I haven't had any problems with storm. In Game 1, being on the play matters, unless you have interaction with Reflector Mage or whatever mainboard removal you have and if they don't kill you, you have Shalai to stall more time to combo. Post board games are much easier with graveyard hate(I run 2 rest in peace) and Eidolon of Rhetoric. I also board in a way to deal with Goblins as they sometimes anticipate Leyline of Sanctity.
Here's another option for a value tool that also digs for Felidar / Kiki. It shouldn't be too hard to build the deck with 20+ hits so you have a >80% success rate on the ETB.
Cool new card! But we already have a lot of card advantage options for 3 mana: Renegade Rallier, Tireless Tracker, Courser of Kruphix, Eternal Witness, Rogue Refiner etc, and only so many slots for this kind of card. Militia Bugler doesn't strike me as particularly explosive or powerful in comparison with those alternatives, but it seems pretty good at finding combo pieces in builds with 4 Felidar + 1-2 Kiki, and silver bullets after sideboarding. While there is a failure rate and a deckbuilding cost, it has a good body (especially if you're leaning more towards a combo finish and therefore valuing defensive stats) and isn't susceptible to graveyard hate or the like. With 4 Oaths, 4 Felidars, 4 Evolutions, 1-2 Kiki and 2-3 Militia Buglers, finding a combo by turn 5-6 seems rather easy. On the other hand, Bugler won't often be involved when we combo earlier than that, and there are a number of matchups where speed is of the essence.
Yeah, I thought so too, Humans could be interested in Militia Bugler, as well as the Druid Company decks. I think it will probably not quite make the cut in Saheeli Evolution, but it's close. As I wrote before, there are plenty of really good alternatives at cmc3. Meanwhile we're still waiting for 2-drop that's better than Wall of Omens or Coiling Oracle.
With respect to 2-drops, a slight upgrade to Wall of Omens or Coiling Oracle would already be great. They do the right thing, but they could be better overall cards. Improved stats, a relevant combat ability like reach, a situational activated ability (like on Shalai), or in case of Coiling Oracle, a better mana cost like 1G - any of that would be nice. Probably the best bonus would be a way to dig deeper than just one card, something like Opt or Sleight of Hand on a creature. I think I would play an 0/1 for 2 with such an ability.
Hey all. After 3 Disappointing events in a row i'm starting to have second thoughts and would appreciate some advice on what I can be doing better, whether any card choices are wrong, and some tips for improvement. While I have put up results with the deck, it seems like the increase in control has made it harder to succeed:
I just got home from a 50 player SCG IQ where I went 0:3 and dropped. Here is the 75 I registered:
Because of my work, my only way to play MTG is MTGO, I already sold all my paper collections 4 years ago but I still want to play MTG so here I am playing MTGO. I’ve been playing saheeli evolution for almost a month now(All practice games) and I really loved it. I learned a lot from this thread as well and that makes it more fun to play coz I can talk and interact with you guys somehow.
Anyway… I won 13/20 matches and I won my last 10 straight practice matches, 5 against tier 1 decks, and 3wins against tier 2-3 and 2 random/trial decks. And that made me feel ready to try a league. I went and try competitive league for the 1st time with this list.
Round 1 VS NAya ZOO
I wished him luck. And that’s what he got. Ultra luck. LOL!
G1 and G2 he hit me really hard. Till I dropped to 1 life. I can go off both games the next turn but I got fetch lands on same game.
Round 2 VS Storm
G1 he mulled to 5. He played steam vents and serum vision. And I just go off fast turn 3
G2 on the draw and I mulled to 5. Until his turn 2 he only played cantrips and passed. My turn 2 is a cobra. He didn’t get a land and just played turn 3 baral. My turn I played hallowed fountain, float green from cobra and evolve cobra to a Gaddock Teeg. But its not enough. He got all the shenanigans on his next turn.
G3 on the play. Turn 1 noble. Opp turn 1 serum. Turn 2 gaddock teeg attack noble. He didn’t go off turn 3. But I never get any combo pieces and he EOT echoing truth my gaddock. But he did not go off on his 4th turn and I won by beat down.
Round 3 VS BridgeVine
G1 on the play. Im not sure if I want to mull a 5 lands BOP and Voice VS an unknown deck so I kept. I fetch forest and BOP then passed. Opp T1 is street wraith played fetch the faithless looting and discarded 2 vengevine . Turn 2 I played voice and pass. Turn 2 he played skirk prospector and bomat courier to return vengvines into play and attack. I was able to delay the game a bit. With R. Mage then evo it to thragtusk but still not enough and I scooped next turn after he played ballista and bushwacker.
G2 on the play. Kept 7 with oath,non-forest fetch, hallowed fountain, suntitan, E.Evo, GQ and a voice. I turn 1 oath and got another voice. was able to delay the game a bit with 2 voice and evolve voice into rallier to get the voice again… I was able to beat him down.
G3 on the draw. I kept 7 with a better than hand than my precvious games. But he got a better opening. T1 Neonate. I played noble. T2 he F. looting and dropped a bridge from below and sacrificed neonate to get zombies played another neonate and hollow one. T2 R.Mage the hollow one and passed. And he just sacrificed his neonate on his turn then W. Ballista for zero to get more zombies then bolted my R. Mage to swing 1 zombie. That exiled his Bridge and I know he got a hollow one remaining on his hand. I got oath of nissa but hit lands only. No play this turn. He got F. looting top deck. I played F. Guardian to blink oath and got BBE. He played hollow one and ballista for 1 vengevine returned and attacked and I was forced to block. I topdecked saheeli and immediately slamed it for the combo but I forgot the ballista stupid me. I have linvala in my hand and should have played that 1st. That excitement cost me the game. definitely a noob mistake.
** I guess I shouldn’t have boarded out 3 E.Evo against this match up coz that is a good way to exile the Bridges from his yard? is it correct to remove it and go agro instead with BBE and some bullets?
Round 4 VS Jeskai Control
G1 on the play. I turn 2 voice. Then turn 3 E.Evo voice to magus of the moon. But he got a bolt for that. He got all the removals in the world to remove all the creatures I play. so he was able to sweep all the my creatures. I only have 5 lands and a sun titan left in my hand. I got a bit of luck and got a land to play sun titan and returned magus. He just passed during his turn. On my turn he let me attack(cobra Returned from titan triggered) so I will return a different creature from sun titan(Cobra) before he bolted magus. He got all the advantage now coz he has a flipped azcanta. next turn he S.Verdict to clear my board and I drew blank all the way.
G2 on the play. I kept a clunky hand coz I got magus and blood moon. All the creatures I play received a removal. I was able to play magus of the moon and blood moon he was able to remove both as well. Played sun titan to get blood moon but he got a path for my titan and played teferi to bounce the moon.
** Again I boarded out 3 Evolutions for BBE coz its bad against counter spells.. Is this correct?
Round 5 VS PONZA
G1 on the draw. T1 forest and utopia sprawl for him that hints a ponza. I played stomping ground coz I don’t have a fetch in hand that can get a forest. He T2 blood moon and that’s the end of the game.
G2 on the play – he kept 6 hand. He missed T2 land. T3 BOP for him met a staticaster. And he scooped.
G3 on the draw – T1 arbor for him. T1 noble for me. He turn 2 stone rain my forest. T2 cobra for me. His turn 3 was bad. Arbor and BOP. My Turn3 was Linvala. That crippled him I won the game.
I finished 2-3 but could have been 3-2 if not for that misplay against bridgevine. Any tips/tricks/advise/feedbacks or comments (Good or Bad) you can give will be very much appreciated.
sorry if i only upload an image. i don't how to put a list like @Rhavoreth did.
This Saturday 30th is the GP from Barcelona, and I'm going to it with this deck. It was a time since I last played it, but after testing the other deck, I prefer playing this one.
Last games I tried to adding to main board Spell Queller along with Meddling Mage. Both acted pretty decent, they synergizes pretty good protecting you and your creatures, at the same time more or less. With this changes, I think, for my games, that my main board it's pretty solid for what I have been testing.
Something I was pondering, it's: Crumble to Dust or Damping Sphere. If I face Valakut or Tron, Crumble, but facing Tron and Storm Damping it's much better. But if I add Gaddock, I think I would get rid of Crumble would go out. The more I think it, the more I like it, but I would like to hear your thought about it.

Freshly spoiled card from the upcoming Core Set. Not sure if this will see any play, but it could be problematic for us since it stops both Evolution and our combo, as well as some of our value plays with Rallier, Saheeli, Felidar or Sun Titan. Merfolk has mostly been replaced by Humans, but even Humans could play this if they really wanted to stop Goryos Vengeance, Through the Breach, Living End and Collected Company. Maybe some of the Company decks will even run this themselves.
I doubt Mistcaller will be omnipresent, nor will it regularly defeat us all on its own, but if it might see some niche play and annoy us.
Edit: Oh I'm stupid, the card says "nontoken", so we can still combo with Saheeli.
http://www.magicspoiler.com/mtg-spoiler/cleric/
Another spoiler, and a really nice one for us. A cheap creature that hoses graveyards, can be returned by Rallier, and has a nice body - I'm looking forward to this!
@maniospas: Mistcaller has some decent overlap with Gaddock Teeg. I think I like the latter better since it's more versatile, so I don't see myself playing Mistcaller.
I have my doubts about Amulet of Safekeeping. Out of the top tier decks, it affects only Storm, Mardu Pyromancer and maybe Burn. Besides that, it hits some more fringe decks like Abzan Midrange, UR Kiki, Saheeli Evolution, but not much else. That seems a little too narrow, and I don't see much upside in running this over Damping Sphere or Grafdigger's Cage in most decks. Storm can still use the same tools to answer this new piece of hate (Wipe Away, Echoing Truth, Repeal etc), and the new Amulet doesn't interfere with their ability to dig through their deck. People might try it in Tron or something like that, but I don't think we'll see too much of it.

The basic island is a just in case a blood moon hits the board and I don't have a Nissa to cast saheeli.
And sometime as we couldn't find the combo pieces, with Gavony we can empower our creatures to start smashing with them, as we got plenty of them.
Also last week I had to use the -7 from saheeli, since I was locked with the creature that makes your lifes cannot go undeer 7. It was my first time doing it hahaha.
I know it has been brought up a couple of times in this thread, but perhaps not enough: I think running 1-2 Spellskite is pretty good right now. It helps protect our combo (duh) better than Voice of Resurgence, especially against UW/UWx where getting a */*-token often doesn't matter enough since they have sweepers and so much removal. It also randomly wins you matches against Infect and Bogles. After sideboard it can protect our important hate cards such as Gaddock Teeg, Blood Moon, Eidolon of Rhetoric etc etc.
I'm currently running 3 Voice and 2 Spellskites main and feel pretty happy about it.
Spellskite used to be great a few years ago when a huge portion of the metagame relied on Lightning Bolt as their removal and Splinter Twin as their win condition. Nowadays, Infect and Bogles are the only matchups where it truly shines, and most of the controlling decks have access to Path, Push and/or Kolaghans Command to handle it efficiently. It can be useful against Burn and Affinity, but overall it has fewer good matchups than it used to have and there are better answers to it. Also, in times of Thought-Knot Seer, Gurmag Angler and Mantis Rider, the 0/4 body has become significantly worse. I can see running it in the right meta (lots of Bogles and Infect) but generally I prefer Shalai, multiple Gaddock Teegs, Eidolon, Rest in Peace or countermagic to fight the unfair decks (which obviously leaves me weak to specifically Bogles and Infect).
Lejoon: "in this current metagame" you say. How would you describe the current metagame? In my experience many of the biggest decks doesn't run that much interaction making the possibility to untap with Lotus Cobra quite possible.
A word regarding running 3-4 Renegade Rallier - together with 4 Eldritch Evolution they enable faster combo kills, even on turn 2. I don't think running a single Renegade Rallier is a good way to go. They are excellent both to combo quick and in the more grindier/fair matchups.
Cobra is definitely bad when you look at it only through the "classic card advantage" glasses. But decks like Tron, Storm, Bogles, Affinity, and even Humans and Hollow One, aren't decks you beat via card advantage. Sometimes it might work, but being explosive is a way better approach in my experience. I've had games where I spent a total of 11 mana on turn 4, casting several creatures and finally an Evolution to complete the combo and end the game. With just regular mana creatures, that would have taken at least one more turn, maybe more, and I might have lost that game instead. I've played games where I assembled the combo multiple times within the same turn, overloading the control deck's mana - they can only stop you so many times when they are still operating with just a handful of lands. I've won games where Cobra allowed me to resolve Gaddock Teeg through Logic Knot on turn 3 and lock out my control opponent. I've paid the Leonin Arbiter tax several turns in a row starting in turn 4 or so, and actually crawled out of the lock, all thanks to Cobra.
While none of this is card advantage in a strict sense, in all of these cases the speed provided by Cobra invalidated some of my opponents' cards. At this point, I've played a good number of matches with 4 Cobra and 4 Rallier in my deck, and while your arguments are absolutely correct (these cards have a low floor, and you experience that regularly), they can be excellent in the right meta. If you're mostly expecting slow, grindy decks that don't care about 2/1 and 3/2 bodies (Jund, Mardu, Jeskai), that's a different story. But Modern has a high percentage of matchups where speed matters a lot, and Cobra can provide that, even if the failure rate is significant.
Concerning the point about Rallier returning redundant lands: True, but we can always try and build our deck a way that works well when we are flooded. If you have a high density of cantrips (Oath, Wall of Omens, Horizon Canopy, Felidar/Rallier/Sun Titan to flicker/return them), you can always topdeck one of those and chain a few of them together to find something relevant. If you are more constrained on mana, that doesn't work nearly as well. (Also, more cantrips equals more frequent access to sideboard cards.)
The sideboard are just cards I’m considering and not actually a SB. I’ve mainly just tested the MB.
So blade splicer and huntmaster are the home brew cards that have worked out well enough to win a lot of match ups. Evolutioning, or blinking and copying either with felidar or Saheeli usually gives me enough of a board presence to stabilize, play (or bluff) the aggro route, and make the opponent have to deal with the board that I can continue to find my combo. Huntmaster can be so good to stabilize, especially if he flips a few times.
I haven’t been impressed my sun Titan much, as he seems more of a “win more” card. I wouldn’t mind replacing him with a solid 5 drop so I can evolution into it easier from a 3 drop on turn 3. Maybe keranos would be nice???
All in all I definitely need a lot more reps with this deck as I have a lot of deck I play, but don’t play too often.
Also I don’t own any lotus cobra, nor played with her so I can’t weight in on that topic.
Last I recall an SCG or GP player on camera right after Jace was unbanned, playing Jace to dig deep to find the combo. I believe the were in the top 16 but not sure if they made top 8. Thoughts on Jace tmS???

Because there is already Foul Emissary as a less restrictive option but it is only a 1/1.

Sideboard
Druid + Vizier deck is what I struggle most, since they can cast them, search them with Chord of Calling (which Spell Queller wouldn't be able to exile) and Eldritch Evolution. So one of my thoughts it's adding 4 Path to Exile or some Gaddock Teeg for those Chords. Maybe getting rid of Leylines of Sanctity?
Something I was pondering, it's: Crumble to Dust or Damping Sphere. If I face Valakut or Tron, Crumble, but facing Tron and Storm Damping it's much better. But if I add Gaddock, I think I would get rid of Crumble would go out. The more I think it, the more I like it, but I would like to hear your thought about it.
