Paladin aside, what are people's thought on running Collected Company in place of Aether Vial? Had to sell my Vials a while back and won't be able to get them again for a good while.
I do not find Collected Company to be a direct replacement for Aether Vial. You would use Collected Company as a supplement to Vials.
Having said that, I don't use Aether Vial in my deck. As a result, my deck is less about shenanigans and more about aggro.
Hello guys, I have been thinking on move my knights to GW from W, but so far I am unimpressed with Knight of Reliquary (that or my meta its fairly trigger happy). Anyways I have been thinking in change my paths to Valorous stance, and open for 3 brave the elements (at work so I don't have a list).
Can anyone point me to good cards on green variant?.
Green's best Knight is Knight of Reliquary combined with Horizon Canopy and Fetchlands. If you don't have the lands, then Knight of Reliquary is underwhelming. If you do, you get to a 4/4 or 5/5 Knight pretty quickly. If you want to go to 4 mana, Wilt-Leaf Liege is now popular as a counter to Liliana of the Veil and other discard-based decks in the meta.
Green's best spell addition is arguably Rancor (as a 1-of or 2-of) to get Knight of Reliquary pushed through.
Dromoka's Command is hot right now, but I would likely wait until after it rotates out before picking up any.
Path to Exile is still valuable in many white-based decks for extremely cheap creature removal, so I would keep that as a 4-of. Valorous Stance is debatable, as I think Brave the Elements is better. Even Dromoka's Command might be better. Running Thalia pretty much means you have to stick to low-mana spells like Brave the Elements, Path to Exile, and Rancor.
Round 1: R/U Splinter Twin (2-0) Game 1 he never finds a Splinter Twin, and has to chump my Lightning Greaves'd Mirran Crusader with three Deciever Exarch and a Pestermite. Greaves won me the game, as it turned out he had Vedalken Shackles. I had an Elspeth, Knight-Errant on the field, but she never got above 5 loyalty, due to not having a target, and not wanting to give him blockers. Game 2 he keeps a greedy hand, and doesn't find a second land off of his Serum Visions. Easy beatdown.
Round 2: U/W Tokens/Polymorph (2-0) Game 1 he leads with two token generating spells, and I have no clue what I'm facing until he Polymorphs a token. Luckily, I have Path to Exile ready, and he never gets to poly anything in. Game 2 he gets a ton of tokens and an Intangible Virtue, but I have Disenchant ready, and beat him down before he can activate his Proteus Staff.
Round 3: U/W Eternal Dominion (2-0) Game 1 he gets T1 Lotus Bloom, but isn't doing much other stuff. I get Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, and a few knights out. He taps out to cast Meishin, the Mind Cage, but I have Mana Tithe up, and he scoops. Game 2 he mulls to five, and get double Lotus Bloom, but never finds anything to ramp into, and I finish the game by turn five.
Round 6: Affinity (2-1) Game 1 he has a slow start, and I have double Path to Exile for his Arcbound Ravager and Inkmoth Nexus. Game 2 he Thoughtseizes me, and takes my Knight Exemplar over my Æther Vial, which is probably a mistake. He casts Steel Overseer, but I topdeck Path to Exile. He gets another one, and I topdeck another Path (He was a bit salty). I should probably have saved that path though, as a Cranial Plating'd nexus gets me over two turns. Game 3 I get a Disenchant for his Plating, and topdeck Kataki, War's Wage on turn 4, while he only has two lands, one of which is a Darksteel Citadel. He looks at his hand, jokingly offers a draw, then scoops, putting me into the top 5 and prizes!
Overall a very fun night, I won a lot of bad matchups, largely due to RNG though (A lot of Mana Screws on the other side, and a lot of Æther Vials drawn on my side). Mana Tithe did something every time I had it, so I'm planning to add 1-2 more. Disenchant was probably the MVP of the night, as I sided it in in pretty much every matchup. Didn't draw Wilt-Leaf Liege, but I'm planning to replace the Hero of Bladeholds, if my meta becomes more Abzan dominated. Probably adding another Thalia, Guardian of Thraben to the MB over a Knight of Meadowgrain, as I feel like the card simply doesn't do enough in non-aggro matchups, which I am mostly favored in anyways. Still looking for Stony Silences to the sideboard... Although I did get to trade for some pretty sweet stuff for the commander deck.
They left out the part where Yawgmoth is resurrected, but has been cleansed as Yawgmoth the Redeemed, and now must awaken Chromium so that Karn can fuse with him and create what can only be known as : the ultimate taco.
mana tithe really puts a hurtin on their coronet. Every time it gets played opponent is like damn. congrats on the wins. Let us know what your updated list looks like
EDIT. also how does thalia do with the amount of noncreature spell that you have
EDIT. also how does thalia do with the amount of noncreature spell that you have
Thalia is sort of a double edged sword. Luckily, most of my meta is more non-creature heavy than I am (See the matchups I had), which is why I can justify playing her. Æther Vial comes out before her, and Path to Exile is usualy not a problem. Sometimes she'll block off Elspeth, Knight-Errant or a sword, but in those cases, I'm usualy winning anyways, because I'm sticking a Thalia. In my meta, she's definitely worth a maindeck inclusion.
As for the updated list, I'm thinking of splashing green, but currently don't have the lands to do so. I'm usualy making small changes from week to week, to see how an individual card performs. I'll try to keep you guys updated.

What would folks think of a blue splash for phantasmal image to double up knight exemplar? I'm mulling over an esper knight build that is admittedly more midrange with dual lords, haakon, and glen elendra liege.

I stick with mono-W and just use Phyrexian Metamorph as extra copies of Knight Exemplar that doesn't die as easily. Bonus points for serving as extra equipment and helping to turn on metalcraft if I am in the mood to run my Puresteel Paladin version of the deck.
I remembered Phyrexian Metamorph a while after my first post. Great idea. I really like the interaction between Haakon and Nameless Inversion, and am trying to figure a good way to get that in the mix. Glen Elendra Liege isn't going to be good without more black knights, so it's probably out. Yeah, I think this will lean toward WB with a smidge of blue for metamorph. We'll see how it goes. Now to go out and pick up some exemplars.

I have tried to balance my sideboard to be able to compete (Try at least) the UrzaTron, Affinity and Burn decks.
Be aware that I have been following this thread for a bit and I might have taken some ideas.

You probably need more lands. For a creature-heavy build with Vial, I recommend ~20.
With the high amount of creatures you're running, you could try Collected Company. I haven't playtested it yet, but it looks like it could be sweet.
If you find yourself playing against a lot of burn, 4x Leyline may be better. While I've found that Kataki does work against affinity, I think Stony Silence is simply just the best card in the match up. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is a card I wouldn't leave home without. It simply just slows various control/tempo/noncreature heavy decks down so much.
Perhaps reconsider your 2-drops. I don't know how well Skyhunter or Holy Nimbus is working out for you, but in a burn-heavy meta, I'd run 4x Knight of Meadowgrain, and with few lands and Vial, I'd also run 4x Knight of the White Orchid. Linvala seems out of place.
Since you're running Knight of the Reliquary, you could consider replacing a Rest in Peace with a Bojuka Bog. Finally, if you ever find yourself facing a lot of twin/infect/bogles, Spellskite is a really good sideboard.

We ever discussed earlier about forming a UWB Esper Knights, utilising cards such as Forbidden Alchemy, Haakon, Stromgald Scourge and the U knight - Court Hussar. Since Knights is generally a mid-range aggro deck, I think there is a good chance this concept might be workable, especially since we can afford to have a more fragile manabase in Modern compared to Legacy. We can also tap on lifelink from Knights of Meadowgrain to set ourself up for the Hakkon recursion engine.
Below is a preliminary list which I have come out with, might looks a little haphazard (I don't know why whenever I see Forbidden Alchemy it feels like seeing Standard's Solar Flare deck.
Haakon, Stromgald Scourge - the darth knight lord. The Haakon Recursion engine. Works totally insane with Knights and Namesless Inversion. 3 is enough since we have a full playset of Forbidden Alchemy to dig for him. And that's not even counting the flashback.
Court Hussar - Helps to dig for Forbidden Alchemy, does card filtering and also provide another card advantage as a one for one. Can also be part of the recursion engine with Haakon as a knight. Recursion with Haakon wil generate insane card advantage and card quality.
Forbidden Alchemy - I didn't know Haakon was an alchemist. By casting it, we can keep the card we need in our hand while throwing all the knights into the graveyard(including Haakon) and soon we'll start casting everything from the graveyard YEAH!!!
Mirran Crusader, Paladin en-Vec, Stillmoon Cavalier, Stromgald Crusader - the singleton knights are there so that we can choose the most relevant knights to cast when Haakon is in play. Forbidden Alchemy and Court Hussar will filter for us the appropriate knights either to cast from hand or throw into the graveyard).
Knight of Meadowgrain - Life is a premium here, with the shocks and fetches pinging us. We also need time to setup the Haakon Recursion engine - not to mention Haakon dying will cost us 2 life point everytime he hits the graveyard from the battlefield.
The Manabase looks scary. Definitely need to playtest to find the right mix here.
With the new fetches, the mana base should be a lot smoother. I would like to see this Esper Knight build with Æther Vial, most of your knights cost 3 plus you don't have to always cast Haakon from the graveyard.

Yes, Absolutely, I used to have difficulties trying to get a less painful yet efficient manabase back then when we only had Zendikar fetches.
What I like about Esper Knights is the deck approach to a game. We can be potent both from a normal knights aggro route, or by graveyard recursion. As usual, the tradeoff is a lack of focus as a result, however I do feel due to the synergy between the cards, this deck tend to reduce that to a minimum.
From Mark Rosewater's post today, protection has been downgraded from an evergreen keyword to a keyword that will be used more selectively. It won't appear in every set. Since many of the stronger knights had protection, this will somewhat hurt the Knights deck as we won't have as many sources of protection-based knights in the future.
First off, I just wanted to stop by and thank everyone who has contributed to this primer; I've been wanting to get into Modern but I'm not someone who just wants to copy a Tier 1 net-deck, so I figured I'd give this deck a try. I built this deck and got to use it in some side events at GP Charlotte (along with numerous practice matches in MTGO). This is currently the list I'm running:
- I had a single Light from Within in place of the 2nd Elspeth, Knight-Errant. I quickly realized that Elspeth, Knight-Errant is a strictly better 4-drop; she is good in any type of board state. Light from Within is really only good with several creatures on-board and protected, which isn't going to happen often. Especially at 4cmc, we need something robust and versatile. Wilt-Leaf Liege stays as a 1-of because an extra anthem affect attached to a 4/4 body is certainly welcome here.
- Speaking of which, the common theme of the games I played (lots of U/R/x and B/G/x) is that the deck makes its money off of protection and evasion, hence the extra emphasis on Mirran Crusader and Paladin en-Vec. Mirran Crusader was always an obvious choice, but Paladin en-Vec not so much, since I kept comparing it with Fiendslayer Paladin. However, there were many times where I had wished that Fiendslayer Paladin had real protection because it often created awkward board states where I'd either be unable to hold off a Tasigur or unable to attack through one, among other similar situations (not to mention the fact that it dodges the red sweepers and Grim Lavamancer). Running relevant numbers of both of these in the mainboard requires the opponent to have specific removal at specific times, which is right where we want the game to be (especially since it will buy time to draw Brave the Elements if needed).
- Leonin Skyhunter was originally a card that I cut from the deck, but that evasion is very relevant.
- I'm trying out a singleton Mutavault just out of curiosity's sake, and I plan to save up for 1-2 more copies of Horizon Canopy since the deck could really use some card draw.
- I'm also trying to figure out if Knight of the Holy Nimbus might have a place among the 2-drops (maybe in place of Knight of Meadowgrain?) due to the fact that it's difficult to remove, much like other creatures in the deck. Thoughts?
- I also noticed that many people here run Torpor Orb in the sideboard, but what about Hushwing Gryff?
I like Nimbus and I use him in place of White Orchid. Since I don't currently run anything over three-casting-cost main-deck, I don't much need the extra land.
Also, I prefer White Shield Crusader over Leo; originally I had Champion of the Parish and was consequently required to say "Human" instead of "Knight" when I played my Caverns. I don't roll that way any more but I still like the protection and the pump-ability.
Artifacts are in general a bit more resilient than creatures but flyers with flash have their merit as well. I suppose an artifact doesn't feel "non-tribal".
Figured I'd go the aggro/tempo route with cards like Lyev Skyknight and Remand. Still considering whether or not I should use Court Hussar for the card advantage.

I been mainly playing Zoo these days but I decided to look back at this list and incorporate some of the ideas from that deck into my Knights list. I been doing some playtests and I'm delighted to see how fast it can be.
2 drops to get 4 mana for later. Worked well, beat twin, gruul zoo and delver with out a side. I'll totally admit they made mistakes since they werent used to the cards. Like casting goyf assuming they can block a student of warfare who suddenly became a 4/4 double strike, or attacking into a company, which I managed to get 2 examplars out. Numbers are totally wrong, but its a pretty good rough draft.
Four-drops I've always been leery of and I'm not sure I'd want four of any of them, even Collected Company. Four dorks aren't quite reliable and I'm also disinclined to need G on turn-one with the need for WW on turn-two. It seems as if a turn-three Blood Moon when on the draw would be good-game.
[card-Knight of the Reliquary]KotR[/card] can obviously get big, but I wonder if she can get big enough reliably.
In any case, my hat's off to both of you for giving it a go; I wish I could find the energy to try a GW build myself.
Did some testing with a really basic knights list.

Wow, you beat Twin. Knights is generally a linear aggro deck, so it works great against other aggro decks, but I was under the impression that Twin is a combo/control deck, which Knights doesn't work well. Also, you have a high number of cards that could come into play tapped, so I'm surprised that didn't hamper you.
If twin combos, you'll lose, if it controls, it wont. Same deal with zoo. You just have to play correctly, and most of the time, thats knowing they can combo, and playing risky regardless.

I do need to take that advice to heart. Too frequently I get much too conservative/timid when playing twin.
Also, I was curious if there was a reason why in your rudimentary knights build you went with Selesnya Charm over Dromoka's Command?
I do not find Collected Company to be a direct replacement for Aether Vial. You would use Collected Company as a supplement to Vials.

- I was originally running 3 Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers and a second Wilt-Leaf Liege in place of a 3rd Mirran Crusader and the 3 Paladin en-Vec. Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers really didn't shine, and only worked well in tandem with other cards like Wilt-Leaf Liege and Light from Within. In a world of super efficient spot removal and discard, we really can't afford to have creatures that can't stand on their own.
- Speaking of which, the common theme of the games I played (lots of U/R/x and B/G/x) is that the deck makes its money off of protection and evasion, hence the extra emphasis on Mirran Crusader and Paladin en-Vec.

I do need to take that advice to heart. Too frequently I get much too conservative/timid when playing twin.
Also, I was curious if there was a reason why in your rudimentary knights build you went with Selesnya Charm over Dromoka's Command?
