Hi all! I've been out the loop on this deck for a few months now but am thinking about coming back. I wanted to ask -- how helpful has Blast Zone been?
Blast zone is a Blast. It's one of the best additions to Stompy for a long time. Depending on meta, I would play 2-4. It's not that useful vs aggro matchups as it may seem, as often you are not fast enought to crack it, but it's very good vs midrange opponents - and a great tool to remove non-creature permanents, our old enemy.
Still under the radar, not being talked about, but lookee here at Jack Champagne's list, 6th at the Worcester Classic.
I'd love to hear how the 3 Karn main went for him, that is a pretty big commitment to that line. I think I prefer the Karn, Scion of Urza approach main, but then the SB changes too since you can't run all of those singleton hate pieces.
On the other hand, also a very streamlined utility lands manabase, 0 Zhalfirin Void and 0 Scavenger Grounds. I think I would want the 3rd Blast Zone, but maybe I am wrong.
The trade-offs are fairly straightforward with a R build.
You gain Obligator, Chandra, and some good sideboard tools (Abrade and Anger of the Gods): Eldrazi Obligator is a very good card. I've used it in an Eldrazi Wr build and it was a good attacker that could just sneak wins out with 5 mana. Arguably the mana is much easier when you are not a 3 color build.
15+ R sources is good enough for 2 main Chandra and the sideboard choices. Rugged Prairie is probably worth trying as a 1-of to make RR easier.
What you lose are the tech lands (no Mutavault, no Blinkmoth, 1 GQ, 1 Scavenger Grounds) and Mono-color mana reliability.
I always like Anger of the Gods against the go-wide decks (Humans, Spirits, Goblins, Merfolk) all of which are oddly enough Tribal too, and also Creature Combo.
Aside from those two cards, however, I think R is pretty thin. I don't like Blood Moon, though I don't know how else they beat Tron decks, or Shatterstorm (With Abrade, do we need it for the Whir decks?), but that might be what they are forced into.
Another point, I think Warping Wail is potentially decent right now, and it is also an answer to Urza.
Going to test this list next couple of days and take it out to a small tournament this sunday to see how it goes.
Anyone got a guide with matchups for red eldrazi?? I know the primer on Modern nexus, but on the red list i don't know if there is one floating around?
I've tested R version for some time and didn't like it. Obligator is a good threat, but being unable to cast it off 2 temples (paying for it's ability from temple mana) is an important downside, as with London mulligan we are much more likely to mulligan into 2 temple hand. Then, losing manlands is a very important downside - they effectively give you the option to sneakily add additional 1 or 2 power to the board every turn for zero mana.
With London mulligan this deck is a secret beast. My record for the last leagues / tournaments is 37-3-5. some remarkable wins were: beating Mardu Pyro on the draw with a mulligan to 4, getting thoughtseized 2 times on the first two turns and beating Burn with a mulliagan to 3(!) on the draw as well. Most of the people who play it don't understand how to play it (i've yet to lose a mirror match), that's why it is not putting results, which is great.
I'm convinced that Karn TCG does not belong to this deck. With a london mulligan this is a deck to put 4/4 with disruption or 5/5 on turn 2, not the deck to get to 6 mana and install a lattice lock.
@ Jurk: The red version plays almost exactly the same as pure colorless. The only difference is sideboarding with Obligator vs Matter Reshaper. Obligator gets to stay in for un-interactive decks since the haste clock is relevant but comes out in match-ups where one-toughness is a liability such as Jund with Wrenn and Six or any deck that you think will play Plague Engineer.
I think that both versions are about the same in terms of power level. I've won games with Abrade and Anger of the Gods that I would never have won otherwise but I've also won games with Manlands and Zhalfrin Void scrys that I certainly would have lost without them.
I don't like Warping Wail, but it is better than it's ever been I guess. I'm going to play Mystic Forge in my flex slot the next time I play Colorless.
Still agree that Karn is crap. It doesn't fit the deck's plan at all.
Right now I'm on a version of Red with three maindeck Seasoned Pyromancers. Its felt great so far. There are a pair of IQs in my area this weekend so I think I'm going to go to them and give the deck a real test.
I would never play All is Dust or Endbringer in the sideboard. This deck isn't Eldrazi Tron so getting to 6+ mana is not easy even with Temples. Neither one of those fills a niche that isn't better served by another card.
I like a 3-2 split of Leyline and Relic for graveyard hate. London + Powder means you should still be able to get Leyline easily with 3. Relic is very important for grinding out slow decks with Eternal Scourge and I would never play less than two. Dont worry about nonbo with Chalice as you are siding it out in most matchups where Relic comes in.
I ended up going to two IQ's that were in my area and I decided to put a tournament report together. Unfortunately, I started 4-1 in both tournaments but then ended up losing all three of my matches that I could have got Top 8 with.
IQ #1 – 68 players, 7 rounds, final record 4-3 for 17th place (right outside the money RIP)
Round 1 – Humans – Win (2-0)
Game 1: I get super lucky by screwing him over with a turn 1 Chalice on the play. He has no Cavern of Souls but he stalls for a long time with Reflector Mage. I amass an army with Seasoned Pyromancers, almost die to fliers, but he ends up doing 10 damage to himself with Horizon lands and I eventually rip an Obligator to close it out.
Game 2: I use Gemstone Caverns to bolt his turn 1 play and follow it up with an Anger of the Gods to close out the game.
Round 2- Burn – Win (2-0)
Both matches I Chalice him. Not much else to say.
Round 3 – Titanshift – Win (2-0)
Game 1: He kills my Mimic with Wrenn and Six, but I dump 4 power on the board with Seasoned Pyomacer, take his Sakura Tribe Elder with TKS and finish him off the turn before he was going to combo.
Game 2: I use Gemstone to play a turn 1 Obligator. He kills it but I'm able to rip more Mimics + haste creatures to kill him the turn before he combos again. Obligator really shined in this match.
Round 4 – G Tron – Lose (1-2)
Game 1: He assembles Tron through 2 Ghost Quarters and a Chalice on one. Tron doing tron things.
Game 2: He keeps a bad hand and I punish him with TKS and topdeck a timely Ghost Quarter.
Game 3: He mulls to 5 and I almost get it with a Ghost Quarter but I just cant keep him off Tron and he uses Karn to stop my Smasher with Ensnaring Bridge. I would have won if I was on the play or ripped an Abrade. Oh well.
Round 5 – UW Control – Win (2-0)
Game 1: I have three TKS for which he has three Paths. I get him to 3 but he rips a Wrath on the turn he needed it and locks me with Jace.
Game 2: We both mull to 5 but I have a Seasoned Pyromancer and Chandra to refuel with and he is also forced to Path me which ramps me into Reality Smasher.
Game 3: I'm able to play a turn one Obligator with Gemstone Caverns which keeps him off kilter the whole game since he was on a slow Planeswalker plan.
Round 6 – Eldrazi Tron – Lose (0-2)
Game 1: I have a hand that is astonishingly good against a deck that cares about Chalice on one. He does not and I lose despite him mulling to 5. But I got to discard two Serum Powders to Seasoned Pyromancer so that was cool.
Game 2: I get stomped. This is a tough match-up
Round 7 – Eldrazi Tron – Lose (1-2)
At this point I'm pretty tilted that I got paired against two of the three people on E – Tron in the tourney.
Game 1: I get stomped
Game 2: She keeps and bad hand and gets punished by TKS.
Game 3: I think I got lucky when she mulls to five but she's able to grab an Ensaring Bridge with Karn before I can kill her. I have a one turn window to draw TKS or Abrade but don't. She rips another Karn and locks me.
IQ #2 – 39 Players – 6 rounds, final record 4-2 for 9th place (double RIP)
Round 1 – UR Phoenix – Win (2-0)
Game 1: He keeps and one lander + cantrips and gets completely wrecked by my Turn 1 Chalice on the play.
Game 2: He keeps and slow Aria of Flame hand that also gets punished by Chalice.
Round 2 – Tron – Lose (1-2)
Game 1: A close game where I rip Ghost Quarter + Chalice to break up + slow Tron but he O-stones the board the hard way. Luckily I rip a Smasher for the win.
Game 2: With both mull to 5 and I dont have enough resource to stop him from Tron-ing.
Game 3: I get Tron-ed real good.
Round 3 – UW Control – Win (2-0)
Game 1: For some reason he keeps a triple Field of Ruin hand that is full of counterspells. He gets wrecked.
Game 2: I draw all four of my Scourges and he is forced to waste time Path-ing and Oust-ing them. Eventually they beat him down. He also wiffs twice with Narset.
Round 4 – UR Phoenix - Win (2-0)
Game 1 : Similar to my first match against Phoenix, he keeps a one lander and gets wrecked by Chalice on one.
Game 2: In more deja-vu, this opponent also keeps a slow Aria hand. He almost gets me with it, but I rip a Chalice plus having a low pain manabase saves my bacon and I'm able to kill him quick with Smasher + Mimic.
Round 5 – Dredge Win - (2-1)
Game 1: I cant find a decent hand despite two Powders and mulling to 5. He has a mediocre start but I cant do anything to stop him. If I had Chalice on one turn one I probably could have stole it.
Game 2: I have Relic and Anger of the Gods to slow him down but I then I flood out. I get lucky when he misplays and doesn't double block my Smasher which takes him to two and I kill him with Ramunap Ruins.
Game 3: I keep a hand of Leyline, Relic, and Anger of the Gods. I also draw Chalice and he's effectively locked out of the game.
Round 6 – UW Control – Lose (1-2)
In yet another unfortunate turn for me, I get paired down against a local player who has a tie so we have to play it out. He knows how to play against me much better than other UW players.
Game 1: I have a very aggressive Mimic + Obligator draw and he just spins his wheels while I beat him down.
Game 2: A very long and hard fought game. He stabilizes with Timely Reinforcements, traps two of my Smashers under a Detention Sphere, and follows up with Baneslayer which I dont have an answer to since I used both my Dismembers to kill tokens to push through damage. I make a bad misplay by playing a creature into a counter that I knew he had instead of ticking up Blastzone to free my Smashers a turn earlier. He also misplays by attacking with Baneslayer the turn before I release the Smashers but he has a Fact or Fiction that gets him Snap into Path to save him from his mistake. I do have another turn to draw Obligator to kill him with his own Baneslayer but I'm not lucky this time.
Game 3: I keep a double Temple hand but don't draw TKS or Smasher and he has Ceremonious Rejection, Snap, and Timely Reinforcements anyways.
Closing Thoughts
I thought the deck performed quite well and is certainly able to go toe-to-toe with the top meta decks. I was impressed with all the red cards and playing a lot of basics helped in my UW control matches. Obligator being a fast-hasty clock won me multiple games I otherwise would have lost (I think I only stole a creature with it twice). The London Mulligan really helps Tron decks so I think another Damping Sphere could be a good idea. Overall, I would recommend this version of the deck over Colorless if you have a lot of Humans, Dredge, and UW in your meata. The red cards were clutch against them and having Abrades for all the Ensaring Bridges running around is also nice.
R1: vs UW-control 2-1
G1(play) chalice on 1 en double TKS into smasher was enough.
G2(draw) My turn1 chalice got countered and opponent had enough removal for my threats and became topdeck modus for me. so i scooped.
G3(play) T1 chalice again into t2 mimic, t3 TKS t4 smasher, with removal up for his snapie to kill him.
R2: vs UR-Phoenix. 2-0
G1(play) T1 chalice, T2 mimic, t3 TKS, t4 TKS t5 smasher
G2(draw) opening with leyline and t1 chalice. had enough time to kill him fast.
R3: vs Humans 2-1
G1(play)opponent kept a one land hand with hierarch wich i killed on the spot it came onto the battlefield. her never drew second land.
G2(draw) got wrecked really fast
G3(play)Long grindy game. Torpor orb won me the game. had enough removal for his mantis riders. Big boardstate. I kept swinging with my blinkmoth and killed him.
R3: ID
R4: ID
Top8: vs Humans (same player) 0-2
G1(play): powdered/mulligan to 4 cards and kept a bad hand. Game was over really fast.
G2(play): Mulled a couple of times to find removal/threat hands to a 4 card hand again and reflector mages won him the game.
Humans player won the tournament in the end.
List felt pretty solid. Humans is nog a great matchup imo.
Has anyone else felt that Serum Powder is no longer needed with the new London Mulligan rule? I played this deck heavily before the LM rule change and Powder was one of the better cards in the deck. I played in a Modern MCQ in Denver this past weekend and honestly Powder did nothing for me. Am I crazy?
This weekend i went to a MCQ in Germany. Both Saturday and Sunday events.
Saturday (156 players) i played Thalia Stompy and went 0-4 drop. It was terrible.
Sunday (111 players) i played colorless eldrazi and went 5-2.
I try to make a writeup from Sunday event.
R1 vs Humans 1-2
G1: (play) T1 Chalice, opponent plays cavern into hierarch. Later in the game opponent has double meddling mage on TKS and Scourge. He knew my hand through Kitesail.
G2: was a fast one for me. Double temple with TKS and smasher in hand. Drew second smasher.
G3: Had a turn 2 smasher out but opponent but Plague engineer in and copies my smasher and won with through topdeck mantis rider.
R2 vs Infect 2-0
Were 2 fast games for me. Killing his only dudes each game and TKS his hand taking out his remaining dudes was enough whith Mimic, TKS and smashers.
R3 vs Red prison 2-0
I saw this guy playing the round before and saw he was on red prison so i knew what i was facing.
G1: (play) Took 1 mulligan and kept fast hand. Put chalice to bottom. T1 mimic into T2 Reshaper. T3 Scourge. T3 Opponent plays ritual into Karn Gc getting ensnaring bridge from sideobard. T4 i take bridge with TKS. T5 smasher oppo scoops.
G2: Mulliganed 2 times and powdered 2 times. Kept hand with wastes and had 2 scourge in exile.
I don’t rembember how it went but opponent had blood moon out and rabblemaster but my eldrazi’s were to big and kept on atticking him. No chance for him there.
R4 vs Hogaak 0-2
G1 (draw): Opponent had his gaak and bridgvines T2 so scoop for me.
G2 (play): Powdered and mulliganed to leyline but got wrecked by force of vigor and had no chance.
Top 8 was no longer possible so let’s go for top32 prices.
R5 vs UR Phoenix 2-0
G1 (play): T1 chalice into enough dudes to kill him in a few turns.
G2 (draw): Leyline into T1 chalice was enough.
R6 vs Red/black prison/superfriends kind of deck 2-1
I also saw this guy playing and saw brigde and moon in play so ik knew it was prison. (not BR at the time)
G1 (play):1 mulligan and 2 powder with 2 scourges in exile. I didn’t keep a hand with chalice. Kept hand with 1 temple. T1 mimic, T2 scourge T4 TkS or smasher was enough.
G2 (draw): got prisoned and he had chandra torch emblem out and i didn’t had wastes.
G3 (play): Kept hand with temple and wastes and had 1 scourge exile after first powder. Had T2 TkS and took is dreadbore from hand in stead of blood moon. Wich was enough. Hey didn’t drew anyting troublesome in the turns after.
R7 vs Hoogaak 2-1
G1 (play): This was a long game with me trading a lot of creatures vs his Gaak and other stuff.
Made a big mistake and i don’t know why but i put blast zone on 3???? Somewhere in the game. Wich cost me the game.
G2 (play): Powdered and mulliganed to double leyline and had fast hand with TKs and double smasher.
G3 (draw): opponent kept a 1 land hand that didn’t had answers to leyline.
I started with leyline in play and started with temple. Opponent got second land in T4 or so and only had 2 cravecrawlers out. I kept attacking with double scourge and 1 matter reshaper.
Opponent plays loleth trol passes turn.
I played smasher and attacked with evertying and i had mana open for dismember. Opponent blocks smasher with troll and discards his 4 creatures he hand in hand to troll. I dismember troll and he gives hand shake.
I felt very happy by beating Hogaak but opponent kept a terrible hand imo so that was good for me.
Finished 18th place out of 111.
Colorless Eldrazi feels way better then Thalia stompy did this weekend. Somehow thalia stompy always plays against me.
I haven't played this deck in a awhile and I actually think it is in a great spot right now but out of curiosity, would once upon time make this deck even more consistent? Finding Eldrazi temples, thought-knot or any necessary creature?

I personally think that Once is great in Eldrazi decks, but you need to be playing green to run it. That also opens up Stirrings which gives you enough consistency that you no longer need Powder. In other words, Colorless will never play Once. I do think the way to go right now is to shift to Gx. Check out my article on the subject for more info:
the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.

I just wanted to say I played your GR Eldrazi list last night and went 2-1 with it. I adjusted the sideboard for my meta and swapped our Birds of paradise with Gilder Goose since I don't have any Birds.
I will say Wren and Six was filthy with the cycle land and I may tinker with the land base a little. I though there were too many fetch lands for the deck and the magnus of the moon is a nice touch. I was able to play magnus of the moon after a summoners pact and they didn't have enough green mana.
2-0: Amulent TItan
2-0: Mono green Infect
0-2: UW control, I misplay game 1 and game 2 he had me with celestial colonade. Both games were close though.
Colorless Eldrazi is still alive.
Yesterday I won third local tournament in a row. My local meta is full of Burn, Mono Red Prowess, GDS and Jund. Single Storm, Humans, Whirza and Mardu also appear. Tron and Amulet have not been present for months.
I play my deck almost two years, but yesterday I won against GDS, for the first time, from mulligan to 2!!! I kept Temple and Void, whereas only one Scourge was in exile. Thoughtseize found nothing to discard in my hand. Next, I drew Chalice, land and TKS. Amazing.

With the London Mulligan Rule i think the Powder Eldrazi decks seem very well in this meta.
I have the option to build colorless and the red version of the deck.
I don't own mycosinth lattice so eldrazi tron isn't going to be an option anytime soon.
Currently i played Thalia Stompy and made a BW Thalia Stompy deck when bridge was legal.
Now I'm wondering what are pro's and cons with colorless and red eldrazi stompy.
I like the list that Hertz posted last: https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=22368&d=351818&f=MO
Only thing is that i would make some changes to the sideboard.
For red I currently thinking about something like this: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/2097277#paper
Colorless is more consistent but Red has some powerfull answers for various matchups that colorless lacks.
I'm in between these decks.
Someone here got some thoughts and/or advice on the 2 kind of decks.
Thanks in advance

I agree with the point on losing tech lands compared to the colorless version. But I think we have more utility with playing red.
Warping Wail ] is realy good at the moment. Kills some much creatures! The list i made on goldfish was a quick Edit on MRbonner's list.
Forgot the wails. They are probs better than the 2 Shatterstorm . Changed the list now: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/2097277#paper

We mulligan aggresive and colorless has less problems with it. And i also think Karn SoU is nice grind card.
So i'm staying on colorless for now. Feels way better then Red.

Don't want to play 1 drops because they don't work well with Chalice.
Anyone got a recent sideboard document or something?

Yesterday i played a small tournament. 26 people, 5 rounds.
List: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/2100898#paper
R1: vs UW-control 2-1
G1(play) chalice on 1 en double TKS into smasher was enough.
G2(draw) My turn1 chalice got countered and opponent had enough removal for my threats and became topdeck modus for me. so i scooped.
G3(play) T1 chalice again into t2 mimic, t3 TKS t4 smasher, with removal up for his snapie to kill him.
R2: vs UR-Phoenix. 2-0
G1(play) T1 chalice, T2 mimic, t3 TKS, t4 TKS t5 smasher

Blast Zone took Humans from less than 20% to 30% or so, I think.

Decklist: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/2100898#paper

Colorless Eldrazi Stompy
Great article and I actually really like the deck ideas, I would probably lean more towards GW than the GR but what do I know.
The reason I was thinking of once upon of time in the colorless deck was to line up a necessary land or creature before you turn 1 chalice.

Amazing.
