Sounds like you played a very nice tournament! How has Striking Sliver performed for you? I am currently playing your list, with a few sideboard tweaks. I feel Striking Sliver is a card that really rewards skill; you have to be careful to play around removal/harbinger of the tides etc or risk massive blowouts in combat. But if playing around those cards accordingly he can dominate the field even against Goyfs and co. So would love to hear your experiences here.
EDIT: Again my phone autologs in on my Twitch. Im Rymesyt.
Edit2: I wonder how a budget sliver deck would pan out. Cavern of Souls abd Aether Vial are pretty expensive and not sure if the manabase works without those. I always advise Merfolk as a budget competitive deck since apart from Vials that deck is very cheap and it loses little from replacing Caverns with Islands. But thats a different discussion ofc.
You can use city of brass, ancient zug, or mana confluence for a budget deck. Yes they have draw backs and don't gain uncounterable but its way cheaper and at least lets you cast sliver spells.
Just go back a few pages, there is a list called fast slivers that is quite a bit cheaper than coco/vial slivers. I tried it out for a tournament and went 2-2 on my first try. Even got a turn 3 poison win, so its actually decent. T1 Virulent Sliver, t2 galerider, virulent, swing 1, 2 poison, t3 virulent, swing 3, 9 more poison.
Striking Sliver is great when I see it. Since I only run 1 copy its not always seen but when I do it's valuable. To the blowout potential, its possible if you are careless to get blown out but its more likely that if you bring it in via vial you cause a blow out.
On a sidenote, does anyone else have problems launching Magic the Gathering online? Never had any problems, but the last few days I have had multiple moments where I try to log in and it loads forever then tells me it has connection issues. I can play any other online game (and obv post on the forums) but not mtgo. At other times it runs fine. Was wondering if this was just happening to me?
In any case, I have been playtesting a lot trying multiple lists, and I ended up with your list with a few twists that are mostly metagame calls. I think the list you (ekienhol) play is the best one we currently got, so thanks alot for brewing! I removed 1 dismember and added a sentinel sliver as I need a little more power (with easy casting cost) to race the many fast aggro decks Im expecting, so an extra sliver is nice. Against decks like Death's Shadow, Naya Burn etc. I find it nicer to just get more presence on the board instead of paying life to destroy one of their creatures (especially since Death's Shadow can play around it so easily). Against these decks, I also like topdecking any sliver over dismember in most cases and it ups your collected company chances. Still got an extra Dismember in the side for those decks where you really want to draw it. Also traded 1 Darkhheart for a Syphon mainboard. Going to play a pretty cool tournament with a lot of players, so hoping to represent this deck in style. Mind you, these are meta calls, Im not in any way suggesting this is superior. Actually when going into a tournament where I have no clue what people would be playing I'd bring the list on your tappedout.
Let me know how it works out, I'm always open to making changes. I have been wanting to get a copy of Sentinel Sliver back into the main but havent made the move yet.
Looks like I'll be testing in earnest now, I have set up a trip to Kansas City for the SCG IQ there on 5/13. Going to test out this list with Dismember in the side on my next chance.
Ran the Dismembers in the side, 4 diffusions main, 1 Sentinel main, ran 1 and 1 main and side of Darkheart and Syphon, and removed Gut Shot from the 75.
Round 1 - Abzan, 1-2. Game 1 could not handle triple Hierarch into lingering souls, exalted his way to victory. Game 2, was able to beat down lose control and stabilize to swing it back in my favor, helps he messed up and fatally pushed the wrong creature. Game 3, could not overcome a turn 2 Liliana of the veil.
Round 2 - Goryo's Vengeance, 1-2. Came out strong and fast in game 1 and got there with little interaction from my opponent. Game 2 the glass canon went off, Faithlessly looted pitched Emrakul and in response to the trigger to shuffle Goryo's to bring it into play with haste. Game 3, kept an extremely greedy 1 land hand after mulling to 6, scried a land to the top, got to a point on turn 3 where I have 2 Hives and a cavern in play and I draw Sedge for the turn, he plays Blood Moon on his turn 3 which kills my momentum, my next draw was Manaweft. I was holding a Telekinetic in game 3 and just needed to drawthe Manaweft before the Sedge, had that happened I could have locked him out of the game because I also had Sentinel in play. Got Emrakul'd again but survived the hit only to be beaten by a 1/1 simian spirit guide due to his -1/-1 to all creatures enchantment.
Round 3 - Mono Green Elves, 1-2. Game 1 had everything I wanted and needed, got flying, couple lords, lifelink... Simply was able to allow his attacks to hit and gain back the life, easy win. Game 2, made a stupid mistake on turn 1 that really cost me. Had an Aether Vial in hand and lost my mind for a moment and said land go on turn 1, ended up not dropping the vial and losing due to not getting board presence fast enough. Game 3, took a chance with a 1 lander with 2 Aether Vials, it didnt pan out. Got hit for 37 with trample on turn 4 thru a double activation of Ezuri.
Round 4 - Jund Death's Shadow, 2-1. Very fun match, each game was right down to the wire. Game 1, did slivery thing and nearly got there, left him at 4 when he was able to finish me off. Game 2, kept a hand of 5 lands a galerider and a darkheart, turned out really well since he cant make me discard lands. Was able to draw threats and eventually got wide and flew over. Game 3 was intense!!! I mulled to 6, keeping 4 lands and 2 slivers. I again was able to stick around and eventually get wide, but I stalled out. Got to where I had 2 darkhearts, manaweft, galerider and mutavault in play and opponent with 3 death's shadows and a goyf and he was at 7 and me at 9. Made a few tokens with hive to block and sac to gain life and was holding him off top decking the whole time hoping for a miracle. Had to eventually block with both darkhearts and sac both to stay at 3 life. "Heart of the cards" top decked a CoCo, landed a Sedge and a Galerider and was able to activate Mutavault to swing for the finisher.
So after all that, I have decided to go back on all the changes I made before playing except 1. I am putting Dismember back in main, cutting back to 3 Diffusions, removing the Sentinel (will try to find another way to play it),going back to 2 darkheart main and 2 syphon side, but I will keep the Gut Shots out and replace them with Relic of Progenitus. Its has much better applications than Gut Shot which was kind of my bullet for Infect and CoCo combos. Will chalk this one up to changes made and move on, got 2 more FNM'sbefore the IQ in KC.
First of all, Ekienhol thanks as always for your report! I really think reports like this are adding the most to the deck discussion. That game 3 against Death's Shadow is why we play, amazing!
I think Surgical is a great card; it can really do a number on certain combo decks (especially Gifts Ungiven builds) which we are weak against. In the end I'd say it's a meta call. I decided that combo is a very weak match for me regardless and decided to hope to dodge it mostly; we do not have the control cards in the side that merfolk have and our best option is to race them anyway. Against Snapcaster, I prefer Relic as it catches more random cards (it's also great against Death's Shadow for example). However, if your meta has a lot of combo or other decks that Extraction is great against (as you mentioned, Goryo, Dredge) then it's a very viable sideboard card by any means.
I did great with my list, ending up winning a relatively serious modern tournament. Will write a full tournament report when I got more time, but I really want to point out that this does not by any means mean my list has more value now. I made changes in my list specifically for the meta I expected and it paid off. In a normal meta, I would agree to keep 2 Dismember in the mainboard. I really love Sentinel Sliver by the way. Im considering adding a second. I tried running Cautery Sliver, Venom Sliver etc in the main and at times all of them were really great, but other times when I drew them I wished I got another sliver instead. I never had that with Sentinel. In the best case, it was a great combination with my other slivers. In the worst case, it was still a bigger body than most of my other slivers which turned out to be really relevant against cards like Tarmogoyf and Death's Shadow. Yes, Cautery Sliver and co also have that 2/2 body, but a more awkward casting cost makes them stuck in your hand more often. Vigilance is also really strong in a meta where little creature aggrodecks are running rampant (which might not be every meta). Putting pressure on Burn, Zoo and Merfolk while still holding the fort slowing their attacks down is great. In the end though, I would advocate the biggest advantage of Sentinel is his 2/2 body for an easy casting cost, helping you get more power on the board to close down games a bit faster winning the race against other aggro decks.
3 or 4 diffusion again is a meta call I think. I face so much burn/zoo/jund/death's shadow that every chance to slow their removal is worth it. Sometimes I got 2 or even 3 diffusion on the board and they just sit there with a hand full of dead cards. Even when only having 1, making them tap out on turn 3 for that fatal push buys a turn. I totally understand the desire to cut back from 4 though, as in many other matchups they don't do anything and are a 1/1 body for 2 mana which is a terrible deal. As much as I loved this card in many matches, I also found this one to be the first I'd side out against many others. Again, I would say this is a meta dependant call. If only Crystalline Sliver would be reprinted...
EDIT: Some questions I had but forgot to post earlier:
-Did you find yourself boarding in Dismember alot?
-How did you sideboard against Death's Shadow and Goryo's Vengeance?
Against Death's shadow, I brought in 7 cards from the side: Homing, Venom, 2 Dismember, Hivelord, Syphon, Darkheart; all came in.
Against Goyo's vengeance, I only brought in 2 cards: Homing and Telekinetic; may have been a mistake to leave Harmonic in side due to blood moons but figured a Necrotic could handle it.
The only match I didnt bring Dismember in for was against Goryo's Vengeance.
The Death's Shadow match was against a good friend, he's been much better than I for most of our matches however the last 3 times he's played me he hasnt gotten the win and thats satisfying knowing he's playing top tier decks and is a level 1 judge and cant get past my slivers.
The more I think about it, I kind of use Dismember in the same role as a Necrotic Sliver however Necrotic being much slower. Those running mainboard Dismember, have you tried a Necrotic-less list?
I have never used a necrotic-less list. I think it provides protection for a variety of permanents. I have won games because I killed specific utility lands, enchantments, artifacts, planeswalkers etc. It is slow, but absolutely necessary in longer grindier matches that we could face. It is less useful against aggro than the 2/2 body for 3, but it is absolutely crucial for non-aggro matchups.
Agreed, especially after tonights event...
Monday Night Modern, an endulgence I have been unable to partake due to other commitments... Until tonight.
13 players - 2-2 9th place
Round 1 - Infect 2-1. Came out of the gate kind of sideways with not a very quick hand. Turned out to be my downfall. I did dismember his elf on turn 2 in response to a might of old krosa, but ended up dieing to a pumped up agent on turn 4. Games 2 and 3 I saw side board stuff, Cautery was the key. Game 2, he kept a hand with only 1 creature and didnt find another after I killed it with Cautery. Game 3, he killed my Vial with a corrupter but it simply was not enough. He pinged himself to 1 life with a pain land and I had Cautery on board and a mana available.
Round 2 - Bant Eldrazi 1-2. Came out strong in this match, he saw no removal (path) and I flew over for victory. Game 2, tight fought match. Died on a mistake. We both had pretty good board state and both of us were low on life but not low enough for an alpha strike to succeed. He casts Worship. This ended up being the end for me. I started digging to find an answer... Found what I thought was THE answer, Cautery in play, top decked Venom. Cast it, had 5 other slivers in play. Started tapping them for mana to sac them and kill his eldrazi, bad thing was he blinked the drowner and was able to keep 3 creatures. I also mistapped and could have played the striking sliver in my hand, this was my mistake because Venom and Cautery were left in play. I really needed necrotic here. Game 3, I just could not get off the block, paths were everywhere and since I boarded out the diffusions there was no protection.
Round 3 - Jeskai Control 0-2. Played extremely patiently in game 1 because I knew what this guy was playing; however, I played too patiently. I passed up 3 opportunities to get lords into play early and get damage thru holding up coco mana. I eventually resolved 2 cocos in this game, got to a point where he was one swing away from death and he board wiped, verdict. He stabilized at 2 life. Game 2 was bad luck. Sided in frenetics and lost every single coin flip. Didnt get to keep anything on board long.
***rules question*** say in play are a frenetic and darkheart sliver, you lose the coin flip, can you in response sac to gain 3 life?
Round 4 - Naya Zoo 2-1. Boy this felt like a blast from the past... Kird apes, wild nacatls, fleecemane lions. Won the die roll, won game one. T1 vial, T2 predatory, T3 vial in predatory cast blur swing 7, T4 cast striking cast darkheart swing win. Game 2, got victimized by a path, was matching him creature for creature then suddenly a path, lost game 2. Game 3 was much like game 1, got wide and large quickly.
I did get to side in the relics I added to the side board against the Jeskai player. Problem was I saw both of them when I really needed another answer. I'll keep them in side and hope for better luck. I am thinking about going up to 2 venom in side and adding a striking to side. The interaction of Venom and Striking and Venom and Cautery is powerful. I also want to find a way to get Sentinel back into the deck but that is on the back burner.
***rules question*** say in play are a frenetic and darkheart sliver, you lose the coin flip, can you in response sac to gain 3 life?
I ran into this question the other day and came to the conclusion that the coin flip is you resolving the ability, so you can't respond to the success/fail of the flip.
That is correct. Frenetic Sliver has an activated ability (cost : effect). If you pay the cost of 0, then the effect goes on the stack. When the effect resolves, you must do the entire part after the colon. You can't "interrupt" it because you lost the flip.
Also, I didn't read through 59 pages of text, but I read through a few. I see a lot of people playing 4 Manaweft Sliver and 0 Gemhide Sliver. I personally play 3 and 2 total, but if you are playing just 4, shouldn't you split 2-2?
Sure, Manaweft is better than Gemhide because it gives your opponets' slivers mana abilities, but what opposing slivers are you going to run into? Mutavault is about all I can think of. Changling creatures?
Manaweft is strictly better than Gemhide, but those cards that you mentioned are generally just as rare as issues that come up with gemhide sliver. Maelstrom pulse is a 1 of in most lists and they will probably target lords, galerider, or other card as manaweft is less a threat to those style decks.
I don't know if there is any reason other than personal preference. If it has worked for you, go for it. I encourage you to continue to try and report back the results. Have you been victim to those spells before?
You are absolutely correct that they will normally target lords first. Mana slivers are probably among the least targeted creatures in the deck.
Granted, this is a pretty rare situation, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I think we are definitely more likely to play against one of those cards mentioned than to play against an opposing Sliver/Changling. I have played against all 5 of those cards I've mentioned in Modern before. I did have one game where my opposition targeted my mana sliver just because I didn't have a fetchland yet for green mana and Collected Company.
I have experienced a much different situation. My local meta knows the deck I play because I've been playing it for so long, when a manaweft comes down its usually the first thing they remove even over lords. That may speak to my play style more than strategy but thats what I have experienced.
I don't know if has been debated here, but, what about Vizier of the menagerie. Even thought it's not s sliver, it can be a really nice threat to take care, as we can cast any of our slivers without caring much about mana from our hands and top deck.

4 Galerider Sliver
4 Manaweft Sliver
2 Blur Sliver
4 Diffusion Sliver
2 Necrotic Sliver
1 Syphon Sliver
1 Darkheart Sliver
1 Sentinel Sliver
1 Striking Sliver
1 Homing Sliver
1 Telekinetic Sliver

2 Relic of Progenitus
1 Venom Sliver
1 Cautery Sliver
2 Dismember
Wish me luck! Will write up a report regardless of how well it goes, but it's more fun to write about wins
A one of removal spell is rather lackluster compared to increasing the chance of pulling a darkheart, or blur, or diffusion, etc.
A 2 of removal spell I could understand. but a one of, is just a waste of space. (once again, just my 2 cents. )

I ran into this question the other day and came to the conclusion that the coin flip is you resolving the ability, so you can't respond to the success/fail of the flip.
I think a bigger issue is you might play against Maelstrom Pulse, and too a lesser extent, maybe Reflector Mage, Bile Blight, Detention Sphere, or Declaration in Stone.
I don't know if there is any reason other than personal preference. If it has worked for you, go for it. I encourage you to continue to try and report back the results. Have you been victim to those spells before?
I'll be playing again tonight.
