What permanents did you have in mind? Outside of planeswalkers, I cant think of anything off hand were not already very well equipped to deal with. And if you are losing significantly to planeswalkers likely beast within will be too little to late imo.
Anyone consider beast within as a catch all answer to pesky permanents? We should have no problem dealing with a 3/3 token.
I've considered it but I haven't gotten a chance to test it yet. I'd remove my single Avacyn's Pilgrim for Beast Within and see how it performs. The draw I have towards Beast Within is that it can hit lands as well, and I love me some land destruction.

Collecting Timbermare, hit me up if you have any for trade
I was thinking of hitting ugin and karn. It can also serve as additional land hate. It also gives the deck another turn 2 destroy opponents land play setting them back to turn 0. Thaila can be a problem with it but I've moved my copies of her to the side.
I never even thought of the turn 2 kill their only land potential. I must test this card immediately.
Killing a t3 Karn or Lili is one thing and Planeswalker is the only reason I'd consider using Beast Within. We have main deck removal for every other permanent in the game.
Blowing up their land drop on t2 seems like a really poor tradeoff. If you want to add some more versatile land death to the deck, I'd look to things like Creeping Mold.
I think it's worth playing around with. It's instant speed vindicate but mono 2g. If some decks are willing to have swan song in their 75 we should take it into some consideration.
Thought I would share my list from The SCG Columbus Invitational. I ended up going 9-7 due to lack of experience in Standard (and playing 4 pros in Standard), but I went a respectable 6-2 in Modern with the following list:
Card Choices:
Aven Mindcensor has been lackluster, but I'm still having a hard time cutting it. At higher level events, nobody walks into the Aven Mindcensor Fetch trap. Even with the prevalence of Tron & Bloom, I'm not sure if this card is worth running unless you are running a flash package to diguise your plays like what dcovino is doing.
I don't think going down to 4 dorks is correct. My games are light-years better when I can play a Smiter/Brimaz on Turn 2, and then begin hating out my opponent. Speaking of which, I really missed playing my 2nd Brimaz this weekend, I am going back to 2. Having an early three drop threat on the board is awesome, especially when he can attack into Tasigur with an Exalted trigger.
I don't think Finks is worth more than one slot, if any. I feel confident in beating Burn as long as I play tight, and the addition of Dromoka's command makes this a little easier. I really wanted to run Rest In Peace to combat Delve/Snapcaster and random graveyard shenanigans, which gave me extra incentive to cut down on Finks.
The maindeck Teeg was a mistake. I expected to face a lot of Collected Company decks, but most of the time Teeg was just a Bear.
Other than that I'm pretty happy with my maindeck. Possible things I would consider in the future are adding a second Dromoka's Command,or adding a Gavony Township.
In the Sideboard a few notes:
Engineered Explosives is still excellent, it helps us in our toughest matchups (Infect, Elves, Merfolk, Boggles). I'm considering a third. Burrenton Forge Tendor is still doing a Spellskite impression for me, Skite might be better, but I don't like the tempo loss. Sunlance and Dismember are still great. It's possible that the Dismember should be Dromoka's command and I would most likely cut it if I put another Command main. I never sided in Linvala, but I'll probably keep her in the board for fear of Elves/Twin/Living End. I'm not sure if I like Mirran Crusader anymore. He seems like a crutch in matches that we should be winning anyways (Jund, Junk, Bloom).
I'll give a quick rundown of my matches.
Round 1 - Steve Mann - Abzan - 2-0
Both games my opponent drew a limited amount of removal, and Thalia slowed down his Lingering Souls Substantially. Engineered Explosives won me G2.
Round 2 - Ben Weinberg - Abzan - 2-0
G1 my opponent got greedy and Inquistioned me when I only had 2 in hand. Smiter proceeded to win. G2 I had a T2 Strip Mine and was able to out tempo my opponent thanks to Dromoka's Command and Wilt Lief Liege.
Round 3 - Merfolk - 1-2
G1 my opponent Floods the board quickly and overwhelms me with Master of Waves. G2, I have a turn 2 choke, turn 3 Brimaz, and clear the way with an explosive to win. G3 I answer his Master of Waves, but Island Walk allows my opponent to win in what otherwise was an even game. I think this matchup is very hard and its possible I should have held Ghost Quarter in my hand until my opponent casts a spreading seas.
Round 4 - Robert Vaughn - G/R Tron - 2-0
This match always feels like a joke unless they have a natural Tron. Search hate was excellent, and stony silences in the board are brutal.
Round 5 - Matt Costa - Grixis Moon - 1-2
G1 my opponent draws poorly and I run him over. Game 2 is strange. My opponent Spell Snares my T2 and T3 plays. I never draw a 4th land this game, and am subsequently ravaged by Vedalken Shackles. I don't have any experience fighting Vedalken Shackles but the card just felt unbeatable in games 2 & 3, especially when its being controlled by an expert pilot. I guess this is why Matt was able to go 7-1 with his list. To be fair, I made quite a few loose plays this match which may or may not have cost me the win. For instance, I swung in with a Stirring Wildwoods one turn when I knew he would take control of it with Shackles. The next turn I topdeck a Thrun, and am so relieved, that I instantly slam it even though I only have 5 mana. Matt then proceeds to cast Engineered Explosives for 4 off of my Wildwood to kill Thrun!!! Do you guys have an advice on how to beat shackles besides using Qasali wisely?
Round 6 - Kurtis Frather - The Rack - 2-0
Hey the Rack! Free Win!
Round 7 - Chas Tanner - R/W Burn - 2-1
Chas runs me over game 1. G2, I race him with a Brimaz and a Smiter. Brimaz tokens blocking on the back-end allow me to win. G3 turns into a grind, where Goblin Guide draws me 3 cards, and I am able to swing with a Voice token every turn while, I hold up BFT and a Command.
Round 8 - Elliott Mork - Jeskai Flash 2-1
This was the most enjoyable match of magic I have had in a long time. My oppnent was running the Blade Splicer version of the deck which made a it a fun guessing game of whether or not I would block his 3/3 first strike Golems with Smiters. I beat him G1 with Baneslayer (she was most excellent). He burns me out G2. G3 is very back and forth. I read his Resto plays a few times and way able to hold up removal for his flicker target. Dromoka's command ends up being the MVP here.
I'm pretty happy with the list, and will only make slight changes before the next event. When I have some free time to test, I would love to try dcovino's version of the deck that is heavy on the flash/instant speed package with the sacrifice of Thalia s. It looks like it can be really good, but it has a much different style of play.
Regarding Linvala, it does nothing against Living End unless you are trying to stop Fulminator Mage. The cards in their hand are creature cards, not creatures they control. Suppression Field does some work vs Living End, Twin and Company but sadly is too symmetrical.
Against Shackles, your counter is naturally Choke as you may know. Against Blue Moon or similar things, I usually board some Affinity hate like Stony Silence, Nature's Claim (I was running Krosan Grip/Seal of Primordium back then), and the sweepers. If their deck is mostly U based, they have a harder time dealing with things (less removal, and less options) but a lot of Islands. If they run more colors, they manabase is weaker so I would attack it aggressively. Keep in mind that a resolved Choke is game, while you can fight through a Vedalken Shackles with removal or big creatures. Explosives at 3 deals with Moon and Shackles, and Thrun is obviously a house if they don't have a Stirring Wildwoods
About your SB, why Rest in Peace over Grafdigger's Cage? Living End?
Edit: after looking at Costa's list, I would also bring the Celestial Purge (in my list, obv )
I believe WoTC's new policy is to make sure that every color can enjoy the exciting gameplay mechanic of making undercosted dudes and then turning them sideways. Clearly the future of magic.

Thanks for the advice on Linvala, I've never actually dealt with that interaction. Regarding RIP, it was mainly for all the synergistic graveyard decks floating about, especially ones with Snapcaster. I think its a decent one-of to side in against Grixis Delver, Temur Delver, Grixis Control, Abzan, Goryos, Collected Combo, or any rogue graveyard deck. None of those match-ups are terrible without RIP, but it often is a huge advantage.
For the Grixis Moon deck, I did bring in the Chokes, and one Stony Silence. Unfortunately I never saw any of them. Maybe the match-up is not as bad as it seemed and I only drew poorly?

Good report. I would totally fail at playing Standard as well, so I wouldn't sweat that too much.
So ended up going 2-2 again, should of been a 3-1 but the twin player got lucky and visions'ed into a another visions into a twin for the win. Then had bad luck against infect round 4.
Sideboard:
2 Kor Firewalker
3 Stony Silence
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
1 Batterskull
1 Rest In Peace
2 Choke
1 Dismember
2 Spellskite
2 Engineered Explosives
Round 1: Budget Slivers
G1: He was stuck on single mountain and played the first strike sliver and that was it.
Side in: 2 Dismembers
Side out: 2 Thalia
G2: He had a fast start and my tempo was thrown off by the "you must pay 2 more mana to target slivers with spells" sliver. It got to the point where I had a board state and he had a board state but I was forced into swinging the board when I saw the poisonous 1 sliver. I scare myself for when I mistakenly thought that poisonous 1 was infect which it is not. He could not swing for lethal for I had lethal next turn.
Round 2: My friend piloting his version of my U tron.
G1: He keeps a VERY risky 6 of tech edge and map. I punish his keep by a T2 arbiter and it was GG from there.
Side in: 3 Stony Silence, 2 Choke, 1 Rest in Peace, 1 Thrun
Side out: 2 Dromoka's Command, 1 Baneslayer Angel, 2 Mirran Crusader, 2 Kitchen Finks
G2: I keep a very aggressive hand with a stony silence. Thankfully no map T1 and he played one T2 instead and I resp with my T2 silence. He ends up getting thrown off tempo by repealing it. I respond with a smiter and a hero of bladehold and those stick and it goes down hill from there.
Round 3: Grixis Twin
G1: He goes off T6 while I find no answers to twin.
Side in: 1 Dismember, 2 Choke, 2 Spellskite, 1 Thrun
Side out: 1 Baneslayer, 2 Mirran Crusader, 3 Leonin Arbiter
G2: Very grindy, but eventually got there and manage to answer every twin attempt while stilling beating in.
G3: The grindiest, it came down to a point where I had 2 smiters on board and he cryptic'ed my team twice, followed by a snap into cryptic and exarch'ed one of them twice and all while hellbent and he just happened to serum into a serum into a twin for the luckiest of wins. I also didn't see much of my sideboard either.
Round 4: Infect
G1: Mull to 5, GG for me as I died on T5. Did put up a fight with my 2 paths and blockers.
Side in: 2 Explosives, 1 Dismember, 2 Skites
Side out: 1 Arbiter, 1 Baneslayer angel, 3 Kitchen Finks
G2: My T2 skite got answered with one of his own and his was simply better as he slowly managed to build a team and kill me again.

I've considered it but I haven't gotten a chance to test it yet. I'd remove my single Avacyn's Pilgrim for Beast Within and see how it performs. The draw I have towards Beast Within is that it can hit lands as well, and I love me some land destruction.

I'd be removing some combination of Linvala, Keeper of Silence, Mirran Crusader, Rancor, Aven Mindcensor from the main to make room. Keys to the match would be cards like Hushwing Gryff as it relies heavily on Snapcaster Mage, Qasali Pridemage since they can come down before Vedalken Shackles or Blood Moon, and Restoration Angel as that deck is somewhat weak to fliers and relies on removing more than countering.

Yeah not the greatest of nights but oh well.
