When Magic first started the expansion sets where around 85-100 card sets. Worked back then, I do not see why it could not work now. as long as they kept the power in check and did not print over the top cards. Reprints and needed commons/uncommons. New cards with themes of the set. Very limited print runs.
A couple of things here. It worked because it was a smaller niche game run by a company who wanted to make a great game first, and make money second. Sadly, thats not the case anymore. I have always felt that modern was wotc's cash cow, and the masters sets really solidified my opinion of this. But now with this new utter puller that wotc is developing I dont see them lightly milking this bovine. They are going to drain it to death...again.

The set would likely have to be around 200 to be a complete set that can be drafted etc. Modern masters was around 230 cards (229 to be exact) so that's likely what they will do. Battlebond was 254 cards. I assume they would want the set to be a stand alone set that can be drafted as well, but I'm not positive. If it's more of a commander product or new product they could do an 85-100 card set with the new cards as well similar to commander products. However, I think the larger set is more likely due to the fact that people will want a playset of the new cards.
The reason I say this topic is on topic for our deck is because it's likely the only way we will get a usable "alternate cost" counter spell which our deck is lacking. I try not to stay on a "side topic" too long, but it's always nice to hear what our you guys think because I "talk" to you more than other members on the forums.
youre probably right but God...I hate to be constantly negative but we all know what happened last time wotc focused on the "draft experience" on a supposed modern focused set...
But in terms of amoutn of cards, youre probably right. Its most likely gonna have 200+ cards.
Im pretty hyped, we may see counterspell which would be great.

Totally agree CCC. This could be a great set, but they have definitely showed in the past that they can make some real stinkers. I'm hoping it's more on the original modern masters side where they really take their time to make a great set. Also, counterspell would be awesome and I really think it would be ok in modern. As I have said before, I would be more hyped for Daze, but honestly I think Counterspell is much more likely because they don't like alternate cost cards in modern and I don't think that they want delver to be at the top of the meta game again, but I may be wrong.
As for my deck, I am currently trying to decide between a copy of Pteramandar or Sphinx of Foresight in my flex spot. My gut says Pteramandar would be better for my deck and I will be testing that first. I want to get a decent number of games in with each option before deciding so I won't be making a decision for a little bit. I have seen that pteramandar is making waves in legacy so it may be decent in modern. Although they are very different formats it does give an indication that the card is powerful in non-rotating formats. My only concern remains that the deck would be to heavily dependent on the graveyard so we will see. I will keep you all posted.
Unfortunately I agree with you both. WOTC is milking Modern and the new set will diminish it further. I do not think Wizards will release daze or counterspell, because they want people to buy "new" cards and support the new set. So we many see some kind of copy/hybrid that we really do not want to play but might use as a 1 off.
In my previous post, I was trying to state what I thought would Work for a new set design. Champagne wishes and caviar dreams. I do not really think WOTC would do that.
So... back on topic. I have been watching my spells and GY to see how relevant the flying lizard could be. In 10 games 3 of them he would have worked, and been able to grow up. In at least 2 of those games he would have died same turn. not much to go on yet. need more input.
Its just so tough to predict what theyll do and that just makes it difficult for us to have trust or customer loyalty. I mean, here we are acknowledging how poor the company is run but loving the game. I simply wish it wasnt the case bc I would love to love the game and just be a die hard fan of the company at the same time but sadly we are here.
If we notice trends however there is a sure thing that seems to be the case. Every new idea WoTC has, absolutely kills in terms of popularity and quality.
Modern masters 1, lottery cards with the expeditions, return to (some plane), arena. Etc etc
I predict and have little doubt that this straight to modern set will be absolutely off the wall bada**. Im willing to bet it will be the most successful set in the last 2-3 years at least.
But.. I fear what will follow in the months and years following the set.
Now as for specific cards in the set.
I do believe counterspell is a contender because R&D released a articale last year stating if not for standard coubterspell would be highly considered for modern. Seeing as how azorius control has such high numbers at the moment and how popular teferi is, its likely theyve changed their stance. Though I firmly believe coubterspell would simply fit right in in modern, and most likely go way of JTMS.
I can see a counterspell variant however with assassins trophy like downside your opponent puts a land card on the battlefield. Or even a counterspell/mana leak that counters any spell or none mana activated ability of 3 cmc or less with no downside at all. That could be a possibility.
As for daze... thats tricky. I dont feel its too powerful at all and would actually go way of JTMS as well however, we are far from alternate casting cost cards in modern. Especially in blue and especially counterspells. It does make me curious though. I wonder what kind of shenanigans it would cause if daze were used in a lantern deck or a whir style deck to protect the BS..could be a problem that wotc isnt ready to deal with and they do indeed like staying on the safe side of decisions golgari grave troll aside.

That's a good point CCC. I would be much happier to get Daze, but it is way less likely for them to print than Counterspell.
WickedApp- I am in the same boat. I just haven't had enough experience with the card yet to make a decision in my deck. I will keep trying it. I don't want to get too dependent on the graveyard. I want to be right at that point where the opponent has a tough time deciding whether graveyard hate is worth it post sideboard and also can be hurt by siding graveyard hate in. I will likely get to play this evening so I will let you guys/gals know how it goes.
I have to ask, do you think daze would be really good for us or just okay?
I honestly cant tell if that card would be great or just okay in our shell. Have you played tested with it at all?
I at this point dont see any reason why it isnt in modern apart from wotc’s fear of alternate cost cards as we both mentioned before. But even that, doesnt make it seem all that strong. But git probe didnt seem that way either right...
hmm i think I may play test with it and see how it would do. I think other decks would make a better use of it then ours.
Cards are difficult to evaluate when theres been nothing like it before.
EDIT: you know what.. i take this back. Holding up a counter fully tapped out is pretty crazy and our opponents would literally live in fear. That can lead to many wrong decisions due to the threat being always present and will force them to always think about playing around it. Could be interesting.

I don't think that is a bad question at all. I personally think that Daze would be really good in our deck, but would likely under perform in most other decks. It's really only works well if you have a tempo oriented deck with a threat. That's why I think it's safe in modern. I haven't tested it yet, but that actually makes me think I should put together some type of testing perimeters to see how it would do. There is every possibility that the CMC count and land count is too high in modern that daze really wouldn't be that great. I don't think Daze would be near as good in modern as it is in legacy.
Your last point is why it's so good in our deck. We can play a turn 1 delver, then hold up counter magic, play a turn three geist and still have daze backup. It would be awesome. Either way I do think it would add an interesting aspect to modern game play.
Daze is good in legacy, it would be good in modern. It would see fringe play in tempo or counter decks. The advantage vs land drop loss is can be negated later. If you are stealing your opponents T1 play or getting to counter there fair counter in a needed situation. Way back when I first started playing magic, there would be large counter spell battles that would determine how the game would play out. Both players would hold counterspells waiting to fire them off. I would not call it a fun way to play magic but it was remember able.
I dream of a world where i can drop geist turn 3 vs jund and not worry about Lili’s down tick. They seem to always have lili no matter whatz its pretty annoying.

I'm just doing a little theory crafting for our deck. I wonder if Daze is printed if Young Pyromancer would become a go to threat. I don't normally like young pyromancer because I am not a huge fan of two drops in our deck and because young p really shines with counter magic which I don't play a lot of. I think Young Pyromancer would get a huge uptick with daze in the card pool. Another card I LOVE that would likely be much better is Abbot of Keral Keep. It still wouldn't see much play, but I would feel more comfortable jamming a copy or two into my personal deck because it's my second favorite card of all time behind Geist.
Ok back to my deck right now.
I played a couple of games last night, but didn't get to play Ptremandar very much so I don't have any updates yet. The deck is still running smoothly and did very well. The meta right now seems to be in a good place for us. We have a good phoenix matchup (especially post board), we have a good burn matchup (again especially good post board), Dredge is tough game one, but games two and three are decent, and we have a good humans matchup. We are in a decent place.
Are there any matchups you guys/gals want to talk about for the deck of the week this week?
Do you have a youtube channel we can watch your games?? id love to see some gameplay!
My deck is quite different from yours but still struggles against the same ones I feel like. Dredge is rough game one. But the rest you named do seem far easier to handle.
My hardest match ups are for sure D&T/E&T and spirits. If those decks are played well they are very difficult to handle. That being said, I havent had a chance to test the recent addition of echoing truth I made. So we will see how that goes. Also now that prices are at an all time low I think ill be going MTGO soon, as all my playing and practice is vs friends and shope goers in paper. So Ill be able to get to practice far more.
On a different note I was looking through my cards and found this
I know some here play some dragons in the main or side and though this doesnt have flying it would be absolutely ball busting vs dredge and even humans I feel like. Havent done any testing at all but i dont see why it cant be tested with seeing as that we do indeed appreciate spice here.

I don't have a youtube channel, but I am going to try to figure out how to record some of my games to play them on here. I love watching StevomatUWR's games and would love to provide some gameplay in action. I may even just tape my playtest group and try to put those videos on.
Echoing Truth actually helps a lot with the dredge matchup. It often bounces 2-3 copies of Bloodghast or Prized Amalgam back to the player's hand which is even better than putting them in the graveyard. It can be the difference. I haven't played a ton against death and taxes so i don't have a ton of experience for this matchup. I do know Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is a huge pain for our deck. I always try to kill her asap or my deck just can't function. I also agree that spirits can be a pain. It's proabably a 40/60 matchup. We basically have to draw a lot of removal to be successful against them. There isn't much that can be done via the sideboard except for Abrade.
Kazuul is a very interesting card. To bad it's casting cost is so high. In grindy creature based matchups he could be a sideboard option that destroys the deck. Unfortunately he might be too slow for dredge/humans. I never say never and I love spice so it's definitely worth testing out.
I am off to play tonight so I will let you all know how it goes.
Kazuul is very slow but seems to be an option for now. Ill try and test with it when my schedule clears up.
as for sideboard I find that abrade is extremely good versus any vial decks. Even vs creature based decks its just fine. So I agree there. Thalia is extremely annoying. I absolutely hate that card alot to be honest. But spell queller is a good way to play against her since you can still counter and have a good tempo play against her. But yes shes an immediate removal target usually.
EDIT: I have to say though, I think that perhaps she shouldnt be an immediate target. I remember watching reid duke play vs a thalia deck with his abzan deck. He left her out for a quite a while bc he knew she wasnt really a threat or keeping him from doing what he needed and wanted. This could be very important as you should consider why you should immediately remove her before doing so. Its simply may not be worth it or even necessary at that moment.

@ccc their are cards that hurt us more than they hurt the caster. Thalia I believe is one of those.Late game she can be worked around, early game she destroys our tempo. So it really depends on the game state.
Sometimes when I play VS burn I leave the Eidolon of the great revel alone and race my opponent. Some times Edilon must die right away. Depends on the game state.
yesterday we played mid seasons finale in our internal league. So first 4 match then top 8. I got play against storm first and second match haha xD. But i won the 2 matches against storm So this is how it's went down.
I hate E-tron so much cuz don't we have our delvers on start we are so ****t :(. Against colorless Eldraz we agree on start we should draw so we both come to top 8. It's was so many before us too who has darw matches so the scores was even betweeen us all.
In the the quarter final i was agianst mardu pyro and that match was really tough. I wan first game and lost the second. And in the third is was so wierd match.
We went on and the time ran out and i win cuz i have more life and him. And for the second i don't understand why we have time in top 8.
Delver - Mardu Pyro 2-1
In semi final my lucky ran out guys. I was up E-tron again :(. I try my best but diden't see my delver in third game.

But yeah i was the storm killer :P.
Great finish MrWickard! That's awesome to hear. It's always awesome to hear we beat storm. We have a good storm matchup, but it is a very skill intensive matchup. Whenever we beat storm we likely played very well.
Eldrazi tron is a super tough matchup. I have found Deflecting Palm to be very good against them. Also, this looks like a tournament where lavinia might have worked out well (storm and tron). I haven't played against Eldrazi tron too much in the recent months. It seems to have lost a little of it's luster. It is still a great deck and is one of our toughest matchups. I do remember that GreatNate played against it twice when he played my deck years ago when it was popular. Echoing Truth was rather good for him.
Thanks so much. Yes against storm u need to know what to remand and always kill there pets who give them discount on spells. Rip is good on them but i have tormods crypt instead.

How is lavinia works on storm?
She stops them from early kills because they can't use rituals to gain mana so they can't cast Past in Flames, Empty the Warrens, and/or Gifts Ungiven before they have 4 mana. This helps with the early kills that often win them games and makes it much harder on them.
I intend to play in the Mythic Championship Qualifier on MTGO on Sunday since the tournament in London will be Modern and the price money is $500.000. Hey, a man can dream, right?
I'll use my current deck and I'd be really happy for any advice you can still give me before the event starts.
Apart from that, have a FNM and a nice weekend everyone
Edit:
My FNM was pretty good.
2-0 vs Grixis Shadow, 2-0 vs GW Value Town, 2-1 vs UW Spirits, 1-2 vs RB Burn
Elspeth ft. flying Geist won me one game against GW Value Town which is very strong on the ground (Goyf, Courser, Voice, Knight) but has no flyers except for Birds. Eslpeth also won me one game against Spirits.
In the last round I was shocked how strong RB Burn with Light up the Stage is! In the third game my opponent destroyed me through Finks and Helix. Since Burn is popular online I might have to add a Firewalker to my SB...
I opted for 2x abrades instead of my 2 angers bc anger sets us back when we down our geist and quellers (my version) though i cant imagine its too different of an outcome for you

So yesterday is was another FNM Modern at our place! And is soo good and go and win my second FNM. I went 4-0 for the first time. I really love my deck now :). Now when i know how to play my deck and how to hold up mana and layback sometimes.
I turn the tables for my friend who played Mardu Pyro when i only have 4 life left
And the last match angainst another Elfs its was so close. If he only had one more swamp land i had lost that match. I hate that card who drain our life for how many elfs they got.
But I am so happy for my second win. Jeskai is back !!

Delver - Storm 2-0
Delver - Storm 2-1
Delver - E-Tron 1-2
Devler - colorless eldraz 1-1
In the the quarter final i was agianst mardu pyro and that match was really tough. I wan first game and lost the second. And in the third is was so wierd match.
We went on and the time ran out and i win cuz i have more life and him. And for the second i don't understand why we have time in top 8.
Delver - Mardu Pyro 2-1
In semi final my lucky ran out guys. I was up E-tron again :(. I try my best but diden't see my delver in third game.
Delver - E Tron 1-2
Great finish. Congrats!

I was up against this matches.
Delver - Mardu Pyro 2 - 0
Delver - Scapeshift 2 - 1
Delver - Elfs 2 - 0
Delver - Elfs 2 - 1
I turn the tables for my friend who played Mardu Pyro when i only have 4 life left
And the last match angainst another Elfs its was so close. If he only had one more swamp land i had lost that match. I hate that card who drain our life for how many elfs they got.
But I am so happy for my second win. Jeskai is back !!
