Although it not as good as regular hexproof, having protection from Path to Exile, Dismember, Beast Within, and etc is great!! I think having 1~3 Sphinx in a deck with addition to 4 Sylvan Caryatid would provide a great improvement in delirium count and extra protection for Soulflayer.

Is having artifact type for delirium count ... really that important? I mean nobody used Sphinx of the steel wind despite its artifact type and keyword soup (and yes I recognize the protection keywords aren’t soulflyer-able) ... we already had access to better hexproof flyers (including just last set, Nightveil Predator)...
So are we really thinking of going to a weaker keyword creature than options we already rejected just because it’s an artifact despite that we’ve rejected some pretty good artifact keyword creatures in the past because we never considered artifact-ness to be so crucial.
I really don’t think the benefit outweighs the drawback here.
I'm not sure Soulflayer gains Hexproof from monocolored, but I'd need to check with a high ranking judge since it's a new keyword and a unique scenario. My gut tells me it doesn't gain any kind of Hexproof at all.

Always wear protection kids, sleeve up your deck.
LEGACY: Soldier Stompy WW // Blue Stompy UU // Fit Variants BGRW // Sol Land Brews BGRUWC MODERN: Pure Pili-ness GU // Red Devotion RR // Green Devotion Variants GRWUG // U/G Emerge CGU // Lots and Lots of Brews BGRUWC
When the discussion was had on Knight of Malice / Grace, the concensus was that it worked to grant that specific flavour of hexproof, just like Cairn Wanderer can pick up each individual flavour of landwalk or protection.
@thatmarkguy
I get what you mean, I might have been a bit overhyped about this new Sphinx but hear me out.
There are many reasons why Soulflayer would lose in a match, some of the primary reasons I’ve noticed is because Soulflayer lacked protection, and/or we failed to attain delirium for Traverse. Although it true that Sphinx doesn’t protect Soulflayer like a regular hexproof, but it the only card I can think of that can single-handedly fill those two essential roles in this deck. I hope this made sense? I might end up hating this card after I start playing it, but as for now I am in a favor of it.
@natesroom
Reason why I prefer hasty creatures over Chromanticore is because delving Chromanticore doesn’t provide a clock. It a bit exaggerating but for instance, if my opponent was at 1 life and I needed to win this turn, the most important ability I want in my graveyard (or hand) is haste. Combination of haste and double strike provided by Samut is essential against any deck, not to mention it can be cast against a grindy opponent. Hazoret also has multiple roles similar to Samut. In comparison, the only opponent Chromanticore shine against is aggro deck. Although it does provide enchantment for delirium and lifelink for Soulflayer, it not a combination I would prioritize over other essentials.
Sure, I might lose a game against burn because I didn’t play Chromanticore, but it doesn’t matter if I am playing against control, combo or midrange for rest of the matches (at least this logic applies to me whenever I play online). I’m not saying lifelink isn’t important, I just don’t think having Chromanticore in addition to 4 Chancellor of the Dross is necessary.
CB fills the role as discard outlet and a means for protecting Soulflayer from removal and counter spell. It a good spell against creature decks, especially the ones with Collected Company, and burn deck.
This is really a Hollow One deck, but the Soulflayer + Chancellor of the Dross idea works surprisingly well, especially if you get the free 6 point swing, I also rather like Adorned Pouncer even if its etarnalize cost is 1 too much.
I tried a Hollow 1 version, the deck did not feel like it had enough keywords to make Flayer good. Also the haste guys are ones you do not want to delve away. The deck is in conflict with it's synergy. It becomes a weaker version of both decks. Still a strong and powerful deck but hindered by its self.
Also the keywords I find I want the most are "lifelink, Haste, Hexproof" the others are all bonuses (great bonuses).
I think the biggest issue this deck and many others face is main-deck Rest in Peace or Leyline of the Void and those are realistic options simply because of the number of graveyard decks. I have Rest in Peace in a graveyard deck, I'll take Soulflayer and Adorned Pouncer out game 2 for Vexing Devil and Lightning Helix, pretty much swapping out 10 cards every other game due to the nature of the meta is a bit unusual...
Honestly this deck is fun, but I half suspect Burning Inquiry or Goblin Lore eats a ban, since the random clause is barely a disadvantage thanks to the shear number of things players want in their graveyards. I've had 1 magic christmas land of getting the free Helix from Chancellor binning it and Pouncer then casting Soulflayer as a double strike, flying, lifelink turn 2, and my opponent didn't have relevant removal. I've had a couple of 2x Hollow One on turn 2 with a charged up Flameblade Adept. Those moments feel great, but they ain't exactly fair Magic.
Also the keywords I find I want the most are "lifelink, Haste, Hexproof" the others are all bonuses (great bonuses).
I'm not sure on Hexproof, though that might be down to style of play. I'd rate Double Strike higher, that being said I nearly included a Xathrid Slyblade and the first version of this deck had Spark Trooper rather than Chancellor of the Dross... The other Delve options would be Gurmag Angler, Tasigur, the Golden Fang and Tombstalker, they all die to Dismember and Path to Exile, but they are all also out of Lightning Bolt range. I'm not sure any of them are better than Soulflayer, the real frustration with Soulflayer in this deck is that it can't gain Menace. Even then Soulflayer as just flying, lifelink 4/4 is marginally preferable to a keyword free 5/5 Angler...
When I first saw Bedlam Reveller I instantly wanted to pair it with Soulflayer, but quickly realised that grave hate leaves you with 8 dead cards, which are your only finishers and there is no chance of hard casting them. You also have no answers since red and black can't do anything about enchantments, which means you then need white or green. A similar thought process is why I just can't bring myself to use Zetalpa, Primal Dawn or Drogskol Reaver, they are dead cards, Chancellor of the Dross mostly is too, but that odd upside makes it less feel bad.
We have a Soulflayer room at our Metacall discord. It's not super lively but it'd be awesome to get some discussion going in there. We'd like to host a chat room for any deck of interest so feel free to request it in lobby or PM. https://discord.gg/ycRQhGh
Congrats on the late December 5-0 Yuseimax! Keeping the dream alive.
I recently made a discord server dedicated to discussing about Modern Soulflayer.
I'll still be posting here, but I'll be able to respond a lot faster on discord and it should be more organized.
A few weeks ago I've player Soulflayer on a small modern tournament and i went 4-0 (against 2 GDS, 1 UW control, 1 Jeskai control).
It was pretty much the same deck, except for 4x Drogskol Reaver, 19 lands.
But I was wondering another thing: is it wise to play only 3 basic lands? I've seen a lot of PTE, Fields of ruin, Settles...one or two times I was left with no lands in library to pick up...
I think 3 is our limit, playing more then 3 basics have their risk too.. like getting color screwed.
Thanx!
I'm playing 4 right now,and so far didn't had issues with color screw. But it's been only a few times I've played it and the time will tell…
This sunday I'm going to a Super Modern Tournament (aprox 30 people - that's a huge tournament for us ) and I'll post my result here.
1st round:
Some kind of agro deck (possibly humans). He put his whole hand in play on turn1 . Land, simian spirit guide, Burning -Tree emisary, another one, some 2/2 for 1G who gives him GG mana, then a deathtouch for G and Rancor on one of them...and that was pretty much for game1. Game2 and 3 I had early soulflyers with hexproof and indestructible and he couldn't deal with it. In fact I believe he didn't even know what he was facing and didn't had an answer for that. 2-1 for me and 1-0 overall.
2nd round:
This guy killed me turn3 last time we played, I was playing Goryo's vengeance and Through the breach with Emakul and Grisselbrand. Devoted druid and Vizier of Remedies for a huge Ballista and gg.
This time I killed him very fast on game1. Game2 I made a big mistake: he destroyed my Blood crypt with Field of ruin and I took a swamp instead of a basic mountain and I didn't had a red mana source for looting and a Lightning Axe, and he won. Game3 again a early mighty Soulflayer, he had a hand he should mulligan but he decide to keep, and I won very easy. 2-1 for me and 2-0 overall.
3rd round:
8-rack.
I thought this will be an easy matchup, since he is helping me discard cards. And it would be if he didn't had an Ensnaring Bridge, for which I have no answer in maindeck, so i conceded. Game2 I had a no-land hand, mulligan to six with 1 land, but a decent hand, and I decided to play. Scry, no land, bottom. After that i had a land and passed with 2 fetchlands in play. He played smallpox, in response i fetched for 2 shocklands and pained myself for 6 to play a Grisly Salvage, and no land in those 5 cards! After that 2 more draws with no land, then I got a land, played Soulflayer with hexproof, but without the Zetalpa, and he got 1 card in hand - Bontu's Last Reckoning. And that was it for round 3...0-2 and 2-1 overall.
4th round:
Skred Red
I Really didn't know what to expect...I saw snow covered mountains, his Blood Moon wasn't that bad cause I had a forest and a swamp in hand and 2 Traverses. 1 went to find a second swamp, and after a Grisly salvage the second Traverse found a Soulflayer with all abilities and that was 1-0. Game2 he played 2 Relics on turn1 and 2. That slowed me down a lot, he put a Koth in play. I had a Maelstorm pulse and decided to wait 1 more round because I was on 11 life, and I passed the turn...he put 2 bolts in my head, and on his turn Koth for -5, and the mountains killed me. Game3 an early Blood Moon slowed me down again, but I had a backup plan: hardcasting Samut!! With a Caryatid in play he came in play soon and the opponent didn't had an answer for it and in 4 turns of double strikes i went to 2-1, and 3-1 overall.
5th round:
Hardened Scales
I've heard so much about it,but never played against it. Game1: easy win for me...a fat Soulflyer with pretty much all that he can get and we went to game2. Game 2 he had a better opening. 2 Ballistas and 2 Hangarback Walkers, I had some blockers, but that was to agresive, and we went to game 3. Another easy win for me, a hexproof flying Soulflayer with double strike and lifelinf, he blocked 2 times with the nexus but that was it. 2-1 and 4-1 overall
Inthe finals the guy with the 8-rack i lost to played against a Mardu pyromancer and the 8-rack lost. Otherwise I would be in 2nd playe because the Mardu player had a draw earlier that day, but I'm happy with the 3rd palce.
I must say I enjoy this deck a lot!!! I'm having a lot of fun!!
The match up was
R1 Boros Burn 2-1
R2 Izzet Phoenix 0-2
R3 Boros Burn 2-0
R4 Izzet Phoenix 2-0
R5 Affinity 2-1
R6 Ad Nauseam 2-1
R7 Ad Nauseam 2-0
R8 UW Control 0-2
R9 Affinity 1-2
The biggest change in the deck was the number of land. I noticed that increasing the number of land will help me conserve Traverse the Ulvenwald until I search for Soulflayer instead of using it early game to search for the second land.
Overall I think this deck has the best balance between speed and consistency compared to my past decks.
I am considering to play a few Drogskol Reaver in the mainboard because everyone plays Surgical Extraction and likes to target Zetalpa and Samut.

yuseimax, can you explain why you use certain cards?
Collective brutality, Samut and Hazoret?
im guessing Samut for the keywords?
