Since the printing of phyrexian obliterator and fume spitter I've always been trying to build a horror deck (a deck with lot of horrors that horrifies my opponent).
Now I think I've found a build that seems strong enough and really good to compete :). Anyways it's not complete in some points so perhaps you could help here
Overview of the Deck
The deck goal is to play obliterators and some horror friends and winning after all ;). This deck wins the game by smashing the face but have some reach and lot of inner synergy inside it. Is a proactive deck that tries to win while being able to fight with creatures against other decks in the format.
You have to play this deck if you like black and green, if you like obliterators, if you hate counterspells (because we play one single type of creatures (horrors) and 4 Cavern of Souls and if you like synergy ;).
Card Choices Fume Spitter - One of the best one drops that wrecks lot of decks. This tiny 1/1 can kill any ramp creature in turn 1 so slows that decks that relies on birds or hierarchs. Also can kill any infect creature because of the counter is permanent, can kill confidants, and shrink any big dude in the table. Gnarlwood Dryad - This little dryad is going to be a 3/3 deathtouch dude almost every time in this deck for one single green mana. A great beater and a removal all in one. Loam Dryad - A horror that ramps you. It's not very impresive but making you drop obliterator in turn three instead four is great. Also make use of all your dudes when enter the battlefield and have summoning sickness. Spellskite - Great creature as all of you know and much more in this deck. It helps to your dudes (Obliterators I'm thinking on you) and prevent infect, boggles and such decks to go on. It fulfill almost another role being artifact and creature so helps to get delirium to pump the [card]Gnarlwood Dryad[/card Phyrexian Revoker - Another great creature that fulfills both roles, help you to stop combo in some decks and while can beat id dies helps you to reach delirium. Scrapheap Scrounger - The only non horror creature in the deck. This is good because help to get delirium, is a recursive beater and combos with the next guy. Eternal Scourge - This guy is going to be a Nightmare for any control deck. It can not be killed with spells and come back for 3 whenever you want. The only way to kill this guy is with a mass removal spell or in combat but, guess what? if any of thos situations happen you can exile it from graveyard with Scrapheap Scrounger, so he is ready to rock again Phyrexian Obliterator - The best horror in the deck. A nightmare for every creature based deck and a tank to kill the opponent and beat hard. Collective Brutality - This card here is awesome. It helps to get delirium on turn two for your dryads (turn 1 fetch dryad, turn 2 this (discarding any of our 12 artifact creatures) and you have a better wild nacatl while killing a creature in the other side or making discard a combo piece, removal, etc. Abrupt Decay - A catch all removal that helps you against faster decks. Anyways you probably want do diversify here. Cavern of Souls - The only reason to play only horrors But because they are so good on its own is only an upside.
The deck is working great for me but it have some problems right now.
First and the most important point to solve is that the deck lacks of card advantage. I'm thinking on using Painful Truths here (because we can draw 3 for 3 mana easily) but perhaps it could be slow and makes me to cut any creature of the deck (and all of them are so good ) so not sure what to cut for them.
Secondly perhaps more non-creature removal would be needed (Nahiri I'm watching at you!! (lucky we have the revokers ehh but they tend to be killed a lot) and any planeswalker or enchantment sometimes is difficult to get rid of if you can't use the decays (for example worship)) so may be a single or a couple of maelstrom pulse can be included here.
Well guys what do you think? The deck is strong and really funny and can compete seriously with the current meta because our creatures are answers to Tier decks.
I like a lot your idea. It seems that all your creatures disturb the tier decks in the format in one way or another. Beside of that you have 8 recursive creatures and a solid plan to beatdown, and you play obliterator which is a favorite of mine. I think I would play bob or painful truths as you said for card drawing (or even phyrexian arena) and a couple of maelstrom pulses for more removal.
I'll follow this thread because I've tested the deck against infect and Jund and is hilarious
I've been playing more with your list and won affinity and superfriends (revokers shine here). Anyways I think four of them perhaps are too much. As I said I like your list a lot but I would like to have more muscle beside obliterators.
The 1-drops in the deck seem rather weak imho and don't do much:
# Loam Dryad is basically a creature version of Springleaf Drum which isn't good, even something weak like Ulvenwald Captive might be better or just a non-horror mana dork like Birds of Paradise.
# Gnarlwood Dryad is probably not terrible but with only 4x instants and 4x sorceries achieving Delirium consistently (and early enough to matter) is unlikely.
# Fume Spitter should just be a removal spell imho (it functions almost like Virulent Wound), it is basically a bad Dead Weight/Disfigure/Tragic Slip/Funeral Charm.
I would just use something like Dismember in this slot (or a discard spell).
Spellskite and Phyrexian Revoker can be useful in some match-ups but 4x-of each of them seems way too much as they are rather low impact creatures when their abilities aren't useful.
Overall there isn't that much synergy between the creatures to justify running all horrors besides Cavern of Souls imho.
The list you propose Burning Force seems good too. I'm little worried about cutting artifact creatures because we need to have redundancy on them to reach delirium easily when you discard them.
Anyways having two more options to discard is good and a 4/4 body could be useful.
About the evolutions I'm not sure at all because we want that our spells remains in graveyard once they have been casted so I'm looking for another option here.
Also I've tested painful truth and it's not good here. It's slow at 3CC, it hurts you a lot (lightning oneself is not a great deal in a fast metagame as the one we have now) so I would like to find another way to fill my hand.
Any other ideas and suggestions?? Lot of thanks for your answers. People keep posting!!!
Anyways I can't include any of your suggestions because they have not synergy with the rest of the deck and doesn't fit on the theme. I was thinking on :
Filigree Familiar: card draw and card advantage when dies (but deck has not sac outlets). on the positive side is an artifact creature for delirium Fruit of the First Tree: 4 mana and enchantment. it doesn't seems to be the best option. Momentous Fall: 4 mana again, but it's instant, and with Scrapheap Scrounger seems nice. Bad combination with spellskite thought Vampiric Rites: Cheap and useful with Scrapheap Scrounger --> 2BB: draw a card, gain one life if you have food in grave for the robot.
What is your favourite?? any other suggestions??
Other things:
We can ramp using Search for tomorrow for ramping so 3rd turn obliterator would be possible
EDIT: How about playing deadly allure. It would be fantastic played in almost every creature of the deck (minus spellskite) but is something you can use two times, nice combo with obliterator and make Scrapheap Scrounger very useful
I was even thinking on playing thing in the ice which is an horror and if I play it and can transform it in any way I get an inmense board advantage because my creatures are not bounced.
The only problem with TiTi is that to support it I would need to include lot of spells (instant and sorceries) in the deck and dilute my threat density.
Perhaps could be enough playing 3 darkblast and 3 deadly allure (apart of all the ones I'm playing right now) and removing form the main 2 Eternal Scourge and
2 hidden horror?
What do you thing? Does it worthwhile? I'm not sure at all because I've already have 4 0/4's maindeck (spellskite) so having eight of them seems rather slow.
This list seems really good. The only issue I can think about is that it's a 4 color list and I don't think so that you can pay the unearth casting cost of Shambling remains with cavern of souls, isn't it? So with the fetches we have to search for 3 colors (1 Overgrown Tomb, 1 Blood Crypt, 1 Watery Grave) which seems bad :(. Perhaps we could use rainbow lands (like mana confluence instead, but then you can't search (and you need fetches in grave for delirium) and you are going to damage yourself a lot). Anothe option would be gemstone mine but you need to use it three times to get them into the yard. Anyways is good to have more food to collective brutality and hidden horror.
Blue is neccessary for not taking lot of damage of spellskite
Red for the unearth of Shambling Remains
Green is our main splash
I think that it would be possible but I'm trying to smooth the manabase in order to not loose to blood moon so I'm not very sold on adding more lands that are not swamps. Anyways I'll test it with a couple of urborgs and one arena. It could be fine with dryads and obliterators. The bad thing about arena is that the opponent chooses the creature so we are not going to kill what we want usually.
hopefully i help you guys out on your mission of making this deck more competitive.
if you've got any questions, then just ask.
Edit:
i didn't see your comment about Blood Moon. you really don't have to worry about it, but if you do, just get in the habit of taking your basics first with the Fetches you get. if you get a swamp and a forest on the battlefield by your turn two, it doesn't matter if you're on the draw or play. you'll have mana for a Pulse on your turn three. plays like this are why i also added an extra pulse in the sideboard.
As Burning says I prefer the list I was working in because Ernest's list have cards that I don't understand how to use in the deck.
Anyways I'm trying to make a horror tribal deck so removing horrors for not horror cards seems not the way to go for me :(.
Ernest about blood moon you are right, fetch my basics first, but Obliterator costs BBBB and sometimes I can't search for 4 swamps before blood moon lands.
the lotus cobras are there for a backup turn three Obliterator options, as well as Bloom Tender. if you miss out on a first turn bird via Fume Spitter, Cobra and Bloom tender are there for being able to ramp into Obliterator on turn three. but, with Eldritch Evolution in the deck, they could also be used to pull an Obliterator right out of your library on turn three if you don't have one in your hand.
Phyrexian Metamorph is in the deck in case you need to match a third turn siege rhino or a goyf that grew wicked quick, with the perk of being able to copy an Obliterator.
i didn't really think that collective brutality is as good as eldritch evolution. the choices are pretty meh for CoBru. for example, you have to pay two mana and discard a card just to hit an opponent with a Duress and make them lose 2 life and you gain two life.
Tooth and Nail is a way to grab some extra Obliterators or a Metamorph if you need it. there's even slight potential of casting it on turn 4, which could make for a string of obliterators hitting the battlefield over a few turns. plus, since the entwined cost is 9 mana, it's like a double green sun in one card if you pull two obliterators to the battlefield. you could use [c]Chord of Calling/c] here as well, but i like how explosive Tooth and Nail can be.
I can see the points after you reasoning so I can understand why yo choose those cards.
Anyways, I prefer keep going with my list because it has been working really good for me till now.
To kill goyfs and rhynos we have Gnarlwood Dryad that is better than the metamorph for this purpose, but if we see lot of emrakuls or such things and other big monsters we can include them in the mainlist. Not a bad card and it provides two types of cards for delirium so probably I could include them in MD. 2 seems to be the right number.
On the other hand I think I would not include Eldritch Evolution and Tooth and Nail. The first one is a 2x1 against us and we have not a win condition to make it worthwhile. The second one is really expensive and we probably are not going to be able to cast it in lot of games (your list uses lot of ramp but we don't need as much ramp because our main threat cost 4 mana, and drawing them in lategame sucks).
I've removed the shambling remains (although they were good as a discard card and as a beater, but including metamorphs requires more blue and that helps with spellskite issue).
Now I have to find another cheap beater that is a horror and that have synergy with the deck. If possible that could be recovered from grave. Return to eternal scourge?
perhaps a couple of Fleshwrither (which search obliterators)???
As you say setessan tactics is way better than prey upon. The only real drawback of tactics is that you have to tap the creature :(, so perhaps prey upon is better in that, but being an instant and pumping your guy is really nuts
Any more ideas?
Since you already use green mana. How about adding a single Fauna Shaman. With it's ability, you can exchange creatures in your hand to get an obliterator or whatever creature is needed at the moment. For example, discard a scrapheap scrounger to get a spellskite against Burn or Infect.
The problem with Fauna shaman is that she is not going to live enough to do something in the game :(. I've tested it in other decks and usually she is killed in the same turn she comes into play.
I think eldritch evolution would be better to do the same, but there is no place for it in the deck.
I was thinking about using red again to include some domri rade in the deck and returning to shambling remains option. Perhaps something like:
If you are going to splash red, you might as well go full out with it using Lightning bolt and Terminate to help shore up better removal. Or heck even keeping it sideboard for against decks with Blood Moon.
Further Red gives you Stromkirk Occultist for the Hidden Horror and allows you to mess with Bedlam Reveler which gives you more draw however you may need a few more cantrips for that to be as strong as we want. If i was to build this deck I would have it look something like this:
I personally feel you should still try to find places for Lightning bolts as they give you more reach for dealing with planeswalkers, life totals, or problem creatures.
While I love the idea of fighting, I feel its a bit too cute for the current meta where there are many small creatures so you may only get them to sac 3 trhings. I feel like Setessan Tactics could stay as a 2 of but I feel Domri Rade is a bit too cute. But then again I have never played you deck.
I think Domri should be more of a sideboard card as he seems very weak in fast games like infect or affinity. Thats where I feel with rancors you could put the Lightning bolts.
Edit: I'm going to type out why I think each card should be there in a bit.
I'm not sure about the manabase because I think we need at least 6 fetches to help delirium but cutting fastlands is something I don't like too much. What do you think about this new manabase configuration?
Beside of that, the list of creatures is almost the same, but I've include also the lightning bolts.
Perhaps we need now some piece of equipment to make our spellskites and little dudes be able to attack for more damage, so I was thinking on including Ghostfire Blade which make our spellskites bigger, transform our Phyrexian Revoker, Eternal Scourge and Scrapheap Scrounger into real monsters and in the worse scenario you can attach them for 3 which is not horrible.
I think the inclusion in the deck of Eternal Scourge and Ghostfire Blade gives the deck a strong lategame. If the scourge is exiled you can cast it again (so bye bye anger of the gods and path to exile) and if it dies it's easily recovered with Scrapheap Scrounger so you have two recursive threats that lategame can be gamechanging equiped with the balde because scourge would by a 5/5 and Scrounger a 5/4 which is not bad at all. The more I think on it the more I like it. To break stalled tables we have obliterator which is "unblockable" and equiped can finish the game easily. To protect everything you have spellskite so there is another synergy here.
One thing to look-out for is Summary Dismissal on your Phyrexian Obliterator's Ability. You can destroy it with combat damage (Ajani's Pridemate plus Life Gain works well here), then use Summary Dismissal (exile all other spells and counter all abilities) to prevent any counterattacks, including Hexproof or any counter-spell abilities (NOT counter-spells added on-top of SD on the stack.)
Other things to watch-out for: Angel of Jubilation- creatures can't be sacrificed for abilities

Any help is appreciated so keep posting!!!
I'll follow this thread because I've tested the deck against infect and Jund and is hilarious
I've been looking for horrors and found:
Despoiler of soulsseems much worse than Scrapheap Scrounger
Bedlam Reveler Is not on colors and you don't play enough spells but has draw carrds in its text and this is good
Gisela, the Broken Blade Again not in colors and doles't pass the bolt test but the card is beautiful.
Hidden Horror without card advantage...
Mindslicer this guy can be really hilarious
Phyrexian Vatmother solid alternate win con option
Voldaren Pariah you woul need more discard (madness) to make her playable
What do you think? does any of them worthwhile?
The 1-drops in the deck seem rather weak imho and don't do much:
# Loam Dryad is basically a creature version of Springleaf Drum which isn't good, even something weak like Ulvenwald Captive might be better or just a non-horror mana dork like Birds of Paradise.

# Fume Spitter should just be a removal spell imho (it functions almost like Virulent Wound), it is basically a bad Dead Weight/Disfigure/Tragic Slip/Funeral Charm.
I would just use something like Dismember in this slot (or a discard spell).
Some other horrors I that might be of some (marginal) use:
Creakwood Liege, Emrakul's Evangel, Faceless Butcher (black Fiend Hunter), Hunted Horror (needs to be built around negating it's drawback).

Please help me to find the pieces that would make this deck as good as it could be.
I need some card advantage(draw) that doesn't hurt us a lot and a way to gain life.
Any ideas?
Kitchen Finks, Courser of Kruphix, Obstinate Baloth/Thragtusk, Batterskull, Vampiric Link, Vampire Nighthawk, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Rite of Consumption/Devour Flesh, Basilisk Collar, Alms of the Vein, Sun Droplet, Essence Warden, Feed the Clan, Whip of Erebos, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Consuming Vapors, Pharika's Cure.
Card Draw:
Tireless Tracker, Altar's Reap, Morbid Curiosity, Grim Haruspex, Ob Nixilis Reignited.
Anyways I can't include any of your suggestions because they have not synergy with the rest of the deck and doesn't fit on the theme. I was thinking on :
Filigree Familiar: card draw and card advantage when dies (but deck has not sac outlets). on the positive side is an artifact creature for delirium

What is your favourite?? any other suggestions??

The only problem with TiTi is that to support it I would need to include lot of spells (instant and sorceries) in the deck and dilute my threat density.
I though on playing cards with dredge, flashback and/or retrace like life from the loam, darkblast, raven's crime, deadly allure and such things so they help to TiTi and reach delirium.
Please help!!!
Blue is neccessary for not taking lot of damage of spellskite
Red for the unearth of Shambling Remains
Green is our main splash
Can we cut any of them??
I think that it would be possible but I'm trying to smooth the manabase in order to not loose to blood moon so I'm not very sold on adding more lands that are not swamps. Anyways I'll test it with a couple of urborgs and one arena. It could be fine with dryads and obliterators. Any more ideas?

hopefully i help you guys out on your mission of making this deck more competitive.
if you've got any questions, then just ask.
Edit:
i didn't see your comment about Blood Moon. you really don't have to worry about it, but if you do, just get in the habit of taking your basics first with the Fetches you get. if you get a swamp and a forest on the battlefield by your turn two, it doesn't matter if you're on the draw or play. you'll have mana for a Pulse on your turn three. plays like this are why i also added an extra pulse in the sideboard.
My list right now is:
creatures- 28
4 Fume Spitter
4 Gnarlwood Dryad
4 Spellskite
2 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
3 hidden horror
3 Shambling Remains
4 Phyrexian Obliterator
Spells- 13
1 deadly allure
4 Collective Brutality
3 Abrupt Decay
1 Dismember
2 Maelstrom pulse
2 Setessan Tactics
Lands- 22
4 Blooming Marsh
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Bloodstained Mire
3 Cavern of Souls
1 Overgrown Tomb
2 Blood Crypt
5 Swamp
1 Forest
I've cut the blue land assuming that spellskite is going to hurt me and accepting it.
Also increased in 1 the quantity of the 4 power horrors to make the deck faster and more aggro.
Any suggestions??? More ideas?? any advice is welcome and lot of thanks for helping!!
So my list now is :
creatures- 28
4 Fume Spitter
4 Gnarlwood Dryad
4 Spellskite
2 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
3 hidden horror
2 Phyrexian Metamorph
4 Phyrexian Obliterator
Spells- 13
1 deadly allure
4 Collective Brutality
3 Abrupt Decay
1 Dismember
2 Maelstrom pulse
2 Setessan Tactics
Lands- 22
4 Blooming Marsh
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Bloodstained Mire
4 Cavern of Souls
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Watery Grave
5 Swamp
1 Forest
I've removed the shambling remains (although they were good as a discard card and as a beater, but including metamorphs requires more blue and that helps with spellskite issue).
Now I have to find another cheap beater that is a horror and that have synergy with the deck. If possible that could be recovered from grave. Return to eternal scourge?
perhaps a couple of Fleshwrither (which search obliterators)???
Another ideas or suggestions are welcome!!!!!
Since you already use green mana. How about adding a single Fauna Shaman. With it's ability, you can exchange creatures in your hand to get an obliterator or whatever creature is needed at the moment. For example, discard a scrapheap scrounger to get a spellskite against Burn or Infect.

I think eldritch evolution would be better to do the same, but there is no place for it in the deck.
I was thinking about using red again to include some domri rade in the deck and returning to shambling remains option. Perhaps something like:
Creatures - 28
4 Fume Spitter
4 Gnarlwood Dryad
4 Spellskite
2 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
3 hidden horror
2 Shambling Remains
1 Phyrexian Metamorph
4 Phyrexian Obliterator
Planeswalkers - 2
2 Domri Rade
Spells - 11
1 deadly allure
4 Collective Brutality
3 Abrupt Decay
1 Dismember
1 Maelstrom pulse
1 Setessan Tactics
Lands- 22
4 Blooming Marsh
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Bloodstained Mire
4 Cavern of Souls
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Blood Crypt
1 Watery Grave
5 Swamp
1 Forest
Further Red gives you Stromkirk Occultist for the Hidden Horror and allows you to mess with Bedlam Reveler which gives you more draw however you may need a few more cantrips for that to be as strong as we want. If i was to build this deck I would have it look something like this:
2 Bedlam Reveler
4 Gnarlwood Dryad
4 Hidden Horror
4 Phyrexian Obliterator
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
1 Spellskite
4 Stromkirk Occultist
4 Collective Brutality
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Traverse the Ulvenwald
Instants (7)
3 Abrupt Decay
4 Lightning Bolt
Land (23)
2 Blood Crypt
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Cavern of Souls
2 Forest
2 Overgrown Tomb
1 Stomping Ground
4 Swamp
4 Verdant Catacombs
While I love the idea of fighting, I feel its a bit too cute for the current meta where there are many small creatures so you may only get them to sac 3 trhings. I feel like Setessan Tactics could stay as a 2 of but I feel Domri Rade is a bit too cute. But then again I have never played you deck.
Also whats your current sideboard?
2 Terminate
1 Rakdos Charm
2 Destructive Revelry
2 Abrupt Decay
2 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Kolaghan's Command
2 Domri Rade
I think Domri should be more of a sideboard card as he seems very weak in fast games like infect or affinity. Thats where I feel with rancors you could put the Lightning bolts.
Edit: I'm going to type out why I think each card should be there in a bit.
4 Fume Spitter
4 Gnarlwood Dryad
4 Spellskite
2 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
3 hidden horror
2 Shambling Remainscourge
4 Phyrexian Obliterator
1 Domri Rade
Spells - 14
4 lightning Bolt
2 Traverse the Ulvenwald
4 Collective Brutality
1 Abrupt Decay
1 Dismember
1 Maelstrom pulse
1 Setessan Tactics
2 Blooming Marsh
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 blackcleave cliffs
4 Cavern of Souls
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Blood Crypt
4 Swamp
1 Forest
With that in mind my list would be:
4 Fume Spitter
4 Gnarlwood Dryad
4 Spellskite
4 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
4 Eternal Scourge
2 Hidden Horror
4 Phyrexian Obliterator
1 Domri Rade
Spells - 15
4 lightning Bolt
3 Ghostfire Blade
4 Collective Brutality
3 Abrupt Decay
1 Setessan Tactics
Lands- 21
2 Blooming Marsh
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 blackcleave cliffs
4 Cavern of Souls
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Blood Crypt
4 Swamp
1 Forest
(although I shoud cut at least five cards from that list and don't know what to cut)
What do you think?
