Next Month is looking kind of exciting... there are three consecutive weekends in nearby (within 3 hours drive of me) cities hosting modern SCG IQ's and they are on Sundays so easily made by someone like me who works every single Saturday.

Been having some good success with the Fast Slivers deck online and on paper. Going to Columbus this weekend for the SCG Open and I'll be rocking this list. Its done well for me the past few weeks. Should be a great time.
I can post a report later, but I'm not sure how I feel about this list anymore. I love Sedge Sliver so much, but I hate the inconsistency of Collected Company. The last Company I cast of the tournament in Round 9 Game 3 was 4 lands and 2 companies. I'm going to try the fast slivers list now and just hope for more slivers in Dominaria.
I really have been struggling against Tron decks, and man lands in general. Necrotic just doesn't cut it. Wondering about cutting 1 Mutavault for a Ghost Quarter. Maybe add a Pithing Needle to SB. Also thinking of working in a second Dismember for removal. Otherwise agree with those moving away from traditional slivers to fast slivers until we see if Dominaria helps us out. Would like a Fulminator Sliver! Comments welcome...

I like the Automaton a lot. Having 4 extra lords is important for speed of deck. Of course it is a nonbo with Harmonic Sliver so comes out in those matches. Chalice is mixed. I use it largely for combo decks (Storm, Ad Nauseum, Living End) plus Lantern, Affinity,Bogles, Infect and DS decks. I have used it on the play against burn. I have to admit I often would rather play 2 2-drop slivers against burn than Chalice for 2. But in late game it can stop burn dead as my experience shows they often hold bigger threats for late game (like Boros Charm). Overall I am still keeping it tho tempted to drop for a Pithing Needle and Grafdigger Cage. Sorry for format but posting from my phone.
Updating Some Results on MODO I've been playing fast slivers for the past week on MODO. I have played a total of 12 matches in the Tourney Practice Room as a warm up to enter a League which I hope to do next week. I played 9 matches using the list above in entry #1816, and played 3 Matches by changing the SB to -2 Chalice of the Void and +1Pithing Needle, +1 Grafdigger's Cage. Overall I have gone 9-3, including 2-1 over last 3 matches with different card configuration. I won 19 games over those matches and lost 10 (1 match was a 1-0 victory as the opponent lost first game and then quit). I didnt keep any info on sideboarding or the game action. I beat: Grixis Delver, Abzan, 4-Color Burning Vengeance, Mono-U Spirits, Grixis Control, Jund, Affinity, Mono-U Delver, Burn. I lost to Tron, Grixis Thing in the Ice, The Rock. Overall the deck is a lot of fun and I always felt in the match (except for Thing in the Ice). Overall, I am still not sure about playing the Chalices or the Needle/Cage. I seemed to draw them each match when I needed them (for instance I wasn't missing Chalices my last 3 matches. Thoughts welcome.
Played a 32 person FNM last night and had very good results. Went back to traditional slivers for the event and the decision paid dividends.
5 rounds - 4-0-1 match record
Round 1 - Jeskai control, 2-1. Turn 1 cavern and vial into turn 2 Diffusion spelled a bad game for the opponent. Opponent simply could not answer enough in game 1 and I over ran him by turn 5. Game 2, brought in Hivelord, 2 Frenetic, relic from SB. Failed to see the Diffusion or any SB cards and was swept off the board a few times and led to a situation where I was top decking. Game 3, no further side changes, Started strong with cavern and vial into Diffusion again, turn 3 CoCo into a Blur and a lord sent a substantial amount of damage at the opponent who folded a couple turns later.
Round 2 - GB Elves, 2-1. Won the die roll and won the match, thats just how this match up happens. Game 1 was able to turn 3 CoCo into a Blur and Lord again and swing big with flyers. SB: +2 Syphon +2 Wail. Saw the Syphon in game 2 but it want enough to stall the opponent who dumped his hand on turn 3 and found an Ezuri and 3 Archdruids... Game 3 was not very exciting, opponent kept a 1 lander with a mana dork but didnt =see land 2 until turn 4 when it was all but over.
Round 3 - Jeskai Queller, 2-1. This seemed like path.deck. I had an idea of what this guy was on because I'd seen him playing earlier, I had to mulligan my first hand due to lack of lands but it turned out to be good, I found a Cavern and Diffusion in my 6, kept. Dropped the Diffusion turn 2 and proceeded to get pretty well set up while losing 1 or 2 guys along the way to paths but eventually got there with multiple Sedge's. SB: +1 Hivelord, +2 Frenetic, +1 Relic. Game 2 wasnt as much in my favor, no Diffusion, it felt like he cast 7 paths this game as well, I eventually got to where I cycled for the hivelord and cast it, it met another path after his untap, Collonade and queller beat downs insued. Game 3, Cavern into Diffusion into Diffusion... real good. I saw my first ever 5 mana Path cast. I turn 4 CoCo'd into a Blur and Sedge, it was all over but the singing at that point.
Round 4 - mono U Living end, 2-0. I got a peak at this guy playing earlier in the night and was kind of unsure of the match up. Luckily for me, I found Darkheart Sliver both games very early in the games. Game 1, opponent cycles several cards and on turn 3 casts living end off as foretold for free, in response I sac my board which was only 2 slivers and gained 6 life, all of out creatures came back. He had 2 4/4 fliers, 2 5/5 hexproof, and another creature on the ground against my 2/2 darkheart and 1/1 manaweft. Coco was my friend again finding me a Blur and a Sedge, however no swamp, cast a galerider activated mutavault and swung in since his fliers were tapped from attacking the turn prior. Opponent attempts to Field of Ruin the mutavault... I sac it to gain 3 and fetch a swamp to activate Sedge for enough damage to kill. SB: +2 Mindlash +2 Frenetic +1 Relic. Turns out I didnt need any sideboard cards... turn 3 CoCo into Blur and Predatory and swung for 10. One more turn is all it took.
Round 5 - ID. Didnt see what the guy was on but did watch him play a little and he had an Emrakul, the Promised End on field... Spicy.
8-3 game record
4-0-1 match record
I ran 1 Homing main instead of the Striking I had been running, it only showed up one all night vs the Jeskai Queller and it only led to the Hivelord getting pathed. I have had the Mindlash's in side for 3 weeks now and simply have not been able to use them, they just dont seem necessary in my local meta at the moment. Going to do some research and try a few thing it their place soon.
@ekeinhol, great results! I would think about maybe another Relic, or Striking Slivers or Automaton. Looking forward to seeing how things go with fast slivers at next big event.
On Fast Slivers. I would welcome people's thoughts on success/failures in using Vials. I have gone Timba's route without them and have been happy with the speed in dropping a creature turn 1 instead of the vial. I know you make it up by turn 3, but often with fast slivers I get a lot of 1 drops so Vial seems not as fast. However, the surprise factor with Vial or pump with a Lord to save a sliver from Bolt is always relevant, or to mess up combat math. I also like the creature density - playing 35 creatures is often necessary when opponent packs a lot of removal. Thoughts?
Frenetic Sliver is a card that I always like to have on mainboard.
The reason is because there is a lot of global removal, or target removal. In both cases, if the sliver is going to die, at least you got 50% chances to save it, otherwise, it's going to be dead anyways.
I remember the look of incredulity of my opponent when my slivers got saved like 6 or 7 times in a row thanks to it, was pretty fun. It made me won some matches this little guy.
I'm tempted bySedge Sliver or Adaptive Automaton, I just worry about trying to build a five-color manbase that would still support Sedge (I've seen a few, but I don't feel confident in them). Automaton I could just slot in, but I'm not sure what to pull.
I'm pretty unsure about the landbase in general. There's tons of Blood Moon here so I'd like to include some fetches and up the basic count.
Alright guys. I've had my eye on Slivers for a very long time now, in fact they are probably the main reason why I started playing Magic in the first place (them and Kavu oddly enough. I've been playing G/W Slivers in Pauper and am thinking of switching off of B/W Tokens and picking up Slivers in modern. I have most of the pieces minus the Caverns and Vials but I might just proxy the deck and see how things go. I had a few questions about some of the slivers though.
What exactly is the purpose of Cautery Sliver? I for the life of me don't understand.
Is it viable to run at least one Sliver Legion in the main? Or is he just a win-more card in Modern?
1. Infect or creature combo. You kill their creatures.
2. It's very win more. It usually gets pathed immediately.
3. It's good, but dosen't effect the board immediately. The other lords just do more damage over the game.
4. Scapeshift
5. It is has much more toolbox capabilities than any other tribe.
6. Yes, it is really good. It can win you the blood moon games.
7. Counter scapeshift, all is dust, wrath, and damnation
Warping Wail can counter all relevant sorceries including Past in Flames, Scapeshift, All is Dust, and Damnation. It is also relevant for cards like Devoted Druid, Infect's creatures, and other important combo pieces. It is fine in Scapeshift matches and Storm to name a few.
You might want Verdant Catacombs rather than Marsh Flats to find the lone Forest when you need to. It is surprisingly relevant. Homing Sliver is relevant against blood moon, but ultimately more of a sideboard card I think. Slivers are a toolbox, but ultimately a toolbox that doesn't win you the game. We have a ton of keywords which can be, but not always relevant. We are better in creature combat then other tribes and can handle a lot of surprising situations due to the nature of keywords at least in the CoCo/Vial versions. We can grind and race.
Our worse matchups are Combo matchups whether creature or non-creature based. We can be built to beat control/aggro although they might be different. We are a total dog to control though any control. I can beat and have beaten control, but Storm is probably the worst top matchup although most of the top decks are pretty good against us. We can beat them, but I am not sure we are favored to beat them.
We are a bit like merfolk and elves mixed. We go wider and can be faster than merfolk. The issue is the lack of board interaction which sets us back. We are on the whole better at reacting/defending to an existing board and the actions of our opponent, but we stink at actually interacting with our opponent either on their board or in the stack. It is our weakeness. We are better defensively with Sedge Sliver, Diffusion Sliver, and Frenetic Sliver. we can gain a ton of life. We can't stop spells on the stack nor interact with their creatures well like Harbinger of the Tides or Reflector Mage can. We are also not as fast or swarmy as Elves, nor can we toolkit to shut down a strategy or run thoughtseizes like Elves can.
So I think Slivers is in that awkward aggro/midrange spot that can't actually play that game. We can win because all of our creatures buff each other and we can be fast enough and protect ourselves enough. However, Slivers is a goldfish deck that can "interact" only in defensive, but interesting ways. We can grind or race.
A side note for Cautery Sliver... it can also serve as a finisher in ensnaring bridge match ups like lantern control. Get them low enough on life before the bridge comes down then throw your board at them 1 damage at a time.
February has come, I've got a busy month ahead. Pauper event next Saturday in Little Rock, Modern IQ in Kansas City the next weekend (18th), Modern IQ in Kansas City again the week after (25th), then 2 weeks after that is the SCG Dallas open. I am locked in to play Traditional CoCo/Vial during the modern events, its simply the list I'm best with at this point. Not saying anything bad about fast slivers, it just hasn't provided me the results and doesn't quite fit my style. If I play any side events at SCG Dallas I might try fast slivers then, I keep the modifications sleeved up in the same color sleeves as CoCo list in order to make switching quick and simple.
There is another IQ in Kansas City on the 11th, but I wont be able to make due to a prior obligation. I really could have had 3 straight weekend trips to KC in a row had it worked out a little better.
Any suggestions for edits? I dont run any Striking Sliver in my 75, have a 1 of Homing Sliver in main right now. I cut 2 Mindlash Sliver from my board recently because I never brought them in locally.
I have been focusing on Dinosaurs in standard and haven't been playing any modern. I am looking forward to Dominaria and hope slivers are represented well.
