Style you like to play: control, combo, and aggro.
Budget you have: $100 USD but budget is flexible
Level you want to play at, or aim to build up to: FNM (Looking to beat Burn, dredge, and G/W hatebears)
I've been thinking about building a budget bogles deck but the more I look into it the less reliable it seems to be without fetches, noble hierarchs, or spellskites. Thus I'm looking into other budget decks.

One of my friends is looking to get a modern, and I want to ask people's opinion on what deck I should get him
Cards you already own - Nothing of Note except a playset of Bolt
Colors you like to play - Red, White and Blue
Style you like to play (control, combo, aggro, midrange, tempo, ramp, rogue) - Midrange, Tempo and Control
Budget you have - $100
Level you want to play at, or aim to build up to (causal, fmn, ptq) - fnm
You could probably play a burn deck. 200 dollars is the sweet amount.

Hi, i hope u can help me!
I want to come back to play magic, i dont know nothing or something more about current meta in modern , but i m not so good in it. I m just searching the most budget-competitive deck for modern under 50 - 70 $.

just the local store-run modern tournaments.
Hi, first post. I'm getting back into Magic after a few months. Use to be in Standard, but I'm trading those cards away and jumping into modern. I'll be making a deck on MTGO first, then once I've found my deck I'll make the real thing.
Budget?
100 TIX, give or take 30. But I want to be able put a few TIX into this per week, or fortnight or whatever, and slowly upgrade this over time.
Styles?
Not particularly sure, but I've been looking at mid-range, interactive "fair" decks eg. Jund, Abzan/Junk. I've seen budget Goyf-less Junk lists before, but budget Jund doesn't seem to be a thing.
Death and Taxes decks also look interesting eg. the new Eldrazi Taxes that seems to be doing very well lately, and it's very cheap.
Colours?
Not phased.
Level of play?
PTQ potential, but just LGS stuff for now.
Cards I already own?
I own a small list of staples from Junk, Jund and D&T lists in paper, but I'm expecting to just get mostly new cards.

in my opinion better play a solid tier 2/3 deck before a budget tier 1. So go with Eldrazi and taxes, i play D&T and is legit deck for a while (when pod was around in fact XD).
the most expensive/important card is vial i think, the rest is pretty cheap.

Thanks for the reply, and I definitely think you're right. Much better going with a completed tier 2/3 deck. After looking around I also found B/W tokens which can be built in my price range (no Bob or fetches, but there's a full playset of Thoughtseize, Inquisition, Path). So now I'm just deciding between these 2 I guess (Eldrazi Taxes seems more viable, so I might go with that).
On a side note, I saw Mono Blue Tron, which is probably the only blue control deck in my price range (well close to it), so I'll give that a look too.

personal opinion here. I play U tron, D&T (and have played/play several others) and NOT tokens, but i have played a lot against them.
D&T is consistently solid, you can adapt a little to meta (for example swamp blade splicer with finks, lower curve taking out restoration angel, adding more 1cc removal like dismember, oust, condemn, etc) and IF you can overcome its weakness (need a lot synergy, somewhat like affinity), its a great deck. And i think that the eldrazi add more self contained power in card, so the deck is less dependent on synergy right now.
Mono U tron is also a great deck, the only problem i see is that is an awful deck when meta is too fast (infect, burn, boggles, affinity) and suffer from the same hate that affinity/thopter (mainly stony silence). So, again to me, the only problem with this deck is that you will have a real hard time against fast meta (and while chalice of the void helps, i think is better to play another deck before 4 chalice of the deck main), if you are fine with this, go with it.
Tokens is another great and adaptable meta deck, and really shines in "fairs" metagame, where 1x1, aka jund, is everywhere. you can add more discard againt combo, more removal against permanents, more hate with white (best sideboard in modern). My real concern here is budget wise, you really need B turn 1 because of discard, so marsh flat is somewhat a must. also while dark confidant is not a card i think is really needed here (unlike jund for example), Auriok Champion IS a star and playset of bitterblossom is mandatory.
TLDR summarize, the 3 are great deck to commit, but each have its weakness.

Thanks so much. D&T still sounds great; I love synergy, I love having control over the game while being aggressive, and I love a deck with that kind of modularity you described, as I can continue to tune it to the meta (and while the cheapest variant is currently, apparently, the most viable in this meta, that gives me plenty of room for future upgrades, and I love that too). U Tron seems too susceptible to aggro like you said. Tokens seems too susceptible to non-interactive decks, entirely relying on disruption to get through its usually slow clock (though I guess Jund is the most popular deck right now). The deck might be a bit out of my price range though; Auriok Champion seems vital against aggro, no Marsh Flats means loosing a reliable manabase, and no Bitterblossom. I could probably fit 5-6 of these into the budget, but not a playset of each.
There were 2 last decks I've found, that's Skred Red and Abzan Liege/Wilted Abzan. Was wondering if you had any experience with/against these decks too?
Practically all the money in Skred is in the 3 Blood Moons, and holy crap is it big money. There are a few other cards that are about 5 TIX each (the walkers and other finishers), but I can get the whole list + SB for 140 TIX. This particular list has apparently done really well against most the meta, "Rogue Deck Builder" put results and stuff on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RogueDeckBuilder/ The Mono-Red Control deck seems cool.
Abzan Liege is impossible to build with my budget. 4 of each Noble Hierarch, Voice of Resurgence and Verdant Catacombs makes sure of that. But I did plan a budget list excluding these cards that could perform fairly well (though obviously nothing is close to Voice or Hierarch), and I'd just buy them later down the track. I managed to fit the 1st Hierarch in the list too. The deck's definitely very strong against Jund, the popular one, but I'm feeling like this deck is simply just a meta-choice, and I'm worried it might become a very weak deck (or even completely unviable) if I'm in a meta that avoids the fair play this deck loves.
EDIT: Oh, and I've been following and trying to make my own R/G Land Destruction deck. There was an article by SaffronOlive on MTGGoldfish a while ago on a Goblin Dark-Dwellers + Molten Rain deck, which was in-turn based on an earlier deck that used Blood Moon and Stormbreath Dragon instead. Since then I've seen a few new lists that are trying cool things. It seems like it could be a legit deck.
I think I'm leaning towards D&T the most right now, mainly because it forces the opponent to interact with you, and interactive games are the best (it also seems to be one of the best performing decks in my price range.. so far only at Leagues as far as I can tell on MTGO, but it's a start). I also love the look of Abzan Liege at the moment, and Skred looks interesting.
Splenyi: i really really dislike skred, to me is a bad deck and only a blood moon deck, while some other deck (WR control) is at least a blood moon/bridge deck and Blue Moon is a Blood Moon/counter deck. Other than budget wise, i see any other blood moon deck better than skred.
Abzan liege: Like you say it, the big problem is money. Also Liege was born like more like a meta choice, so i think abzan company or junk are better WBG decks, so to me is not a good deck (put in another way, there are better choices).
I have a bunch of Izzet stuff (I.e. Charms, lightning bolt, epic experiment, melek, firemind, dracogenious, counterspells, ect), but Im using them in for EDH, plus I've played with Izzet for awhile, so I'd like to do something new. I also have Jeskai/Ojutai cards... Both Narsets, both ojutais, some more dragons, 2 monastery Swiftspears, Shu Yun ect
However, I've gotten somewhat tired of those types of decks, and I would like to do something else. I have a green/black ramp deck, with some fatties thrown in (Garruk, Vraska, Gitrog, and more). I have a iffy Temur deck, and a bunch of random cards, but nothing super good. (Except Path to Exile and the new Sorin)
My budget is about $50, but I could go over a bit. I've looked at some net decks, I my favorites are probably the infect decks, but they don't seem as good as some of their non-budget versions.
I'd probably only go as far as FNM, and mostly kitchen counter play, but I would still like a competitive deck.

Burn gives the most bang for your buck as far as budget decks go. Budget Storm is also pretty near the full deck other than the mana base. Infect is another good budget list as you have pointed out. Sounds like you have some basic Jeskai Control cards aswell.

the problem with infect and budget is that you NEED the 4 inkmoth nexus.
You can go either mono green for bugdet (and is pretty good) or mono black (with a lot of discard), but at the end the bottleneck is inxmoth nexus, if you have it you can play infect, otherwise stay away.
50 USS is really low budget (a budget burn without fetch would cost at least 100, since you need 4 goblin guide), you cant get anything "proved" competitive for that, but you could try and sucess (at FNM level) with some brews.
I would like to play modern casual-fnm style (as in compete, but not tryhard for a win).
I have played a couple of wonky homebrews so far, including:
Abzan walkers
Esper Boardwipes
Izzet Curiosity "Tempo"
A very budget Sultai reanimator deck.
I have quite a few cards in all colors except white, which I would if possible like to play as little as possible.
My favourite color is blue, but I don't mind any besides white. Green isn't my favourite in terms of creatures, but as a secondary color it's alright.
I prefer playing tempo/control decks, as you can probably tell by the other decks I've played.
Budget: maximum ~200.- but we don't need to spend every last penny
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, loving this thread already!

what about mono U tron? is like a tempo/combo deck with control elements.
Thank you for the suggestion, but how exactly am I to build a Mono U Tron without its finishers? I'm not sure that a Tron deck without Ugin, Karn or Walkers is viable?
Is there any way to build an at least semi-budget version of loam pox? I've seen it played a bit, and it looks like a really fun (and complex) deck to run, especially since I'm starting to get quite bored of the decks I already own.. (which weren't that cheap).
I will look into budget Tron lists, but it might not work out great in my very humble opinion.
remove the following cards: }
Main:
1 Snapcaster Mage
1 Wurmcoil Engine
1 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds
SB:
3 Spell Snare
1 Crucible of Worlds
3 Relic of Progenitus
and you have somewhat a 200 USS decklist (add 2/3 treasure mage and 1/0 solemn simulacrum or spatial contortion/ weil for removal) and you havea great FNM deck.
granted, a mono U tron decklist wont win a PTQQ, but you can steal FNM with it.
So I like playing enemy dual color decks, I tend to toy with enemy bi-colored with black. Manabase wise I don't have much out side of caves of kalios and a few shambling vent in B/W, also have a Sorin, Solemn Visitor and a Secure the Wastes and a Myth Realized that would be fun to build around. Also have playsets of thought scour and delver of secrets along with incomplete playsets of painful truths and serum visions. My budget to start is $50 though I can go no higher than $100. I would like to be able to take this to FNM on occasion. Also not sure of if this helps or not but am fan of cards like shadow lance and the extort mechanic. As for playstyle I tend to like tempoish control decks that lean more to the late game win.
StrontiumFlame: i would remove the Scuttling Doom Engine, i know its a wurmocoil proxy, but use Myr Battlesphere instead.
i would remove dismember mandeck and put spatial contortion, unless your meta is full with infect.
-1 spell burst, +1 repeal
sadly you need oblivion stone as x1, late game infinite loop with academy ruins is mandatory.
other that than, the deck seems fine!
NezumiNinja1: go for WB tokens, add lingering souls, intangible virtue, spectral pocession. etc
for competitive magic stay away from "theme deck" like extortion. While you can add some good extortion cards, dont make a theme deck, and sadly shadow lance is not a good card, because you will lose 2x1, thats why tokens with anthem effect succeed.
US38: thats more a metagame question, both are good deck, in a blind meta i prefer burn over zoo, but i´m not 100% sold on that. Also to me zoo need tarmo, and since this is budget i would stay away from them.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, loving this thread already!
what about mono U tron? is like a tempo/combo deck with control elements.

you could remove the walkers, spellskite and other stuff, i´m pretty sure you can get a good FNM list with that budget (even less).
Is there any way to build an at least semi-budget version of loam pox? I've seen it played a bit, and it looks like a really fun (and complex) deck to run, especially since I'm starting to get quite bored of the decks I already own.. (which weren't that cheap).
I will look into budget Tron lists, but it might not work out great in my very humble opinion.
remove the following cards: }
Main:
1 Snapcaster Mage
1 Wurmcoil Engine
1 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds
SB:
3 Spell Snare
1 Crucible of Worlds
3 Relic of Progenitus
and you have somewhat a 200 USS decklist (add 2/3 treasure mage and 1/0 solemn simulacrum or spatial contortion/ weil for removal) and you havea great FNM deck.
granted, a mono U tron decklist wont win a PTQQ, but you can steal FNM with it.
This is what I've come up with: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/28-05-16-budget-mono-u-tron/
I'm sorry for refering to another site, but I have honestly no clue how to use the deck function on this website :/
Any major improvements you would make? How could I potentially replace Oblivion Stone?
Also, how do dredge decks perform in budget versions?
Would love to hear some opinions on those decks.
Edit: Included playstyles I am aiming for.
i would remove dismember mandeck and put spatial contortion, unless your meta is full with infect.
