Epiphany is good and I am running it. On cmc 3 it's basically on the same power level as Anticipate. On cmc 4 it's on the same power level as Thirst. Cmc 5+ it's starting to get ridiculous.
1. You have a great sideboard for burn. that game 1 and 2 turn around is great. And considering how often you run into it that is to be expected.
2. That jund match up is a lot closer than i'd like. Jund is 50-50 against everything... except tron... but not this tron? Abazan match up is great though especially after board that is kind of odd. Is there something fundementally different with how you board?
3. Is the Tron so bad we give up trying to fight it?
4. Improvement after side against infect is good but still doesn't get it to 50-50. Perhaps there is some config changes.. but 50-50 seems the best to hope for.
5. merfolk unwinnable got it.
6. Not getting to 50% post board against dredge :/, does this data include preban dredge?, need to step up the hate?
7. That affinty win percent is bad news. More hate required?
8. oooph bant eldrazi is rough. The play draw is a big deal for that match up. Need to bolt birds?
9. The data below 20 matches is a bit meh... I mean 20 matches is meh as well but this will do.
10. Scapeshift has a big turn around post board. But I didn't release that match up was so tough.
Conclusion we need 20 sideboard slots :P. See if we can find cards that overlap with some of the decks we struggle with.
ghost quarter and other land destruction is my first thought.
1 round 1 was elves. went 2-0, I pyroclasm the heck out of this guy both games.
2 round 2 was merfolk, went 2-0. I pyroclasmed this guy to death as well. both games after I pyroclasm'd his initial start, I landed karn liberated and began eating his board to finish the game. he had nothing to interact with karn either game.
3 round 3 was a strange red white dragons. went 1-2. game 1 I pulled enough counter spells to counter his stuff and pulled 1 karn which dominated the game and won me the game. game 2, I sideded in 2 jester's cap and cyclonic rift I was expecting blood moon. I didn't see any blood moon, but after countering several creatures 3cc minotaur (deals damge to those who attack it) and 4cc dragons, I didn't replenish counter spells or get a solid threat against my opponent. he lands a dragon that draws him additional cards per turn and kills me as I draw nothing that can answer it. game 3, I mull to 5, and he eeks out a dragon puts the pressure on me. I can't draw and answer to his dragon and die 3 turn later.
4 round 4 another merfolk. 0-2. this guy gets everything on me perfectly. he pulls turn 1 vial and lets it do the work. I struggle to find my tron. he gets off multiple lords and over runs me. game 2 is worse. I get my proclasm off, but he land flood and gets 2 mutavault online, he goes all in and hits me 3 times, I can't kill man lands he wins....
5 round 5, 0-1. against esper control. we grinded out all of my threats. I even mind slaved via emrakul, the promised end twice and he had sorcery answers for them. I killed 3 of his 4 celestial colonade with ghost quarter and a short lived karn liberated. I run out of threats and we go into a draw go situation for several turns, he gets his 4th colonade, I can't draw an answer for it as we go to time. turn 2 as we ran out of time, he top decks a white sun's zenith! that plush his colonade seal my fate. m deck had nothing left at that point.
Hi everyone, just recently got back into 4 cards formats, returned to the game to play EDH but it wouldn't slake my thirst for playing decks tuned to kill against the same. So a mate pushed me into modern. We settled on Utron to stop me saying sorry those aren't for trade when people pointed to the tron in my binder. So a week into playing the deck it was time for my first tournament, a small 9 player affair at the LGS. Sadly I had to play with what was available, I wanted to run something as close to shoktroopa list as possible... But I'll have to show you 'Mid-range Utron' instead.
Okay, so by now you're either not reading or have a few questions.
Did I feel underprepared? Yes.
Do I have huge regrets about some of my card choices? Yes.
Have you considered playing Yi-Gi-Oh? No. Pokemons though...
The two out of place cards I'm fond of are Reality Smasher, which I don't think I've ever lost a game after casting and attacking. Then Walking Ballista, which is an amazing card and doesn't deserve to be compared to Hangarback, it's leagues apart
Now apologies for my poor match reporting, very out of practice. Apologies to anyone I played against if I miss report the game, please correct me!!!
Match 1 - Zoo
Game 1
I played very poorly, and was crushed after using tec edge too aggressively.
Out - Maps, Kozliek and Remand Out, Talisman
In Droplet, Members, Trinket, Treasure, Ratchet
Game 2
Mulligan to 5
Ballista on 2, Draw into tron, Titan takes the game.
Out - Maps
In Droplet, Ratchet, 2 members out
Game 3
Walking Ballista+Batterskull+Trinket Mage too Much
1-0 (2-1)
I took the maps out on the play game 2 as I want to play onto the board early turns and not dig for tron.
Match 2 - Merfolk
Game 1
Reality Smasher is Huge clock.
Maps out
Game 2
Lost to the beats and not able to stick a sweeper in time
Game 3
Walking Ballista is a thing + Smashers again.
2-0 (4-2)
I played against merfolk a lot in the past week, match-up feels favourable when Walking ballista hit and when Smasher comes in time to race their clock if you've found some tempo.
Match 3 UW Control
Game 1
Slow game, eventually won on card quality and 13 mana
2 Maps out
Treasure and Trinket in
Game 2
Use tecedge too aggressively = don't be surprised when you draw into mana while being Beat to death by Geist of Saint Traft
Game 3
Coil gets Pathed, Trons Up, Titan get Pathed, No more options.
3-0 (6-3)
Match 4 - Brall Storm
Game One
He sticks an Electromance, I tec his 4th land, he storms out on 3 mana next turn.
Stones and Dust Out
Relic, Echoing Truth, and Mages In
Game Two
Make Mindslaver Mana, Crumble to Dust Steamvents and Beat face.
Game Three
Double Mindslaver with the second one flashing back past in flames leaving no resources.
Playing against storm is really, really scary.
4-0 (8-4)
So, lucky to not run into affinity or infect and need to learn to play with tecedge.
Platinum Angel is and Second Wurm are in the mail, now to find some chalices and Explosives!!
R4 L - Bant Eldrazi.
Horrendous matchup, I really wanted access to ceremonious rejections.
R5 W - RW Enchantments.
I have no clue what this was, he had Leyline of Sanctity, Greater Auramancy, Runed Halo, lots of wraths and Mycosynth Lattice
R6 W - Lantern Control.
Killed him with his own spellskite.
R7 W - Mono White Quest.
Chalice did serious work.
R8 W - Affinity.
Won game 3 on negative 20 something life and 13 poison.
R9 W - Eldrazi Tron.
Have no experience against it. Feels like a good matchup
Pretty diverse field. Hoping to dodge affinity and RG tron tomorrow.
Ended at 9-6
R10 L - Eldrazi Tron.
Got very unlucky, felt like a strong favourite.
R11 W - UWR Nahiri.
R12 W - Affinity.
Saw lots of my board. He incorrectly brought in blood moon against me as they usually do
R13 L - RG Tron.
Meh.
R14 L - Noble Abzan.
Mana screwed 2 of the 3 games.
R15 L - RG Tron.
Like come on.
Pretty disappointed losing to 2 good matchups and hitting our literal worst possible matchup twice (maybe merfolk is worse? either way I can't think of another deck across the table that I'd rather see less). I guess I beat affinity twice during the event so that somewhat makes up for it?
Unlucky with the RG tron match ups down the stretch.
9-6 seems to be where the deck is in modern atm better than average but not breaking through.
What were the worst cards in your sideboard?
To fit in something like ceremonious rejection in. I still run.. negate... I like them against tron and anything werid.
How was spreading seas? I assume it is for inkmoths or not stopping tron lands. Tron will bring in the Naturalize effects after board. (The one that give the opponent life forgot its name) I don't think you can keep them off tron with it.
I brought in EE and Warping Wail the least. Bant Eldrazi seems to be on the decline anyway, so Rejection may not be needed, but it's also extremely good against affinity.
Negate was cut from my board. I do like it as a catch all as well, but my board was tech'd for our bad matchups since I expected there to be a lot more affinity and burn than random stuff.
Seas was great. It's for any man land, not just inkmoth. Also hits cavern of souls and tron lands. My RG tron opponents didn't actually bring in claim vs me. Maybe they did after getting hit by it game 2, but they just rolled me too hard on the play to tell. It was definitely the reason why I was able to get post board games off them.
I misused it to lose vs jund where it would have saved me. I enchanted a blackleaf cliffs to keep him off BB because I was scared of Liliana, then I just lost to a Raging Ravine hitting me for 5 turns.
planar bridge feels more like the new eye of ugin only its not a land. the difference is it doesn't work well since they need to be cast for their triggers.
It is tricky, they are faster at getting and keeping tron, but counter thier first play and drop something dangerous of your own.. and you are in with a chance. I think the issue is that you are almost a tempo deck instead of control because they are the actual go bigger deck in the match up.
He considers EldraziTron and Noble Abzan a good matchup and Gx tron "our literal worst matchup".
Correct.
The only threatening plays from eldrazi tron are turn 2 thought knot, or turn 3 smasher through a cavern. Noble Abzan is way too fair of a deck and gives us way too much time to set up.
Gx tron or fish is our worst, I can't think of a deck that comes close to how bad those matchups are for us.
It is tricky, they are faster at getting and keeping tron, but counter thier first play and drop something dangerous of your own.. and you are in with a chance. I think the issue is that you are almost a tempo deck instead of control because they are the actual go bigger deck in the match up.
Even if we counter their first play, they will just keep playing big things, and the cast triggers from world breaker and ulamog are back breaking. We can't really just drop something dangerous of our own either, the only thing that really swings the game is an activated mindslaver.
I think I'd much rather sit across from merfolk than Gx tron (or maybe even bant eldrazi). Merfolk at least we can sometimes slow down with spatial contortion and whatnot until we hit ugin or oblivion stone. Like VirginityTheGathering said, cast triggers are just horrendous.
