Yes definitely would prefer to cast with spell mastery turned on. I like Dark Petition over Diabolic Tutor. Having the chance to get the 3 mana after is just so good.

I've been playing a budget jank version of Zombies on MTGO. Its budget and Jank but it actually seems to have a fair amount of promise. It runs a list similar to a lot of what I'm seeing here but has Dregscape Zombie, Prized Amalgam, and Necromancer's Stockpile. I'm to poor to afford Gravecrawler lol.
I say that to say this: Necromancer's Stockpile with Amalgam and Dregscape is already pretty good. Gravecrawler added to the mix would be super awesome. Stockpile is really good when you draw it. The worst part of the card is NOT having it.

The following link is an invitation to join Pucatrade (card trading service though similar to TCGPLayer). If you follow the link then it awards me with tokens to exchange for actual cards. Thanks! https://pucatrade.com/invite/gift/86097
Herenorthere, that is definitely a fun combo of cards. I have played with them a little bit. And yeah it can be pretty powerful, so long as you're not facing any GY hate. That's where I feel it kinda folds. This is one of the main reasons I chose to splash green in my deck. Green offers a wide variety of enchant/artifact removal which is what most of the GY hate cards are that are commonly played today. Gravecrawler is one of the best cards in my deck in my opinion. This card is usually always doing work and 90% of the time I am attacking with him every turn he can. Constantly bringing him back and most likely triggering Diregraf Colossus's ability which is awesome!
Even when I am faced up against GY hate and don't have any GY hate removal cards, the deck still has been able to stabilize and create a good board presence to overwhelm most opponents. (Keep in mind, my play testing has only been on the MTGO just for fun room). Though I plan to start testing it out in the Tournament Practice room.
Erebos is pretty good at stopping my opponents from getting ahead with too much life and also prevents the infinite life combos. On top of that she helps me draw cards.
I wrote up a small bit about the deck and what it's trying to do. I'm a novice at best when it comes to write-ups. Ultimately I would love some more feedback and potential ideas or thoughts about the deck. Both pro and con.

This is a current U/B brew I'm working on. Methinks I have too much creature hate. It's also difficult to not clog the three drop slot. I was torn between Diregraf ghoul and Shambling Goblin for a 1 drop, but it seems that Shambling gets you essentially the same thing defensively. I'll give up the extra bit of Power to be able to kill a signal pest, or a glistener elf, Cursecathcer, Legion Loyalist, etc.
Aether vial kicks this up a notch. A guy at my work has a bin full of old decks and has like 6 vials, He said he would give me 3 of the damaged ones. So yeaaaaaaaaa.
I could use Geth's Verdict as my sac outlet, but that seems inconsistent. I'd ideally like to have two sac outlets if possible. Do I bring Nantuko Husk in for Lord of the Undead? Seems like we get more synergy that way. Any thoughts on my removal/counters? Countersquall seems good. Sideboard is still up in the air.
Stillmoon I like for the pro White. Dragons's claw for Burn/Goblins. Dispel for Burn/CoCo. Tormod's crypt for GY. Drown in Sorrow for Merflk/Goblins/elves. Dark betrayal seems a little weak, I just hate infect. Anything we could put in that SB slot that may be better?
@Cheapdudes, Darkblast is stupid good against Infect and Affinity. It can do work in other match-ups as well and with the old, upkeep-blast, dredge, main-blast routine, it can take out 2-toughness creatures reliably.
So this is my Sultai Zombies build, in my experience it's pretty ok, often going 2-2 in my LGS on average. The only thing that i'm having issue with is aggro, where control and tokens I can generally deal with. Been working on this thing for a while and would appreciate some feedback.
You could maybe go to a one-of GrimGrin, a one-of Prized Amalgam and go with a 3-of with one of the 3 drop zombie lords. Death BaronCemetery reaperLord of the undeadDiregraf Captain, etc. Amalgalm is meh in Modern IMO. If I'm playing against merfolk/goblins/infect, I dont have time to wait around for this thing AND something else to die before I can get value out of it. I'd rather CoCo knowing that I can potentially have a board with multiple 4/4 creatures (potentially with deathtouch if you're playing Death Baron) Yea, I could discard it to Lotleth Troll and with gravecrawlers that makes sense. Getting two dudes for B is not bad at all. I'm just basing everything on how explosive other tribal decks can be. I think Z-Lords can be sneaky good if you're playing CoCo. Hell, I may even take out Amalgam all together and throw Diregraf Colossus in there.
You're definitely right about lords and CoCo potential, i've dropped the 3 Prized Amalgam for 3 Diregraf Captain with potential to switch that lord for Death Baron, however the deathtouch on Diregraf and the ability it has synergizes well with Grimgrin, Corpse-Born may make me keep him instead (also the price difference).
If you go a bit deeper into a 'counters matter' theme, Hardened Scales can give a second recurring damage cannon with Geralf's Messenger and Retribution of the ancients. its not 1 mana = 3 Damage, but 1 mana for 2 damage is still a nice deal.
If you're referring to the "machine gun" style builds that vodendin and I were discussing in the last couple posts, Melira would be counterproductive. We have to be able to reset Geralf's Messenger by putting -1/-1 counters on him. Only then can he remain undying and continue to feed the blasting station or continue to feed ... Himself to himself?? via the Hardened Scales/Retribution of the Ancients trick.
Edit - I suppose Melira doesn't short-circuit the Blasting Station combo as long as there are other creatures on the board to assign -1/-1 counters to.
2nd Edit - Guess I should quote what I'm responding to in the future?
I like the core creature list, seems like nantuko husk should make its way into this. Green black and black seems like solid routes. I like putting abrupt decay in my decks. But seriously what is a good mana curve for this? Like 8-10 1 drops 12 two drops? 12 three drops? 4-6 four drops? What's over 4 that is good? Obviously gray Merchant of asphodel what else is truly worth it. Kalitas sounds good in this too.
Howdy, gang. I normally play Death Cloud in Modern but have been building a Zombie deck in my head for a while now -- it's good to see there's some live interest. A player at one of my two local LGS had a BR Zombies-ish deck (you'll see) written up at SCG a while back and I've liked the idea ever since, although I've always presumed I'd be building BG instead. A deck without Abrupt Decay is just no kind of deck.
Kalitas does seem good here; I think it would be a mistake to misdiagnose most Zombie tribal builds as straight aggro, so having a big butt and making more dudes is an appealing midrange plan. Has anyone given thought to Grave Titan as a finisher? One at the top of the curve seems like a good way to avoid running out of gas. At first glance I'm a bit skeptical of the "Phyrexian Obliterator for devotion" plan, although lord knows Obliterator is good; it just seems like you're losing out on tribal synergies and making yourself run Gray Merchant when you could probably do better. My first glance could be wrong. Gray Merchant for 10 sounds like hilarious fun.
Grave Titan is good if you move into midrange for sure. Thing is, you need more spells vs creatures sometimes so that is a challenge to figure out in modern. Ghoultree looks ok, so does Jarad, but it def changes this actual archtype. I been looking into bringing back a constellation strategy with delirium as a possibility for this deck.
Not much for zombie additions so far from EMN. Was really hoping to see a new interesting zombie. Although I won't complain, Relentless Dead has been a lot of fun to play.

My take at modern zombies. I played necromancer's stockpile in standared with tymaret and loved it. he gave me extra reach and i could do so many things at instant speed. after a few turns you basically draw, swing, and pass. you can make tokens, draw cards, and burn face all at instant speed so tokens comming into play tapped is only rough when you need chump blockers. however modern gives access to zombie infestation and now cryptbreaker to get you those tokens untapped on your opponents turn. tymaret is also a sac outlet for relentless dead even from the graveyard. you could potentially hose someones graveyard hate if they forget his second ability, or you have him in hand with a discard outlet.
I always liked red with stockpile because the ability to draw into the extra burn lets you close out games.
There are loads of other cards that i think might have play in this sort of deck, or maybe just warrant testing.
Brain Gorgers potential upside with the madness cost. this deck wants to be discarding zombies. not sure if its strong enough though becasue if you dotn have the spare manna its just a vanilla zombie. Cavern of Souls potentially strong but this deck doesnt cast as many of its zombies as it does discard them. Dark Withering sideboard removal? too expensive to play for its CMC but its madness is strong. Death Baron lord plus deathtouch makes zombies hard to deal with in combat. deathtouch on everything makes our army hard to block and puts them in burn range Diregraf Captain another lord that can give extra reach by pinging when our zombies die. adding another blue card may change the mana From Under the Floorboards potential huge mass of zombies to overrun an opponent and a nice life gain as well. stockpile makes it hard to miss a land drop so we can play this off of a cryptbreaker discard at EoT and swing with a horde. Geralf's Messenger very strong zombie. plays well with amalgam too. just not sure if it does enough as its not realy abusable with the discard outlets Haakon, Stromgald Scourge wants to be discarded. is a zombie, and plays well with amalgam. the life loss when he dies could hurt. Incendiary Flow burn spell that exiles. probably a sideboard card that comes in vs kitchen finks etc. Lifebane Zombie color hoser that has evasion. another possible sideboard card Liliana of the Veil pricey but she fits what we want to do. the discard is so anti symmetrical becasue we pitch gravecrawlers and amalgams while they lose resources. Lord of the Undead a lord. this one recurs stuff which is nice but only one per turn and requires an investment. if we play a lord i think the others are better Risen Executioner lord number 4. this one has more synergy with the rest of the deck with it being able to be cast from the yard, however that cost gets expensive as we pitch more and more non-recursive guys. Veilborn Ghoul this one is interesting. super easy to loop every turn, especially once you get 2-3 in the yard and recur them all just by making a land drop. potentially very strong if you can loop them with stockpile, drawing several cards a turn and making several zombies, but pretty bad cards otherwise. vengeful Pharaoh pitch to stockpile and eat any creature that gets in through your army for no investment. also high devotion count if you run gary. nim devourer pitch, reanimate, sac the token and trade your 2/2 for a 4/1. comes back on his own. can even sac itself just to trigger amalgams if you get stuck.
Those are just some cards ive been brainstorming with and a super rough decklist. obviously there is still more to be seen in EMN but any criticism and/or discussion is welcome. Im pretty new to the modern format so be harsh but gentle.
These changes seems good and green provides a wide sideboard to fight against decks with enchantments and artifacts.
I'm not very sold on cryptbreaker yet. It has lot of pros but also seems a bit slow. For one mana you have card advantage and more bodies but not sure if it's good or bad. What do you think guys??
For this new set I only wish they reprint carrion feeder!!!!! .
With the inclusion of some newer zombies, I took a look at what a lord-build would look like. Settled on Vial instead of Company because there are multiple engines that we would want to be dumping our mana into. There are 10 discard outlets, 10 recurring pieces, and 6 creatures that can be played from the yard or as madness when discarding. Looking at testing out Zombie Infestation instead of the stockpile next as another free discard as all of this is a lot of mana.
How is cryptbreaker working for you guys? I'm not sure if it's good or not.
I've playtested cryptbreaker some and I think the card is pretty awesome for a 1-drop. I think playing that turn 1 and discarding something like Prized Amalgam turn two to make a 2/2 zombie is pretty sweet. The draw seems really nice too if you keep zombies up for blockers and then tap at the end of the opponent's turn to draw an extra card.
I have been working on the below list since EMN came out and I am really excited to take it to FNM as soon as I can. The deck is centered around Diregraf Colossus and Haakon, Stromgald Scourge counting Nameless Inversion as a zombie and a knight. This card has a lot of synergy with the deck because I can pitch it to Cryptbreaker or Grisly Salvage and still cast it multiple times with Haakon. For diregraf colossus, it adds a +1/+1 counter to it when its in the graveyard and if I cast it I get another 2/2 zombie. With this list I have 10 zombies that come back to the battlefield extremely easy and 14 ways to put them in the graveyard. I think Grisly Salvage and Liliana, the Last Hope are both very good card selection choices that also help fill the yard for more zombie shenanigans.
Hi every one, I'm a Jund player but I love Zombie and I try to make a good tribal for FNM or small events (when I want to play an other deck than my Jund).
To compensate the lack of draw and because Golgari’s colors are pretty strong and efficient in a Zombie deck (in my opinion), I chose to play Collected Company with the biggest number of CCM3 or less zombies.
The deck seems good against midrange and control decks, it will be more difficult against agro deck like Infect or Affinity or combo decks, that’s why the side board is oriented for those match up.
What do you think about it ?
