Hello everyone here. I just started playing in modern. I have been playing human tribal deck in Standard but then I decided to change format.
I decided to make something familiar to me as for a beginner, so I have chosen another tribal. Basically I was choosing between Eldrazi, Humans, Elves, Zombies and Rats. Elves were an obvious choice but somehow I managed to choose Rats instead. After a few months and different combinations this deck was made. But to my mind it is far from perfect and I wouldn't dare to call it competitive.
So I would be glad to hear some advice and your thoughts on that and whether I should keep playing Rats or it would be easier to change to Elves.
If you want to be competitive, switch to elves. That deck can build into a very reasonable Modern deck. But you can always play anything you want. The problem with a deck like this is that it's just too slow. Coat of arms is sure neat, but Modern decks are going to be putting way too much pressure on you before the card can matter. Lots of decks have hate for artifacts too, either maindeck or sideboard, which makes it unreliable. And without these effects the rats do almost nothing.
Ogre Slumlord. For rats, this is all I can come up with. It should be handy with regenerate.
Playing an Elf deck would have more options, and it would be easier to win with it.
I would also try cheap removal, but your rats may do well enough without it. Consider Doom blade .
I think Rats are a fine tribe that can be made to be in the neighborhood of tier 3. Above are some links to other takes on Rat Tribal. The strength of Rats are discard and removal. My take below emphasizes both... It could use tuning. Pack Rats are important because they turn dead spells into inevitability. Rats are hard to remove without sweepers and Pack Rats get very large very quick, but they tend to be a late game play.
Typhoid Rats are an underrated rat. They are effectively unblockable so they enable ninjitsu and are cheap to recast. They block well to kill usually the opponents best creature.
