I played with the upgraded wizard deck at a local modern tournament and ran two times into a Leyline of Sanctity on turn zero. Is there any good sideboard card for the wizard deck to destroy this enchantment?
I run a Stomping Grounds for 2x Destructive Revelry in the SB... but theres mono-red options too

Have a helicopter drop you off out front. Light your cigar with a small Indonesian boy holding a black lotus. Then bust out a craw wurm deck with no sleeves. Raw dog shuffle, loose terribly, flip the table, leave in a hovercraft.
There is no way to destroy enchantments with U/R decks... You can only bounce them. If you bounce a leyline on a non white based deck it's like or worse than destroying it.
I had the same problem yesterday when I tried this deck on mtgo. I encountered a smallpox/ the rack based deck and a green tron big mana deck.
Vs the smallpox I feel like there is no answer to Shrieking Affliction. I won only one match the rest of the matches I feel like my deck was underpowered or his deck very op.
Against the tron based deck I have not played blood moon in the sideboard and in all the games he had tron on turn 3, in turn 4-5 he casted Ugin and GG no way to win with that card in play.
On the other way I beat easily a burn deck wich instead I thought it was a difficult match.
So I feel this deck needs more bounce spell at least to have an immediate answer to planeswalkers or enchantments..
Zerve- I really like the idea of 2 spell pierce in your list. I play a very similar list and have been running two copies of Spell Pierce. They have been great. It's also an easy card to cut in super creature heavy matchups making room for sideboard cards. Sometimes it's hard to know what to cut because everything is so useful.
As for enchantments I play one copy of Echoing Truth in my mainboard for tokens and for problematic permanents like ensnaring bridge and worship in game one. I play jeskai so I have access to Wear // Tear in my board, but echoing truth is normally enough to get through the final damage needed.
Ross Merriam played Harlan Fierer's deck on StarCity today. Here is a link:
That list looks really great. A lot of different style decks and a ton of midrange/control. I really like were the modern format is right now. There are still a few cards on my possible ban (Simian Spirit Guide) and unban (Stoneforge Mystic) watch lists, but I wouldn't change a thing right now. The meta is very diverse and has a ton of fun decks to play against.
It looks like the wizard decks are starting to homogenize closer to the more aggressive prowess version. That is the version I originally thought would be best. My original list is close to these, but had Wizard's Retort and Adeliz, the Cinder Wind. I love seeing a UR prowess style deck doing well. These are my favorite style decks. I don't know if this deck will knock Jeskai Delver out as my #1 deck, but it's great to have another deck to play.
I’m treating this list like a burn deck with some extra steps. I wish to god there were another 1 mana prowess wizard, or really, anything better than ghitu lavarunner, but here we are.
I’m mostly worried about my sideboard. I’ve only played a handful of rounds at this shop, and so I’m not sure what’s prevalent. For what it’s worth, I saw GDS, Abzan, ur storm, affinity, and UW Control when I played six matches there about six months ago. Overall it’s a pretty spiky environment.
I do have Relic of Progenitus, if anyone’s curious, but I thought the tormod’s crypt would be superior because I do rely on my own graveyard somewhat (for ghitu lavarunner and snappy). Let me know if you disagree.
Left to my own devices I’d probably run something like
Unified Will and Wizard's Retort. Both represent 2 cmc counters (1U and UU) respectively, however Unified Will has a chance of being blown out on the stack if they remove your creature before it resolves, unlike Retort which does its thing once cast. I really like the idea of running more counters in the sideboard instead of main for two reasons: 1. helps us hedge against cavern of souls and ending up with dead counters in hand, and 2. allows us to transition into a tempo style of deck instead of straight aggro/burn, giving us a better chance against midrange. This is one of the main reasons as to why I prefer Ghitu Lavarunner over Monastery Swiftspear: Swiftspear often represents more damage and is generally a more powerful card, but in order to maximize her effectiveness, you usually need to tap out and send bolts to their face or burn cantrips on your turn. Lavarunner, on the other hand, represents a consistent 2 damage a turn. A bunch of my games have been played on 2 lands, holding up 1 cmc spells like DispelSpell Pierce, or Bolts. Lavarunner allows me to hold up both of my mana, bash for two, then decide on THEIR end step to bolt face, Opt, or even just hold up Negate while I clock them for 2+ every turn. Had it been a swiftspear, I would have been dealing half the damage per turn. Plus, a top-decked Lavarunner in a grindy late game is basically a Shock compared to swiftspear's 1.
Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon. Honestly I could see Magus a better choice vs tron. Moon isn't an instant-win card, since they will eventually just draw enough lands/artifacts to just hard cast Wurmcoil Engine and the like. I'm also not really a fan of Moon since it costs 3 in a deck running 16-19 lands. Moon is just disruption, Magus is disruption AND a clock. I don't have much experience playing with Moons though since I don't own them in paper, but am definitely interested in trying out Magus. Don't forget that he's a wizard.
Hi guys, I went undefeated at my last LGS midweek tournament with Jeskai Wizards // Jeskai Naban.
Let's just say Snapcaster, Naban and an Aether Vial lead to some bonkers plays. Vial+Adeliz+Burn produced some huge, satisfying swings too. Champion and Liutenant were consistently huge quickly thanks to all the double triggers.
Match-ups were G-Tron, GB-Tron, Grixis Death's Shadow and Grixis Delver.
I should also mention that Boros Charm was easily worth the main-deck slot. The blowouts were so huge. I gave my team and vial Indestructible in response to Oblivion Stone TWICE during the night, as well as hitting for an Alpha strike with Adeliz for exactly 17 damage (his exact life total), when any other burn spell would have meant I was swinging for only 15.

I think Boros Charm is super underrated right now and totally agree with you. The indestructible option is often over looked, but can cause the largest blowouts. I can't tell you how many games I have won with a Boros Charm for 4 damage when a bolt wouldn't have done. Very cool deck. I will definitely be trying something similar.

Thanks, mate! Let me know how your testing goes with anything similar. The cards I'm looking at most closely are;
A) Geist of Saint-Traft for the sideboard, for Jeskai/Mardu/GBx type match-ups. This would take the spot of Dire-Fleet Daredevil in the board.
B) Stormchaser Mage in the main. Space is very tight though since I'm running the full 4x Champion and 4x Liutenant package.
C) Monastery Swiftspear instead of Soul-Scar Mage. Not a fan of this idea since it turns off Wizards Lightning more, but haste is very good. I'm more likely to run Stormchaser.
D) Adding mor3 copies of Deputy of Acquittals to the main-deck. Deputy is my best card (bar a potential upgrade in the board to Geist) in removal-heavy match-ups since it allows me to save a creature from removal and fizzle it, trigger champion/Liutenant, and re-play the creature for more triggers.
E) Purphoros, God of the Forge. Again in the sideboard for Grindy match-ups. With Naban in play, each Wizard that ETB's triggers Purphoros twice, for 4 damage to the dome!
I love how many different styles of this deck can be built. It's really a deck that you can make your own. I prefer a bit more of an aggro-control style, but the naban style decks are also awesome.
OOSunYOO- I am currently playing jeskai delver. I would likely adjust the list slightly to be a wizards deck. I LOVE Geist of Saint traft and think he would be great for your sideboard. He is basically unbeatable against control decks. On the swiftspear vs. Soul-scar mage I think this deck would require soul scar mage. Although I think swiftspear is better for my personal play preference, soul-scar mage is a wizard and that is invaluable in this deck. Purphoros sounds like a great sideboard card. I don't have a lot of experience with the deck so I don't know if the grindy matchup needs anymore, but if it does purphoros seems legit.
Dennis- that deck is really cool. I wonder if any of the merfolk players have migrated to a merfolk wizard deck?
Both lists are amazing. Very fun deck to play. Thank you for sharing.
0oSunnYo0 list's is more aggro while Mtggoldfish one's is more control. I would like to see if we could mix the best cards of both decks and build an aggro-control list...
Compared to the "Goldfish" list I've made the following changes:
# Voidmage Prodigy over Path to Exile in the maindeck, the deck is already good against creatures (except fast swarms like Goblins or tokens) so improving the game against spells seems better and Voidmage is a powerhouse in this deck especially with Vial helping to keep up mana for his ability.
# Harbinger of the Tides over Merfolk Trickster, it is probably debatable but I just think that Harbinger is the better card as bouncing a creature (though conditionally) is better than tapping it down and with Aether Vial it has flash most of the time anyway.
# The 3rd Master of Waves over the 3rd Venser, being non-legendary and the primary finisher in the deck justifies more copies imho.
# Vendilion Clique should be in the deck but I don't have them so I decided to try out 2x Eerie Interlude which has an insane ceiling in this deck with all the EtB abilities it can retrigger and it also offers wrath protection.
#In the SB I moved 3x PtE there by taking out the Settles and Condemn and also replaced Negate with Wizard's Retort.
I added Meddling Mage as well to help with combo decks by trimming down on GY-hate (-1x RiP, -1x Surgical) and replaced Disenchant with Detention Sphere.
The SB lacks sweepers and Stony Silence (because of Vial) so those might be better in the Mage (or Champion/Alliance) slots.
I love the Naban deck in Standard, and when rotation happens I'm guessing the cards are going to be played here. I just have to ask why not Champion of Wits? If Naban is out, it can Faithless Looting twice. Which helps get rid of extra Vials and Nabans when drawn as well as provide some Snapcaster fuel if needed
I'll be lurking in here and when the time comes I'll join in the discussion and brewing.
Thats just the problem with champion in modern Faithless Looting dose it earlyer cheaper and has a realistic recast cost. If it had flash them maybe, but a turn three 2/1 with card selection as the ability is just to slow. Reflector Mage, bounce a problem and stops them recasting it, vendillion clique can be played instant speed and it fly's and it's 3 power and it acts as targeted discard or card selection for you.
Lastly the other contender for the slot (selkie) is also a merfolk (for adept) has 3 devotion (for master ) and instead for looting you become card nutral or net card gain with me an on the feild.
Lastly champion in stander eternalize ability is relevent in modern is much to expensive and pretty slow. If it cost 5 or 6 to eternalize and had a extra key word it would be a much stronger contender.
I see. Well I've been thinking of the deck and how it'll work in modern and I did like the idea of going into Jeskai. What do you think of this deck?
I didn't like the master of waves trick because it feels like a win more and when I tried it in Merfolk, it needs to untap to win, so it can be a turn bit too slow. I felt I needed it to win on the spot. So I put in the Copy cat combo for a potential turn 4 win. Saheeli also works well with the creatures with copying and gaining more tempo. And both cards work well with deck. Felidar can bounce other creatures as well. That said, I do still think I need more 1 drops. And I should be taking advantage of Snapcaster mages with the 6 bolts, but also at the same time, doesn't seem worth it with so little spells and very little ways to dig and dump. Just brainstorming for now though.
It's just based on theory and includes my favorite cards. It's likely no where near fully optimized, but I think I will have a lot of fun playing it. The sideboard will include the usual suspects- EE, Surgical Extraction, Abrade, Blood Moon, Izzet Staticaster, etc.
There are some really awesome URx wizards deck running around. Jeff Hoogland has put the deck on the forefront. I agree with anmicdeep about Grim Lavamancer. Grim looked really strong in several of Jeff's games.
I enjoyed watching Hooglanf top 8 @ Indy with U/R Wizards immensely! Seeing it on camera restores my faith in Delver again!
Next up, after various iterations my current Jeskai Naban list looks like this;
Most notably I have upped the cantrip count to 6, changed the configuration to 4 Peek and 2 Opt, to go alongside 3 main deck Meddling Mages. Vendilion Clique also makes the MD for extra interaction game 1 and extra looks at their hand for Meddling Mage.
I plan on running something close to this for the first half of the pptq season.

I’m incredibly excited about picking up a (at least semi-real) Modern Deck and I’ve chosen UR Wizards.
Here’s my list.
5x Island
1x Mountain
4x Steam Vents
4x Spirebluff Canal
4x Scalding Tarn
2x Polluted Delta
4x Soul Scar Mage
4x Ghitu Lavarunner
2x Grim Lavamancer

3x Adeliz, the Cinder Wind
4x Lightning Bolt

4x Pyroclasm
4x Searing Blood

Add the guy to a merfolk wizard deck. Seems legit with merfolk trickster or Harbinger

It looks pretty good actually though I'd probably maindeck Voidmage Prodigy (or Wizard's Retort) over Path to Exile to improve the spell-heavy matchups as the deck seems to able to handle creatures pretty well already.
I also prefer Harbinger of the Tides slightly over Merfolk Trickster, especially in an Aether Vial deck.
