Vampiric Rites just seems like it has all the synergy with the Gate. It is a card that actually rewards us for doing what we already do. I really like this card for a number of reasons and I see it replacing the flex spot I was previously filling with Altar's Reap in all my different builds.
2) Gains Life to help offset Dark Confidant and Bitterblossom.
3) 1cmc!
4) Late game mana sink and great response to removal.

This is the decklist I play at my Modern FNM and it's black to the bone! It has a bit of Gate in it I prefer the Obliterator as a finisher, I use 4x geth's verdict as budget Lili, 4x Duress because artifacts, enchantment, sorcery, instants and planewalkers usually kill me and 2 hero's downfall to kill what go for the throat can't (and on board planewalkers)
Hope you enjoy! I went 1-2 last FMN :/
1x Bojuka Bog
4x Mutavault
14x Swamp
4x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Sorcery (10)
4x Duress
4x Inquisition of Kozilek
2x Languish
Creature (16)
4x Dark Confidant
4x Gatekeeper of Malakir
4x Phyrexian Obliterator
4x Vampire Nighthawk
Instant (8)
4x Geth's Verdict
2x Go for the Throat
2x Hero's Downfall
Artifact (2)
2x Sword of Light and Shadow
Sideboard (15)
4x Drown in Sorrow
1x Erebos, God of the Dead
4x Extirpate
4x Rain of Tears
2x Relic of Progenitus
Yeah that's a pretty good base for a "Gate Deck" - what archetypes do you have trouble with? Which are you finding as easier matchups?
I think Vampire Nighthawk could easily be switched for vault skirge.

Last FNM I lost twice against grixis control, they kept cleaning my creatures and I didn't draw a single mutavault. I won against elves collected compagny because I had alot of duress to remove them and a languish in the my opening hand, which is perfect against aggro. As for vampire nighthawk, I just feel that I can't put him aside since he fills too much holes in my deck, he's my only flying blocker, he gives me time to survive aggro and burn if he do not eat a bolt and he stalls the board if my opponent has a worthy creature to attack with but no removal to get rid off batman. That's why I keep him. I tend to struggle alot against control, but I think I could have even more trouble with burn or red aggro.
Hi everyone! What do you guys think of the new aether revolt cards for our beloved mono black archetype? I personally think that Gifted Aetherborn migh find a spot in my 75.
Here is my current build:
4x Dark Confidant
4x Gatekeeper of Malakir
4x Phyrexian Obliterator
4x Vampire Nighthawk

Great mix of great archetypes! I'm also excited about fatal push, but I don't use fetches to trigger the revolt, which is the easiest way to get it. I have tons of sacrfice, therefore I keep using my tragic slip and it goes around indestructible as well. As for gifted aetherborn, I'm not sure if I want to replace gatekeeper and solve the life loss problem. It acts as a 4-8 vampire nighthawk, which is hanging removal and one more trick to use with my Arena. On the other hand, gatekeeper is a solid 2-1 which is the gate main pillar. So I would switch it for nighthawk, reducing my converted mana cost even more for less Bob pain, but I would still be short on life gain sources and nighthawk does have flying that helps greatly. What do you think?
P.S. I've spent countless hours on this forum, rereading everything that has been posted, I love the archetype. And by the way, your replies are super constructive and helpful!
Thanks, this has always been a pet deck of mine - and I think with the new cards, the archetype can possibly see a big boost.
On Vampire Nighthawk and Gifted Aetherborn:
Personally I am not a huge fan of either of these creatures in today's meta. With the printing of Fatal Push I think these cards get slightly worse - that is they trade poorly with a 1-mana removal spell (and now there's a bunch to pick from, and people are going to be jamming lightning bolt, path to exile, and their new brother fatal push).
Personally I see the deck using a combination of the following to help with triggering revolt.
Smallpox
Ghost Quarter
A couple fetches (any black fetch will do)
Really the card is just fine as a kill spell for 2cmc or less. The extra range is a bonus - and not too difficult to turn on. The deck has so many sac effects that can easily clean up what a non-revolting push leaves behind. With sac-able lands in the deck and urborg, as well as smallpox and a few other outlets - push can almost reliably kill percy as well which is a huge bonus.

I apologize if this isn't the right place for this(it's gb instead of mb) but this rock list is my attempt at an Eva Green/ the Gate style deck.
It's a rough draft I'm going to play thursday. Aquiring cards on short notice isn't an issue as we allow proxies to grow our modern community.
I wanted some thoughts on it. My meta is as follows. Mardu control (nahiri-krul), Bant Eldrazi, Grixis Delver, Ad Nausaum, Merfolk, Eldrazi and taxes,Dredge, Living End, Afinity, Tez control, Burn, Azban Coco, Coco slivers
I like the sporit of the list. Very attractive lineup of cards. I think it needs some tweaking though.
Have you tested with fatal push yet? I am worried you dont have enough ways to kill your persecutors. Push is eligible but i feel a couple more black fetches might help. Actually maybe just -1 miren +1 ghost quarter. 3 treetop might be too many.
I am skeptical of bow of nylea - how is it in practice? I think i would swap it for another discard spell.
Also. Maybe -1 finks and +1 collective brutality. Cery versatile. Brutality is good for your flayers and goyfs with BItterblossom.
Just some quick thoughts

It's a fresh list and all theory craft atm.
Once I have some stuff proxied up I'll try and dial in the sac outlets for percy.
And I went with bow as a 1 of to feed goyfs, enable delirium, loop finks, and murder delver (it's all over my playgroup).
Edit: Made a fair number of changes after talking to a friend who plays a ton of jund. I'll need to test if I can reliably push 4 cmc and kill my own Percy. Swaped the 2nd miren for a 3rd quarter in the meantime.
Thanks for the reminder on brutality I put two in the board for burn and as extra combo hate. I'd MB but I found it lackluster in a lot of my local metagame.
Also cut Rite of Consumption, had a hard time wanting to do that though. Ill have to find time to test it both ways (a more aggro build or this one which is more rock). Any thoughts?
I went to a modern tournament yesterday and my list did pretty well! 3-1 (decklist in attachment)
Match 1 (2-0)
G/R Werewolves
Good match up, I think he didn't attacked me once, too many edicts and card advantage with bitterblossom and lily on board.
Match 2 (2-1)
Infect
Good game overall, my bitterblossoms and ghost quarter saved me so many times for the nexus. Tragic slip on T1 was a beast against blighted agent and glisterner elf.
Match 3 (1-2)
Grixis Control
Oh boy that match was hard, bitterblssom won me the first game, but my discard couldn't do the job against all the bolts, snapcaster and mana leaks.
Match 4 (2-1)
Necrotic Ooze Graveyard combo
Good match up for us, too many edicts for his single necrotic ooze!
I sometimes got mana screwed for BBB or BBBB casting cost, but the thing is my deck have 12x 3 drops and I ideally need only 8x. I want to keep gatekeeper because he has so much value and Lily is you know... can't replace her. So I'm here with vampire nighthawk 1BB who I would love to swap for Gifted Aetherborn, because it's one less mana and I might just block a ground creep the same way I would block with nighthawk. And the no life gain route is not a possiblity for me... Dilemma!
I think the main switches here being Tragic Slip for Fatal Push (funny how similar the names are) and Obliterator for Persecutor will help the deck a lot.

Thanks for your quick reply! I'll try this decklist next FNM for sure, looks ultra solid, less pain from colorless and obliterator and more fatal push trigger!
As for the fetches, would it be better to add one more ghost quarter for the fatal push trigger? And maybe, maybe a fourth urborg to manage the BB and BBB? We have so much life loss with The Gate and only one reliable life gain source. And oh boy I hope my opponent do not drop a Chalice of the void on 2, it counters half of the deck

The number of colorless lands and urborgs in the deck has always been a fine line for me. Ive always had the best luck with 2-3 urborgs and 3-5 colorless lands. I havent tested in a while but i think what you propose would probably work out. Possibly even trading the miren for another quarter instead and leaving the urborg count at 3.
I dont think ive ever seen a chalice on 2 unless it was from me in a prison deck! I wouldnt worry about chalice too much at all.

So here is the list I will test once I get my hands on 4x Fatal Push (I refuse to pay $5 each)
I wouldn't really call it "the gate" but it shares quite a few cards with the shell. It is more of a mono black pox deck, but I figured I would post it anyway in case you guys were curious where I was going to go with mono black and the new cards:
Edit:
I forgot about Yahenni himself! This card is amazing for "The Gate" - sac outlet and synergy with bitterblossom and bloodghast. He can get big fast with the amnount of removal in the deck and take the game over. He also enables revolt on fatal push (as he should - I think that is him on the card)...
So big additions to the gate:
Fatal Push
Yahenni
Yahenni's expertise
can't wait to test these. More excited about the gate version now!

I am sooo tempeted to go the vampire route with the gate right now:
1x Arena
2x Bojuka Bog
3x Ghost Quarter
1x Shizo, Death's Storehouse
13x Swamp
3x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4x Dark Confidant
4x Gifted Aetherborn
3x Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4x Vampire Nighthawk
3x Bitterblossom
4x Fatal Push
4x Geth's Verdict
4x Inquisition of Kozilek
3x Thoughtseize
4x Liliana of the Veil
Would it be viable? no more life loss problem or recurring creatures at least! and the shizo land is there to make my kalitas trample-ish just like percy and obliterator. Arena is the flex spot, is can be replaced by anything relevant. I just love the kalitas engine effect, just like bitterblossom.
Why Geth's Verdict and not something like Victim of Night or Dismember ?
Do you expect to play against a lot of "Bogles" decks with hexproof creatures ?
Also without anthems and or faeries to support it Bitterblossom seems very mediocre here.
I use geth's verdict for the life drain and the fact that it is sure to grab something on the board, victim and dismember do not. Bitterblossom is really good against control decks and provide good chump blockers, as well as a secondary win condition in the long term.
Bitterblossom has been discussed pretty thoroughly in this thread. It provides a 1-card win condition in this deck because of the amount of disruption it is capable of. It's not always the best, so it can be sided out at worst. I have won many games with the card.
I used to use bad moons and go more all in on the card, and that was pretty good too. It depends on what you are looking to do with the deck. Some builds of the gate do not optimize it and might consider cutting it from the list...

Thanks for your reply, it is really helpful. Following your tips, I will either go gatekeeper/gifted aetherborn/persecutor or gifted aetherborn/nighthawk/obliterator. I can drop percy or obliterator to x3 in order to add a sword of light and shadow, but after testing, it came out too slow most of the time And by the time I have a finisher on board, I'm already in good position. I love the fact to have x8 deathoutch creature as well and a ton of life to counter balance thoughtseize, bitterblossom and bob. Gifted and nighthawk stall the board until I can drop my obliterator, those 3 have a Moat-like effet which I love. My ghost quarter allow me to trigger the revolt fatal push, that's why I don't run fetches, this and the life loss.
This is my build right now:
1x Arena
2x Bojuka Bog
3x Ghost Quarter
13x Swamp
3x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
I use geth's verdict for the life drain and the fact that it is sure to grab something on the board, victim and dismember do not.
Unless you are facing a hexproof creature (Bogles or a Geist) than VoN/Dismember will be better 90% of the time because they kill nearly everything that is played (Victim misses mainly Kalitas and G.Angler and Dismember gets everying besides P.Titan and Tron fatties) and you choose what dies when they have more than 1x creature.
1) We have things to sac: Bitterblossom Fae, Bloodghast, Dark Confidant, Abyssal Persecutor
2) Gains Life to help offset Dark Confidant and Bitterblossom.
3) 1cmc!

Modern Prison Pox - building a better plague
Dilemma!
I think you might have better luck doing the following:
+4 Bloodstained Mire (or any black fetch)
-4 swamp
+4 Fatal Push
-4 Tragic Slip
+1 Miren, the Moaning Well
-1 Arena
+4 Abyssal Persecutor
-4 Phyrexian Obliterator
-4 Vampire Nighthawk
+4 Gifted Aetherborn
I think the main switches here being Tragic Slip for Fatal Push (funny how similar the names are) and Obliterator for Persecutor will help the deck a lot.

Yahennis expertise in the side might also be a good thing to have access to

I wouldn't really call it "the gate" but it shares quite a few cards with the shell. It is more of a mono black pox deck, but I figured I would post it anyway in case you guys were curious where I was going to go with mono black and the new cards:
3x Bloodghast
3x Dark Confidant
1x Bitterblossom
1x Tombstalker
Spells (29):
4x Fatal Push
4x Inquisition of Kozilek
1x Raven's Crime
4x The Rack
4x Thoughtseize
2x Collective Brutality
4x Smallpox
4x Liliana of the Veil
2x Yahenni's Expertise
2x Ghost Quarter
3x Mutavault
11x Swamp
3x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4x Polluted Delta
3x Bloodchief Ascension
2x Pithing Needle
4x Leyline of the Void
6x unsure
This is more in the spirit of "The Gate" which I will also be trying:
4x Bloodghast
4x Dark Confidant
2x Gatekeeper of Malakir
2x Bitterblossom
2x Yahenni, Undying Partisan
3x Abyssal Persecutor
Spells (20):
4x Fatal Push
3x Inquisition of Kozilek
2x Thoughtseize
1x Collective Brutality
4x Smallpox
4x Liliana of the Veil
2x Yahenni's Expertise
3x Ghost Quarter
1x Miren, the Moaning Well
12x Swamp
3x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4x Polluted Delta
3x Bloodchief Ascension
2x Pithing Needle
4x Leyline of the Void
6x unsure

1x Arena
2x Bojuka Bog
3x Ghost Quarter
1x Shizo, Death's Storehouse
13x Swamp
3x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4x Dark Confidant
4x Gifted Aetherborn
3x Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4x Vampire Nighthawk
3x Bitterblossom
4x Fatal Push
4x Geth's Verdict
4x Inquisition of Kozilek
3x Thoughtseize
4x Liliana of the Veil
Would it be viable? no more life loss problem or recurring creatures at least! and the shizo land is there to make my kalitas trample-ish just like percy and obliterator. Arena is the flex spot, is can be replaced by anything relevant. I just love the kalitas engine effect, just like bitterblossom.
Do you expect to play against a lot of "Bogles" decks with hexproof creatures ?
Also without anthems and or faeries to support it Bitterblossom seems very mediocre here.

4x Dark Confidant
4x Gifted Aetherborn
4x Phyrexian Obliterator
4x Vampire Nighthawk
3x Bitterblossom
4x Fatal Push
4x Geth's Verdict
4x Inquisition of Kozilek
3x Thoughtseize
4x Liliana of the Veil
Thanks again for your feedback!
