Typical MBC, disrupt and control the opponent early game, then drop the bombs I thought I'd use Erebos as a theme, plus I can't afford Phyrexian Obliterators, so Erebos's Titan is the Devotion/Beatstick instead, Erebos for more card draw and Whip of Erebos to bring them back for more beatsticking Should be Fun!
Gifted Aetherborn would be really good here, I'd add it over Duress which isn't a great maindeck card and you already have 8x hand disruption spells in IoK and B.Maggot.

I've faced this kind of deck about a year ago, and it's strong even as budget version. The version that I faced had Lashwrithe in it.. but I don't know how many copies it had - even after the germ is killed, lashwrithe will make any of your creatures very large since the deck has all swamps. Maybe try testing it as a single?
Anyway, I like the addition of whips of Erebos since they help the deck to grind.. the lifelink allows the use of Erebos God of the dead as card draw engine for a longer time.
And Erebos Titan is indeed a good budget alternative to Obliterators...since the titan has BBB in cost, they provide plenty of devotion for Asphodel and Erebos.
D90Dennis14 - I completely understand those choices, but this is trying something a little different to typical MBC, I'll be ditching the 3 Duress for 3 Gifted Aetherborn though, seems like a solid move. I've noted Phyrexian Arena and Victim of Night for sure too plus the sideboard cards you mentioned which I definitley like the Nihil Spellbombs (completely forgot about those!!!) and Flaying Tendrills. Cheers!
The Fluff - I do have a soft spot for Lashwrithe and I like trying to work it into my mono black decks so I may try. Possibly instead of Desecration Demon? But yeah even though it's not as nuts as Obliterators, it's still a Beatstick and definitely is strong for adding to Devotion even though it's 1 less. Thanks for props for the deck idea!
The lashwrithe is what caused me to lose that game, because I had to kill every creature the MBC devotion player cast. Yes, maybe replace the demon with it.
And lastly, if you can spare a little cash.. 2 ratchet bombs in the sideboard would be good too, they get rid of things like tokens and certain enchantments that mono black has a hard time removing.
Yeah attaching Lashwrithe to either Titan or Erebos could easily close out the game if all goes to plan. Ah yes, I have the Ratchet Bombs in my cart I'm working on before I buy the cards, It's definitely going in the sideboard, just forgot to update it haha, I switch and change the main deck as I go and forget to update the sideboard all the time
Attaching the Lash to Nighthawk would allow you to gain a ton of life while also dealing damage - since by that time you have a minimum of 4 swamp, so nighthawak would be a 6/7 flying monster. Anyway, I think your list is already good. Adjustments can be made in the sideboard once you've taken it to an FNM.
Of course! Good point! Sorry, Ive been out of the game for a while now and getting back into it slowly but surely locally :), Will definitely alter the sideboard once I know the local meta. From what I hear, there's a bunch of Affinity around, but Im sure the usual suspects will be there (Tron, Jund, BWTokens, etc).
Curious, but how do Whip of Erebos decks usually play? Does it play by reanimating creatures? And if so, how would you pile your graveyard with said creatures?
Or are they more just..play creatures and beat on your opponent while being able to reanimate? I am a bit confused but find myself more intrigued by that card
It's more there as having an option to reanimate. But yes, in this deck, swing in with early creatures which will more than likely be taken out, then late game, bring it out, reanimate. The main focus is obviously to get the Devotion online and slam down Gary. If the opponent has put him or any other copies to the graveyard, he can come back via whip. It's handy against mill decks too since you'll have access to a wide selection in the graveyard haha

I now notice that you have Gifted Aetherborn in your list. That's a good card.. provides 2 devotion, trades with tarmogoyf, and would be amazing if you manage to attach a lashwrithe to it. Have fun in testing.

Indeed! Seems very good to have either Aetherborn or Nighthawk with Lashwrithe attached
I've adjusted my CoolStuffInc wishlist cart total to be able to have Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet in place of Lashwrithe. As neat as Lashwrithe is on Gifted Aetherborn and Vampire Nighthawk, I just think Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is much better, especially when I can create zombie tokens when opponents creatures die or I can sac any of my Vampire/Zombie creatures to him and make him bigger Plus he actually adds to the Devotion count unlike Lashwrithe.
Not a huge change, but it's enough to give a bit more strength to the deck. I like this list (just waiting for my birthday money haha) and I'll pull the trigger and see how it all goes!
G.Angler is mediocre to bad in this deck, especially without fetchlands to power it.
Even something like Erebos's Titan (not a great creature) or Desecration Demon is probably more efficient.
21 Swamp
Artifacts
2 Whip of Erebos
Instants
1 Dismember
4 Fatal Push
1 Murderous Cut
Sorceries
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Sign in Blood
4 Brain Maggot
3 Gifted Aetherborn
4 Gatekeeper of Malakir
4 Vampire Nighthawk
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Erebos's Titan
1 Erebos, God of the Dead
3 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
2 Flaying Tendrills
2 Rain of Tears
2 Hero's Downfall
1 Murderous Cut
2 Mutilate
3 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Ratchet Bomb
1 Ultimate Price
Abyssal Persecutor is a decent alternative to Erebos's Titan and Desecration Demon.
You need something to kill it though, Victim of Night would be my choice over Murderous Cut and Dismember.
Go for the Throat is also decent (pretty much a strictly better Ultimate Price).
I'd consider a copy or two of Phyrexian Arena over Sign in Blood/Whip of Erebos.
I'd suggest:
-3x Duress, -2x Whip of Erebos, -3x Sign in Blood, -1x Desecration Demon, -4x Erebos's Titan, -1x Dismember, -1x Murderous Cut.
+4x Gifted Aetherborn, +2x Phyrexian Arena, +4x Abyssal Persecutor, +4x Victim of Night, +1x Swamp.
SB:
+1x Dismember +3x Go for the Throat, +2x Rain of Tears, +2x Flaying Tendrils, +3x Nihil Spellbomb (or Bojuka Bog).
-3x Ultimate Price, -1x Murderous Cut, -2x Ghost Quarter, -2x Bile Blight, -3x Tormod's Crypt.

But what do ya think is this a deck for the gurmag angler?

Best 4-cmc options are probably Abyssal Persecutor or Lashwrithe and for a higher budget there are Kalitas, Erebos and Obliterator.
