Sundering can hit tango lands though, and fastlands have always been in the game. You don't need to armageddon them, against 3 colour decks you'll be getting 3 of their lands a huge amount of the time when it enters.
Sundering Titan used to be good 2 years ago. Nowadays mana bases look differently though. There are definitely more fastlands, painlands and manlands than before. Blooming Marsh, Shambling Vent and Spirebluff Canal are just some examples for "new" lands that make Sundering Titan worse.
Sundering Titan can still win games, and usually takes out 2 lands... but I cannot even think of a meta where I would want Sundering Titan over Ugin/Gearhulk/Engine.
Hey guys, long time uTron player and I'm trying to finalize a list for playing at GP Van this upcoming week and am wondering what you guys think of my current list. Oh, also, no Oboro, Palace in the Clouds because I'm running the 2x Sunken Ruins. I'm also wondering if I should be running Glen Elendra Archmage over the Summary Dismissal sideboard.
Hi everyone. I had a couple questions that I was hoping you guys could help me with. What matchups is Squelch good against? It seems like such a low impact card and I am just wondering what it is best against. Planeswalker decks? Or maybe just to try and snipe a fetch land? Also, how important is Hurkyl's Recall in the board? Affinity seems like a very bad matchup from my perspective and I was wondering if Hurkyl's even makes that match winnable anyway. It can buy us a turn in my experience but usually not much more. Finally, I was wondering what people think about Spell Snare vs. Spell Pierce vs. Dispel in the board. Which one do you guys prefer? Thanks for the help.
just finished a 10-man event, and had one of the most stressful matches, since i'm playing this deck.
finished the swiss 4-th place:
match 1: 0-2, friend playing Tamiyo-spirits-collected deck, game 1 had tron, no threats, game 2 he topdecked an avacyn
match 2: 2-0, esper control, auto-win, of course opponent: "you had good draws"
match 3: 1-1-1, abzan value, guy played super slow, had him in game 3, but ran out of time, but game 2 managed a spectacular Ugin after casting thirst-thirst-snap-thirst, again opponent: "you had good draws"...
match 4: 2-0, grixis delver, sort-of auto win, he never really stressed me
lost in the finals against mono-blue delver+thing.
in the semifinals played against a really well rounded jund deck, got all the stuff that's really needed for it to be competitive.
game 1: i open a Gemstone Caverns, exile a snapcaster and keep angel and titan in hand next to 2 other tron lands.
he plays some inquisition, bob, then i find the third tron piece and cast titan turn 4, killing 3 of his 4 lands
game 2: 1 have 2 tron pieces + map in hand, he fulminator mages one of my tron piece, few turns later i draw an Academy Ruins, but i'm forced to play a tron land, so i can Mindslaver him, he reveals basically nothing. on my turn i play simulacrum, he has goyf (5/6 or something) 1 huntmsater and 1 bob on board (huntmaster is flipped), i'm at 8, block the goyf, go down to 2, he inquisitions me and plays the second huntmaster and passes me the turn. on his end step i put slaver on top.
here the fun begins:
- he has 2 huntmaster (human form) on the board. on my turn i cast slaver, so it will not flip because of me not playing
- i'm at 2 life, so even a single flip could kill me
- because of that i just can't skip trough the hoops and call it a game
- i have to play at least a spell on his turn too
luckily for me he has a bob, so he starts revealing some spells each turn, so i can cast something on his turn, otherwise the huntmaster would flip.
here is what i had to do
- first i play a ravine, then fulminator mage it
- abrupt decay a wolf token
- kolaghan's command a huntmaster
- play second then third bob
at this point he just draws enough card, that i simply use the second command on huntmaster and as he goes down to 1 life, while having no more huntmaster on board, i say, this is over now, but i troughtseize him just for wrap things up.
got went 5-0. 3 of my match ups were weak to pyroclasm, tokens, elves, a chord style deck, all I had to do was mulligan into pyroclasm and I had the advantage every game.
2 other match ups were blue white control and jund. went 2-0 against the blue white control guy, not sure what happened to him but he just lost all advantage when i resolved karn, liberated, game 2 I ended it with emrakul, the promised end.
Jund player I eeked out tron and got emrakul, the promised end, with that on his enslaved turned I burned out his answers and he scooped. game 2 he had an annoying fulminator mage, I countered his tarmogoyf and scavenging ooze, keeping presure off me, eventually I hit 6 lands and brought down the wurmcoil engines x2 and that finally put the pressure on him and won me the game as he didn't top deck a means to get rid of the tokens.
once again I had a strong showing for pyroclasm splash, i'm certain I would have struggled with some of these match ups had i played mono-blue which doesn't have good turn 2/3 board sweep like pyroclasm.
Where do you draw the line between keeping condescend in hand just in case and casting it for X=0 to scry?
If you have 2U+2Different tron parts, would you cast thirst at EoT and cast condescend targetting it for X=0?
How badly damaged do you need to be to start casting condescend for X=0?
Finally, How much power would need a creature without threatening abilities to make you counter it to avoid the clock? 3? 4?
Thanks in advance
I condescend for the scry when I really need to find an answer and don't have the time, usually when I'm dead to whatever is already on the board. If I'm doing fine on boardstate, I never condescend for 0 to scry, its just wrong 99% of the time. For your example, I would only do it if condescend is dead in the matchup (eg against merfolk and they have caverns out and you dont care about the rest of their cards.)
As for creatures, I almost condescend anything if I can counter it. The scry is what makes the deck work, and everything in modern is so powerful that it's almost never a bad target. Usually the only time I don't condescend a threat is if my boardstate/removal (or life) can handle it, or if I need the counterspell to protect something crucial like a platty angel or wurmcoil from Path.
I'll be going to Grand Prix Brisbane next weekend and am close to settling on a list, this being the current iteration. The meta will be completely wide open, I have no idea what to expect, but hopefully lots of midrange and control. Being in Australia, a number of Japanese players are expected to be coming as well, if anyone has any knowledge of what the Japanese meta is currently like.
Things I'm currently not 100% on (apart from not just borrowing burn or affinity lol):
2 Treasure Mage. Not sure if I want the 2nd one. I usually play 1, but going into an unknown field, I think I want more ways to grab my finishers against specific matchups.
1 Gifts Ungiven. This currently occupies my flex slot. I was thinking a second Solemn instead, but following the logic of the 2nd treasure mage, I want more ways to find specific things.
The 2nd Solemn in the board. I really like it vs GBx, but I think I'm good enough against them postboard, and I'm a lot more scared of the fast matchups. Should probably just be an Engineered Explosives.
I've been on this deck for years now, I'm very comfortable with it, just wanted to hear some input and critiques, or at the very least questions about card choices so I can think about this list more. Just want to bounce it around before I settle.
No thought knot or spacial contortion?

Running solemn instead of thought-knot, i like it more. No contortion, no, if I was expecting nothing but affinity, infect and burn I'd have 2-3 main, but I'm expecting a bit of GBx and blue based control decks.
Seems bad in the majority of matchups... I played against bant eldrazi, affinity, rg tron, naya burn...boarded out each time.
Not even sure he should be in the board for the matchups where he is acceptable.
Has anyone tested the new Ulamog in his place? Or going back to Myr battlesphere?
Batterskull:
Unsure if he just wants to be a second wurmcoil, or a cyclonic rift which I dropped
In my meta I rarely sb out titan. With out a good threat coming in I hate losing a creature option. He never destroys less than 2 lands for me. And can grab 2 more usually if they remove him.
Batters kill was finally dropped from my list because rift was needed more in my meta. Extra bounce for sun and moon, nahiri control, lantern, cheerios, bogles. But again this is a meta decision. Bskull was doing a lot of work when. It was jund heavy and grixis control heavy but that has shifted. Even the eldrazi match ups rift is better to time warp with

YO, deck feels great in this meta.
chalice doesn't feel as relevant though... thinking of going down to two.

Titan is mostly for Esper, BGx and URx control type stuff, if your metagame is mostly linear derpy decks Titan is at best a 1 of in the board, agreed.
