggles
2-0
game 1 He creates a manageable monster 9/9 hexproof unblockable. I take damage but regain enough life to stay I sister to pridemate to martyr to spectral procession to spectral procession.
Game 2 win, crack fetch, sister , into pridemate, cast sister t3 hold up 2 open mana for Blessed allinace cast on his attack. destroying his Super Elf. GG
Match 3 vs RUG
0-2
G1 went Long. I conside at 71 life down from 89. His life at 4. Board state 3 serra ascendants, 3 sister, 2 spirits, 2 honor the pure. His side Stormbreath Dragon monsterous, Snap caster, Eternal witness, tamiyo planeswalker, kiora planeswalker, Emblem return spells from grave to hand, emblem create a 9/9 kraken, cryptic command in hand. he locks down my creatures, counters my spells. 30+ minutes off of the clock. I suppose I could have tried decking him out.
G2 15 minutes on clock. Strong hand 2 pridemates, sister, aurik, spectral, fetch land, plains. Draw fetch land. Play sister, to aurik, to t3 pridemate, bolted while counters on stack. t4 Pridemate bolted with counters on stack. His t1-3 hes cantriping and shock fetching T4 he casts huntmaster of the fells. T5 I cast spectral procession. t6 honor the pure is counterspelled. I chip at his life total but huntmaster keeps him alive. He casts Anger of the gods, and drops Goyf 5/6, then follows next turn with another goyf. I had him at 5 life before he angered.
Both games were fun, and interesting.
Unsure of sideboard for this match. o/ mikey, ghost quarter I/2 blessed alliance maybe.
Overall all the games felt win able. Even the shaman match up with mana screw. Bad variance on those games. RUG deck still continues to be a hard time.
I think this is the third match up and have not won a series yet.
Interesting meta. One of my big frustrations with Sisters is that it can sometimes lose to non-tier decks that we're just too linear to fight, particularly with UB Mill doing really well at the recent Modern event. If we can fetch, there may be a small benefit to the Squadron Hawk/Mistveil Plains plan to consistently generate clocks and not lose to decks going for mill kills.
Oh, my mistake I was the one going for the mill kill play. Against the RUG deck. His deck was a "Best of Fun Stuff I Like To Play" deck. All great cards that just add value to each play. Quirky deck. Sometimes it plays midgame aggro, sometimes it plays as control combo.
As my pieces were getting locked down I figured that I could out last his draws. I drew 3 extra times from fetchlands, drew 2 Ascendants off of ranger.
I ghost quartered him 3 times, pathed to exiled him 2 times, he drew 4 cards off cantrips, 3 cards off cryptic command, plus 2-3 fecthlands himself. Both our library's' were thin I guess mine at 30 or less his at 25, maybe.
I scooped so we could play another game. I figured I had 5-6 more rounds, I could have found the second martyr and forced him to double cast counterspells to get martyr out with full hand. Sad game plan.
During last week's Tuesday Modern night I got 0-2 by Amulet Titan, but I feel it should be a reasonable matchup.
Unfortunately my mirran crusader are still in the mail. (My local meta is very heavy into green). Any tips other than keep paths for Prime Time? What should I target with ghost quarter? I was thinking the haste enabling land.(I forget the name at the moment)
I lost to this deck. First game quick defeat. Second game went longer but I did not take good notes.
If you play Aven Mindcensor that card would do some good work. I tried going wide and my stuff got taken out. The deck is quick at ramping.
The cats can trade but they get there things faster than we do. Martyr to Serra Ascendant seems solid if you can get it quick enough. Slayers' Stronghold Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion Tolaria West simic growth chamber are the worst land offenders. Amulet of vigor allows them to abuse the lands. so some artifact hate may go well. There only removal seems to be engeneered explosives and walking ballista.
There deck can do large amounts of damage with double strike.
so In
Blessed alliance
Wrath of god
sundering growth
Mirrian crusader
4 ghost quarters
Aven mindcensor
Banishing light looks nice but no flash. Might want something Instant speed.
Edit: nevermore targeting their Beast that kills things ETB, and Ilaxian binding targeting Prime time. Not instant but I think it makes up for it. Worship might work well in this match up also, or if you like spending money the new gideon of the trials
well thats what I dream-pt up
Match 2 Boggles
2-0
g1 Martyr into ascendant turn 3-4
g2 spirits with honor pressured him with cat early, Elspeth landed for +3/+3 to finish
I/ 2 blessed alliance, sundering growth
O/ ghost quarter, path to exile, Mikey the Lunarch
Match 3 Burn
2-1
g1 quick win, he played 2 edilon the great revival and burned himself while I played high drops around it.
g2 burned my life gain dropped two honor the pure, got me to 6 life with 2 burn in suspend and 2 guys on field.
g3 Hes stuck on 2 mana as I go wide and weak. He keeps me off lifegain but I still hit with weenies for win.
Match 4 Storm
2-1
G1- Ascendant for win by sisters and tokens
g2- I miss play and dont drop Rest in piece. turn 2-4 He remands my spectral to pump my cat. He storms off T4. I got greedy and wanted more stuff on table and in grave before i cast RIP. My mana was funky with off color lands which affected my play choices.
g3- Mana funky again plains, swamp, draw 2 GQ. Aurik, cat, sister, rest in piece. I drop RIP T2 I Quarter my other Quarter for a plain. He has trouble working around the RIP. I gain enough tempo and life to ascendant for win. EDIT Looking back it was spirits with honor the pure that won that game. Ascendant showed up but was bounced as were a few spirits and RIP but I was able to just replay them next turn.
Game 1
2 - 0 vs Boros deck wins
Not much to say here. This was a very badly constructed deck using cards that was 90% standard legal.
Match 2
2-0 vs 5 colour goodstuff death shadow.
I over heard between matches that he was running 5 colour good stuff with a tasigur and Death Shaddow package. The first game, I had windbrisk, Ariok, Spectral, Spectral , Plains, Plains, Plains. My opponent shocked himself a fair bit, and I hit Honor of the pure on windbrisk. My opponent had a fair amount of spot removal, but it wasn’t enough, my spectral processions got me the win on turn 5.
Side in 3x Mirran Crusader, 2x Rest in Peace, 2x Aven Mindsensor
Side out , 2x Rangers, 3x Thraban, 1x Attendent, 1x Warden
Game 2, I got a turn 3 aven mindsensor. It died on turn 4, but my Ghost quarters were able to keep my opponent down in lands since the greedy man abase only had him running 1 basic land. I was able to keep them starved of mana enough to doge sweepers, and I closed out the game by turning my creatures sideways.
Match 3
2-1 vs elves
First game started off well, with me getting to 32 life and dropping my opponent to 4 life. Then my opponent casts CoCo, gets Ezuri Renegade Leader and a second Elvish Archdruid. Procedes to pump and hit me for 45 damage.
Side out: Ranger x2, Thraban x3
Side in: 3x Mirran Crusader, 2x Aven Mindsesor
Game 2: I mulligan to 5 cards(sister, sister, legion’s landing, windbrisk, plains) scry into Spectral procession. On my first turn I get Archangel of Thune under windbrisk. From there, I proceed to get bigger faster than the elves, and deliver a quick beatdown. The Legions’ landing’s token did yeomen’s work on this matchup since it helped pump the rest of the board with Archangel, but it would shine best in game 3
Game 3: I started with a decent hand and time was getting close, so I kept. I was applying pressure during the game. When time was announced, I attacked for lethal with most of my stuff. Before damage, my opponent chorded for Kami of False hope. I then I cast a second archangel of Thune from windbrisk and got ready for the crack back pumped by Ezuri. During the going to attackers step, I created a Vampire token. That saved me the game, I threw a 5/5 sister, new Vampire token (now 3/3 due to two archangels on the field) and my freshly cast Archangel under the bus, but with the extra toughness and lifelink, I barely survived. I cracked back and won.
Match 4
1-2 vs grixis control
I won the first game, quite easily. Opponent had spot removal, and I got wider faster than they could zap my creatures.
In: RIPx2, Mirran Crusader x3
Out: Thraban x3, Ranger x2 (With 24h reflection, I think I should have taken out an attendant and a warden instead)
Games 2 and 3 were a slaughter. I couldn’t get anything to stick on the board. Game 2 I lost to Pia and Kiran Nalaar and tokens, game 3 via Liliana the Last Hope’s zombie swarm.
Overall, I came in 3rd of 12. There’s a few places where I played a bit sloppily, but overall, I think that the deck has potential and I was really pleased at Legion's Landing.
Glad to hear your successes. Would 1 anointed procession be of value in your deck? I was working on a similar list but never played it because I need the cards for standard that I don't actually play.
I also think that worship with flipped legion's landing would be outstanding in some match ups. Have you considered that?
I do not have any advise on what to cut though LOL Im sorry. I was going to cut martyr of sands and Serra Ascendant from my list but they did such a great job this Friday.
So I'm looking to assemble a more traditional SS deck (I have a derpy Monumental Sisters deck I'm going to test when I get a chance to go to the next FNM: Monumental Sisters), but I can't decide what kind of build I want.
Any recommendations?
Side notes: Not opposed to color splashes (though not going the Norin route yet), and I do have Bitterblossoms already (I play rogues).
Also, these have probably been discussed before somewhere in the 178 pages, but new-to-Souls decision questions:

I'll have to think about anointed procession, but right now I'm leaning on no. It's a 4 drop that does 2 1/1 life linking vampires on turn 4 in magical Christmas land. While good in grindy games, I currently of the opinion that this this turns wins into blow-outs and might convert a few wins into losses.
As for worship, I did not consider that card. I think I might try to jam 2 of them into my sideboard. The question is what to cut...
Since my store has zero affinity players at the moment, I might temporarily cut Stony, but that goes back in the minute I see artifact creatures.

Also, these have probably been discussed before somewhere in the 178 pages, but new-to-Souls decision questions:
1) I run 4. I like the interaction with Legion's Landing since it also has the 3 attacking creatures condition, it provides "free" mana for a combat trick or Archangel of Thune. If you're playing the Archangels, I say that 4 gives you more chances on cheating it out.
2) I have it in the side, at 3cmc I don't really like it in the main.
3) I'm currently running 4. The amount should depend on your meta.
4) I don't play them a the moment
5) I love this card, and run 3. It's "Free" mana for windbrisk. Ramps for Archangels. When deck building I count it as .5W.
6) I run Archangel without Serra. I find that this sacrifices the explosive start for a much better grind game against creature decks. Also, whitout Martyr/Proc it can be hard to keep your life total above 30. I would say that while there's a large overlap between the card lists, the games play out very differently.
7) Can't say, I haven't tried this card. But the ramp given by legion's landing might make it more playable than it was. However, note that the two attacking 2/1s won't trigger Windswept and Legion's Landing.
8) I run 2 in the sideboard. Very punishing on Combo and greedy fetch manabases. I wouldn't leave home without 2 in the sideboard.
@Thelordofelba nice deck. I'm thinking of putting together a soul sisters deck (add to the pile :p) after seeing the iconic masters spoilers and also stream series Rogue Deckbuilder did with Legion's Landing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOzpvpbkNZY&feature=youtu.be
Main difference in your list is swapping Serra Ascendant for Thraben Inspector. Of course he always plays 4 flagstones (needs reprint) but those cost a fortune for minor value with ghost quarter and otherwise only helps really against smallpox. Also you have the path's MB for more interaction, which I like.
Serra was worst card he ran (no martyr in list) so that seems like a good replacement at least providing value and a better 2/3 blocker with Honor of the pure in play. Sundering growth looks like sweet tech in SB also. Few questions:
Wouldn't a 3rd Archangel in 75 be worth it though due to the 4 Windbrisk Heaights and legion's flip ramp?
Do you tend to side out Thraben when bringing in stony silence? (turning off clues)
What is Banishing Light for in SB? Ensnaring Bridge and Planeswalkers?

Thanks. I find it a blast to play.
1) Yes it probably would. I only own 2 AA of Tune at the moment. That's why I run 2. I can see myself picking up a third angel in the next few months.
2) Yes. The Thrabans are there for their gas value as well as their larger butts. It's true that they nombo with Stony Silence, but I remember a few games where I made the call of keeping the Thrabans with Stony. It depends if you see Thraban as primarily a blocker or gas generator in the match-up.
3) Mostly because I started with a budget list and they ended up being useful ambush cards since nobody expected them. I haven't really found a replacement for them. But to be honest I don't know if I'll still be running them in the 15 by then end of November.
1. I only run 2 Heights. They are a bit ruff in opening hands when your short mana, and can be annoying if you need untapped mana on a draw. Also they dont always grab something awesome in the hideaway (your opponent wont know). A better question might be how many Hieghts would you like to see show up in one game?
2. I tried it main, but 3 cmc is a tight spot in my deck and its not always the best card in every match up. So SB.
3. I run 2. I'm very impressed with them. Red is prominent in my meta. The double white has been an issue when a regular sister would do just fine.
Main board. Some decks run 4 main.
4. I do not run any of these. Brave looks best?
5. I would play 4 but I could see 3. I would not count it as a land but a bonus land (it may not flip).
6. you can run both, but the card count gets tight. Ascendants Need 30 life which benfits from a fast lifegain system early. Thune needs 5 mana so it comes out late and works with a grinder game that it shuts down fast. Archangel needs a higher mana count and a longer game plan. Ascendant can fit any game plan but works better with Martyr & full hand.
7. never played it.
8.Been great in other decks against CO-CO, and Tron. I side boarded it for a while but it lost its slot to other more versatile cards. If my meta changes I might put it back.
@Thelordfelba if waiting on iconic for the Thune(s) I think it'll drop to 10$ after a month. Auriok hasn't fallen as much as its new art is pretty bad IMO. I do think is playing playset of windbrisk you want to have as many bombs as possible without ruining the deck curve. From the stream I referenced the best play was spectral procession to flip LL and/or activate Windbrisk. Turn 3 procession, turn 4 play land attack flip LL and hardcast Thune is also a great play.
@WickedApp I agree the 1 of worship in SB could be interesting with LL. Could be good against Simic Merfolk, Humans, Storm, Valaakut, DS

I also think that worship with flipped legion's landing would be outstanding in some match ups. Have you considered that?
I do not have any advise on what to cut though LOL Im sorry. I was going to cut martyr of sands and Serra Ascendant from my list but they did such a great job this Friday.
Any recommendations?
Side notes: Not opposed to color splashes (though not going the Norin route yet), and I do have Bitterblossoms already (I play rogues).
Also, these have probably been discussed before somewhere in the 178 pages, but new-to-Souls decision questions:
1. What's the value of running a playset of Windbrisk Heights as opposed to just 2-3?
2. Mirran Crusader is meta-dependent, but main or side?
3. Auriok Champion main or side? And how many?
4. Mark of Asylum, Burrenton Forge-Tender, or Brave the Elements?
5. Playset/Three-of Legion's Landing? And how would that factor in to the land count?
6. Should you run Archangel of Thune and Serra Ascendant in the same deck?
7. How helpful is Hero of Bladehold? Maybe as a one-of?
8. Aven Mindcensor?
I'll have to think about anointed procession, but right now I'm leaning on no. It's a 4 drop that does 2 1/1 life linking vampires on turn 4 in magical Christmas land. While good in grindy games, I currently of the opinion that this this turns wins into blow-outs and might convert a few wins into losses.
As for worship, I did not consider that card. I think I might try to jam 2 of them into my sideboard. The question is what to cut...
Since my store has zero affinity players at the moment, I might temporarily cut Stony, but that goes back in the minute I see artifact creatures.
@WickedApp I agree the 1 of worship in SB could be interesting with LL. Could be good against Simic Merfolk, Humans, Storm, Valaakut, DS
