So, this combo where you play Death's Shadow early and it dies (or you get it in your GY some other way), play Varolz, the Scar-Stripped, and scavenge 13 +1/+1 counters onto him for B. Although its a cute, neat trick, it can be deadly.
Then, the deck would consist of the usual landbase- Verdant Catacombs and Overgrown Tomb, maybe some filters and checks. Liliana of the Veil, Abrupt Decay, Dark Confidant, maybe splash red for Lightning Bolts and Kird Apes.
Does anyone see this as a legit threat in the modern metagame?
Lotleth Troll as a discard enabler Vexing Devil if you are willing to go Jund (4 +1/+1 for R). If you do go Jund, consider using the Rakdos champion in DGM, Exava, so you can plop down a weenie from your hand, scavenge something on to it, and swing Force of Savagery 8 +1/+1 for 2G.
And, of course, you can always throw a little bit of dredge in here.
I would build a deck that can function without it. Maybe a Jund Build. Combine a jund type zombies build with Varolz and Endless Whispers (get your opponents creatures, while you convert yours into better things). Can make you an aggro deck with mid-game steam.
If you have Tarmogoyfs they should be great as it's a great beater and scavenging him should be pretty great once dead. I would run Thoughtseize and dismember so you can go in suicide mode and punch some face with death's shadow too in case you don't draw varolz. Lastly, grisly salvage could be a card here, helping you dig for Varolz and getting some juicy scavenging targets on the grave. Jotun Grunt might be a bit anti-synergistic, but it does have quite the power for his cost and can shrink opposing goyfs too (vexing devil has already been mentioned, it's great here, I would recommend go Jund colors)
Alright, maybe two Death's Shadow was a bit overkill... but hitting one after looting is not that unlikely.

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. - René Descartes
I put a few Putrefax into the deck for a quick kill. This is so funny but is rare. 18 trample infect haste is quite strong. Haven't been able to test it in a truely competitive modern deck yet though. Just a few fun games. The combo is fun for sure.
Yeah, Vexing Devil, Lotleth Troll and Jarad's Orders work very nicely in the deck, but J'sO might be a bit to expensive for Bob. Though, the thing is your opponent can just chump block your scavenged guys, so i think trample might be a crucial factor to the game plan.
Why not run Looter il-Kor who can filter, help you pitch him, then be your shadow dude to swing in for the victory?

deaths shadow, spark elemental, vexing devil as 1 drops with compliments of either deathrite shaman or some mana dork. Boggle is another option.
in 2 drop spot i like keldon maruaders, and hellspark elemental, oona's prowler, or sheltering ancient for either inevitability to hit the grave, or evasion.
personally i think having hellspark elemental and spark elemental give a very solid way to quickly send a target with haste and trample out of nowhere. sheltering ancient has trample as well.
Do we think Fauna Shaman is worth running to find him or is it too slow? It does a nice job of getting death's shadow into the graveyard. I will post my first list tonight

maybe add a hunted horror as a scavenge target? bb for +7/+7 counters seems really good
faithless looting and grisly salvage seem really good here too
also, a cavern of souls targeting troll for lotleth and varolz for uncounterability would be amazing

As someone mention Varolz must be part of a combo but the deck should survive without it. That means that other cards must be "ok to good".
Here is what I have in mind:
+ man-land such as
treetop village (trample)
maybe 2 blinkmoth nexus
I like all of these ideas. 1000 internets to you.
