I wanted to start playing mtgo rather than paper so im kind of looking for a budget deck to get started. was thinking about making an old school zoo deck without the goyf and noble hierarchs. Would this deck still work in todays modern?
There are probably better budget aggro options. The 8 Whack lists seem popular for this sort of thing. I've also played against the 12 Bolt lists with Flame of Keld online and they seem fine and are like 30 tix. That could get you started.

8 whack zoo builds still can do well in some FNM's where you know what most of the people are playing... but if you're asking to be competitive in large tournaments, zoo sadly does not make the cut anymore.
I feel like the new Pelt Collecter Zoo deck might be able to carve itself a niche in the meta, but even then, it's competing with Hollow One, Scales Affinity, and Bridgevine in the aggro sweepstakes.

Well, I can saw a woman in two, but you won't wanna look in the box when I'm through.

Heck, 8Whack can put up competitive results now and then. It got Top 16 at GP Hong Kong (see here). And it's cheap, too--the only particularly expensive card I notice is Goblin Guide, and even that one is "only" $25 each.
And I actually somewhat agree with them. If you dedicate yourself to a deck, building, tweaking, and putting your blood, sweat, and tears into it, I think nearly anything's possible. One of the players from that thread is local to me and crushes me with the deck, much to my dismay.

Yeah this, and it is competing with Humans/Bant Spirit as well.
I think the Pelt Collector Zoo is doing well in the Modern Challenges, so it is a viable deck.
Like if you expect the metagame to be slow, non-interactive, the deck can be really good.
I've seen some people trying out 3c/4c zoo variants with pelt collector and vexing devil plus other good aggressive creatures. 8 whack is also explosive at times.
From what I've seen, the deck kinda dropped off when fatal push was printed

If you just want to go 3-2 or better in Leagues then yes. Zoo, like most fringe decks, is viable enough that an experienced pilot can sustain a slight winning (and profitable/self-sustaining) record with it online. You are unlikely to win a GP with the deck. But at the 5-8 round level, it's totally possible to go infinite if you are experienced on the deck and build your 75 correctly.
yeah id definitely be on some small bushwacker zoo if you want to sleeve up nacatls.
the issue is that the modern aggro archetype is bloated as hell. so you are playing on an axis that people are already very prepared for. some tier 2 decks find their way to the top tables by exploiting some opening in the meta, but its incredibly unlikely for a vanilla beatdown deck to do that.
there was a guy at GP atlanta that made it sorta deep into day 2 with a big zoo deck. it had like birds/nobles/goyfs/KotR. cant remember the guys name atm...

Did he make Top 32 or is there a list? I'd like to show a friend from our LGS (and on here too) who has been wrecking face with Zoo for at least 4 years now.
I still remember a 9 week span where I ran Grishoalbrand at a specific LGS on Tuesdays and never lost to anyone but him during that span (1-2 during that span). Freaking Wild(er) Nacatl...

his name is Steven Peets, and he went 10-5 (started day 2 at 6-2) - so not as well as i thought but a fine record nonetheless. i just remembered he showed up on coverage day 1 and earlier on day 2 with like the fairest deck ever. so no list
If we're talking about viability, I dare say Big Zoo is much more competitive than bushwhacker even though the latter gets most of the hype.
Been saying for what feels like forever now. Big Zoo is very consistent, mulligans decently and has varying interaction and flexible play patterns against most decks. Bushwhacker Zoo on the other hand... well you either nut them out or you fizzle and die, a very polarising gameplay experience.
Guys please opinions on japanese cards. Lost a 3/3 creature against Japan celestial colonade. This guy played all creatures and spells in english cards, but some cards in his manabase was japanese. I dont registrated this really ( my brain say its all fine and all english to me lets attack his empty board)...and i am sure it is a Kind of legal cheating. It is not ok, but i know legal. I Hate such people. I never forget colonade normally, but with this Tricks it can happen one time in 3 years and such people take advantage of this
If I am a customer spending premium amount of dollars, I expect a premium service. Jund falls into the category of a premium deck costing more dollars than a majority of the rest of the format. I'm not getting the desired performance ratio per dollars spent out of the Jund deck because WOTC decided to make the format more diverse.

Thanks. That's pretty good. I think our Big Zoo player did 10-5 at Los Angeles a while ago. He recently added Assassin's Trophy to the deck and said it's nuts. It's hard to argue with his 3 recent results (3-0-1, 3-1 losing to me on Titanshift, and 3-0-1).

I agree. I actually would be tempted to do the Bushwhacker Zoo, but Big Zoo is actually a lot better than most people give credit for. You really have to continue to tinker with the lists though, while keeping a strong core.
