Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, I didn't see anywhere else to place this except for the intro forum which seems very inactive.
Me and my wife have become very interested in playing after spending weeks on MTG: Puzzle Quest. While I'm aware they are completely different games, we are still interested in playing the real thing.
I'm wondering if there is a deck similar to what I play in MTG:PQ, I use Jace, and rely heavily on limiting my opponents mana and using spells that either disable monsters, or send them to their opponents hand.
I use for example, Spinx's Tutelage (which in the game makes it so every time I draw a card, their next card in hand costs 2 extra mana) and various cards that allow me to draw cards.
While my offensive isn't the best, I enjoy crippling my opponents while I peel away at them slowly. Are there any known decks or does anyone have an idea on how to build such a deck? I'm not really worried about budget but not trying to go tournament competitive either, thanks for any help.
Hello friend, if that's the case you'd best go to the casual forum.
The type of deck you want does exist but just be aware that cards with the same name can be very different here in comparison to Puzzle Quest (Tutelage, for example, doesn't make cards cost more. It takes two cards from their library every turn).
Sending back to hand is very Blue. Disabling monsters sounds either Blue or White. Mana limiting is harder because it often involves destroying lands and that's not often found in those colors.
Hope you find what you're looking for.

RIP Magic Duels. Wizards will regret what they did to you.
I think the best way to to check out the so called "Duel Decks". They are two preconstructed, ready to play, decks that are made to play against each other. Also most Duel Decks (there are many versions) are quite capable to handle the other Duel Decks.
Sounds like a blue/white deck is what you're looking for.
Enchantments like Propaganda, Ghostly Prison and Sphere of Safety will limit your opponent's mana by making them pay if they want to attack or block. And if you are playing multiple enchantments, you might as well play a couple of copies of Ethereal Armor, to beef up one of your creatures.
Creatures with flying or unblockable will be your main mode of attack. Invisible Stalker is hard for your opponenet to get rid of, and Lyev Skyknight can temporarily disable one of your opponent's creatures.
Other worthwhile creatures might include Banisher Priest and Fiend Hunter, which can get rid of an opponent's creature (until yours dies, then they get it back). Windborn Muse has a similar effect to the enchantments listed above.
And of course, blue gets various counterspells, which let you negate one of your opponent's plays. However, these are usually considered unfun by newer players. Examples include Cancel and Mana Leak.
To me, this sounds like a really fun deck to play... but possibly miserable for your opponent, especially if they are also a newer player. You say you will be playing with your wife to start out? Definitely work together on both decks, and make sure that each has a reasonable chance of beating the other.
IMO buying dual decks is a waste. You don't need to buy product to learn how to play the game and the dual decks are mostly worthless after you've learned how to play anyway. Unfortunately, you will quickly learn that good cards cost money and the best way to avoid paying outright for cards is by trading cards. And, obviously, the only way to do that is to have/buy cards in the first place. My suggestion is that you and your special lady friend buy a box or two, draft some decks out of some packs to acclimate yourselves with the set, and then use those cards to trade for things you want to put into your U/W deck OR make decks out of what you unwrapped
Right now, there's an alright chance of you pulling a very valuable full art foil expedition land out of Battle for Zendikar and Oath of the Gate Watch, which depending on the card, could be worth what you payed for one or both of the boxes (just hope you don't pull a Kor Haven and pull a Scalding Tarn or Wasteland ).
I very much disagree on that :). Duel Decks are maybe not up to par with any tournament deck, but most people don't play tournaments. Maybe they just want to play together. And when they discover the game, they might want to find other players. Or not.
And starting players should not worry AT ALL about monetary value. Just buy what makes you happy and what makes you having fun.
When you are truly hooked you start reading and learn more about the inner depths of the game, but that should be of no consideration of what you buy as your first catds.
tl;dr duel decks are narrow in what they actual bring you in terms of value and fun. Sure they're balanced against each other in 1v1, but they specifically don't include wacky hijinks or tricky tricks because it would 'confuse' 'new' 'people', which makes the game fun to play almost as much as building your own deck from cards you unwrap or trade for. The big issue I had with starting your magic collection/interest/hobby with duel decks is they are quite stinky once you want to try your own ideas/innovations out. It's best to plunge in and roll around in boosters, IMO.
I do love the idea of just plunging in. I did that myself and it was wonderful :). But to get as many people playing as possible, preconstructed decks are a really good place to start, because not everybody has the time to dive into the wonderful and deep world of Magic. And not everybody will play at the level some of us do. So I do somewhat agree with what you say, but I do think that giving people a preconstructed deck - mostly if they don't have access to somebody who has knowledge of the game - is a great way to introduce them. If they want the next level, we might abandon the precon. Or build upon it. If they don't want the next level, at least they have fun decks to play with and to tinker with.
Lodestone golem is quite good at taxing an opponent. Also it's not super complicated to play it, there are more and less expensive versions of the deck it functions okay without the really $$ cards.
I updated it to a modern version, it was the heartless summoning version where I did some crazying things like sphinx summoner search for Phyrexian metamorph, tap the sphinx for mana with grand architect, play metamorph copy sphinx search for a metamorph.. repeat. or repeatedly copying lodestone golems so my opponents couldn't cast spells.
What I did was kind of similar to the "Plunging in" that was described above, but I already had an idea of what I wanted to do. I bought 2 Vraska The Unseen at my local magic shop because I knew I wanted to base my deck around her. Then I bought a Deckbuilder's Toolkit, some Booster Packs, and 2 Preconstructed decks I found on Amazon, one black and one white. My deck turned out really well in my opinion, and you can check it out here. Another thing you can do is download Magic: Duels on your PC. It gives you a really good idea of what rules are and how to play. It also gives you some prebuilt decks to mess around with, to let you see what the different colors can do.
