Hey folks! I have been out of magic for about 3-4 years, and I am looking to start playing again. After reading up on on some of the new cards, I decided to see what I could throw together for mono green. This deck will run just a tad slower than the traditional mono-green aggro decks I have been reading about, but I expect my local meta to be control heavy. I am hoping to keep my opponent defensive for the first few turns, then still have some gas afterward with creatures that scale and some recursion.
I hope to have designed the deck to synergize with Hardened Scales, but not depend upon it. The idea is to use it as bait for some of the more powerful removal spells. If left alone it makes my creatures substantially more powerful from doing the things that they were put in the deck to do anyway.
I have not purchased the cards for this deck so I am eager for feedback before I do so.
Young Wolf: I have always liked this guy. I got out of magic shortly after he was printed, so I never had the chance to give him a spin. I have him in this deck because I wanted lightning bolt resistant creatures, or at least have an upside when the inevitable happens.
Servant of the Scale: There was some competition for this slot. Experiment One was on the list a few times here. I ultimately decided not to use him, because I do not feel that he will trigger as consistently in this deck as he would in other decks. I chose Servant of the Scale because I could guarantee that he would trigger Avatar of the Resolute. I had also considered Endless One because I could scale him as the game progress, but I fear the temptation to overspend mana on him.
Avatar of the Resolute: Great beater, a 3/2 with two useful abilities plus he should be easy to pump. May change to include 4.
Strangleroot Geist: A burst of speed with haste and the undying ability makes him an auto-include.
Scavenging Ooze: At $10 canadian this is by far the most expensive card so far, however it is absolutely critical. Easy to pump while taking care of potential graveyard combo threats.
Predator Ooze: I am hoping that the indestructible outweighs his small size. Outside of match up against white, I shouldn't have to worry as hard about removal. There is a selection of more efficient beaters I could use. Leatherback Baloth or Dungrove Elder are both options. Predator Ooze beat out Dungrove Elder only because of the +1/+1 counters.
Eternal Witness: I keep wondering if I could do something more efficient with this slot. I need a large number of creatures, but I also want to keep the deck from running out of gas. I have my eye on Boggart Ram-Gang, but I am also open to other suggestions.
Enchantments
Rancor: A recurring boost with trample. Auto-include.
Hardened Scales: The card I built the deck around. Can't decide if I should be running a full set or only three. Either way this card is what makes this Green Aggro deck different from others.
Noxious Revival: More recursion, but also another way of stopping a graveyard combo deck.
Land
Llanowar Reborn: I don't mind this coming in play tapped. I may loose tempo in some situations, but in others I can gain an advantage later. Example Young Wolf dies in an attack on the second turn, after Undying triggers and it re-enters the battlefield, I could move the counter from Llanowar Reborn making the wolf a 3/3 instead. If Hardened Scales is on the field, that is two triggers, making the Young Wolf a 5/5.
Sideboard
Pit Fight: Useful against another aggro deck, but it also interacts with my own stuff. Cast this on Predator Ooze at the end of my opponents turn to get counters on both the Ooze and one of my undying creatures. I have debated main boarding this.
Dryad Militant: I pulled this from another green aggro decklist. It is supposed to deal with a deck running Snapcaster Mage. I am not sure how prevalent that will be in my local meta.
Unravel the Æther: Basic removal. I would only put this in an extreme case.
