Building with all my favorite Green and White cards, including Glare of Subdual. This is an incredible card that can play defensively or offensively but still hasn't made the grade in Modern. There are enough tools in the Selesnya colours to have a fighting chance against anything Glare doesn't solve but if it's up to having a fighting chance at a competitive FNM is an open question. This is what I've brewed up as a GW control concept:
The basic concept is to create a big board presence and lock them out of combat with Glare, pumping your team as you go. The deck can go big by pumping (through exalted, +1/+1 counters and Elspeth) or wide with token swarm. Oath of Nissa is an important card that smooths your game out mana wise and gives better access to your SB creature 1-ofs. This is an inherently fair deck in a fairly unfair format and so suffers at the level of core concept. I've aimed at consistency and disruption as two means of balancing the table so fighting 'fair' has a chance.
Auriok Champion, Kitchen Finks, Voice of Resurgence: All hard to kill, resilient bodies. This deck needs to keep bodies on board for Glare of Subdual to remain useful so hard to remove threats are key. Voice in particular works well with the deck as it synergizes with many of the cards in the deck. It gets pumped by Wilt-Leaf Liege, provides an early body to protect planeswalkers, leaves behind a token that can grow very large and helps against one of the decks natural weaknesses - permission spells. I chose to maindeck the full 4 for those reasons. Kitchen Finks is a standard sort of hold the line card that synergizes well with Liege, Nissa's +1/+1 ability and mana dorks. Auriok Champion is amazing. She should gain a lot of life for you between your creatures, token generators and your opponent's creatures. Champion in particular is a brutal card against burn or red based aggro decks. Terrible against Path or Merfolk or a plethora of other decks but can still hang-in there and gain you some life, thus she is in he board.
Scavenging Ooze is needed utility against graveyard decks and helps take advantage of running 6 dorks who inevitably die and then become fodder for Ooze. With the unbanning of Sword of the Meek these 2 slots could/should(?) be Qasali Pridemage. They both deal with the combo in different ways though I think Pridemage is more consistant as he simply destroys the Thopter Foundry. Scooze needs to wait for the Sword to actually be in the yard. Scooze has more application generally though...hard choice.
Wilt-Leaf Liege is a beater. It pumps the team quite a bit and scares opponent's from +1ing Liliana or using non-target discard. Brimaz, King of Oreskos is another beater (that avoids Lightning Bolt) and has strong synergies with Glare - and to a lesser extent with Auriok Champion.
Nissa, Voice of Zendikar. Would really like to see the 3cmc green Planeswalker be useful in Modern. She's not all that impressive really but I'd like to see what is possible with her. 6 mana dorks give a strong chance of her coming down turn 2. Multiples of her are actually great so you can +1, then -2 twice for a big team and then do it all again. She seems like the best way to produce tokens quickly and efficiently both card and mana wise.
Elspeth, Knight Errant keeps Glare working and can help close out the game. She gets the nod over Elspeth, Sun's Champion because 4CMC is a LOT LESS than 6. What about Gideon, Ally of Zendikar? I think Elspeth might be better, could be wrong though. Wondering about Garruk Wildspeaker in her place. He generates 2 mana, which allows a Garruk + Voice/Ooze/Dork or Garruk + Removal mana. Next turn he can threaten the win. He does seem more fragile than Elspeth in general and certainly on an open board.
Glare of Subdual is the card I want to make shine here. Taps down attackers, taps down combo enablers, taps down blockers...I think it's worth building around.
Oath of Nissa helps provide card filtering, needed in a deck like this.
Path to Exile, is a critical staple. I included 2x Dromoka's Command as well to have 6 MD removal cards as well as to help deal with red sweeper effects and problem enchantments like Bitterblossom. These slots could also potentially be Qasali-Pridemage depending on how the meta-game shakes out.
Mana:
Don't want to leave home without my Ghost Quarters! Playing 2 colours and dorks allows the full 4 to come to bear, Oath of Nissa helps get them when they are needed. Examples are Tron lands, Inkmoth Nexus and Nykthos/Enchanted Lands. Horizon Canopy can be painful but the optional card draw is really nice in GW. Oran-Rief, the Vastwood is just a possibly worse Gavony Township but it's coloured and is cheap to activate, hits most of my guys. If Garruk Wildspeaker is included I would certainly play it.
Sideboard: Leyline of Sanctity is a great hoser for discard, burn and again...various combo decks. Hate using 3 board slots but I'm a bit gun shy about not playing it. Kataki, War's Wage helps against Affinity, Lantern and now Thopter Foundry. Spellskite comes in against removal heavy decks and Infect, Boggles. Choke All hail Choke! What a nightmare of a card. Great reason to play green all on its own. Fracturing Gust against affinity and random enchantment decks...this is FNM after-all. Can wipe out Thopter combo and tokens. Gaddock Teeg good catch-all against Wrath effects and some combos. Linvala, Keeper of Silence helps shut down creature combos and slow down Dork decks. Magus of the Tabernacle helps against swarm decks, Linger Soul decks, Thopter combo decks. Rest in Peace when you need more powerful GY hate. Eidolon of Rhetoric storm, spell heavy burn decks, Ancestral Vision. Auriok Champion great at buying lots of time, great against Jund, burn and many other decks.
This is not a budget deck by any means...sorry about that. I just happen to have been playing these cards for many, many years. I'd love any critical suggestions.
It seems like a very interesting deck. One card I would potentially consider for the sideboard would be Mark of Asylum as that would help against sweepers such as Anger of the Gods and Pyroclasm.
But Dromokas Command can safe from these Sweepers too. Even in mainboard.
I ADORE those Glare Decks & play such a Deck myself. But dont cha think your Deck would work much better with Townships ? I can comprehend what Pain Tron is though.
I personally could never relenquish to Township ever.
I would definately add 2 Gideon, Ally to the Deck. & maybe 1 less Nissa. Shes perfect for such a Deck, even if 0/1 seem week.it works well in a real game in chumpblocking, crowding & raisin loyality, while defending. No other 3 Mana Planeswalker defends you by + if defense is not needed, get multiple anthems. You have to try Gideon too. Hes just so much Beating ! Should work alongside Elspeth.
8 manadorks are perfect too, cuz its more reliant acceleration, beneficial to Glare & better for township builds. I personally play some Selesnya Sanctuaries in case my manadorks get removed, i still get to 4 mana reliably. Very underraded lands.
Brimaz is indeed INSANE with Glare together.
I personally play Precinct Captain & Blade Splicer to for the Decks purpose. Even Selesnya Evangel works surprisingly well, but very slow.
