I think I may know what you're thinking.
"Blistercoil Weird? I thought that was just some useless uncommon from RtR!" Well, you were wrong!
"But what can you do with it to make a playable deck?"
Here's a card you can look at!
Paradise Mantle!
"How does that help?"
Well, similar to the Type 1.5 (Legacy) deck Cheeri0s, this deck creates an infinite draw/storm engine! How? You equip your Paradise Mantle to your Blistercoil Weird, then you tap Weird. What do you use with that mana? Cantrips of course! You cast cantrips (low cost spells that draw you a card), getting a card and making Weird slightly stronger and ready for another use! You repeat the process until you can either attack for lethal, grapeshot for lethal, or both!
"That doesn't seem very consistent at all!"
Well, that's very true. But, like all combo decks, it is an issue with the deck. Speaking of issues, lets list the good and bad things! The Good!:thumbsup:
- It's a pretty budget deck!
- Definitely fun to play with!
- Not an overly annoying combo to play against.
- It's definitely tournament worthy, seeing as I've ran it to 1st multiple times at money tournaments, and have beaten Tier 1 decks with it, (I.E. Splinter Twin).
The Bad!:(
- As I said, it's not the most consistent deck ever.
- Dies to counterspells pretty easily, so beware of spell pierce!
- Dies to removal, similar to Splinter Twin.
The Ugly!:-/
- Blistercoil Weird doesn't have the prettiest art.
"That seems pretty cool, but what are the basics of the list?"
Good question! Here's the things that you absolutely need in the deck!
Blistercoil Weird and Paradise Mantle should be self-explanatory by now, but grapeshot may not. It basically allows you to still hit for lethal, even if you only got up to 9 storm. Manamorphose is extremely useful for filtering, and is also another cantrip. Cerulean Wisps may not be very explanatory, but I'll tell you why: it has an interesting interaction with Blistercoil that allows you to get double mana. How? Well, you tap Blistercoil for Cerulean Wisps, then put the triggers on the stack so that Blistercoil untaps from its ability, tap it for mana, then untap it from Cerulean Wisps effect, and tap Weird again, resulting in double mana. Gitaxian Probe and Peek are more cantrips, and allow you to play around counterspells and removal. Nonbasic lands are not required, but can help. Here's the list I use:
"Well, at least you have cantrips to dig for the missing combo pieces if necessary. But how does this deck do against other modern decks?"
Once again, good question. Just to answer that, using my list, I'll be playing some modern games and recording what happens. Game 1 vs. Splinter Twin Round 1
I lost the roll, then mulliganed a hand of all cantrips, keeping a hand consisting of: Island, Blistercoil Weird, Peek, Visions of Beyond, and Grapeshot. My opponent played a scalding tarn and passed, and I drew another visions, playing my island and Peeked at my opponents hand, seeing a Steam Vents, a Deceiver Exarch, a Pestermite, a Serum Visions, and a Kiki-Jiki. I drew the mantle I needed, then played it and passed. At the end of turn step, my opponent cracked his tarn for a steam vents tapped, then took his turn, on which he played his serum visions, putting both cards he scryed to the bottom, then played his steam vents tapped. I drew a mountain, playing it and my Blistercoil weird with mana from the mountain, and equipping my paradise mantle. My opponent drew, played an island, and passed. I drew a manamorphose, then went off, eventually Grapeshotting my opponent for 21, not giving them a chance to flash in a Deceiver Exarch or Pestermite to block with. Round 2
My opponent was on the play, and I kept a dream hand of an Island, a Blistercoil, a Paradise, a Grapeshot, and 3 cantrips. My opponent played an island and Serum Vision'd, scrying one to the bottom then passing. I drew another island, then played my Mantle, one of the islands, then the Weird. My opponent drew, then having no answer in hand and no ways to dig, my opponent extended the hand.
Game 2 vs. Jund Round 1
I went into this match knowing Jund was not a good matchup for me, seeing as it has so much removal to kill my weirds. I won the roll, and after mulliganing twice, kept a hand of a Steam Vents, Blistercoil, Paradise Mantle, and 2 Grapeshots. Turn one I played Vents into Blistercoil and my mantle, then passed. My opponent fetched a Blood Crypt, shocking them self and playing a Deathrite Shaman. I drew a Peek, then equipped the mantle and eventually managed to go off with a Cerulean Wisps interaction with Blistercoil followed by a grapeshot for 19. Round 2
My opponent was on the play, and I kept a hand of an Island, a Steam Vents, a Paradise Mantle, a Manamorphose, a Grapeshot, a Peek, and a Gitaxian Probe. My opponent played an Overgrown Tomb into a Deathrite Shaman. I drew another Manamorphose, then Gitaxian Probe'd, drawing my Paradise Mantle. I played my Island, following with a Blistercoil and the Mantle. My opponent extended the hand.
Now obviously the deck isn't that reliable, and I got really lucky with my draws in these examples, in fact these probably represent about 10-15% of times I play. But, hopefully this primer has at least made you think about testing it out. It's pretty fun, and often people prefer getting their face getting beaten in by a Blistercoil Weird to all their spells getting countered. So, have fun in your Weird Paradise! EDIT: Moved to established forum, seeing as this wasn't new at the time of posting.
Not a new deck, in fact when RtR came out, paradise mantles spiked above 6 tix on MTGO for a good while.
Regardless, youre missing 4 incredibly important cards in the deck. Serum Visions, Sleight of Hand, Visions of Beyond, and Faithless Looting. Also, Idea's unbound is incredibly potent on the combo turn. Finally, Crimson Wisps is good as a 2-4 of to help go off the turn you play Weird, if you have 3 mana.
Other options for the deck include Gelectrode for "weird redundancy" but I don't think it's necessary.
Sideboard 4x Apostles Blessing is almost mandatory for the removal heavy matcups, and dispel or quicken if you think countermagic will play a large part in the outcome of the match.
Edit: I just assumed from the above user's post that you didn't have/weren't aware of the 4 cards at the top of my post. I was mistaken
Good point @Tinfoil Hat, I'll move it to another subsection. Serum Visions and Sleight of Hand aren't as important as morphoses, ceruleans, and peek effects. They are usually part of peoples other cantrips. Crimson wisps is alright, but of course, as mentioned, requires 3 mana so if played it can be a part of the other cantrips. I didn't even think about Apostle's Blessing, once would probably take out the mizzium skins for Blessings.

Serum Visions is fairly crucial to help filter past lands, sleight of hand too, but it's slightly worse. Manamorphose isn't actually hyper important unless you're in dire need of three mana, otherwise its just another cantrip.

True, but serum visions is pretty expensive, not the best for people on a tight budget like myself. Sleight of hand is cheaper, but still a little on the expensive side for a cantrip. I think Manamorphose is important because of the fact that it gives you more mana and cantrips, which is good for when you don't have Blistercoil out because it lets you dig and cast duress without the mantle/blistercoil/both.

Serum Visions is a mere 50 cents more than Manamorphose. I understand the colorfixing aspect though, but Visions and Sleight are fairly crucial for the deck, especially when you don't have the combo already.
Regardless, I know the deck has far more potential than people credit it. You can even splash green for Utopia Vow as additional mantles, if your budget allows. Downside of that card is you need to find grapeshot to win, but that's not too much trouble.

May want to delete that thread, established and proven are for specific decks with certain results and metagame share.
While the deck idea is not new, the deck itself does not belong in established. Maybe we can earn its spot at a later date, but for now, it doesn't belong.

Niv-Mise-it is/was a totally different deck. While both are hyper fast combo decks, they have two completely separate routes to victory. The elemental combo deck is based around casting 3-5 cheap and/or free spells followed by ground rift, exiling most or all the spells to the elemental, then make it lethal with assault strobe and/or tainted strike.
This deck chains cantrips for "free", until it can cast a lethal grapeshot or attack for 17+ with weird.
Both decks aim to break the turn 4 rule, but due to the mass amounts of cantrips, in my opinion, this deck is more resiliant and consistent in its goal.

Ever think about running Kiln Fiend and Fling here? With all the spells, a 18-power Fiend could be tossed across the battlefield pretty easily.
Kiln Fiend and Fling could possibly be played in the deck, but will make the combo go blank much more easily. If you want to test with these, go ahead but I find risking hitting for 18 with a card(s) that will deaden my draws while going for hitting for more isn't worth it.

Fiend Fling is also very mana intensive, for the kill you need a minimum of 3 spells plus the fling, and without morphose/probe, thats 5 mana in a 15 or fewer land deck.

Expensive? I understand that $3.00 (current price on cardkingdom.com) is rather high for a common. If you want to build the best deck possible, price should not be a factor. If price is a factor, $3 for a card should not be out of the realm of possibility. I can see not wanting to spend $75 on Dark Confidant, or $150 on a Goyf, but to not spend $3 for a card that not only improves your deck, but is a core card of several other decks is baffling. Surely you have friends and something to trade?
They're basically useless. They force you to splash their colors if you want them to have some semblance of action without the combo, and they don't do enough for the combo to be played. Twisted Image and Psychotic Fury would be better than them, even if we had the extra room. Come to think of it though, Psychotic Fury could be really good in the noncreature/combo matchups as it sort of "draws" you like 10 cards, in that you only need to get blistercoil up to 9 or 10 power to kill.

The thing is most of the money I make goes into bills and whatnot, resulting in me really only allocating 20$ a paycheck to Magic. I of course have people to trade with, but cards that are a bit more expensive rarely show their face in a pack, having only ever opened 2 cards that people would probably want, so I don't really have the ability to get more expensive (3 or more dollars) cards.

I heard about a deck playing mister weird. It killed my friend in most stunning fashion and he was not happy about it. So now I know about it lol.
I've dabbled in Kiln fiend pauper, Cyclops standard, and Niv-Magus modern most recently. I don't see why this deck couldn't be next. I like piloting little decks like these. Especially if they are easily converted to pauper (eye candy :D)
It might take me awhile to want to make this however. The days of "Ok I'm combo'ing off, do you have the removal? Ok GG." decks.
But I might take and tweak this if I get free time.
