Thanks. The event starts on Friday. I can win byes for the first two rounds there. Saturday is the main event and I guess I'll be playing for 10 hours. Never played that long and I hope that I can stay focused.
I really want to try Hazoret because I really miss playing a 4-drop. Elspeth, Hero of Bladehold, Venser... I love these cards. Hazoret is easier to cast though with her 3R cost. Which card would you cut for her?
Byes are super important and can be the difference between a top 8 and a top 16. I also have never played that long so I don't have any real pointers for you. I am what you would fall and FNM warrior. To be honest, most of my testing is done with my playgroup of friends. I personally don't travel to events mainly because I have a son and a own a small business (just real estate appraisal, nothing super impressive). If I had played in college I might have traveled to an event or two close to me, but my extracurricular activities in college were a little different than magic :).
As for Hazoret, I would likely cut one Geist of Saint Traft. Geist is my favorite card of all time so it pains me to say that, but he is a three drop that is legendary and hexproof so you really only want one copy at a time. Also this keeps your creature/spell ratio the same. If you don't want to cut a geist, then emerge unscathed is likely the next to go. Emerge is another card I love and that I play, but it can be a dead card sometimes if you don't have a creature to target. That makes it an easy target to replace. I currently run one copy in my deck. I would suggest testing it both ways and seeing how you feel about it.
You don't have a ton of time and the most important thing is to feel really comfortable and very confident come Friday. You have played with this deck for so long that you will have an advantage over all of the people who are picking up "the best deck" for the weekend. I assume most of those people will be playing some type of RG Breach deck since it is the flavor of the week. UR gifts storm has also been skyrocketing lately.
Game 1- This was a pretty anti-climatic game. The oppnenent got stuck on three lands after having three lands in his opener. I was able to take the game fairly easily as his hand filled up with four mana spells.
Game 2- This game was as good as the last game was bad. The game started out fairly normal. He landed a Wall of Omens that slowed down my Monastery Swiftspear. I was able to flip a Delver but he supreme verdicted away my board. With him tapped down I was able to get a Geist of Saint Traft resolved which is the single most important card in this matchup. However, he was able to play a Timely Reinforcements in response which stopped Geist in his track. After a couple of turns of passing and me casting a helix at his face, I was able to cast cryptic command (which he negated and I negated back) to tap down his three tokens and attack through with Geist and the delver that I had cast on a prior turn. The board was now My Geist and flipped Delver vs a Wall of Omens and three tokens. He is at 13 life with 4 cards in hand and I have two. He decided to cast Elspeth, Sun's Champion instead of holding up Celestial Colonnade and Logic Knot. I drew Emerge Unscathed and had Boros Charm. I cast Emerge on Geist and attacked through and charmed for 13 damage exactly. His hand was two additional lands and Logic Knot. He didn't think that there were two cards that would kill him unless I had exactly Cryptic/Boros Charm. This was obviously pretty lucky and went my way, but it was a cool game none the less.
I have played against UW Control several times and so far have faired fairly well against them. However, I think this matchup is likely pretty close and we are possibly unfavored post board if they have a lot of life gain.
Most UW Control these days is running a max of 3 cards (1-2 Blessed Alliance, 1 Timely Reinforcements) that can gain life and 0 is as common as 3.
Good point Darkest_before_dawn. That may be why I have fared somewhat well against the deck. Timely Reinforcements can be a real pain sometimes, but as long as they are following it up with two Kitchen Finks I'm ok with that. :).
Hi CurdBros, thanks for rooting for me
Today's Modern Grand Trial started with a delay at 4 pm and since I had mixed results I dropped after 5 hours (event was set for 7 rounds).
I had a good start with 2:1 victory over Naya Burn (Geist + Worship in play won game 3) but then I lost 0:2 against UW Control and in both games I had no chance at all. My opponent was running little 3-mana Gideon and he was too good -_-
Third round went well because my opponent played Infect and he had no chance against so much removal. Won this match 2:0. However, round 4 I lost against UB Fairies 0:2 (his playset of Cryptics got me good) and round 5 I lost 0:2 against GW Beatdown. That was a fast match: Game 1 we both went down to 2 life real quick. He was lucky, drew a Ooze and gained 2 life so my Helix in hand wasn't enough. Next turn he could attack me for lethal. Second game I was mana scr*wed and he gained unlimited life with Finks, Seer and Vizier (he used Chord for Seer when I tried to remove Vizier).
After returning to the hotel I realized that I didn't even take a single mulligan during all these games. I think that's one of my biggest problems. I keep hands that don't have enough pressure just because they offer 2-4 lands with all colors. I'll work on that tomorrow
It's funny you mentioned mulligans because that is something I need to work on as well. I have. Prices that pros tend to mulligan more often than I do. I often keep hands with lands and spells and don't think about how the matchup should play out. You are correct that our deck performs MUCH better with early pressure.
As for the matchups it seems like you won the even and favored match ups and lost against the unflavored matchups. UW control can be beat but if they land their little Gideon and protect it's extremely difficult. Faeries and GW value are horrible matchups. You pretty much have to win the die roll and draw somewhat well to win those. Luckily they are not popular decks.
Best of luck today and I hope the variance is on your side. Good luck from all your jeskai tempo family 😀.
Played 9 rounds today from 10 am till 8 pm and just got home (well, to the hotel). I am too tired to post a detailed report but I ended up on place 33 out of 386 players with a 6-2-1 score. Wasn't enough to play in the top 8 but it was a very fun experience and I am happy with my result

Congrats Stevomat! That's an excellent result. Without any byes that is really great. Finishing inside the top 10% of any tournament is really great. Can't wait to hear what you played against. Get some rest and congrats again on the great finish
Congratulations stevo on your finish! 6-2-1 in such an open field and big tournament is something to be proud off.
And just as Curdbros, I am looking forward to your report.
Ever since Opt was confirmed to be reprinted it was thinking about changing my deck. And I ended up pretty close to when I got into modern, basically when I came across this deck and fell in love with it.
At first Opt didn't really impress me at all. 1 mana for a cantrip with scry 1 was not my definition of powerful, but damn I was wrong.
This card just made this deck even better and so I started tinkering again.
After a couple of different approaches young pyromancer made a comeback and is here to stay!
With 12 cards that are drawing cards and smoothing out draws (serum visions, Remand, Opt) I cut one land and with only 18 lands left in the deck I ended up cutting the cryptic command.
With the addition of 3 young pyros at least 3 creatures had to get cut but it ended up being 4 (3 SSM and 1 clique, although the clique really hurt).
With those changes the sideboard underwent some changes as well.
Logic knot, Electrolyze and boros charm are impressive every time I have them in hand or jacket to draw them, the best ones being charm and knot, with Electrolyze feeling a little more conditional.
Long story short, here is my new list:
So ranger of eos is gone, with no SSMs it isn't worth it anymore. And the 3rd helix is in the board as burn isnt as big Right now as it has been in the past but I did not want to give up on the power of helix if I run into an extreme aggro deck or a burn deck.
The rest is pretty straight forward. Ceremonious rejection is a concession to the number of tron decks running around right now, wear/tear is just to versatile to pass it by and relic is good against a number of decks and it replaces itself and not like RiP I can somewhat choose when to pop it.
A few days ago I was able to play a few games against Bant Eldrazi, which is probably just a little less powerful than etron. And I went 3-2 and I only had to mull once if I recall correctly.
Young pyromancer was an all-star, blocking with the tokens and turning the corner when I had the advantage. The deck really was impressive, only having 1 minor manaproblem but with this low of a curve only having 2 mana for a couple of turns did not hurt that much. Game 1 I lost because I was a little to greedy, if I had been a little more patient I could have been 4-1 in 2 pre sideboard and 3 post sideboard games.
All in all I just can't wait when ixalan comes out and I can try this bad boy in fnm!
I love the new list Mazeron. I am under the firm opinion that Young Pyromancer will make a huge comeback in modern (specifically in jeskai decks) next week when Opt becomes legal.
Even though I just purchased a new Cryptic Command, I think I may be cutting it as well. It is a great card, however, I don't like the triple blue and I just don't think it's necessary. I may give Logic Knot a try. I may also be cutting one Bedlam Reveler. In a lot of my practice with opt I am really churning through the deck and have a pretty full hand. Therefore, it's not been hard to find my revelers and I can cast them easily. I may give cryptic serpent a try. I will keep testing and keep you all posted.
Yesterday I felt like a zombie and wasn't able to type anything down but today I want to post some thoughts.
I just checked the Top 8 Decklists and now I am pretty sad that I didn't make Top 8 because 6 out of these 8 decks are pretty good match-ups (4x Shadow, 1x EldraTron, 1x Affinity).
If you check the metagame you see that Shadow and Burn were very popular and I kind of "won the lottery" three times during my nine rounds
Even though I couldn't find the time to take detailed notes on every match here's what I played against and what I can still remember: Round 1 - 2:0 vs UW Control Geist won both games, one game I had Geist and Emerge in my starting hand but he took my white mana with Spreading Seas, so I had to pressure him with Delver and Lavamancer. He killed both with Verdict but the next turn I got my white mana and could play Geist... Round 2 - 1:2 vs Boros Burn Lost this one very unlucky. First game I got stuck on 2 lands for too long and lost the race. Last game Delver didn't flip for several turns. Still got him down to 1 life with flipped Delver on board and Spell Snare in hand. I was at three life and he top decked a Lava Spike. Round 3 - 2:0 vs Naya Burn Easy win with 2 Deflecting Palms Round 4 - 2:1 vs Bosos Burn Pretty easy win again. Used the same 6 card "Burn package" from my SB like in the games before (Dispel, Spell Snare, 2x Palm, Celestial Purge and Worship). Round 5 - 2:0 vs Amulet Bloom Killed his Sakura-Tribe Scout and Azusa the second the came into play. Snatched one Azusa from his hand with Clique. He couldn't find amulet both games. He got to Titan but he lost the race both times. Round 6 - 1:1:1 vs Company That was a interesting combo version with Scryb Ranger + Knights of Reliquary and Vizier + Druid and a lot of stuff to grind opponents down. We both won a game and the last game ended with a draw because the time was up. I was too scared to get comboed out so I might have wasted too much burn to kill his combo pieces when it wasn't necessary. Round 7 - 2:0 vs Esper Shadow Won both games thanks to Deflecting Palm and Path+Snap+Path / Burn+Snap+Burn. I think one game I raced him with Geist. Round 8 - 1:2 vs RW Blink That was one of the decks I feared to encounter. Aether Vials, Restos and Wisps flickering Blade Splicers and Thraben Inspectors. First game he drew like 4 extra cards thanks to his Inspector. That card is much better than it seems. I hardly drew any burn that game and lost. Second game I was able to kill him pretty quick. Third game was long and painful and eventually 2 Resto Angels killed me. During these 3 games I didn't see a single copy of my Geist playset -_- Round 9 - 2:1 vs Edrazi Tron These were intense and interactive games. First game Spell Pierce saved me from Chalice and I raced his Elrazi with Geist + Burn. Second game Delver revealed Palm so he couldn't attack with his Smasher but assembled Tron and destroyed my 2 Delvers and then me with 2 ever-growing Ballistas. Third game I had 2 Delvers in my starting hand and drew 2 more until round 4. He couldn't beat that much pressure.
After the tournament I have to say that Snapcaster is the best card in the deck hands down. Never run less than 4 copies! Almost every opponent had to read Emerge Unscathed and I catched several opponents on the wrong foot with it. Deflecting Palm did some good work too.
That's all that comes to mind right now.

Those are some awesome matchups. I do think you would have done very well in that top 8. After the SCG weekend with 3 jeskai flash decks in the top 2 of the open and the classic, it looks like jeskai is in a good spot right now. The other deck from the final in the classic was a UW control deck. UWx is the place to be apparently.
It looks like Deflecting Palm did some major work for you in post board games. That is a card you have been on for awhile now. I too love Deflecting Palm in my sideboard. I don't leave home without two copies. Honestly, you probably should have beat the Boros Burn deck if you didn't get unlucky and possibly could have beat the Company deck with more time. The RW blink deck is a nightmare matchup so that is likely a loss 65%+ of the time. But if luck was on your side you could have been 8-1. 6-2-1 is still great and it doesn't sound like you made any play mistakes that cost you so you should be really happy with that result. I know I would be ecstatic knowing I was a little luck away from x-1 or x-2 at a large event.
I can't wait until next week when Opt becomes legal. Thanks for the write up and congrats again.
I moved one Bedlam Reveler to the sideboard and added a Spell Pierce to the mainboard. I have been seeing a lot more control decks and storm decks and less jund/abzan decks so it's a natural change.
In the sideboard I added Aven Mindscensor and Flashfreeze and removed the two Surgical Extractions. I also changed the flex slot from Hazoret the Fervent to Bedlam Reveler. I have found lately that my maindeck does fine against most GBx decks in the meta, especially with bedlam reveler. Therefore, I don't need to devote many sideboard slot to midrange. I have had a tougher time against the GR Valakut variants so I added a little strength against them in Mindscensor and Flashfreeze. In addition to the mainboard spell pierce I feel I am a great position for the current meta.
Another card I am considering cutting is Stoney Silence. I have a lot of hate for artifacts already and we have a decent affinity and tron matchup already. Lantern Control can be a problem, but I rarely see this deck.
Let me know what you think.
EDIT- I edited my sideboard to remove stony silence and put the surgical extraction back in for now. I also added the 19th land back in for tournament play. For FNM or MTGO 18 lands is fine, but for a long tournament I think 19 lands at 61 cards would be more beneficial for consistency.
Where is everyone? I assume this thread will pick up a lot of steam when Opt becomes legal. I have had great results thus far with it. I am running a "gauntlet" with my play group. We are going to play against each of the top 10 decks and some of the outliers to get a firm grasp on matchups. We will play 6 pre-board games and 8 post board games. I am running Grixis Death Shadow tonight and will post the results.
*I always like to make a small note that my results may be slightly better than it would be against someone that runs the deck religiously. This is especially true with the decks that take some time to master like grixis death shadow. My opponent will be a good player so that isn't a problem, but the test deck may not be their personal deck*
I can't really give you any input on your Opt build since I haven't tested with the card and I don't intend to use it. I would have to change my deck completely and use a much lower mana curve again like you do. However, I think there are several ways to build a good Opt deck and your's is one of them. The other would be more reactive (maybe 4 Remands and even Squelch) with Pyromancer. Maybe I'll give it a try on Xmage, then I don't have to spend money on it
For my part I am still using the same deck I played in Hamburg. In the tournament practice room it's pretty successful (17-2) but like I wrote before there are many brews...
The Electrolyze is my flex slot in which I tried Hazoret and Venser, Shaper Savant and both were awesome when I drew them up at the right time. I think that as a 1-of either one is a fine addition to the deck.
Despite the great results I had with the deck in Hamburg and at MTGO I went 0-3 with it last FNM and that really shocked me. I just drew up the wrong half of my deck consistently that evening. Either no burn/removal or no interruption when I needed it or no fetches/spells to fill the graveyard, when I had Lavamancer in play... That experience made me think about consistency. How can make the deck more consistent? Really difficult to answer

Hi Stevomat,
Glad to see we still have some active members. I really need to find time to play in leagues on MTGO. That's really the only way to get the deck out to the masses (go 5-0 in a league).
As for the consistency, unfortunately that has always been a weakness of the more tempo oriented decks. Having ample burn (like you have) does help mitigate this because we can just burn the opponent out or kill creatures. Versatility of spells really helps with consistency. That's why I like cards like Vapor Snag, Emerge Unscathed, Lightning Bolt, Remand, etc. These have multiple uses which helps mitigate the consistency issue as well. Finally, we have deck manipulation with Serum Visions, Opt, and Sleight of Hand. All of these things work in unison to give us as much consistency as we can get. In the end, sometimes we will still just draw the wrong cards, but that is what makes magic great. That's another reason you have said in the past and I agree that results oriented thinking is helpful in large sample sizes, but can be detrimental in small sample sizes. Another area I see a lot of people differ from "pro" players is the land count. I read an article the other day by Ross Merriam and he said that most decks he sees from people he adds an additional land. This may be due to the fact that for a deck to be tournament ready (for 10+ rounds) you will wan to make sure you don't miss land drops.
I too like to have 2 or 3 "Flex" slots for cards that are well positioned in the meta and for top end cards. I have found that Hazoret is great as one of. I haven't tried vensor, but I assume he is awesome as well. We do want to have fun when we play so it's always nice to put your own signature on the deck so the people at FNM say "wow, I didn't see that coming. That's a really cool deck."
I think your results at Hamburg showed that you have built a very solid deck and play it well. Your results on MTGO further solidify that point. I hope to find time to put up similar results online as well.
I may build a separate deck with Monastery Mentor and Young Pyromancer. I just need to find some time. Maybe when winter comes and things slow down a bit.
Thanks for posting. I can't wait to see how Opt affects the meta next week.

I really don't get people that don't run Izzet Charm as at least a 1-of in this deck. It's versatile - it can pump your fiends, protect your guys and its looting mode means it's always relevant if you have the mana open and want to pump some of your guys.
Here's the one I'm currently experimenting with - the idea is to overwhelm the opponent with weenie elementals, bolts and Insectile Aberrations early-game, and if they're still standing regain tempo with a RCP attached to a weenie or an Enigma Drake. Make sure they're never in control with all the disruption I'm doing. IDK if better removal is worth going Jeskai over Grixis - in general, I prefer the hand disruption of a Thoughtseize or the ludicrous Fatal Push over thinning a guy's deck with Path to Exile.
Wow. You're right Mazeron. Everyone is hard at work testing opt. I still have to put my results from Grixis Death Shadow up, but haven't had time. I promise I will soon.
Gitaxian Probe-
AS for Izzet Charm, it is definitely a playable card in this style of deck. I always found that each mode was slightly over costed when I had it in my hand. This is to be expected because you have to pay for the versatility, but it just didn't make the final cut. I wouldn't fault anyone for not running it.
I do agree that Snapcaster Mage and Serum Visions are vital to the deck. Obviously if there are budget concerns, these can be avoided (especially with opt now).
As for your deck, it looks really sweet. I bet you steal a ton of games with colossus. I really wouldn't make too many changes except for possibly getting opt into the deck. I would cut an izzet charm and a couple of spell pierces and a land (now that you will have opt you can cut a land). You have a lot of counter magic. That's not a bad thing, but to fill up the yard for runechanter's pike opt would be nice. I really like the "plan" of your deck. The pike and battle rages help you end the game quickly and you have a ton of disruption to keep control until you kill them. Very cool.
Thanks all for your kind words. I kind of dropped Cyclops, though; Drake just filled the role I needed better. You pump Cyclops to ludicrous levels, yes, but Drake can attack consistently and evades. Instead, I just loaded 4 Kiln Fiends. They're much frailer, dying to Bolt or Shock effects like Kolaghan's Command as well as Path and Push, but they cost one colored mana less, which in a deck like this is vital.
The lack of SV was because I'd accidentally posted a previous version of the deck. Since my list isn't as aggressive, I only run Bolts for burn. I do realize what a mistake it is to leave it out now. However, I have no idea where to fit in Snapcaster Mages, since my deck is already so tuned. KF and LB are all the early-game presence I need at this point.
Here's the list I made before reading this thread. I will take into account your suggestions!

Of the deck is tuned to your liking and performing well then just keep wining. I always like to hear opinions of others on my deck just in case I missed something, but in the end you know your deck best and how it functions. Your deck is a bit different than some of the decks on here because it plays a decent amount of counter magic. Most of the decks on here play between 4-6 counter spells (with additional in the main). You have a very unique gameplan in the fact that you control the game until you basically one or two shot them with creatures that are gigantic. What I love is that they the creatures become giant through your normal game play so you don't need any additional effort to kill them. Very cool list. I love the variety that jeskai tempo offers.
Did anybody test out Failure // Comply? I tried it as a one of and worked out quite well for tempo. It's not a counter spell so hits cavern of souls' protected drops and things like abrupt decay. The Comply bit then fuels young pyromancer or swiftspears our turn while buying more time. Loved it in the more aggro builds.

You know, after a lot of deliberation, I'm thinking of splashing W in UR Delver just for the protection Boros Charm affords (and Path, obviously). Any other must-have cards?

In- Negate, Dispel, Saheeli Rai
Out- 2x Remand, 1x Serum Visions
Good point Darkest_before_dawn. That may be why I have fared somewhat well against the deck. Timely Reinforcements can be a real pain sometimes, but as long as they are following it up with two Kitchen Finks I'm ok with that. :).
Congrats Stevomat! That's an excellent result. Without any byes that is really great. Finishing inside the top 10% of any tournament is really great. Can't wait to hear what you played against. Get some rest and congrats again on the great finish
Even though I couldn't find the time to take detailed notes on every match here's what I played against and what I can still remember:
Round 1 - 2:0 vs UW Control Geist won both games, one game I had Geist and Emerge in my starting hand but he took my white mana with Spreading Seas, so I had to pressure him with Delver and Lavamancer.
Round 3 - 2:0 vs Naya Burn Easy win with 2 Deflecting Palms
Round 4 - 2:1 vs Bosos Burn Pretty easy win again.
During these 3 games I didn't see a single copy of my Geist playset -_-
Round 9 - 2:1 vs Edrazi Tron These were intense and interactive games.

1 Bedlam Reveler
I am also thinking about trying Counterflux and also Shadow of Doubt in place of Aven Mindscensor.
*I always like to make a small note that my results may be slightly better than it would be against someone that runs the deck religiously. This is especially true with the decks that take some time to master like grixis death shadow. My opponent will be a good player so that isn't a problem, but the test deck may not be their personal deck*
I will post the results below.

Very cool.
The lack of SV was because I'd accidentally posted a previous version of the deck. Since my list isn't as aggressive, I only run Bolts for burn. I do realize what a mistake it is to leave it out now.
