Ever since Gideon of the Trials got spoiled, I've been toying with a tribal Gideon deck idea. I've seen WB versions, but I never saw mono white for modern. I've been mulling and lurking around the boards, and I think I came up with an idea. Now, this is just a prototype, but I think it can work. I'm hoping we can spring back and forth some ideas for this.
the idea is rough, but it needs some work. any ideas? i do like that pact of negation is slipped in and due to the emblem, they can be a surprise. sideboard also needs some festering.
my only ish is how a single removal can completely ruin your deck. One pulse, path, or push beats you. It's neat, but I don't think it will become competitive without a way to make him untargetable.
Or, we can keep it mono white and add Indestructibility. Using enchantments are rarely good though. I did pick up a play set of mana tithe if that helps.
2 b honest: the Deck looks boring & a bit weak. 4 Heart of Kiran is very daring. The Planeswalkers are the only ones you can crew em with & since theyre all Gideons, you can only have 1 out at a time. This rule could change in Ixalan though.
Dont get Wrath ? Lose to aggro. Combo kills you anway.
Really sorry, but a tribal Planeswalker-Deck can never compete imo.
Instead you sgould focus on including Gideon 5 in existing, proven Decks he fits. Im not talkin of Netdex though d;p
Very interesting counterpoints. Definitely food for thought. I do hope the planeswalker rule changes in ixalon, assuming the rule does change with the 'spoiled' rates/mythics.
Also, note this isn't comperely creatureless. Hawks are here and paths/condemns.
But some tweeking is always available. And hey, why not Sun Titan? It can get Gideon back if needed too.
If you run Sun Titan, which is a good idea, id almost change the Dech conpletely. For example Mindstone is great with Titan. Ramps into it & Gideons & can be reclaimed with Titan for endless card-drawing. I would also include Wall of Omens 4x Kitchen Finks, Emeria, banishing light & more great tatgets for Titan. “Titan Control“ should inspire you. White suns zenith ?
I would remove the Hawks. The rings, warhammer & the pacts. Oh & less Heart of Kiran.
well, with the new jace coming out, planesawlkers rules changed. you can now have many gideons on field as long as its not the same specific one. so, all three gideons in this deck can now co-exist. I've been toying with this deck for a whlle since I last posted. It's still mono-while, but its got a WUG feel to it.
21 Plains
4 Gideon of the Trials
3 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
2 Gideon Jura
4 Wall of Omens
2 Heart of Kiran
2 Restoration Angel
4 Kitchen Finks
2 Sun Titan
2 Oversoul of Dusk
4 Path to Exile
4 Pact of Negation
2 Summoning Pact
4 Wrath of God
Sideboard
2 Layline of Samctity
2 Stony Silemce
2 Rest in Peace
1 Gideon, Champion of Justice
2 Eidolon of Rhetoric
2 Solemnity
2 Kor Firewalker
2 Blessed Alliance
Thanks for goin over the idea. Yeah, I did see that Gideon deck. The problem was partly because I didn't thane the wb lands and thoughtseizes. The other problem wb didn't even hit me as a possibility.
I tried playing this deck with the new rule, and it's allot of fun.
ever since the rules change, I've been following the jace thread. one card that was brought up was Honor-Worn Shaku. If we use two Gideons and this, then we can get infinite mana. is this worth thinking about as a possible win scenario, or should this be dropped?

How exactly do you get infinite mana? O_o

with the new rules, planeswalkers are legendary. tap a gideon, untap honor-worn, tap honor-worn, add one mana... oops, you need to untap a gideon to make it work. lol, i misread the card.
Yes, the 'planeswalker creature' is when it's active, but not when it's just a planeswalker permanent. You can hero's downfall the planeswalker anytime you want. Just not when it's a creature.
Indestructibily can keep the planeswalker permanent safe from being destroyed. But it won't keep it being safe when your opponent attacks it and not blocked. I think Gideon will die that way.
Interesting deck build. I wasn't around when coldsnap wed around. It does add card draw which is good. Finding snow plains is going to be hard. Gideon Intervention is something we might want to consider.
Thanks for letting us know about this build, D90Dennis14.
Hi, I've started to brew a similar deck in monowhite and thought that it would be nice idea to give it a twist and figued that all these PW could be a good source for devotion.
the enchantment idea might be interesting. nykthos would be interesting considering allot of the spells require two white. could lead to fast mana for something like ugin or karn. you might want to consider Greater Auramancy as well. get some enchantment recursion too.
again, i havent tried anything black wuth this because i dont have any wb lands. good luck with the build.
Glad to hear the deck did well. And yes, I do worry thick might loose to counter magic. Maybe board in pact of negation. Gideon of the Trials ult can prevent game loss.
I thought I had brewed up something fun and original. Imagine my surprise when I found this thread already existed!
Anyway, I've been having a shocking amount of success on MTGO tourney practice with a similar version of this deck, enough so that I'm considering trying a few competitive leagues and even taking it to SCG Baltimore's Modern Classic this Sunday. Here's the 75 I'm running:
So far it's been a blast to play. I really like having Approach as the main win-con, since it means the lifegain the opponent gets from Wall of Shards is meaningless. Also, 32 cards are Snow, meaning we can get some serious value off of Scrying Sheets, which also means getting to 7 mana is normally trivial. Theoretically I think a 2/2 split of Wrath and Day of Judgment is correct to get around Meddling Mage, but I have 4 Beta Wraths sitting around begging to be used in tournament play.
I've been messing with an idea much like this too. Tbh it's a great idea but overall we need more win conditions. I think if you have Gideon throw some large creatures or mill cards to either just delay and win by milling or swing big late cuz the opponent can't physically win. Board sweeps would also be beneficial.

Archangel Avacyn can be potentially an option.
thanks for responding to the thread.
Oh! I just thought of spellskite. I just have to find them, lol.

Did you see the MTGGoldfish Against the Odds with the Tribal Gideon?
He did 4-1 (and could have done 5-0).
It looks like a sweet deck.
Modern: Soul Sisters
Commander: Isperia, Supreme Judge
I tried playing this deck with the new rule, and it's allot of fun.
Control: We already have it on UW Control, all we need it's two more room for Gideon. And a prison deck, like RW Prison.
Midrange: Jonatthan81's idea and MTG Goldfish deck. We can think on a MartyrProc style deck too.
Aggro: Using Kytheon. Maybe a RW Bushwhacker.
I will test MartyrProc shell first, then BW with 8x discard. My 3rd option will be UW Control.

Thanks for letting us know about this build, D90Dennis14.
My idea revolves around 4 Leyline of Sanctity and some amount of Runed Halo and Oath of Gideon in the main deck paired with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. You could take some freewins with leylines on the maindeck and ocassionaly power out 2 PW in early turns.
Can anyone please talk me out of trying this?
On more serious matters, the black splash for Lingering souls and discard as showcased in mtggoldfish seems quite promising.
again, i havent tried anything black wuth this because i dont have any wb lands. good luck with the build.
How'd the PTQ go?
