I run 3 Thalia and 3 CoCo (the 4th gets clunky to me). Can't think of a time where I had an issue with it. I keep the crusader as sb tech against BGx, but he's otherwise bad. I play horizon because the card draw helps sooo much in grindy games.
On bloodmoon, if the hand isn't strong with at least a basic, I usually mulligan for a hand with Thalia or Pridemage and try to stall them from tapping 3 (or 4) for it. Forgetenders and Skites also help me keep those decks a bit off balance to let me stabilize. GQing yourself for a basic works too.
Hi everyone! It's been a while now that I'm following the post and I finally wants to be a part of it. I play magic since the first Ravinca block, i stop for a while and came back at the Return of Ravinca. I always loved Selesnya guild, I was more a Standard player but I started to change my Selesnya Aggro into a Gw hatebear. I realize something in all the techdeck you guys posted, no one his playing [Vryn Wingmare].. Its a 2/1 flying with the same ability as Thalia. So why no one plays it? Thank you!
I've been running 3 Thalia 4 Wingmare for a while.
While Thalia tax on turn two is indeed great, its less good as time goes on and she's legendary. Wingmare(s) stacked on Thalia becomes oppressive and typically it is much easier to swing with fliers and connect than it is on the ground.
Depending on your meta, there's an argument to run both.
That's what i thought so too. A flying is always good even if the first strike is nice , the legendary could be an issue more the game goes. I'll post my deck list soon. My only problem atm is the cost of the lands .... Uhgg they are damn expensive !!
I ran a build with 4 of each Thorn of amethyst, Vryn wingmare and Thalia the Guardian of Thraben. It's pretty cool to watch your opponent fumble to remove them all especially if you play them in succession. Starting off with Thorn puts the hurting on their tempo as its harder to remove.
I put Judge's Familiar in recently and like it a lot. Curving Familiar -> Thalia -> Wingmare is nice against many decks. If nothing else, it can fly in for some damage; I probably value flying more than most people, though.
I played 3/2 Thalia/Vryn in mono white D&T and I really liked it. I often stacked them, or I could run arbiter on turn 2 followed by Vryn turn 3 to curve into the soft lock using Vryn as non legendary Thalia number 4 and 5. I think anything more than 2 gets unnecessary though.
But I agree with the others saying you really want some board presence with Smiter. Plus Thalia into a turn 3 Voice of Resurgence is a strong similar play. They lost tempo since they have to wait to remove on their turn for 1 more mana, or you Gen a token.
I want to try out Canopy Vista as a replacement for Temple Garden and possible Razorverge Thicket. Wanderer does look cool but I'd want to try and add a blue mana from Birds of Paradise or Noble Hierarch so he hits as a 5/5 for 4 mana. If I were to add blue to the deck and go Bant, I'd add Lumbering Falls in a heartbeat. 3/3 Hexproof that becomes even bigger when we have exalt triggers and/or a Liege on the field? Yes please.

Collecting Timbermare, hit me up if you have any for trade
To be honest I can't see Canopy Vista or any of the other "tango" lands being much good outside of using fetchlands and aggressively getting basics. The odds of having two of them out in an average hatebears build is just so small that it will just always end up coming into play tapped.
Going bant I could see wanderer beign fun but at that point you have Collected Company packages to consider and it starts to look less attractive. The bar for four drops is quite high and i'm not sure that he has what it takes to make it.
Stasis snare seems interesting in the fact that it has flash but its a large downside that at three mana it only deals with creatures and is worse than path here since there are many other permanents that I would like to get rid of as well for that cost such as Liliana, new Jace, ensnaring bridge, ect... And of course there is always the danger they just blow it up and get their creature back.

Finally had a nice run with my Hatebears deck. A bit of me getting used to the Modern scene and how to properly pilot my deck. I think I still keep bad hands, though.
Burn-to-the-Face: 2-0
G1: He'd sling bolts and lightning strikes at me, get me to 6 (I had Thalia, tax was good), then I overwhelmed with creatures.
G2: Sided in Burrenton Forge-Tender and Kor Firewalker. Drew neither, but managed to live through 2 life to overwhelm him again with creatures.
Felt kinda bad for the guy, his game plan was to just sling burn spells at my face without the typical burn background spells.
Jund: 2-1
G1: T1 Inquisition of Kozelik and took my Voice. He saw my Loxodon and Wilt-Leaf. Everything else was lands. I probably should have pitched this hand. Got the Loxodon down on T3, but he was well on his way to Liliana and Chandra and I stupidly slam down my Wilt-Leaf when he -2'd his Lili. Again, new to the format. I eventually bled out to Tasigur and a Goyf.
G2: Side in: both Mirran Crusaders and Rest In Peace. Out: Thrun, both Scoozes. Landed a T2 Arbiter with his fetch sitting in play. T3 Comes Thalia, follwed by Rest In Peace. My board grows and he can't stabilize.
G3: I get a Voice token out from a dead Voice and proceed to smash with a smiter and the Voice token with an Arbiter and Heirarch sitting back to watch.
Elves: 0-2
G1: Magic tap-untap-convoke BS. He has a solid board by T3 and I stupidly block an early attack with an Arbiter, which enables his library-digging even more. He gets two Shaman of the Pack, which really hurt and kills me out right T5.
G2: I pull the Voices and Scoozes for Mirran Crusaders and Engineered Explosives. I don't see any of them. I pretty sure the kid didn't pay the Arbiter tax this game, but it didn't matter as his elves had Forest Walk.
Abzan: 2-0
G1: Pretty back-and-forth for this game, me swinging with an exalted Thalia. I develop a pretty nice board but then his Dark Confidant shows a Damnation. Next turn he boardwipes and I topdeck Baneslayer. Next turn I pull a Noble Heirarch, sac a Horizon Canopy and draw into Qasali Pridemage. I keep fearing a Path, but it never comes and the game ends shortly after.
G2: My board state develops real quick (but nothing threatening yet). He gets mana screwed and scoops, telling me he had the combo pieces but not the mana for it to go off. I asked him what the combo was, and he told me it was infinite life with finks/sac outlet/+1 counters. After thinking about it, I probably would have made him kill me. Does that make me a dick?
As much as I hate playing against twin/tron/affinity, I know those days are coming, but these wins have definitely boosted my confidence.

Glad to hear you did well! I have found that a huge part of being successful with this deck is knowing your opponents decks inside and out and tailoring your plays accordingly. The more experience the better =)

Couldn't agree more. Hatebears, while it does somewhat have a "plan" of its own, does revolve a lot on knowing how best to interfere with the other side's plan and making the right choices as you go through each turn.
Going to be running this list at FNM tomorrow if it fires off. I want to try out Canopy Vista as a replacement for Temple Garden to see how it performs.
Why Canopy Vista over Sunpetal Grove? You're not fetching, so you don't need the Forest/Plains land type. Also, it's easier to meet Sunpetal Grove's condition so that it comes into play untapped (you only need one basic land vs two basic lands).

Playing with proxied cards at sanctioned events is good, actually.
Hi guys, i'm planning to build G/W Hatebears since I have most of the lands and was thinking about playing this deck I found played by Mr.Benjamin Häußler at the Pforzheim goes Modern! Vol. 3 last weekend. My only budget concern is the Noble Hierarch, will the deck be that sub-optimal if I play Bird of Paradise until I save up enough money?
On bloodmoon, if the hand isn't strong with at least a basic, I usually mulligan for a hand with Thalia or Pridemage and try to stall them from tapping 3 (or 4) for it. Forgetenders and Skites also help me keep those decks a bit off balance to let me stabilize. GQing yourself for a basic works too.
(also, first strike is more relevant than people think)
And a question:
Anyone considering trying a GWu Hatebears version with the Reliquary/Coralhelm combo in it?
UW Ephara Hatebears [Primer], GB Gitrog Lands, BRU Inalla Combo-Control, URG Maelstrom Wanderer Landfall

Additionally, Temporal Isolation achieves most of the same effect as Stasis Snare for less investment and if destroyed wouldn't re-trigger any etb abilities on the creature in question. Valorous Stance or Dromoka's Command are probably still better Path to Exile #5-#X.

You pretty much hit it on the head there. Also bant usually ends up dropping most of the arbiter plan since fetches are what makes the landbase work and without arbiters you end up with Knight of the reliquary, Geist of saint traft, Meddling mage (Sideboard most likely), Judge's Familiar (Sometimes), and Stubborn Denial.
Glad to hear you did well! I have found that a huge part of being successful with this deck is knowing your opponents decks inside and out and tailoring your plays accordingly. The more experience the better =)
