I hear you. The deck very much leans on Painter's Servant and would benefit from having slots 5-8 with the same effect. The closest thing we have is Shifting Sky. I used to run 4 of them but drawing those when Painter was out was terrible. It's insurance for ensuring black but it hurts our plan since it's a replacement effect and not in addition to. Hopefully if we return to that plane we will get some more cards that manipulate color, specifically spell and/or permanent color. This deck may still be one card away from being truly competitive.
Saw you talk about the deck quick in the Grand Architect thread, since painter in legacy got screwed by proxy of the top ban, we must find a home for the servant~ Loving the idea.
The most recent innovation with using Aether Vial to get creatures into play has me thinking about this deck again. Playing out the pro black creatures and using Vial to get Painter into play in response seemed to work well at the GP when playing against removal heavy decks. This deck needs a way to just shut the door on the opponent and I'm thinking of going back and testing a Gifts Ungiven package with Iona to keep them from casting anything for the rest of the game. So end of opp Turn 4 Gifts into Iona package, untap, vial in Painter. That should be GG
Hey, nice deck, love the idea! I was thinking, how about Robe of Mirrors to protect the painter? Everything else has protection, except this guy.. This a one drop solution.
I like one drop solutions. I have to say, I don't think I have ever run across this card while searching for solutions to protect Painter. I was always looking for "protection from" spells.
What I like with Rallier is that we'd play green (Bant) with a potential Eldritch Evolution package (or even Collected Company). Not being able to search for Painter makes the deck clunky.
Just food for thought, i'll try the deck and share my experience, looks fun.
Distorting Lens seems better to be than shifting sky because most of the time you only need one thing to be black at that moment. It can turn the deck 'On' sooner and i think that outweighs the times when we'd rather have multiple creatures black.
If only Black Ward was Modern legal. There doesn't seem to be any auras cmc less than 4 that give color protections like we'd like.
Leonin Abunas comes to mind but he probably cost way too much for the impact he has. That said who can put a price on keeping our Painter alive.

A white / artifact centric version could play Inventors' Fair, not sure it's doable though, But Glimmervoid and Spire of Industry can fix Devout Lightcaster's cmc tension.

There is Pentarch Ward.
Good catch, even replaces itself. Might be good for a turn 5 play dropping it and servant. Playing out our creatures beforehand.
