Well.....
Josu Vess is the biggest Lich
He's a big fat Lich
He's the biggest Lich in the whole wide world
He's a stupid Lich if there ever was a Lich
He's a Lich to all the boys and girls
On Monday he's a Lich
On Tuesday he's a Lich
On Wednsday through Saturday he's a Lich
Then on Sunday, just to be different,
He's a superkamayamayaliiiich
Have you ever met my friend Lillana's Bro?
He's the biggest Lich in the whole wide world
Now in all seriousness I was wondering if Josu cold be broken in modern and I came up with this. I think I have a decent base but comments are welcome. SB could probably use some work.
Eh but that combo seems slow, very very slow. That and there is nothing in the deck atm that allows me to force the combo when I want rather on my opponents terms for those cards. I will say that Cast down and Victim probably needs to have one or the other to the deck.
I also think (and this is my own perception) that the shade ability gets knocked on too much since most the bodies its attached to are usually so frail that removal when they are on the downside makes them extremely fragile. Whereas this shade actually only needs 1 mana open to pass the bolt test and in its unboosted form passes the 1st stage push test. But as I said that's a perception on my part.
The Relentless Dead "combo" is just a bonus. The biggest appeal for the card is a 2/2 menace that's extremely difficult to permanently remove, that also sometimes brings back a friend.
Red should be burn, Goblins, Dragons, draw/discard, and Standard-unplayable 5CMC cards with insane, lengthy effects that take 10 minutes to figure out what they do and another 20 to actually make their effects work on the field.
I wonder if I should drop Grey Merchant and try a different direction using some assortment of Torment of Hailfire, Solemn Simulacrum, Burnished Hart, Gauntlet of Power, Caged Sun and some of the above cards suggested. Don't get me wrong I love my Grey merchies but adding Crypt, or Korlash would make my 4cc spot kind of kludgy. Right now I'm leaning towards Hart and maybe korlash since both hit the field running a bit more overall..

Relentless Dead would be very good here and will lower the curve a bit, I'd play it over Vampire Nighthawk.
Geralf's Messenger is probably a better 3-drop than Dread Shade (which is just a slightly bigger Nantuko Shade for more mana which isn't great imho).
Having more zombies in the deck would go well with Relentless Dead's ability to reanimate.
For removal the new Cast Down looks good and Victim of Night is always a good option in Mono Black.
