UG Emerge: by Saffron olive of MTG Goldfish

This deck was just published today! It immediately caught my eye. Mostly because I was attempting a ramp deck of my own but this one is so much better.

Just thought I would get everyone's thoughts and to ask about tweaks.

I personally keep thinking drop Wretched Gryff for Vorapede



Would this work or would it hurt not having sanctum combo?

Or maybe Vorapede over Frost titan

I don't see how this works. Seems like too little payoff cards and too may small do nothing guys. 40 of the 60 cards are lands or 1/1s

the do nothing guys are just emerge fodder. The idea is to try to pull off multiple elder deep-fiend and tap the opponents lands down, turn after turn. I've been doing some testing and its not too bad.

If budget isn't a concern then Wurmcoil Engine is probably a far better option than Frost Titan.
The new Carnage Tyrant (or the budget Sagu Mauler) is pretty good curve-topper as well but unlike Wurmcoil can't be tutored for with Sanctum of Ugin.

Wood Elves is enough as ramp imho, Farhaven Elf (the bad Yavimaya Dryad) should be either Kitchen Finks against aggro or Rogue Refiner for card draw.
There are plenty of other 3-drops for emerge: Eternal Witness, Eldrazi Skyspawner or Vendilion Clique.

In the 4-drop slot I'd go with Whirler Rogue (the blue P&K) or Chameleon Colossus
(less good for emerging but a very solid creature which can use the extra mana).

Venser is probably fine in the SB though Mystic Snake or Glen Elendra Archmage could be better.

Wurmcoil seems like a no brainer. Good choice and I also agree vensir felt so weak when I played the deck like the weakest card in the deck.

I messed around with two different version of this in black and greem. The pay of card was the discard guy. but often decks only had cards that cost 3 or less so no value. The other one was eldrazi rock. The last one showed some promisse but having consist mana was difficult.

after seing safrons list today I thought you could probably do a mono blue verison with tron lands. Use Trinket mage / treasure mage as your 3 drops. Perhaps even run Solemn Simrularcum as your 4 drop.

In adition to the deep fiend, you can run wurmcoil engines instead of the frost titans. Instead of the griff you can run walking balista that scales very well with the tron lands.

Delve creatures seem like a natural fit for emerge. Why not run GY filling creatures and delve dudes so you can just chain battle cruiser magic.

4 sanctum with no thought-knot seer seems like low hanging fruit on dealing with combo decks. There are quite a few that can go off at instant speed and this keeps a chain of interaction.

Imo pitch sprawl for a stronger creature ETB value package via persist/undying and then up your card type to include traverse the ulvenwald - which effectively lets you tutor win cons and engine pieces galore.

Undying/persist also play very nice with kozilek's return if you don't use the dorks.

Deck looks fun and I may play with it some. I need to sit and brew though. These are just first glance thoughts - no testing behind this.

Here is my version of the deck:

Sagu Mauler is a stand-in for Carnage Tyrant.
I want to try out Gleancrawler as well as it seems pretty good with "Emerge".

Rogue Refiner is a solid card here, not sure if it is better than Kitchen Finks.
Whirler Rogue is pretty good as well, I haven't tested Chameleon Colossus here yet.

Condescend has been very good in the deck, I much prefer it to Remand here.

Mystic Snake has been pretty good so far from the board.
I don't really like Quicksilver Fountain here and replaced it with Acidic Slime in the board for Tron decks, another option can be
Bramblecrush/Mwonvuli Acid-Moss.

Coiling Oracle seems like a strict upgrade to Rogue Refiner.

as far as erza lands I dunno if I personally want to take the deck in that direction. I mean Im sure it works though.

With enough ramp I can see nissa, steward of elements being okay. She fixes draws or dumps out emerge fodder for free.

I played a black blue version that worked with heartless summoning. The idea was to double dip on heartless and pay 1 for filigree familiar then emerge minderbender for bb. It wasn't bad but fairly inconsistent

Not necessarily, Rogue Refiner is a better emerge target as you can go T3: Refiner T4: Deep-Fiend which you can't with Coiling Oracle.
It is also a more reasonable body on its own as a 3/2 for 3 rather than a 1/1 for 2.

After readjusting i descided to keep pretty close to his original build with a few changes

What about Lashweed Lurker? It seems fairly powerful, but unfortunately it competes with Elder Deep-Fiend's slot since they both cost 8 and have emerge 7. It seems like a fairly powerful card, though.

What's the idea behind Whirler Rogue? Just that it's something to sacrifice to emerge, but still gives you value?

Petty much, it can also make Wurmcoil/Deep-Fiend/Thragtusk or another creature unblockable to close out games.

Lashweed Lurker is ok but not as good as Deep-Fiend or as cheap (and evasive) as Wretched Gryff.

After some games with the deck I can say that Rogue Refiner isn't worth it and should be replaced by Kitchen Finks
(or a split with Vendilion Clique if you have it).

It also frees me 2x SB slots which I want to improving the go-wide aggro matchups, I consider various mass-bounce options like:
Aetherize - cheapest instant speed option that keeps your board intact (unlike Evacuation) as the deck doesn't have enough islands for Engulf the Shore.
Aetherspouts - more expensive but more powerful.
Whelming Wave - sorcery speed but rather cheap and doesn't bounce Elder Deep-Fiend which is an octopus.

Another (probably too cute) option is Icy Blast which can tap down the opponent's board for two turns for tempo.

Kitchen Finks does seem exactly what this deck wants at the 3-drop slot, but what about Foul Emissary? Surprised it wasn't mentioned since it's an obvious plant for Emerge, but it actually seems pretty good.

Seems perfectly reasonable, though not as good as a value creature if you don't happen to emerge it or if it gets removed.

All things considered it is a great fit for the deck and the best budget option (slightly better than Rogue Refiner/Eldrazi Skyspawner) alongside Wood Elves.


Since the deck is pretty fair and mostly geared towards beating midrange decks I wonder if sideboarding in a combo for Game 2 against unfair decks can be a good idea by taking out the emerge creatures.

The combo can be either Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Bounding Krasis with Eldritch Evolution to find the finisher
or Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder (and Eldritch Evolution as the tutor).

The combo plan might be easier to assemble if Foul Emissary is one of the 3-drops in the deck as it helps dig towards it.

Bounding could probably go main deck. Allows you to untap your big guys, is a decent size body, and fits well with the emerge guys.

How does it look ?

Looks like you took out the wretched deep-fiend plan on winning and put in some fluff.
Also is Simic Sky Swallower just pretty much better than Mauler?

I'm not that sure flying over trample is worth the extra mana, you can also play S.Mauler face down to keep up counters and turn it face up later.

Now that I think about it Mystic Snake might be better in the new list over Whirler Rogue for more options at instant speed.
I also consider puting back 2x Deep-Fiend which may be better than S.Mauler in the maindeck to play more as a flash deck.

Eldritch Evolution is actually a pretty reasonable card in the deck even when not comboing off and just grabbing: Thragtusk, Wurmcoil
(or S.Mauler) of a 3,4-drop.

Going to take the non budget version of seth's deck to my next few events and get in some online practice with it. I will check in and post here how it did.

I ran it through some practice on mtgo today. It didn't do as well as I would hope for. I just need to get better with mulligan decisions but the deck is kind of cool and fun to play. It just needs to ramp and curve out properly to work.
