Ionize is complete trash. The kinds of decks that would benefit from the 2 damage would never want to spend 3 mana doing it. Another disappointment in a long line of disappointing URx spells. I was hopeful after seeing Assassin's Trophy, but then I remembered this is Wizards we're talking about.
I actually laughed because I had forgotten about the other 3cmc 1UR Counterflux! A card I have ACTUALLY used in the last 8 Months, and won games with, which this card would NOT win.
So yeah, glad I dont have to buy those 4 singles as I wont be cracking packs on this set.
Jump-Start looks HORRIBLE so far. Still waiting on that U - Surveil 1 - Draw 1. If we dont get a U mana Cantrip, I'm going to be mega disappointed. At this point I'm just in 'temper expectations' mode. I want just 1 good U card.
, but then I remembered this is Wizards we're talking about.

I thought as much not surprised it came up clutch aginast Storm.
This is hilarious though Golgari gets handed the most push removal spell in ages even compared to the usual Golgari Standard.
Izzet gets handed the weakest 3 CMC Counter Possible. I suppose it could do 1 damage.
So Remember Class, 2 CMC Removal with limited downside is fine. But 2 CMC Counters are Forbidden and Unfair, cannot even get 3 CMC counters with good upside lol.
Ionize should have had Jump-Start. Would have justified the cost to know you have 2 hard counters and 4 damage. Buuut we know why that would cause an uproar. Doesn't matter, shouldn't give guild mechanics to guild rares anyway.
I've been predicting a damaging counterspell like Ionize for a while. Ionize itself looks promising, so I'll be testing it tonight. (Shame all the 3-mana proven maindeckable counterspells in Modern have legs...)
Nullhide Ferox has got to be the fattest anti-discard guy yet. It also makes removal that targets it cost 2 mana more...but it prevents you from casting noncreature spells unless you feel like paying that same 2-mana tax and opening it up to removal. Since it outsizes most Goyfs, might it see play?
Goblin Cratermaker is a fine suicidal hate bear that can peg X/1-2's or colorless non-lands (e.g. most artifacts, Karn, Ugin, Eldrazi). But is it fine enough for Modern?
You think so? Team Faeries is super skeptical of the new Faerie. I might pick up a foil set to test, though I dont expect great results. Repeatable draw-fixing effect on a flier is solid, and attacks into lingering souls profitably though.

Yeah its not jump off the screen amazing, and I've only dabbled with UB Faeries in the most casual of way, but looks neat enough as a test worthy card, if it had flash I'd like it more.
March of the Multitudes I might have slightly misjudged. In a token deck, I think there are better and more reliable options than this card. However there might be something here with regards to an Aristocrats deck. Some synergy with Return to the Ranks, though both trying to accomplish a similar goal through different methods.

looks like a powerful enabler. not too sure what it could do, but a 2 cmc instant speed tutor cant be overlooked.
street wraith is the first card that came to mind that can pair with it.

Secrets of the Mausoleum also looks like a card valuable for some type of Aristocrats strategy. Being able to easily tutor for a Blood Artist or Viscera Seer is valuable for that deck. Never really played Aristocrats before, but given the Golgari graveyard creature focus, I wouldn't be surprised if this deck gets a boost from this set.
At first I thought it just found creatures but any Black Card...good stuff.
yeah no kidding. the card has a hell of a lot of space to work with. the real question is the best way to turn it on. like how many creatures might you need coupled with some self milling/looting effects to reliably get 1,2, or 3 cmc spells.
undergrowth is fairly prohibitive in regards to combo decks. creature toolbox decks are typically leveraging green and white creatures.
maybe living end could use it somehow?

Living end probably doesn’t want it as it costs less than 3, the cascaders would hit it. Could enable a new version though, maybe utilizing As Foretold? Who knows

My Decks:

GU Kruphix's "Hug Assassin" RW Kalemne's "Play Fatties and Hope for the Best!" BUGW Atraxa's "All counters, all the time"
Secrets of the Mausoleum looks to be another hit card. It makes UB As ForetoldLiving End very consistent, and also is a reliable way to find Goryo's Vengeance in those decks. Normally you'd have to play some redundancy like Footsteps of the Goryo but now there is essentially 8 Vengeance effects. In a deck like this one it will be super potent because the graveyard is already getting filled with dredge creatures so 2 creatures is trivial. Reanimating Gristle with Vengeance is pretty much an auto win so finding the Vengeance is priority #1.
Beast Whisperer could be neat as a 1-of in Elves. Costing 4 is rough, but Elves makes tons of mana so it's not really that big of a problem. I could also see some near Heartless Summoning deck putting it to use. Druids could also be a neat brew since lots of them have higher toughnesses and cost 2G.
Yeah it looks good but i just don't know what current Black Deck would want it...most of them are graveyard abusing decks that don't really rely on finding a specific card to win even if they do have a lot of creatures going in and out of the graveyard. Maybe if that Sultai Control Deck ever takes off.
Living end probably doesn’t want it as it costs less than 3, the cascaders would hit it. Could enable a new version though, maybe utilizing As Foretold? Who knows
ah yeah, totally forgot you could cascade into it lol
yeah i dunno. the card certainly has the power, but better deckbuilders than me (ie everyone) will have to figure it out.

Surge, Ionize a possible upgrade to jeskai control? I haven't tried building that yet, but it looks like it does everything the deck would want.

Actually... the best place to put it might be a mill deck. Searching becomes quite scary.
Tron Decks can cast Chalice of the Void for 2.
Rather than destroy Blood Moon, a new option is to destroy the nonbasic land. UR decks can get hosed by their own enchantment.
Then again I can just combine it with Shadow of Doubt.

"Reveal a Dragon"
Shame about Beast Whisperer's Bolt-range body--it's our cheapest Glimpse of Nature provider yet. It cannot be cheated out with Collected Company and is prohibitively expensive to Chord of Calling out. Shucks, this might actually be better in Legacy where they can Green Sun's Zenith it out...
