Really looking into playing this as its a nice break-in-point for Control into the Modern format.
Bit annoyed at the prices though. Would it be possible to run say the split lands from ISD, M11/12 and/or lands Shadowmore in place of the rather pricey shocklands?
You certainly could. However, it is very important to realize that one of the major benefits of the shocklands is the ability to fetch them with the Zendikar fetches. You would be losing a lot of the utility and practicality of the fetchlands without them.
And the shocklands count as Islands for Vedalken Shackles, and the other nonbasics don't.
Yeah, shocklands are excellent in this deck.
Yeah good point. I was just looking for some cheaper alternatives where I could. Maybe able to do it with a combo of border posts and basic islands and/or the Cascade Buffs/ISD land. Border posts would also give some more options with Tez.
I don't really have time to mix and match cards so whats a good list suggestion that I can playtest before the weekend shows up?
Thanks.
Also, can this deck work without Vendilion Clique? I have most of the pieces (even the singleton Shocklands!) but not the Vendilion Clique. Also, everyone in my playgroup would be playing theirs so I will have no resource to get them.

Thanks for spiderboy4 of High~Light_Studios for the kick ass avatar.
Thanks for DarkNightCavalier of HotPS for the exceptional signature.
I am convinced that WotC is "dumbing" the game because of all the stupid posts they come across on MTG-related forums

we are quite far off of an optimal list. Also this really isn't the type of deck you should walk into a tournament with unless you have done ample testing.

At this point, I think there are two main schools of thought
Esper
U/splash
The Esper versions having more of a heavy black and white commitment for Agent of Bolas, hand disruption and removal.
The splash versions tend to run Firespout and other spells as a splash (r/g)
We should probably band together and move forward on one school of thought. Although I like the splash version better, it seems that the Esper version is running better and has more background for us to work off of (this list and Nassif's PT list)

Honestly I hate agaent of bolas. None of the list I have seen main deck trinket mage, but I think he is really great, except against control.

I also don't like Agent of Bolas...but I haven't tested as much as I want too yet...my question regarding that list I posted is, why is there no thirst for knowledge? I thought that was the draw spell that this kind of deck loved...he's got like 20 artifacts, and you could run an extra citadel or 2...plus you can get back artifacts back with academy ruins, which I liked as a 2 of in the limited testing I did do...i'm really curious

I have to agree with preferring the U/splash version over the Esper. I believe that we really only need one Tez (Seeker) to give us wins with this deck. I am sure that there is space for both types in this format but I don't see the need to have both Tez in the one deck.
I dont agree with the lack of agent of bolas, it does provide a very good source for win conditions in the deck if only as a 1-of, as both minus effects are very good, but I wouldnt put more than 2-3 planeswalkers in this deck as it stands now. In addition, with ensnaring bridge being an important card in the deck, what are your other damage sources if you cant activate Tezzeret the seeker?

The issue with that is your running B for 1 stupid card. you mana base is much better with it just being 2 colors.
Also that daily list was garbage where is the card draw...oh yeah drawing cards is too slow for this format.

@ Slipknot72102- you mean the one in Melkor1010's post? Bottled Cloister kind of counts, emphasis on "KIND OF". It seems way too slow to do its job against discard though, and is probably used as more of a one-sided howling mine draw engine

Decided to build this, but haven't settled on a list. I think I prefer the versions without Agent of Bolas. What would you guys say are the weak matchups?

In that case, I would want Blood Moons in the sideboard. Maybe Crucible in the main deck + Ghost Quarter like in the deck list in the OP?
Crucible + ghost quarter is an auto include. Its one of the ways that this deck "wins" the game. I'm not a big fan of playing red in this deck, just do What I'm doing and hope they ban cloudpost lol.

I was going to play Firespouts anyway. Just one Steam Vents + 1 or 2 Mox though.
Mox will almost never actually tap for mana. We can't really run artifact lands, and most of our artifacts have to be sacrificed to do anything.

Not the best option to be honest. I'm not sure on the colors, but I'm really leaning to UW since I expect aggro to be the top tier of the meta now.

With Shackles: Steal a dude, remove that creature. Rinse, Repeat until satisfied. Crack the sanctum, get all the dudes PERMANENTLY!
With Tezzeret: Search an Artifact, blink tezz back in and untap two... OR use tezz to steal and remove two creatures a turn with Shackles/Synod!
With Ensnaring Bridge: Keep your opponent locked down with bridge, then go ultimate with Tezzeret and remove your own bridge to swing in!
With Trinket Mage / Pithing Needle: Pick a new target for Needle, Find more artifacts with Mage.
