I opted for 2x abrades instead of my 2 angers bc anger sets us back when we down our geist and quellers (my version) though i cant imagine its too different of an outcome for you
Anger may seem too much in my deck since I already run 12 removal/burn spells but against some decks that go wide it's just necessary.
Fish, Elves, Spirits, Humans, Affinity, Dredge, Hatebears... These decks run 20-30+ creatures and spot removal is not enough. When I board in 2x Anger I board out my third Geist. My Gideons are unaffected by Anger. I usually lay back and let the opponent commit 2-3 creatures to the board before I Anger, and after that I start playing my Geists.
@stevo:
I dont have any experience with your style of deck, the more midrange approach, but I will tell you this much. Why fix it if it aint broken?
You have stated in last couple of posts, that you have pretty good results with the deck and considering the meta shifting more to burn, phoenix decks, as well as dredge and grixis shadow, with a tron deck in the mix as well sometimes you seem pretty well set up for most of those match ups.
Gravehate is very important right now, personally I would play 2 surgicals and 1 RiP but thats just my preference. You could even try 1 surgical main to make room for another card in your sideboard. Surgical is so good right now and hardly ever a dead card in the current modern metagame.
Speaking of the new modern metagame. I wanted to ask you guys about some cards and what your thoughts are regarding those cards.
The first one would be Silence. Playing this on curve, or turn 3 on upkeep of the izzet phoenix decks and flashing it back turn 4 with a proactive snapcaster could be quite good.
And the other card is Spell queller. Could izzet phoenix be the deck we want to board in queller again? It could be decent versus grixis shadow as well and in the burn match up its quite good in my experience.
I am curious what you guys think.
So yesterday is was another FNM Modern at our place! And is soo good and go and win my second FNM. I went 4-0 for the first time. I really love my deck now :). Now when i know how to play my deck and how to hold up mana and layback sometimes.
I turn the tables for my friend who played Mardu Pyro when i only have 4 life left
And the last match angainst another Elfs its was so close. If he only had one more swamp land i had lost that match. I hate that card who drain our life for how many elfs they got.
But I am so happy for my second win. Jeskai is back !!
Congrats MrWickard! That’s awesome. I love when people on here win their FNM. I haven’t done so in a little while be I haven’t played enough and didn’t go 4-0 when I did :). It is nice to live vicariously through you. This type of deck does take a lot of practice but once you get comfortable you can do really well like you said.
Stevomat- I will put together your deck and run some games with my play group and see if I can give you any pointers. I’m excited to see you dominate in London!
@ Maz: silence has been good for me, I am currently building a Mardu Y pyromancer deck around it. In the Jeski deck it felt quirky against some match-ups but I was running an Aggro version then.
Izzy phenoix is a cast trigger right? So spell queller wont catch or trip up the cast. I am I right? Rule of law
@Stevo: your deck seems sweet already.
Congrats MrWickard.
I use settle the wreckage over anger. ( I lost my anger) Also I am still having trouble with mono green stompy in the hands of a good player. Sometimes Anger is not big enough when it comes in late game.
I believe, that some draws just cant be interacted with, regarding the phoenix deck. The key would be on when to cast silence effectively, or queller. Casting either of those two cards in response to a third stell with phoenixes in the GY would be very unwise. But playing silence in the upkeep, or quelling their turn 2 or 3 manamorphose to keep them from going off on their turn with spell pierce or remand back up while presenting pressure could just be backbreaking.
@CurdBros: I'd really like to hear your feedback after a few games! And I am pretty sure you'll enjoy playing the deck
Basically I am contemplating whether I should use the Forked Bolt which is the only real flex spot I have in the deck. It could be Forked Bolt, Izzet Charm, Spell Snare or a 2nd Echoing Truth... At FNM I used Izzet Charm and it felt good and Forked Bolt doesn't have too many good targets in the current meta.
Auriok Champion in the SB could be really strong against Dredge, Shadow and Burn but is it worth a spot?
Regarding the London mulligan: I am no fan. I hate non-games after a mull to 4 or 5 but combo decks in Modern became so powerful that they can easily destroy you on turn 2 with that rule. All-In Living End is one example and a very good one. I wouldn't want to face this deck with the new mulligan rule. The new rule could be good though when it comes into force simultaneously with a Looting ban.

You should use wrath of God instead. You don't want to give mono stompy more lands. And sometimes u need block and bolt. To take away big guys even if it's hurt in our heart sometimes use more cards to get away a threat.
I remember one match against mono stompy.
I change my style and play more control. Let them get out with guys. I use my all removel and snappy to take away all the threats. And my flyers do the job

I'm sorry to hear about the tournament Stevomat. Unfortunately, that magic sometimes :(, especially in the modern format. No reason to find another hobby because there are non as awesome as magic. Even the best players in the world only have a 60% win rate over the long term. Some people wonder how the same players make the top 8's all the time, but if you look at the numbers they often only win 55%-60% if you remove the 2-3 byes they often have. In addition, they have the time and resources to both draft a lot and change decks on a whim. That's not to mention the team aspect that helps.
There are several things that change in real live cardboard magic tournaments when compared to online. Typically the average player at an event is a better player than the average player online. Also sometimes the MTGO meta is way different from what you see at events. I see a much wider range of weird decks at even FNM then I do online. This can make is especially hard to continually do well in modern only events and in modern only tournaments. Draft and Standard are much easier to meta game and gain advantages. Do you see any of these differences when you play?
I chose the crazy modern format as my favorite format and love it. However, I know that I have to live with the down times that often come in modern more so than in draft and standard. I hope the next one goes better and I bet it will.
WickedApp- I don't really have a great answer for mono green stompy. I haven't played against it much. However, I have found that going a little aggro and including a couple of coupies of Deflecting Palm works well against those styles of decks. Basically using their aggression against them. It also gets around hexproof. I would suggest giving that a try if you want to try something a little different.
Thanks for your kind words, CurdBros. You're right, Modern tournaments are always a lottery. It doesn't matter where you play them. Actually I play against a lot of tier decks at my FNMs (Shadow, Burn, Dredge, Affinity, Scapeshift, Amulet...) and I encountered several weird decks at the MCQ on MTGO. First two rounds I played against Green Devotion and a UW hardcore control deck with Timely and Elixir of Immortality main, that only ran Colonnades and JTMS as win cons and also ran (I think) 4x Temporal Mastery and 4x Time Warp. I lost against both these decks and against the UW deck it wasn't even close. Anyways, it really sucks when have a nice winning streak and then spend money to play and just keep loosing -_-
After a few losses I always think about how the deck could be made better. Yesterday I tried 2x Light Up The Stage instead of the two Sphinxes and I really start liking this card. In an aggressive deck like ours it's basically always a draw 2 cards for R and MtG cards don't get much better than that.
Has anyone else tried this card? And another question: Has anyone ever tried Secure The Wastes as a 1-of? It should be pretty good in a deck with 21 lands and cantrips because it scales very well, right? I really like that it's an Instant.
I mayby dosen't have all the answers to all you guys who play this lovely 3 colors decks :). But for one thing I like with my deck who have been good in my two last FNM modern its fast deck. And if they kill my delvers, are mantis and geist very good and snappy bolt. I have beaten some of those decks too and i can say it too it's very hard matchups.
That i like most in my deck is 8 cantrips. 4 Serum and 4 opt make it's very solid many times. Know what u are going to draw and when u need a answer to something i have sometimes find it with my cantrips.
And Light up thr stage i don't know about but i think is can be good if u sure to hit your oppents.
Secure the wastes can be good too but i don't play with it.

StevomatUWR- I think that Light up the Stage is a great card to try. People have really loved it in burn. It likely works best in a burn heavy build. I only run 4-5 main deck counter spells so it's likely to hit proactive cards. I will be trying one copy as a one of as well at some point. I also underestimated how good that card would actually be in play. I hope it works out for us.
I totally understand what you are saying. I see some really weird stuff in more tournament play. Especially if you lose round 1. My brother will he happy to hear that Green Devotion was at a tournament. That is the deck he has played forever (he runs the Mono Green Devotion thread on here). It's a very busted deck that can be hard to deal with. It can have a few hiccups we can take advantage of, but their god hands can be nearly impossible for us to beat. The tooth and nail version is a little bit eaiser for us to handle because we basically just need a counter spell or path to exile and we can avoid losing, but the more planeswalker and draw heavy versions can be a nightmare. That UW deck sounds like a nightmare matchup too. It's basically hopefully land a Geist of Saint traft or bust. I typically take what I can from these matchups and mostly forget about the results because you likely will never play them again.
Mr.Wichard- I agree. Our deck feels really well positioned right now. I have had better results on average the last two months or so than I have had in a long time. I really love this deck and can't imagine playing something else.
If you want guys test this build of jeskai deck. U want to counter and draw is always nice. And my new favoirt card in my sideboard is Spreading Seas. All the time against Mardu i side in that card. And if he see my hand and discard he take that but its not a big deal for me. For i have my other more imported cards :D.
And Tempo style is nice i think!
So free to copy or add other cards. But test flying creaturs then u gona see how the crying haha.
I hope i can give u guys a some light in the darkest room.
Interesting build, very fast and low to the ground.
Have you had any experience with merfolk mistcaller?
Also have you ever considered steel of the god head for the sideboard i think its such a great card for lists that run spell queller. In my experience its a very very good combo to slap queller on your opponents turn and then slap the steel on it.
Yo I have found that steel of the hod head on a spell queller or geist of st traft demolishes mono G stompy and other creature based decks like humans and spirits.

I added dusk//dawn MB and had settle SB
I found this week that I wished settle was MB and did not want the Dusk at all. Instant speed removal & exile is good. Merfolk and Spirits instant speed mass removal could have helped. I did cast it on spirits but it got spellquelled once and spirit pierced the next time.
I have flooed out a few times in the last month.
I will be changing the deck and going much more aggro build.
I would deff recomend 4 snapcasters and go with a more consistent spell count on your instants and sorcery. I see alot of one ofs and I just feel that harms consistency alot. Otherwise good job on that 2-0 vs Eldrazi tron. That is a match up that feels so so hard for possibly the toughest match up I have by far.

I see that many players on this thread a are using 2-3 Mantis Riders. Don't you hate spending 3 mana and then see your creature getting bolted? I can see why it's good in Humans where it can become a 4/4 and because no one has 30 Bolts to kill all Humans, but in our decks? Is everyone who's using this card happy with it?
