White seems to have the best sideboard hate available so I was thinking of running the deck as Mono B but with lands that allow bringing in and playing white sideboard hate (Marsh Flats & Godless Shrine for example).
Doing this would dilute some of our B devotion, but against certain matchups, the sideboarded card would generally give a much greater benefit.
I know that phyrexian arena adds more devotion but I usually prefer running more sign in blood. Turn three and four are usually when black's heavy hitters or game winners come out. At least if you're playing more on the Aggro side. And sitting on an arena til turn 5-6 seems like a waste.
Does anyone run Despolier of souls? Seems to be an aggressive semi recursive threat, tho I would think relentless dead does the job better.
How about Erebos Titan? It's prolly a budget replacement for pherexian obliterater, but u can't argue with the cost!
I'm trying to make a mono black aggro shell, and I'm thinking going zombies would be the best bet. Tried vampires, but they are lacking in the aggressive 1 drop slot.
What do people think about spamming 2/1 for 1? Like curve out at 3 with Gerald's messenger or Lilly and have like bloods lakes champion, Diregraf ghoul, tormented hero, touch of moonglove blitz deck?
Go for it. Throw in some Bad Moons and see how it goes.
After getting annihilated by Bring to LightScapeshift again. I think I've found the card to stop Scapeshift. Shadow of Doubt seems like the best answer after sideboarding. You'll basically have to hold mana up for it past turn 3, but it stops both of those cards (even though you should always let Bring to Light resolve and use Shadow on Scapeshift). I like Shadow of Doubt more than Sadistic Sacrament, and Memoricide, because Scapeshift and especially the Bring to Light version run counters. With Shadow you are casting it in response, and your opponent has likely tapped out thinking they have just won the game. Thoughts?
So I've been looking at building a deck similar to this but I was wondering about using Liliana of the dark realms instead of LotV. I understand LotV is the best version of Liliana out there but I don't have almost $100 to spend on one card. I'm also curious as to a possible replacement for bloodghast. Again, I understand that it is one of the best turn 2 black cards in the game but again budget is an issue. I'm trying not to spend $500+ on this deck. Is there a budget version of this deck floating around somewhere that I could check out and tweak as I see fit?

Ok, I know I was looking at budget options for this deck but I found this pretty good and pretty trolling combo. Though it's not modern legal I still see it as fun to play. So you have elvish piper in play, cast phyrexian obliterator and use piper to bring in it that betrays. Obliterator makes your opponent sacrifice permanents equal to the amount of damage done to it and it that betrays puts them into play under your control as long as they're nontoken permanents. What do you guys think? Would it work or is it better suited for a b/g commander? Or obliterator could go into a ramp deck and just be brought out with a piper and betrays could be brought out with another piper. So you have 15 power and toughness worth of creatures out for a grand total of 2 mana leaving you at least 2 more open for other plays. I.e. Creature sac options that are prominent in black or enchantment/artifact sac options from green. Obviously the rest of the deck needs some work but that would be the combo that the deck revolves around.
I've decided to try dropping Phyrexian Obliterator. It is often the first card I board out in almost every match up because it doesn't usually help me win against many decks besides non-naya burn or grixis. I've replaced the two I was playing with two Collective Brutality as they help lower my curve for Bob and give good value in a variety of situations. So far it has seemed to work well, but I'll keep testing. I would possibly like to swap Relentless Dead for Bloodghast as it gives Collective Brutality insane value, but Relentless Dead has done pretty well. It's worth considering though.
I've dropped Obliterator in favor of Kalitas. Obliterator is a huge stone wall, and great is some of the more grindy match ups. Problem is, Kalitas generates much more value, and can really dig you out of some massive holes. I'm still trying to find a good cut to find CB in, as it looks to be insane value.
Sorry I've been absent for a short while. Work and all that jazz. Nobody told be adulting would be this hard.
I rocked mono black back in the day so just built a list on MTGO, went 4-0 in league.
I am wondering if we should try and find a place for consume spirit as a mana sink, or if we are better off just adding gravecrawlers into bloodghast... any suggestions?
I finally got my first deck together (thanks Hotchil, your deck and success inspired/encouraged me) and went to a tournament yesterday. I'd never played with anyone other than my roommate before. Made top 8! Everyone was great and I got a lot of cool responses while playing the deck. Especially when obliterators and Garys landed
That's awesome to hear, Oddsprout! Mind posting your deck list? I could probably give you a few pointers on it. It's awesome that you're playing it too. I replaced so many of my cards from the original I have 2 versions, my casual and my competitive.
I've been neglecting this thread in favor of my craft beer addiction no longer! What has everyone been up too? Any new additions or subtractions? I know I just got a foil Collective Brutality I'm waiting to unleash on my play group.
Relentless Dead is every bit as good as I thought he'd be. Truly the 2 drop this deck was waiting for.
Wrench Mind is such a powerful turn 2 play vs a lot of the field, I like how it's playing so far. Turn 1 IoK/Thoughtseize, turn 2 Wrench Mind, turn 3 LoTV is back breaking.
Relentless Dead and Collective Brutality are both incredibly powerful additions to this archetype. It really feels significantly more potent than the same time last year when I was playing MBD. I'm surprised this thread is so much less active than it used to be considering the staple cards we've gained recently.
Not sure about Collective Brutality since discard isn't as high without a bloodghast recursion I'm used to, but I'll least give two copies a go. So far I'm thinking of cutting down two obliterators for a Lashwrithe and another Erebos, God of the Dead. My 4 drop do most of the heavy lifting for winning a game, but sometimes not being to cast them always on turn four is really painful sometimes. I'll have to test.

Looking at cards like:
Stony Silence
Leyline of Sanctity
Rest in Peace (can hurt us more if we're playing for recursion so probably Wheel of Sun and Moon over this)
Fracturing Gust
Suppression Field
Ghostly Prison
Celestial Purge (hits opposing Nahiri & Liliana planeswalkers and Kalitas)
Kataki, War's Wage
Burrenton Forge-Tender
All the various kind of Disenchant's like Tempest of Light (good versus bogles and Starfield of Nyx metas).
You could then also include Path to Exile.
Worth trying?
Just thoughts
