Hey guys, wrote a 4000-word article on tips & tricks while playing the deck. Combined with the sideboarding and mulligan guides, that should be enough to get anyone started! Enjoy.
Good article for sure, thanks for the write up. How much better is copter than key to the city? Gonna try it tomorrow.

I think Copter is irreplaceable in this deck. Key is so clearly bad that I have never tried it. We don't have two mana to throw around for loots.
the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.

Here's a dumb little write up about the invitational at my store. I went 3-1 in the modern section (split modern/standard) and walked away with a good feeling for GP Toronto next week. This is my first one, sorry if it sucks.
This guy has been on Affinity since before I was playing modern about three years ago, and we somehow always end up playing in our stores weekly modern events.
Game 1: On the play
Turn one I drop a chalice on zero and a mimic, he goes land spring leaf. Turn two I drop chalice on 1 and hit for 2. He plays a land and passes. Turn 3 I play a reality smasher and hit for 10. The rest of the game is me using the two dismembers I found to keep his two 2 drops off the board and attacking.
Game 2
I keep a removal heavy hand, with a scourge, temple, and gemstone caverns. Exile to scourge to the gemstone. His turn one is 2 ornithopters, manland, mox opal, and cranial plating. NEAT. I count artifacts and decide that I with my dismembers only costing two life I can take a hit from a suited up ornithopter and play the scourge out. Turn 2 he plays a vault scourge, equips an ornithopter and attacks, taking 5. I play a ghost quarter and pass. He plays a spire of industry, giving him the double black for plating shenanigans and attacks. I spatial contortion the ornithopter, and once he switches the plating to vault scourge dismember it. I draw another dismember and cast it main phase to get in for 3 and avoid arcbound blowouts. His board is now mox, spire, manland, cranial. On his turn 4 he plays an arcbound and equips. I dismember it after triple checking he can't grow it out of range, which was probably not necessary. I draw and play chalice for 2, eventually ghost quarter his manland and ride the scourge to victory. I saw three dismembers and a warping wail, which just felt great.
Round 2 Jund Living End
Game 1: I'm doing my thing and getting Fulminator Maged on turn two and turn 3. I fail to recognize it as living end, mostly because theres rumors of some land destruction deck running around, and partly because it's been awhile. I get blown out by Living end and scoop on one land.
-4 Guides
+4 Relics
Game 2: On play, I go temple mimic, he goes shockland pass, I go temple TKS, take one of two cyclers swing four, he cycles EOT, plays land on his and passes, My turn I draw and play smasher, swing for 14, and win. Turn 3 kill.
Game 3: I Powder once and keep a hand with scavenger grounds and relic. I play relic t1, which he kills with his Ignot Chewer on his turn two. I draw and play another relic, and pass, keeping him from really doing anything. Next turn I play a scavenger grounds and attack with manlands keeping relic up. The rest of the game is me sandbagging my smashers until the end and him doing nothing with two gravehaters on the field.
Round 3: Eldrazi Tron
Game 1: On the draw, I keep a hand with gemstone caverns serum powder, chalice, smugglers copter, smasher, temple, Mimic. Exile to powder to the gemstones. My heart sinks as I see an Urza's Mine into an expedition map from my opponent. I play a temple into a smugglers copter, getting ready to loot away my dead chalice. In the end, I cast the Copter on turn one, and loot away dead cards. I trade my mimic for his thought-knot when he's forced to block it, stuck on a temple, mine, mine. he dismembers my copter and my thought knot takes away his smasher, eventually attacking next to scourge into a reshaper and 3/3 endless one and 2/2 endless one so everything trades. He draws another smasher off of reshaper and another card off of though-knot. Second-main I thought-knot and take his smasher, eventually casting one of my own and closing the game out.
Game 2: He goes Power Plant, pass, I go temple mimic, he goes Powerplant pass, I go mutavalt, scourge, attack for 3. He goes Mine, 3/3 endless one pass. I go blinkmoth, play a reshaper, attack and trade my mimic for his endless one. He plays smasher, which I dismember, getting rid of a powder I drew. I then play a smahser and attack for 8, putting him to 3, and he sccops to me attacking with manlands next turn.
Round 4: Burn
Game 1: I go first and play a temple into a mimic, he plays a goblin guide and attacks, and I chalice for 1 on turn 2. Hes stuck on one land. Smasher comes down a turn later and his life total falls to zero over the next couple turns.
-4 Dismember
-1 Copter
+3 Spatial
+2 Ratchet
Game 2: He spends about 5-8 minutes side boarding, and I get a little distracted in a conversation with the person watching next to me. When were finally ready to play I keep a dumb hand with a turn 2 chalice some land an endless one and a smasher, still talking to that person next to me. I watch as his goblin guides give me lands on top of the lands I draw for turn four draw steps in a row. I die. I need to get better at multitasking.
Game 3: I powder 3 times, getting 2 scourge into exile. Cast mimic turn one, ready to smasher on turn 4, playing scourges in the meantime He plays a guide, flipping a spatial contortion. He takes some time reading it, then looking at his hand, then reading it again. I'm getting anxious, and when it's finally my turn I just attack and pass after playing a land, missing casting a scourge which would have served as another point of damage and a blocker. Eventually, he just burns me out as I tilt out and make dumb mistakes.
3-1. I Also went 3-1 in the standard portion, having never played standard and borrowing a deck from someone during the lunch break.
Overall I still love this deck and just need to work on not getting tilted, something I'm usually pretty good about.
Copter is real good, better than Key, but I still think key isn't a terrible choice, it has won me many games I wasn't supposed to win.
I am 6-2 going into day 2 of GP Toronto, my first gp.
Wins against lantern, e tron, bg tron, simic evolve, Duke's abzan list, and grixis control.
Lost to storm and jeskai control.
Too bad, those are great matchups too. I find Storm almost impossible to lose with this plan; did you use it? Good luck tomorrow; I'll watch for you on camera!
BTW I'm also on a 3-1 Matter/One split and am considering a 4th Matter over the One right now. Also running a 4th Bomb in the side over the second Surg/Needle (still on 2 Shot).
the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.

Both games went to 3 and were close, I just had those first big event jitters and made dumb mistakes. Like I could have just held scavenger grounds up and hit with mimic for one more turn but I rushed my decisions. It got better as the day went on.

I lost to burn with an excellent start to game 3, exiling scourge to gemstone and playing temple chalice on 1. My ending hand was 1x powder 3x tks, 1x smasher, no lands, I did cast a matter reshaper tough that got blazed for the last 3. He reved the chalice and I had a second one from my scry to put on one again. Any land made me way favored any two lands won me that game.
Lost to 5 color shadow needing him to just not draw a creature 3 turns in a row, he drew those and a Lili last hope to reccur another dude.
Lost to pyromancer powdering and Mulligans to 4 twice, getting chalices and mimics but nothing else.
Bummed but I think I played smart, so less to beat myself up about. GP Hartford next.

A tip: when you get those nut openers against Burn, lead on Scourge and then cast TKS before the Chalice to yank Revelry out of their hand. Should be smooth sailing from there. The bodies alone are a hassle for them.
No mistake in the article; it says +15 which means you bring in the entire sideboard.

Also vs. Burn it is sometimes right to Ghost Quarter their Stomping Ground, if you want to protect a Chalice. They only have that one land for G, so if you get it then they are cut off from Revelry mana.
I get that this was not an option for you in that case, but it does come up.
So now that Jace and BBE are unbanned are we better positioned that E-Tron? I've heard that tron decks are going to take a hit due to the unbannings...
So now that Jace and BBE are unbanned are we better positioned that E-Tron? I've heard that tron decks are going to take a hit due to the unbannings...
I've preferred this deck's positioning to Tron's for a while now. But I think overall these unbans benefit us more. Jund is already the hardest BGx deck for us to beat thanks to Ancient Grudge and Huntmaster; they'll be losing Hunt now. We don't care so much about a 3/2. In my preliminary testing against this deck I think it's likely to stay the same or get a little better for us.
I haven't tested at all against Ux decks with Jace, but Smasher, Mutavault, and Blinkmoth all look amazing against the planeswalker on paper. These matchups were a breeze pre-unban thanks to Scourge/Relic and Temple generally (not necessarily so for E-Tron) and I think they will remain favorable.
So I don't anticipate Jund or Ux becoming much better against us post-unban. But I don't think they become much better against E-Tron either. If we make gains over that deck in terms of positioning, I think they will be marginal.
the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.
After this weekend and with the unbannings I'm going to drop Endless one from the main for the fourth matter reshaper, I think fatal push will be pretty well represented for a while.
I'm also dropping the warping wail in the side, it was a relic from the scapeshift heavy meta this summer in North Carolina, and scapeshift is under performing. I think I'm going to either add another surgical or experiment with an endbringer. I'm less interested in a gutshot right now but we'll see how the meta shakes out.

recent 5-0 list... pretty stock. this was day of/pre jace unban. Jace isnt a big deal for us, BUT i think with all the blue decks running around it might be a good time to jam 2 cavern of souls in the list... not sure which utility lands to cut though... maybe 1 scavenger ground 1 sea gate? ... idk. thoughts?
Just curious if anyone has tried a couple Vesuva?
Thinking about trying them and would like to hear what others think of them.

Jace and BBE existing is a net gain for us. We post favorable matchups against the decks that use these cards, and the matchups are still good once they become legal. In fact, these matchups improve marginally---BBE is way less threatening than something like Huntmaster or even Hazoret out of Jund; we don't care about a 3/2 or most of the deck's cards. Similarly, Mutavault and Smasher are answers to Jace and we're too aggressive for the walker to do much against us regardless.
I expect we'll see a lot of more this deck in the 5-0s with the new data update 🦖

Boys,Do you think chalice id good in the actual meta? I think the mtgnorin's deck is better with reliquia progenitores the main versus Jund and snapcaster,Do you agree?
Chalice is necessary for this deck IMO. You need that free win dimension pre-board to maximize your openers. Relic is better than Chalice against UW Jace decks (I side out Chalice and Guide in these matchups) but it doesn't matter because a) these decks make up a small portion of the meta and b) we already crush them, so further hedging in the mainboard doesn't make any sense.
I have tried Field of Ruin. To support it, we would want a third basic, so it actually takes up more than just 4 slots (and, as mentioned, our land slots are very tight already). Even then, running our own Fields opens us to getting "Wastelanded" by enemy Fields or blanking the search of their Paths. The final strike against Field is how mana-intensive it is. If we want to represent an activation for, say, a Colonnade, we can't spend the rest of our mana on something like Smasher when it means going below three untapped lands (Field and two others), which is often, especially post-board with mana-hungry plans like Relic/Scourge. That means we have to Ruin the Colonnade on a turn before it gets activated, which again strains our development mana and notably doesn't tax opposing mana at all.
We don't run clunky top-end cards like Karn. Our curve stops at five. Losing a land in play to disrupt opponents for free isn't that big a drawback for us, so we firmly prefer Quarter. Additionally, Quarter hits basic lands, which is relevant against Arbiter decks (preventing their lock by threatening to Strip Mine them back) and greedy color decks like Shadow.

I play with 2 cavern and they are really good. Sometimes even I have another 1 in my sideboard. Like ashtoncutcher say, Jace and BBE seems good for us.
mtgnorin,Field of ruin in order to Ghost Quarter or Tectonic Edge,do you think is better?with Field of ruin don't miss land and destroy non basic land too.
hi, i am mtgnorin but have some problems with my notebook and cant use my account too, so i try now smarthphone. Field of ruin cost 3 mana and this is too much for me, because we are full of 3 mana like reshaper, scourge, powder and endless one even you play like me 3 wastes. By the way, More UW means more field of ruin and more path and bbe means more bloodmoon to fight against, so you should change and use 3 wastes too

i was very happy about this unbannings because of this. It is great for me if i face one of this opponents, but dont forget maybe now some heavy fast creature Decks come out now to fight jace and jund, so chalice is great if you face this opponents like bogles. Not easy to See meta full at this point, but i am happy tarmogoyf comes back. Played by the way in a small tournament yesterday 2:1 and lost against bogles. But was OK to become 3 booster, even it was so small. I will say watch not only UW and jund , keep your eyes against Decks trying fight them too
Might be a little off topic, but what do you guys think of the "Eldrazi Stompy & Taxes" variant of this deck with Thalia, Arbiter, and Displacer off a white splash?
The thought of T1'ing an Arbiter or Thalia is pretty gas. Frank Karsten's calculator does say the deck needs more white sources.

i like it, you beat control, but on the other side i do this sure too...soo i dont see the benefit. Maybe sideboard is lot better with white but without my mutavaults, tectonic edge i feel naked and maybe you have problems sometime getting white our colourless for our eldrazi. I used to play this deck and it was great when Storm was big for a few months last fall. It's also good against GDS but the deck folds to anything that goes wide (ie. CoCo decks, and now BBE decks probably). Burn is basically a bye. I also found it extremely hard to pilot.
This deck is far more versatile due to its manlands and more consistent due to Serum Powder.

No mistake in the article; it says +15 which means you bring in the entire sideboard.

I get that this was not an option for you in that case, but it does come up.

Jace isnt a big deal for us, BUT i think with all the blue decks running around it might be a good time to jam 2 cavern of souls in the list... not sure which utility lands to cut though... maybe 1 scavenger ground 1 sea gate? ... idk. thoughts?
Thinking about trying them and would like to hear what others think of them.
Pauper: UdelverUthey slaughtered my deck i miss gush and daze..Turn 6 Karn > Turn 2 Phage
I expect we'll see a lot of more this deck in the 5-0s with the new data update 🦖

The thought of T1'ing an Arbiter or Thalia is pretty gas. Frank Karsten's calculator does say the deck needs more white sources.
