Thalia's tax effect would have little bearing on Engineered Explosives, except for situations were you lack colorless mana and want to set Engineered to 0 but does affect Ratchet Bomb. You simply set X to one less than your "target" and spend the the same number of colored mana on the spell that you would if the taxer was not in play. Sunburst simply counts the number of colors used to cast the spell. Ratchet Bomb is fine if your not deep in a secondary color and want to make sure you clear two drops in a timely fashion and it clears tokens just as effectively. It is also significantly cheaper from a monetary standpoint. Overall Engineered Explosives feels stronger.
Birds of Paradise is fine as a substitute. There are a few benefits that Noble Hierarch possesses over BoP and one that BoP possesses over Noble.
Exalted provides the chance to attack for more damage under Ensnaring Bridge.
Slightly better topdeck on average due to Exalted. Slightly better offensive presence by itself.
Why Birds of Paradise is better:
Flying provides evasion and chump blocker against Affinity. Flying also pairs well with Gavony Township, equipment and buffs.
Birds is fine for the most part. You may one day wish to upgrade to Noble, especially if you run Smiters and Crusaders. If you use Birds I would recommend you include Gavony Township for sure. I would also never maindeck Crusaders in a deck with no Nobles.
Don't the blinks and vials make that more WG death and taxes though? Or are they lumped together on here?
Also, regarding that same deck, are the crusaders a meta call? I like Finks better in that spot considering the blink interactions (and life gain is kind of relevant right now with all the aggressive decks as well).

This is difficult to answer, mostly because if you ask ten people you may recieve ten completely different answers, but I will try to answer it as best I can.
Here is what can be considered the Hatebears core:
4 [Tempo One Drop]
4 Leonin Arbiter
3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Loxodon Smiter
4 Path to Exile
4 Ghost Quarter
Here is what could be considered W/g DnT core:
4 [Tempo One Drop]
4 Leonin Arbiter
3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Flickerwisp
4 Path to Exile
4 Ghost Quarter.
Now these are standard stock list and some versions run more Tempo One Drops or less Smiters (you never run less Wisp) but any deck in its respective archetype begins here. As you will notice there exist a large amount of similarities. In fact I labeled one slot Tempo One Drop for a good reason; DnT plays Vial, GWHB plays Nobles. They are different cards that serve similar roles with some caveats. Both exist to change the way you interact with your mana. Some GWHB list run Aether Vials. Some DnT run Nobles. But both start with the idea that we need to have a powerful turn one play that strengthens our gameplan. Both cards change what you cast and when.
Because DnT plays Vials it has a means to circumvent counterspells. This makes Smiter less useful overall, unless it's a very heavy discard meta. Conversely GWHB needs a powerful early game threat that gets around counterspells. This means it needs to make room for Smiters since they tend not to run Vials.
Because DnT plays Vials we get a new vector to attack from. We can now interact with our opponents on their turn with creature spells. Vial is not the only reason to run Flickerwisp, but it is a very large part of why it is a cornerstone of the deck.
As you can see the biggest difference between the two is what tempo one drop is played and what respective three drop works best with it. It is hard to run four Smiters and four Flickerwisp together. Both are fine cards, but eight slots is a lot to dedicate. These two cards alone result in vastly different games even though both decks seek to disrupt and beat.
So sometimes the line is blurred. A little crossover can be a good thing, but to try to fully cram both ideas into one deck dilutes the gameplan. From time to time someone will post a deck in one thread that is better served in another. But sometimes it can be hard to know exactly which is the best place to go for discussion. Though in this instance I would caution on the side of calling it DnT, over GWHB, but again it appears to attempts to be a hybrid variant.
As far as Crusaders go they can be good in B/G/x filled metas and can be very impressive when backed by a few Exalted triggers. I would have to expect a lot of Jund and Junk decks to maindeck them though. Finks is also good, but again it fits best in certain metas, namely those were you don't expect a lot of Paths or graveyard exile effects. Personally I like Voice of Resurgence a little better. Blade Splicer is another valid choice at 3 and Aven Mindcensor can provide you with a lot of great gotcha moments in a deck that can power it out turn 2.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Will study this deck more before investing.
Hey there, the deck is mine. I'm mostly active in the DnT forum, but occasionally look here for ideas and opinions on new cards. I consider this deck as DnT, however, it comes closer to Hatebears than most versions. The main difference between DnT and Hatebears most of you should know. It's not only the core, but also the play style. DnT is going heavily for disruption and manadenial. Flickering for value (Finks/Splicer) doesn't happen as often as some people think. I mostly use Wisp to remove attackers/blockers, cut them off a land for one turn, removing cranial plating.
I will answer some of your questions.
Ratchet Bomb: I wanted to play Explosives, but don't own any. The friend I wanted to borrow them from last minute included them himself into his deck. It made no difference in this case, I popped a Bomb only once that day against Affinity. Rancy has covered the difference between Explosives and Bomb pretty much.
Hierarch vs Birds: I would never ever play Birds. They are just so bad. It only allows you to get better T2 plays, but you could also use simian spirit guide for that Even 3 Birds with a Gavony are not really a thing. The reason I play Hierarchs is to increase the chance of T1 plays and T2 Arbiter+GQ. He also makes flyers a much faster clock and lets Smiter attack into Goyf, Rhino, Gourgler and Tasigur.
If I had no Hierarchs I'd only play Vial. The other one drops don't cut it.
Loxodon Smiter was a meta call. I was expecting a lot of Twin (which was right, about 25% of the field was playing Twin versions). Smiter helps getting through counter spells if I have no vial and survives Bolts. Also I knew there were some Lilis running around.
Mirran Crusader is nuts with exalted. It's not always a MD choice, but I play Spellskite MD, so he's a solid beater to count on and is protected from path and bolt. Also, Restoration Angel makes him resilient. His damage was between 6-10 all tournament long. This deck is very soft to elves and CoCo Combo, that's why I want MD Crusaders. He won me both games against a Rock deck.
Congratulations on your win! Thanks for your insight on the deck, will definitely keep this in mind if ever I push thru to build your deck list (hope you don't mind. :D)
I usually play Skite as a wall against burn more than as a damage damper (if you happen to hit Noble then you atleast have some blue mana to not take 2). I like Skite vs heavy removal.
In the year that's I've played HB, I've found a 4th CoCo is kind of clunky. I get why you want to do I in theory, but in practice I personally didn't like it and have had some people share the same opinion with me.
It sounds like you just had some bad games though, not that anything is particularly bad. I've been playing TasiTwin recently bc most decks are prepared for an aggressive meta and HB was acting soft on me
horizon canopy because if u draw them late game...u can discord it and draw another card....but if u need it early game its a great green or white source...
Decided to come back to Hatebears after messing around with other decks and getting my ass handed to me repeatedly at FNM. This is the list I'm thinking of trying this Friday, anyone got any ideas of how to make it better? I only have the 2 copies of Noble Hierarch or I'd run more of them.
I like your list but I feel you could use a land or two and cut a colorless source for another thicket. Maybe, try elspeth knight errant instead of sigarda. The old elspeth + mirran crusader synergy seems good right now
I could cut a Gavony for a 4th Razorverge. As for Sigarda I've been trying to figure out what the best card for her spot is. List of cards to test so far is Elspeth, 3rd Liege, Hero of Bladehold, and Master of the Wild Hunt. Problem with Master is he dies to Bolt.

Collecting Timbermare, hit me up if you have any for trade
I went with 4x Collected Company because I feel like it is often just the best card in the deck. Because of this, I didn't want to run any creatures with a CMC >3. Some of you dislike the 4th copy because it feels clunky, which is why I cut down Scavenging Ooze and Qasali Pridemage to 1 copy each in the MB. I'm also only running 1x Gavony Township because of this. I think the 24th land also helps with casting CoCo. I don't know how many of you have tried Eternal Witness in Hatebears, but it has been amazing for me. It has obvious synergy with Collected Company, but getting back a Path to Exile or Ghost Quarter has also been great.
My Sideboard could really use some work as I kind of just went with cards I owned. Eternal Witness is for grindy matchups, Dauntless Escort is for decks with wrath effects (big at my lgs), and Phyrexian Revoker is Pithing Needle on a stick. If I'm missing any Sideboard staples, please fill me in
So I've changed my SB after losing to Infect and Merfolk last night. I lost 1-2 in both these matchups, but they still felt pretty bad. Here is my new SB -
I ended up dropping Aven Mindcensor from the board. It feels more like a MB or nothing card, though I could be wrong. I'm considering dropping Phyrexian Revoker despite it being pretty good for me last night. I'm just not sure how impactful it is.
What do you guys think about Masako the Humorless? I'm thinking she'd be pretty good against the aggressive decks like Merfolk (lol Tidebinder) and Elves. She hits off of CoCo, and she has flash, making for a nice combat trick. She might be too cute, but I think I'll give her a shot.
Masako the Humorless - while having an awesome name - won't help much against Merfolk, I think. One spreading seas basically makes all of their creatures unblockable to begin with.
Tried out Master of the Wild Hunt at FNM tonight, he was about as useful as a wet paper bag. There was only one time he was useful and was when my opponent had Worship and a 2/2 on the field. So the Master is going to be replaced by an Aven Mindcensor.

Eternal witness is a great card, but I think you're over doing it a bit. 2 in the 75, 1main/1side is more than enough. Hitting her off CoCo is nuts, but the card is pretty vanilla on the board (I rather be stopping searches and swinging in the air with Aven Mindcensor). Also, Flickerwisp isn't bad, but it's not at its best in this shell. Without vial, Resto Angel is better than Flicker, but it would conflict with the 4 CoCos.
On another note, to the person who was exploring 4drops.. Elspeth, Liege and Archangel of Tithes or Resto Angel are probably good choices (I don't think Bladehold is where you want to be). Elspeth gives you reach and resilience, the Liege gives a strong pump, and Tithes has a big butt in case you see a lot of Tas/Goyf, has evasion, and is annoying for decks pinging damage and making drops (most people devalue her for not stopping twin, but it's a good value card, especially if you can drop her on t3).
For the infect/merfolk, having a Skite main board helps improve a lot of matchups. However, sometimes you have to be cool with the fact that certain matchups just blow lol. I actually moved into a Hatebearish type of Bant Knightfall shell recently to keep up with all the aggro. There's too many fast decks so I was really feeling favored against only all the Tron decks in the area. Hate Bears was at its best for me against jund/junk/grix/tron filled metas.
I think you might be referring to me as the guy exploring 4 drops unless someone else recently went on a thing about 4 drops. I had been running 3 Lieges but thought lowering to 2 and exploring a 3rd singleton might make the deck better and wanted to see how viable alternatives to Liege are. This is what I've found after playtesting during and after FNM.
Master of the Wild Hunt: Didn't have a lot of faith but thought I'd try him out anyway on the off chance he did better than expected. He didn't. The issues are that his toughness is only 3 so he's a magnet for Lightning Bolt/Helix, he either attacks or uses his ability in a turn, and he isn't an immediate threat when he lands. The fact you have to wait a turn to get the 2/2 wolf token and then decide whether to snipe out a creature or attack for the 5 damage they combined have is not something I want to have again in Hatebears.
Restoration Angel: This is actually the card I was running before Collected Company was released. I always felt that G was easier to make in the deck and weighed if I wanted Restoration as a single creature save or if I wanted Company as a swarm card. I haven't tried both in a deck but when Company replaced Restoration I never looked back. Restoration was good but I think its better in a Death and Taxes build instead of Hatebears.
Thrun, the Last Troll: It seems like this guy is always the bridesmaid never the bride when it came down to main deck choices. In a Blue heavy meta he's good but in my local meta he's never been good enough to make the 60. He's always the first card I bring in when I run into those Blue heavy decks though and unless my meta shifts to primarily Blue he's going to sit in the side deck as one of the cards that rotates in and out depending on what the deck of the week is.
Archangel of Tithes: I wanted this card to work so much but it has a few things holding it back. The biggest issue is the mana cost. When 3 of the required 4 mana is WWW that can be difficult to get with all the colourless and mono green sources we run in general. If we look at the non-white producing lands I used (4 Ghost Quarter, 1 Tectonic Edge, 1 Gavony Township, 2 Forest), we see that 8 of the 22 lands I run do not produce White mana, 36%. That greatly reduces the likelihood of being able to play her on turn 3, 4, or even 5. The effect while cool didn't feel like anything other than a "win more" effect. Being a 3/5 means she also isn't going to be going head to head with the beefy creatures that something like Smiter or Finks or Crusader or Baneslayer/Sigarda and even hope to come out ahead.
Sigarda, Host of Herons: Yes this is a 5 drop instead of a 4, but I had one in the side and figured it'd be worth trying her out in place of Master. If you can get her onto the field, she will end the game very quickly if you have any semblance of board control. Especially if you have Exalt triggers, or a Liege, or a Township on the field the clock becomes as fast as 3 turns solely from Sigarda damage. Her abilities making an enemy Liliana of the Veil more of a liability to your opponent instead of a help is huge on top of her having hexproof. Her mana cost can be a little difficult to reach and she isn't a Company target but I feel she's earned her place for consideration in the main deck.
Baneslayer Angel: Similar to Sigarda, Baneslayer will end the game very quickly if your opponent doesn't deal with her fast. Not many creatures can go toe to toe and survive against Baneslayer. The issue with Baneslayer comes down to not having built in protection via hexproof or colour protection. Can be used as an alternative to Sigarda, also main deck worthy.
I see, but i'm guessing maybe it due's to the tax effect that's why he played Ratchet bomb, maybe. How about, Bird of Paradise over Noble Hierarch, any thoughts about it?

Thats all the cards I got to test, I plan to test out Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Ajani Goldmane, and Hero of Bladehold next time to see how they compare to the others.
