His explanation was given during the deck tech after the pre recorded replay against tron. I honestly think he doesn't care about winning more than giving fringe decks some exposure and having fun with them.
Round 1 Grixis Twin
Eay lock g1, game 2&3 turn 5 Keranos. Was barely keeping above water, but too much Spellskite removal. 1-2
Round 2 Burn
Opp piloted poorly, easy games. 2-0
Round 3 Burn
Nacatle into Guide x 3. Game 2 got Bridge, but opp got too much non-redirectable burn before I could get Droplet. 0-2
Round 4 UR Twin
Easy g1, game 2 lost to Shatterstorm. G3 stabilize w/ Bridge after Duress on Chalice & Needle on Explosives. Proceed to draw 7 lands & 3 Opals. 1-2
Round 5 Grixis Twin
Regular games, 2-0.
Round 6 opp ghost dropped. Played D&T for fun, 2-1, dropped. Wife & kids came with me, so went to hang out with them
But, holy crap the bad luck. Got to meet super cool ppl from the thread and other random ppl
Maybe next time. My list is same as one in my sig, -1 Noxious, -1 Gorge, +1 Opal, +1 Burnwillows (thanks Zac!).
Mostly due to budget. I ran 1 grove instead of 1 gorge today, and the one time it could possibly have made a difference, it didn't. Spending the extra money isn't worth it. If you already have 1 or can borrow 1, then sure, otherwise it's not worth it.
I do have an accepted build and have used it. I just feel that I need to focus on life gain for burn match ups in game 1. I used to have a Sun Droplet and Ghirapur Aether Grid for the Fountain of Youth and Moratorium slots as well as Ghost Quarter for Duskmantle, House of Shadow. I just feel a life gain strategy in game 1 would be advantageous. I haven't tried Sunbeam Spellbomb but my initial evaluation on it is not good as supported by some comments on this forum. I honestly think that the FoY is not cute, maybe the MS but not FoY. I do not have MS yet so Aether Grid still fills up that spot but I think more than its first ability we can benefit a lot with its second ability.
Duskmantle is used in some builds albeit sacrificing land destruction and possible library shuffle.
I had practice games yesterday against: USA/Jeskai Control, Soul Sisters and UW brew with Venser, Karn, Sun Titan deck.
USA/Jeskai Control - G1: Got the lock and my opponent understood the Pyrite Spellbomb loop. G2: I forgot to sb Grafdigger's Cage. I don't know how to sb against the deck. I remember bringing in disenchant effects for Keranos, God of Storms and the welding jars. I had second thoughts on the Sun Droplets but I guess they should have been boarded and I should have left out the jars. I lost to the opponent's burn spells. G3: I had issues with mana as I only had 1 land and an Opal. I got Lantern and bridge in play but the mill rocks came in late. A bell showed up before the last 5 turns. It was a draw but this could have been a win had I made the necessary sb on G2.
Soul Sisters - G1: The moment I saw a sister on G1 I know it was a good match up. He doesn't have an answer on Bridge for G1. G2: I had an early control as I had bridge on my opening hand and got the lock early. He played a Rest In Peace but I had an Abrupt Decay for it. He conceded after I milled out Suppression Field.
UW Brew - G1: I am not sure if this is a traditional UW Control but with my limited Modern experience I can say that this is a brew. I had the lock but only have 1 mill rock. He had 2 consecutive answers on top of his Library so I had to sac Lantern. He top decked a Karn Liberated which allowed him to exile bridge and attack with Sun Titan. G2: Another lock but he was able to ultimate Venser, the Sojourner so I conceded. After the game I realized that I shouldn't have boarded out the spellbombs as they are my only answer to his planeswalkers aside from needle.
Tip for people that don't know. Copperline Gorge comes in untapped when you have 2 lands in play and Copperline is your 3rd land. For Sam it might not have mattered but there might be a critical early game time where it might be relevant.
I've updated the list in my signature. I'm going to try -1 Aether Grid again and +1 Duress MD (7th discard). I feel like it could potentially be better vs key matchups in the main than Grid. Matchups like Tron, Scapeshift, Burn, Jund, etc. And in the Sideboard, I swapped -1 Duress for +1 Nature's Claim. It's good in many of the same matchups and others (Affinity, mirror).
Buried Ruin was a do nothing pile of trash all day, so I'll be looking elsewhere for the flexspot.
Rounds 1 and 2 - Byes
2-0
Round 3 - Mardu Burn, 0-2
My opening hand game 1 was quite good with a bridge, a bell, a shredder, and a lantern, but my opponent's hand was 2 land and all burn and I couldn't keep him off the last 3 points. In game 2, I ended up mulling to 5, kept an opener of leyline, duress, glimmervoid, opal, wastes. The duress revealed 2 goblin guide, 2 swiftspear, 2 mountain, and an eidolon... I died shortly there after.
2-1
Round 4: Jund, 0-2
This was a great match even though I came up on the losing end of a key kolaghan's command in game 1 and a blind top decked huntmaster when I was at 2 life after I chose to make him shuffle a bolt away as well as hitting 3 lands in a row on top of my library during my upkeep. Sometimes you just have bad breaks.
2-2
At this point I was feeling very anxious knowing I had to win the next 5 rounds to make day 2, but I was confidant that I could do it if I could just dodge burn.
Round 5 - No Show, 2-0
Opponent didn't show after 10 minutes, free win.
3-2
Round 6 - Abzan Company, 1-2
I had my opponent locked in game 1 except for a collected company I couldn't get out of his hand. That collected company found him the melira and redcap he needed to instakill me. In game 2, same deal as above except his coco found him squat and he scooped after I milled his redcap. Game 3 I had to mulligan to 5 and I kept a hand of 2 glimmervoid, thoughtseize, bell, opal. I played opal, then bell and passed, while he only played a land and passed. On the next turn I drew a bridge and my thoughtseize took an abrupt decay, leaving him with another decay 3 land and 2 coco. He killed my bell and passed, then I drew another opal and passed. My opponent went on to draw, look at me with disbelief and played a pridemage, killing my opal and triggering my voids end of turn, I lose a few turns later after bricking on land.
3-3
So now I'm officially out of day 2 contention and I'm quite disappointed, but I decide to play it out and see if I can eek out a better than .500 tournament.
Round 7 - Abzan Kiki, 0-2
My opener consisted of a bell, a lantern and a bridge with an opal and 2 land. My opponent inquisitioned me turn 1, took my bridge and comboed me with angel and kiki before I could find another. Game 2 consisted of a turn 2 stony silence into a turn 3 kataki, into a turn 4 pridemage, probably the best curve ever against us, lol.
3-4
Round 8 - Burn, 2-1
Game 1 I got burned out rather quickly as they tend to do, but in games 2 and 3 I hit turn 0 leyline, turn 1 lantern, turn 2 mill rocks, turn 3 bridge and kept him off wear/tear and revelry. I love beating burn, always feels like sweet retribution, lol.
4-4
Round 9 - Infect, 2-1
Game 1 was very strange as we both mulled to 4, but my opener had 2 inquisition, a wastes and a shredder, while his opener had a forest, a heirarch, an agent and a mutagenic. He played the heirarch and passed, then I drew a glimmervloid and took his agent revealing that he had drawn a pool. He played the pool and swung for 1, then passed. I drew a bridge and took a vines off the 2nd inquisition, then played the shredder and passed. He drew and played an inkmoth and swung for another 1 then I drew a ghost quarter, slammed bridge and he conceded a few turns later after I drew a lantern and an abrupt decay for his heirarch. Game 2 I was always on the back foot and wasn't able to keep a bridge in play and was poisoned out shortly after as a result, but game 3 went according to plan and I was able to strip him of all his creatures with some discard and mill rocks while having inkmoth nexus named on the only needle I kept in.
5-4
So I was able to manage a winning record, though I wish I had done better, but there is alway the next one.
I wanted to see how far Lantern Control can go in the hands of its best pilot, tbh. Multiple Grand Prix titles? A Pro Tour Top 8 / Win?

Good luck! Got a report on the matchups?
Is there any other Lantern player on Day 2 that you know of?

Any info on the other 2 guys?
edit: someone on chat mentioned Cohen is on Lantern.

Don't think so. Sam Black was X-3 after round 13, don't know if Cohen was indeed on Lantern or his standings.

None in top 8 But at least we got some more screen time and Zac got to do a Deck Tech Day 1 for Lantern and Hulk.
