Hi all, long time no post. I'm still playing the deck but i've been struggling vs grixis and midrange decks in general, so i got my hands on 2x kira, great glass spinner. I'm still debating if i put them main deck on in the sideboard. I'm at a point where i'm considering playing all 4 spellskite main deck too.
Thoughts?
I've contemplated Kira and tried her, but her ability counts against us aswell when trying to equip swords and turn artifacts blue. Against Grixis, since they don't play exile type removal, Wurmcoil Engine and Hangarback Walker do a number on them. Trick is getting past their Remands and Mana Leaks, Æther Vial helps me a lot with that.
But if you don't play any of the Swords or Batterskull, I think Kira is safe to include.
Or just play 2x Monastery Siege.
I'm still playing this deck but trying to figure out the card draw I want because I feel its what this deck is desperately lacking.
Like someone said earlier we need card quantity not selection when it comes to CA.
Been toying with a 1 of Thirst For Knowledge.
I've also been thinking the value route with Perilous Research. With Hangarback Walker, Wurmcoil Engine and Solemn Simulacrum we could get a lot of value. Its the cheapest instant speed card draw I could find that gives us quantity.
Again I'm looking for draw options that get around Lodestone Golem or atleast are cheap enough that paying the extra tax isn't backbreaking:
I've found Bident of Thassa to dependent on an "all ready winning" position.
Haven't tried Military Intelligence, but it kinda looks like Bident and isn't an artifact. Trading Post has potential, but still cost too much initially for only 1 card. Thopter Spy Network, again looks like Bident and isn't an artifact. Courier's Capsule, potential, but really is a 2UU spell if to be used immediately.
Leaves me with Thoughtcast, Perilous Research and Thirst for Knowledge.
Out of all I really wish I can make Thoughtcast work. But the best card to support it is often 3-4x Darksteel Citadel, which by itself in this deck does nothing. So idk, still tweaking.
Ultimately, I'd like for this deck to be a Stax-Aggro deck with Tectonic Edge and Lodestone Golem restricting the opponent and Wurmcoil/Superion beatdowns early. Grand Architect allows us to do both at the same time. Just need to unlock that right draw spell/engine.
Yeah i've had monastery siege in the sideboard for quite some time and i've been happy with it but Kira, great glass spinner is a creature which makes her miles better, and her protection lasts if the game goes long.
I've taken out the swords for her, because i noticed the main way i lose games is facing a barrage of removal spells, fueled by dark confidant or snapcaster mage + kolaghan's command. With 2 kira and 2 spellskites i feel i have better chances. At worst kira is a blue beater and can block flyers, which makes her very useful vs affinity despite her main ability not being very relevant in the matchup.
I also like the interaction with spellkite, countering even the second spell not directed at it forces the opponent to kill spellskite before killing kira!
Also i've tried thirst for knowledge in the past but it was meh. First we don't really want to discard artifacts, and we have no graveyard trick, so it is just draw 3 discard 2 most of the times. They are also pretty bad with golem.
I also tried military intelligence but not being an artifact was a huge let down, i think i'd rather have bident if i had to choose between the two.
Perilous research is interestig, at worst it can be played in response to a removal spell. Thoughtcast might be ok too.
What do you think about Courier's Capsule?
Immune to Lodestone Tax, initial investment of only 2 mana.
Is there another way to abuse it/bring it back to the battlefield?
Think I'll test two in place of Thirst/Thoughtcast...
Not sure how i feel about capsule. It seems like the most synergistic draw spell, aside from bident of thassa, but on the other hand it just feels like 4 mana is a lot for draw 2. If it works for you then thats fine but i'm a bit skeptical.
For my part i try to improve consistency by trying out gitaxian probe. Free cycling seems perfect for that goal, if i'm spending mana i want it to be for developping my board, and because of opportunity cost there is nothing else i want to add to the deck than what i currently run. Kira is sideboard stuff in the end, i didn't want to add more non artifact 3cc stuff.
EDIT: I've updated the sideboard to be a trinket mage package, one mana artifacts are good with certarch and i like how mishra's bauble and metamorph give us flex slots for siding in stuff. At the very worst mage can tutor for signal, which is nice with a bonus 2/2 blue body.
I'm giving certarch a try, tapping lands seems great and it adds up with golem tax. Tapping blockers also seems great, sometimes i have trouble punching through blockers with golem without offering a trade. Playing certarch and dropping vedalken shackles also has the advantage of allowing me to play the full cavern of souls since every blue card is a vedalken.
I'm trying the full metamorph playset for added consistency and redundance, copying a certarch doesn't seem bad too.
EDIT: i'm going to try mishra's bauble for the same reasons i tried gitaxian probe, but it is a metacraft enabler and doesn't make me loose life.
I feel like hangarback walker would be good here because dead walkers can enable certarch metacraft, i might give them a try in the future.
kataki and stony silence aren't nearly as good against this deck as against affinity. I've beaten turn 2 kataki more than i lost to it, just keeping 2-3 key artifacts in play is enough for the win. The only time i lost to kataki was against it combined with choke, now THAT is gamebreaking. Fortunately this shouldn't happen often at all, and with cavern of souls choke is less an issue. This deck can completely ignore stony silence and kataki most of the times.
Mox opal isn't needed. The rainbow mana is mostly useless and the mana burst does not compensate for the card loss. All the enablers in the deck can attack, mox opal is sadly not a creature and in this deck noncreatures need to be better than «if you draw the god hand you'll drop this one turn earlier».
@Ace1: As far as Certarch, whenever I see Metalcraft I think 3-4x Darksteel Citadel. Otherwise, you're going to be holding those Baubles hostage more often than you'd like just to maintain Metalcraft...esp since Certarch is not himself and artifact.
You probably also want 2 more Tectonic Edges in there aswell to push the tax plan even further.
If you want to bring in the big money Mox Opal is perfect for this deck.....Against some midrange strategies Culling Scales might also be of help.
My version of the deck is more susceptible to Stony Silence since I run Æther Vial and other artifacts with activated abilities. Except against "pure-control" running white, if I anticipate Stony Silence I usually board out the Æther Vials.
Against control running white, I usually need the Vials to get around countermagic, so I board in Logic Knot and Echoing Truth. Logic Knot is the counterspell of choice as its synergistic with Lodestone Golem and fetchlands.
Against Kataki I have 2x Murderous Cut mainboard. Which, like Logic Knot, the ability to "reduce" the cost through delving gets around Lodestone Golem tax.
I'd love to run Mox Opal as you suggested, but having to run Darksteel Citadel along side it makes the deck to vulnerable, Stony Silence becomes Stone Rain. And siding out Citadels doesn't sound like a viable strategy either. Citadel doesn't help either with Vedalken Shackles as Ace mentioned.
Not sure about Culling Scales, but there might be away to abuse it. I'd probably rather run Crucible of Worlds instead at the 3cmc spot if I had to choose. Can get back Blinkmoths, Tectonic Edge, Academy Ruins etc...hmm...
Darksteel citadel is pretty bad here, we recquire 2 blue mana for turn 3 for architect. If i played citadels (or more tectonic edges) i'd have to cut blinkmoth nexus, which is a lot better than citadel. Also blinkmoth IS a pseudo citadel, just activate it and you have your artifact for certarch. I've done this a number of times, keeping mr rishadan port active.
@be-lakor: also note that lantern control plays a bazillion one mana artifacts and ancient stirrings to find them, having consistent turn one or two mox opal mana is easy for them. I don't mind waiting turn 3 for vedalken certarch to be active, but opals need to be online turn one or two otherwise they suck.
Thoughts on equipment like Lightning Greaves and Whispersilk Cloak?
More so to equipt Lodestone Golem or any of our other beaters, or even Grand Architect.
Whispersilk Cloak can help push damage through and protect the creature at the same time.
After playing a while with equipments (mainly sword of light and shadow) i found i don't like durdling around with those. My meta is very combo and aggro, the kind of meta that forces you to do stuff early or die. However lightning greaves seems like the less durdly piece of equipment since the equip is free and you can win on tempo with haste, so i'd start here.
I never tried any of those but i believe they are worth testing.
It solves the problem of spending mana or tapping guys (and therefore not attack) for equip costs. It might be a better and more diversified creature protection suite than the 4 spellskites, i'm thinking 2 greaves and 2 skites. Seems more synergistic and aggressive than Kira. Also you can build a tension were the opponent doesn't know if he/she should leave a blocker or attack, we can play a little mind game.
Trying a slightly new sideboard, took some inspiration form top8 Merfolk sideboards since I figure we mostly resemble them and they already have a "meta-tune" sideboard.
Looks like they mostly run countermagic, I choose Disdainful Stroke to deal with combo decks like Tron, Scapeshift, Bloom Titan, Twin, Ad Nauseam and Collected Company etc. Spell Pierce is also a catch "all" and can deal with Stony Silence, maybe it should be Spell Snare??
@Be_lakor, list definitely looks interesting, since you are running white you ever thought of Grand Arbiter Augustin IV.
I tried Pila-Pala and found that we don't have a consistent way of finding pieces or even protecting it.
I do like the idea of Eye of Ugin, I've been thinking about running Treasure Mage myself.
...This one still feels slow somehow. I also want more interaction with my opponent in the maindeck.
Yea, your deck seems to be coming along, Talismans are a good addition.
I feel like Chief Engineer somewhat fills that role in my build, but if I were to run the Arbiter, I'd consider Talismans.
+2x Staff of Domination:
Instead of 2x Walking Archive what do you think of 2x Staff of Domination instead?
I see your reason for Archive and its good he's a creature, but giving the opponent card draw (outside of the infinite mill with Pila) is just too risky. Staff along with Pila can give you infinite "life, card draw, tap all opponents creatures, untap Hangarback Walker and grow him infinitely etc.
@Be_lakor:
I've actually tweaked my deck and played a few matches yesterday to go more "big". I was trying Courier's Capsule for card advantage and it just didnt feel optimal. So I took a look at some Legacy MUD (Metalworker) lists and saw that they really don't run card advantage except for the occasional Staff of Domination. They just play big threats and protect them with thier stax effect and Lightning Greaves. So I upped my Lightning Greaves count and switched out the Capsule and a Myr for 2x Treasure Mage and a Steel Hellkite. Also took out the Murderous Cut and run 2x Dismember instead as an earlier response to Twin.
Just wondering, is the fetch-shock manabase even necessary anymore? You've cut murderous cut so you are basically fetching and shocking yourself to save life loss from dismember. That doesn't make much sense...
@Be_lakor: splashing white opens up interesting options. For removal you could try dispatch. I'm not sure you have enough artifacts for consistent metalcraft but that's something to consider.
Also it gives you access to very good sideboard cards. For exemple you could include rest in peace. The card is very powerful and the only reason it isn't played more is that everyone is using their graveyard as a ressource. Since we aren't, RIP is pretty mandatory in the board.
There is also classic stuff like leyline of sanctity and aven mindcensor. Also good old disenchant is worth a slot, your deck seems to suffer a lot from stony silence, i'd board a few of those games 2 and 3 every time you see white mana game 1.
Darkslick shores and sunken ruins have next to no drawback and can be used to reduce pain from dismember. Chromatic star is my new cantrip. I like how they are free with etherium sculptor and in addition to reducing pain from dismember they allow me to cast judge's familiar and etherium sculptor off of architect mana. They can also fix awkward double blinkmoth nexus draws, allowing me to cast my blue stuff turn 2 or 3.

+2x Vedalken Shackles:
You said you wanted more interaction and with 8 islands I think you can run Shackles. You could even up the count by making either 2x Seachrome Coast/Glacial Fortress into 2x Hallowed Fountain. Then throw in 4x Flooded Strand.
+2x Muddle the Mixture:
This was how other Pila decks searched for him. Transmute also allows you to avoid the Lodestone Tax.
