I must have miss read the spoiler. You could drop Obliterator for her, but then you are loosing a fantastic road block and beater. You you could drop a lower cmc creature for it, but then you are massively raising your curve. You would almost have to run Nyx as a 2 of or more, which would add some amount of instability to your mana base. I still am not a huge fan at 5 mana, there isn't a lot of things in modern you want to be paying that much for, and if your are you want it to be winning, not just setting you up.
However I think it could be a great card for some sort of control deck, be it MBC or some sort of Dimir deck.
Greetings all. I purchased the Underworld Herald event deck, when it first debuted. I modified it, and loved it while it still dominated the meta in standard. Recently, I've had a hankering to return to playing Mono-Black Devotion once more, this time in modern. As such, I updated my old standard legal deck to function better in modern. This is what I've come up with so far:
I'll be testing it out at modern nights this week at a pair of LGS. I'll post results here, but suggestions and critique are welcome. I believe the Pack Rats may be sub optimal, however I fell in love with them when I played them in standard, and can't bring myself to part with them presently.
Just as a side note Gray Merchant of Asphodel is not my main win condition, Demigod of Revenge is. My sideboard is kind of local meta since a lot of players play Red/White decks where I play.
How do you fair against aggro? With only four removal spells, and one of them eating 4 life, no real blockers until Obliterator, aggro looks rough for you.

I don't see where your concern is. I don't know what "real" block means.... I don't really have many problems with aggro decks. My deck isn't a traditional devotion deck. I guess you can call it a Black/Red Midrange deck with a splash of Devotion. Maybe I posted it in the wrong thread. Either way, Lightning Bolt, hand removal, Liliana of the Veil, Bile Blight, and Dismember have been more than enough to win matches with. I lost game 3 to a turn 3 Karn Liberated/ turn 4 Wurmcoil Engine in yesterdays tournament. Basically I was wondering what people's thoughts about Hero's Downfall was.
Hero's Downfall is good against Karn, instant speed planeswalker removal is great against Tron.
Your deck is ok here, your deck just looks very self damaging with Fetch+shock/Thoughtseize/Dismember and your creatures can't really block until turn four. Have you ever had an issue with Infect or Affinity pre board? I've had some nasty games before I shifted in deck to have more early game interaction. You deck reminds me of a control deck, or stax, and with that being said, have you thought about Blood Moon in the side? You can easily support it if you adjusted your mana base. Moon plus Mogis just sounds mean. You would need to play with the number a lot to get that to work, but that would be a good plan for tron. While they can, at times, wait till turn 7 to drop Karn, they would be in a bad spot against a deck like this.
Has Demigod impressed you? I've looked at him for a while, but I was never happy with the results I got from him. My decks were more combo than midrange though, running Darkmor Salvage and Burning Inquiry along side Faithless Looting, to dig and discard as hard and fast as possible. I just found that I would get killed off while I'm turning over my deck, usually dying before I ever drop a Demigod.
I'm having a little bit of a problem with aggro (before I threw the nighthawks in anyway)... would whip in the sideboard be a good idea? Without life gain of any kind sometimes things get a little too close for comfort.
I've never tried a version that runs Waste Not, just because I wouldn't have a great way to re fill the opponents hand, which I the same issue I had we I was playing around with Liliana's Caress decks. I might be decent if you ran Burning Inquiry as a four of.
I don't really know how to give advice on the Demigod decks, as I've never tried to build one. I understand the draw, but I much prefer the drain of Gary when he hits. I do feel like dropping devotion is the wrong thing, as I've won too many games I've had no business winning due to it. Maybe Shadow Alley Denizen as a one drop for the Demigod decks, that way you can get damage in no matter what?
Wow. I didn't think I was gone from this thread for that long but a bunch of people have posted some different takes on the deck. Made for some interesting reading. Demigod of Revenge certainly looks interesting but I'm with you Oops, I love Gray Merchant of Asphodel too much to drop him for it.
I really enjoy the new matchups section of the guide. I've referenced it multiple times already and I'm sure it will only get better as it gets fleshed out more.
I'm trying to create a sideboard plan for my current meta. What I'd really like is a sideboard plan that sets me up to beat my friend's decks, and hopefully that will be end up being useful against the field at large. If you can't have the perfect sideboard for everyone, you might as well give yourself the best chance against the people you play against the most! =D Fortunately, my play group tends to play pretty normal decks, so it should set me up well for events at my LGS. I regularly see Burn, Abzan, Tron, Spliter Twin (including Blood Moon in the side), 8-Rack, and mono-green Tooth and Nail (abusing things like Utopia Sprawl, Overgrowth, and Arbor Elf to power out an entwined Tooth and Nail).
Right now, I'm still working with the B/G version of the deck. Once I used Lotleth Troll for the first time I couldn't go back to mono-black. =) I'm mostly sticking with version Oops describes at the beginning of the guide. I want to understand why he likes it as much as he does before I start to tinker with it. I just traded from a few Liliana of the Veil (!!) so I'm glad to be using those but I'm not going to have any Verdant Catacombs until Battle for Zendikar (or whenever). So I'm making do with slightly janky mana.
Here is my current sideboard plan. I'd love feedback on what seems like a good idea and what doesn't.
Vs. Burn (or any aggro deck): -3 Thoughtseize, -3 Phyrexian Arena; +3 Disfigure, +3 Vampire Nighthawk. I don't want to be taking extra damage, and the card advantage of Arena doesn't seem like it will be worth it for such a short game. I really like the life gain that Nighthawk brings in this matchup and cheap removal is perfect.
Vs. Splinter Twin: ??? I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. Seems like I want more hand disruption, but I don't want to lose my creature removal either. (got to be able to answer Pestermite or Deceiver Exarch) I could maybe imagine dropping two Birds of Paradise for the extra Thoughtseize, and Inquisition of Kozilek and playing for a longer game? I'm not sure.
Vs. Mono-green Tooth and Nail: -2 Swamp, -2 Abrupt Decay; +2 Ghost Quarter, +1 Thoughtseize, +1 Inquisition of Kozilek: Decay is decent in this matchup as there are plenty of mana dorks and the land enchantments to target. But I really want to bring in some extra hand disruption to get ride of all the Tooth and Nails as that is the backbone of the deck. This was another hard one to figure out. (FYI, if it makes a difference, his deck is a budget version that entwines Tooth and Nail for Xenagos, God of Revels, and Gisela, Blade of Goldnight to attack for 20 damage in the air)
Would love some advice from anyone on my sideboard selections as well as my sideboard plan verses those decks. Thanks!
I really like your sideboard plans there, though I've never played a Tooth and Nail deck, that's got to be fun. Splinter Twin is a good match up, you could side out a few removal spells for some more hand disruption, but our main deck is pretty good against them. The Tron match up can be a rough one, and it's one I don't have a lot of experience with it. One guy has a RG tron deck, but he almost never runs it.
I wouldn't bother with Crypt for Azban, as with Deathmark+6 other removal spells, you shouldn't really be worrying about their creatures. I have the grave hate there for the guy that still plays storm or the dredge brews that someone always bring. I especially like your burn plans, even if Nighthawk eats a bolt, that is one less at your face. That combined with with light hand disruption, they will run out of spells and we should be able to weather the storm to pull ahead. As far as your mana base goes, it looks decent. You have a good focus on black based fetches, which is what is most important. Green fetches are needed, but not in the same quantity.
About Demigod, the more I think about him, the more I feel like the deck turns into a sort of Midrange combo. Dredge and red looting to eventually drop a Demigod and recur at least one other Demigod. I'd have to test it, but it sounds doable.
The Tooth and Nail deck is pretty cool. It's obviously not a tier one deck, but it can have some crazy explosive games. The "real" version entwines for Xenagos, God of Revels and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn rather that Gisela but my buddy's deck is still pretty cool.
I agree that Twin is a decent matchup. I'm inclined to maybe try boarding out two Abrupt Decay for the hand disruption the next couple times I play and see how I like it. But maybe the main deck is fine the way it is. The lack of Verdant Catacombs hurts the most in this matchup since I'll need to play around Blood Moon in matches two and three. I might be hurting for a Forest. Maybe I should just run 4 Bloodstained Mire and 4 Wooded Foothills instead of 4 Mire, 2 Foothills, and 2 Polluted Delta just because of Blood Moon. Any thoughts on that?
That sounds like a good split to me, I would think about going 4/3/3, that way you have more access to black fetches. I usually only need the one forest to be ok. Then I decay the Moon and get along with life! I used to have Golgari Charm in my side for twin, but I actually keep my Decays in for the Twin match up. You can't hit Splinter Twin, but you can hit the creatures they would try to use it on.
Was finally able to add Oona's Prowler and a few budget options for Liliana. I'm going to start working on the red splash, at least theory crafting so that I can better understand. If anyone has cards to suggest, I'm all ears. (No literally, my head looks like someone left the taxi cab doors open).
So, after some rather thorough and extensive play testing, I've come to realize that the Pack Rats are indeed quite useful in this deck. They provide more options than I initially realized. There's the obvious combo with Mutavault, and the added black mana helps a ton with devotion. It also provides a sac outlet for Liliana of the Veil, if I wish to edict an opponent. Speaking of Lili, holy ***** does she help. She's so multifaceted, and I don't even need her to stick. She draws attention away from my life total, is relatively cheap to cast, and does everything! Honestly, if I knew what to cut, and if I had a little over a hundred bucks to throw away, I'd grab another one to make a full play set.
I'm trying out 3 of each, the Desecration Demon and Phyrexian Obliterator. I kind of like the Obliterator, but the black intensive casting cost frightens me a little bit.

I agree with running more Lilianas, but I'm in the same boat, I don't want to cut anything from my main, as it all flows together so well. If you run 2-3 Urborgs you shouldn't have to much of an issue with Obliterators casting cost.

On mtgsalvation people don't want to discuss ideas, so I give people something else to discuss: my controversial opinions.
I agree on Persecutor over Desecration. We have plenty of ways to get rid of him, and he is hard to block. That being said, in a mono black deck running Tomb of Yawgmoth, I would nust play Obliterator. He is soooooooo good. Still trying to work on a red splash list, but I'm still working out of my home state. I have a rough list I'll tru to post soon. Thanks for the patience guys and gals.
4-0 Last night. I might be adding 1 Bitterblossom to get some chump fairies but I don't know. Have to play test/proxy this Monday. Also might be adding a Pit Fight to the main to force my opponents to battle Phyrexian Obliterator LEL
Alright, first things first, way to go Goku! How did your deck do, and what do you think it's weak points are?
I'm now back in Ohio, and will be updating the primer over the next couple of days to include red splash ideas.
After a small amount of playtesting I came up with this list. It's supper grindy, attempting to lock out the other player with blood moon locking out cards, and Thougtseize/IoK taking the rest. It's more controlling than I first thought a red deck could be, but it feels like I'm playing a stax deck.

The first match I played was against RW Burn. It was close but I managed to keep the everything under control once Obliterator hit the board. The second game I sided Lashwrithe and Phyrexian Crusader and won fairly easily. My second match however was intense with Abzan Midrange. It went to game 3 with me being able freeze the game with Obliterator and eventually dropping Gray. My third match was laughable considering the Storm player tried to go off twice on turn 3 and ended up scooping both times. The last match was against Splinter Twin and this deck probably has it's best match againt that one so I won 2-0.
This is the build I am going to run on Friday. I took Whip of Erebos out because I felt like there were always more important plays on turn 4 then that one. If you are wondering about Vampire Nocturnus, I decided to try this option because A; I am adding Gatekeeper of Malakir B; He is 5/4 when black is revealed C; He pumps Bloodghast and Gatekeeper of Malakir D; 3 Devotion for Gray and E; I can somewhat force trigger with flashback Faithless Lootings

Vs. Abzan: -2 Liliana of the Veil; +2 Deathmark. Had a hard time with this one. Lili isn't nearly as good when your opponent has Lingering Souls in their main deck. Bringing in a few more removal spells that can deal with Siege Rhino seems like a good idea. Do I want the single Tormod's Crypt here to mess up their Tarmogoyf/Lingering Souls/Scavenging Ooze? What would I drop for it?
Vs. Tron: -2 Swamp, -4 Abrupt Decay; +2 Ghost Quarter, +1 Thoughtseize, +1, Inquisition of Kozilek, +2 Vampire Hexmage. Abrupt Decay seems pretty worthless here. Land destruction, extra hand disruption, and some way to deal with Karn Liberated is my plan. I'm considering siding out 1 Swamp and 1 Mutavault for the Ghost Quarter instead.
Vs. 8-Rack: -2 Victim of Night, +1 Thoughtseize, +1 Inquisition of Kozilek: Won't need creature removal here.
4-0 Last night. I might be adding 1 Bitterblossom to get some chump fairies but I don't know. Have to play test/proxy this Monday. Also might be adding a Pit Fight to the main to force my opponents to battle Phyrexian Obliterator LEL
