I would snap register this in any event where I could lose one and still top 8.
Oddly I never played Scapeshift in an event. I imagine the matchup is so favorable, though, comparing it to Twin. Bogles is such an easy match. Merfolk is interesting, but I'm 3:0.
I never played against UWR, but I think it's equal with Jund. I usually beat the hand that is removal removal removal lands without doing anything.
I appreciate the feedback. I don't want to fight for a promo Birds of Paradise, but I still may go for the Modern Mocs and chronicle it on the site with the matchup analyses you're wanting to see.
Hi! Long time since my last tournament with this deck, but enjoyed you articles!
I would like to point a couple of things:
-From my experience, Bloom Titan has been a very easy to beat match, unless they have the God hand. Both decks are fast and uninteractive, but the turn 3 kill happens more often from the Suicide side. Thoughtseizes are hilarious against them.
-Does the Nourishing Shoal deserve his 4x spot? I would probably switch them for a couple of antiBurn cards (i.e. Phyrexian Unlife) and the other couple for Postmortem Lunge. This card is awesome in board states against Liliana or similar. The haste clause is huge.
As you said the Burn MU is very hard and I would not use 4 SB slots to change the 20-80 ratio to something like 25-75.
Those are good points. I finally beat Bloom Titan for the first time yesterday. 1-3 now. With EVERYONE playing Affinity at the moment, I'm considering this sideboard
4 Leyline of Sanctity (jund, burn)
4 Thoughtseize
4 Ancient Grudge
2 Faith's Shield (removal, burn)
1 Phyrexian Unlife
Here, the burn package is more versatile. I played an 8-man and faced Grixis Twin rd 1 (easy win), Naya Burn rd 2 (WON!) and Jund Burn (from johnnyhotsauce with Tasigur) rd 3 and lost 1-2.
I've adamantly been opposed to Thoughtseize main for a long time, but it would be pretty sweet to have Spellskite in the sideboard, and playing 4 Thoughtseize for Bolt, Growth, something?? seems like the way to do it.
Went grinding with the article deck and side yesterday. Started with 50 tickets, ended with 70 and 8 qps. No changes even though there are some good options. Still have a pretty bad infect and affinity match.
I saw that article. He had just stomped me when I was playing this, and he was playing Affinity. Apparently the deck spoke to him anyway. I'm glad he ran PTPaul's list and matsugan's list and found the latter to be favorable. It was an experiment I can't afford (Tarmogoyf).
There were a few things I would have done differently. I would take Growth out instead of Bolt vs. Bloom. Some people complained about his Temple Garden play g1. He should have fetched untapped shocklands more. There was once that he Thoughtseized before Probing, and I thought that was a waste.
I definitely would have kept that hand. He got really lucky game 2 against Bloom Titan because the Titan opponent didn't keep a remotely good hand either. I would have felt a lot better keeping that hand after winning game 1, but still, knowing that I lose a good chunk of percentage points every turn after 3, I would have run the risk and hoped for a land in the top 2. The second hand was not a keep.
I probably would've killed the goyf with Become Immense.
There were other plays that I found questionable, but I'm going to have to re-watch to find them. Maybe it was with whether or not to Bolt himself.
I'm really looking into this deck for something new and fun to play. Curious, has anyone tried swapping W for U and running Delver? It's running enough spells that it should pretty consistently flip I believe and is essentially an evasive nacatl.
This deck looks super fun but Mishra's Bauble seems pretty weak in it. People who play this deck: Do the minor synergies that this card has make it worth including?
Let's get serious about Affinity hate. The Copenhagen sideboard plan is ok but Stony Silence is awful on the draw and mediocre on the play. It's very easy to lose to Signal Pest and a couple of evasive flyers with Stony Silence out. We can't block their dudes, and they have chump blockers for days.
So we have some options...
Shattering Spree is best under Blood Moon.
Lingering Souls blocks all their guys except Etched Champion. Additionally in attrition matchups it provides Lily fodder and evasive guys to get double strike and +6/+6
Marrow Shards is a limited blowout.
Kataki War's Wage gets Galvanic Blasted but is otherwise good.
I managed to beat Lantern, Splinter Twin, Coco Elves and Burn.
I have been thinking of swapping out some stuff on paper in favor of some delve cards like Gurmag Angler and Become Immense but my local meta packs a lot of GY hate. 1 Angler and 1 Become Immense won't hurt the deck overall I think. They will provide some extra surprises.
The deck has become quite a King Maker type deck. It rolls over certain decks and can win because people see a first turn swiftspear and was expecting burn or u/r delver but you swing in for 9 damage lol.
Hi Drinkard,
How good is the RG Tron match-up? I guess stony silence is used there too, whereas something like kataki isn't very good. I'd be disappointed if I lost with stony in play, but you have more experience than me... but double-striking +6/+6 (like the lingering souls thing) will dodge chump blockers anyway, due to the trampling effect. I do agree that souls has more uses in other match-ups though.
Most affinity lists run 1 blood moon at most, so I don't think we should consider shattering spree, as we usually only have 2 red sources at most. <3 the idea of marrow shards, but it doesn't deal with ravager or ornithopter (carrying a plating), and master of etherium/etched champion make the card look a bit silly.
Grudge and thoughtseize over lynxes and bolts are fine for tron. The matchup is too easy without siding at all.
I friend had an idea of switching Kird Ape to Nivmagus Elemental (base from Fabrizio Anteri's list). It has good synergy with Mutagenic, "late game" Probe and Thoughtseize when opponent is on hellbent or we have 2 life Only problem is with exiled spells - they won't work great wih Become Immense. But maybe it is worth testing.
Pyroclasm. That's the sideboard card. Sweet with Kird Ape and Monastery Swiftspear, wipes out Affinity and Merfolk when played early (which Stony Silence has to be as well), can get Infect in a tight spot turns 2 and 3. I'm going to try it as a 3-of over Stony Silence anyway. Heck, it might even be suitable (with the Leylines) against Burn.
Went 4-1 in this afternoon's Festival prelim, losing to Levy Loam Pox and beating McWinSauce azorius tron, Temur midrange (basically a Standard-legal brew), Burn, and Bloom Titan.

he sideboarded in a lot of discard in G2 and blew up my hand by turn 2. Lilana came online and he eventually casted Death's Shadow for the beats.
G3 he didn't draw a exceptional hand and I drew a turn 3 manamorphose -> manamorphose -> temur battle rage win
exciting games!
