It is basically a collection of some ideas I want to test out:
#After seeing Bloodghast (I prefer this to Flamewake) in the deck I wanted to pair it with Prized Amalgam (over Lingering Souls in some other lists) to have something to do when I don't find Soulflayer and present threats which don't cost me mana (like Souls or Flamewake). Amalgam also works better for feeding Lotleth Troll.
#Vault Skirge in the (pseudo) 1-mana slot over things like Bomat Courier/Fanatical Firebrand as I found that I don't have any lifelink creatures and having extra flying kewords is good too, I don't care much for haste.
# 2x Samut + S.Mauler over Drogskol Reaver to have castable creatures and also extra hexproof keywords. Mauler over Tyrant mainly because of the "morph" option and also costing 5-mana to turn it face up over 6-mana to hardcast Tyrant can also be relevant.
Another option can be Thrun, the Last Troll but it doesn't have trample so it isn't as effective as a standalone threat.
Regarding the manabase the deck might want an Urborg or maybe another shockland instead of one of the fastlands.
@yuseimax . Congrats on your 5-0. I was play testing with a few friends against all tiers of decks and I found that there were a lot of enchantments and artifacts that were a problem game 1 when we didn't have an answer. If we are playing the traverse package do you think it would be beneficial to find some sort of creature with a shatter effect that also has a keyword or maybe using more Seals in the board?

I usually don't face any problem with enchantment on game 1, but I can see a benefit in running a creature that can destroy artifact. Maybe Reclamation Sage? I don't know any creature with a keyword and shatter effect though.
edit: I guess there is Acidic Slime, and it can also destroy a land.
What use is Reclamation Sage to us? We won't win because of a 2/1 creature on the battlefield. We'd rather it be in the graveyard. I don't think we're ever hardcasting a 5-drop like Acidic Slime. Sideboard Ingot Chewer for artifact removal and Wispmare for enchantment removal, tutorable by Traverse the Ulvenwald, gets us what we need (cheap removal), and puts the card in the graveyard where it's more use to us than a pipsqueak on the battlefield, even if it has no keywords to feed our flayer.
It a bit random but I remembered Travis Woo used to run storage lands in his sideboard for some of his decks. I was wondering if any of them are worth playing like Calciform Pools since it would allow us to cast Drogskol Reaver and Zetalpa, Primal Dawn a bit easier. It also a good card to provide 5 color for Chromanticore if we are playing jund Soulflayer.

Those are good tutor targets, I haven't seen the Wispmare before. I'm also building in the direction of Traverse, it's such a good card and sometimes I think we need Soulflayer 5-8, or sideboard bullets.
Bomat Courier and Vault Skirge are the usual 1 drop artifact creatures for Delirium. I am taking a page out of the Death Shadow lists and trying Mishra's Baubles. At the end of the day we are a combo deck and Bauble is known for making 56 card decks. The pseudo-scry with fetchlands can also be powerful.
I'm still getting the deck together, hence a lot of the 1-ofs. I think 2 CMC plays are good if we end up casting a T2 Caryatid, although most the time I think that card needs to get pitched for the Soulflayer gameplan. If that looks better, I think Drogskol Reaver and maybe even Unburial Rites could be some cool tech. Grim Flayer can be a house though, especially in Delirium built shells.
On a side note, I made a Discord channel for this deck on our Metacall server. I don't want to pull any conversation away from the thread, Discord is usually better for small talk and ongoing community. Come by to check it out, we're trying to get channels up for most decks and general topics.

Nice deck! Mishra's Bauble is really good at finding Soulflayer and activating delirium. I'm not sure how strong Grim Flayer is since we don't run too many creature removal in the mainboard.

Hey guys, just putting together the deck myself and found the thread.
Does anyone think Tainted Strike or Stonewood Invocation might be good? I was thinking the potential to win the turn or turn after the Soulflayer hits the board is too strong to ignore.
Some early builds in this thread tried Tainted Strike, and it may be worth some consideration again now that we run so much more Double Strike and haste than we did ( a lot of early builds in this domain were heavy on Chromanticore - no haste no Double Strike and no hexproof). My guess is that it would be a tweak you’d make for wow factor fun at the kitchen table (remember that time when...?) rather than for tournament grade consistency.
Right now, I am running a copy of your 5-0 list and it has been very consistent. I think LOTV would help with getting delirium and adding another form of attack and control. I was thinking maybe 1-2 copies would be good to start with, but I wonder if there is a way to fit 4.
Here is a deck I've been testing lately. It focuses on winning by one shot with Zetalpa, Primal Dawn or Soulflayer with Tainted Strike. Since there is no hexproof creature for Soulfayer, Liliana of the Veil is important to get rid of opponent's removal spells. This deck is great against Soulflayer mirror match because even if opponent's Soulflayer has indestructible, Zetalpa or Souflayer with infect can take down that flayer. It probably not competitive but it was fun playing.
Just wanted to let people know I played Soulflayer the last three FNMs, just following the successful decks reported in this thread. My record at a competitive LGS: 1-3, 3-1, & 3-1. Hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, and vigilance on a creature is a wonderful feeling! I will put the deck down for now, since there are so many kinds of other decks to play. But I will keep my eye on this thread - I really appreciate the research and testing - and play Soulflayer every two months or so, especially when some innovations to the deck, or changes in the metagame, occur.
Cairn Wanderer and Concerted Effort were able to extrapolate and apply all the different flavors of protection and landwalk; I don't see why this wouldn't encompass specific flavors of hexproof.
Hey all. new to this thread, so sorry I don't have that much input as i do questions.
I used to play Chromantiflayer in Standard to great success. Just playing local Game days and FNMs was pretty fun. I tried to port the deck to modern for a while which was admittedly fun but eventually invested into more competitive tiered strategies.
As the modern card pool has gotten bigger, I think this deck has also gotten tons of new tools from Collective Brutality to Zetalpa.
I see a lot of good lists out there, but was curious people think to be objectively the best list, no budget necessary.
Is the Jund shell with Lotleth, Looting and Salvage consistent enough? Are you putting all your eggs into one basket? Is a more tempo orientated Grixis shell better with the Hexproof Cycler, K-Commands, Liliana's, and stubborn denials better?
Hi all! I'm new to this archetype, but it looks really fun. I like where everything seems to be going. I browsed several pages, but saw that everyone seems to be leaning towards loot fatties and eat those. I wanted to play lower to the ground and more quickly. I don't want to loose to graveyard hate and want random top decks to be relevant at most parts of the game. I took a lot of inspiration from the HollowOne deck when designing this, which is probably obvious. Have any of you tried something similar to this recently?
I've actually been testing it a fair amount with a buddy on cockatrice already (and hopefully I'll have my missing cards in before fnm next week). So far it is preforming pretty well. The worst match up with my build is Tron, it is basically unbeatable. Blood Moon also kills the deck quite well if you don't see it coming. On the other hand, I feel fairly strong vs most other decks. Everything having haste is super relevant vs most decks and the deck can definitely survive graveyard hate if they try to go that route. I'm basically pretending that Soulflayer is an upgraded version of Vengevine #5-8. If they path one, who cares, there are 7 more in the deck.

Yaw, a Soulflayer list made the top 8 of a modern event.
Which of you is Hal Brady haha

Not me! I'm glad someone was inspired to use Soulflayer in real event!
Are you planning to play 4 or just a few? I used to play lili when I ran Birds of Paradise in my mainboard. I would probably cut Ghor-Clan Rampager or Chromanticore.
