This spell costs 1 less to cast if you control a Wizard.
Counter target spell.
looks like the tribal counterspell long theorized by custom card makers. t1 delver/siren stormtamer into this one is pure tempo
Damping Sphere

If a land is tapped for two or more mana, it produces C instead of any other type and amount.
Each spell a player casts costs 1 more to cast for each other spell that player has cast this turn.
probably the most hyped card right now. anti storm and tron(and cloudpost... and workshop...) with splash damage to snapcaster and arbor elf decks.
I am so excited to play Wizard's retort. All my nontoken creatures in faeries are wizards.

Wizards retort is quite awkward, I am unsure if it will see Modern play. In one scenario, Countering, then Snapcaster Countering sounds amazing, yet the risk of losing out against the effective casting cost compared to cards like Remand or Mana Leak doesn't add up to me.
The big question with retort is how important having it on t2 will be.
There are a number of 1 drop wizards (lavamancer, sage of epityr, siren stormtamer, cursecatcher, viscera seer, etc) that are varying degrees of playable if having a 1 drop is really important, but if playing a couple of mana leaks (or whatevers) and a couple of these is good enough, that would help a lot.
If this was like silumgar's scorn (and you could reveal a wizard) it would be perfect.
retort isnt an earlygame counter so much as a lategame hard counter thats easier to play things around IMO. But you can set it up for turn 3 with the ability to hold up a mana for fatal bolt path

As a blue player Damping Sphere makes you realize that responding to counterspells gets harder with one on the board...So I am intrigued

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
At least they're giving us playable wizards to go with the check spells:
Adeliz, the Cinder Wind
1UR
Legendary Creature — Human Wizard
2/2
Flying, haste
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, Wizards you control get +1/+1 until end of turn.
Ghitu Lavarunner
R
Creature — Human Wizard
1/2
As long as there are two or more instant and/or sorcery cards in your graveyard, Ghitu Lavarunner gets +1/+0 and has haste.
Guys, what do you think about new Karn? Modern playable?
Karn 4 Planeswalker - Karn, 5 Starting Loyalty +1: Reveal the top two cards of your library, an opponent puts one into your hand and exiles the other with a silver counter on it. -1: Put a card with a silver counter on it you own from exile into your hand -2: Create a 0/0 colorless artifact creature token with "This creature gets +1/+1 for each artifact you control"
Well I had comments on almost every card from the release notes and then my laptop crashed from what seemed like overheating.... Frustrating, but here's a the most immediate standout things from the notes and I'll do a full list later now.
- Broken Bond, removal and ramp for Tron and Bloom. Reactive though, and worse than existing 1 mana options. Neat to have however.
- Broken Bond very targeted hate card for Tron, Storm, Shops, Eldrazi, etc... Will see tons of sideboard play. At least artifacts are easy to destroy.
- Dauntless Bodyguard kind of like Mother of Runes. Could see play in Devoted Druid lists as a way to protect the removal magnet that is Druid.
- Jaya Ballard good for red prison decks. Can either do a Ancestral Recall or add mana for a boardwipe like Anger of the Gods.
- Karn, Scion of Urza is not the giant Tron monster that I was hoping for. It's a nice callback, and I can see it in the sideboards of Tron when you try to lower the curve postboard. He does what you want your PW to do, draw cards and protect himself, even if the +1 is a punisher effect. I think he is best in ETron where they have trouble drawing cards. Playing a Reshaper or TKS on T3 followed by this on T4 should give you a nice little card advantage engine with protection. He has a lot of loyalty too much like the OG Karn. Overall I like him.
- Merfolk Trickster is a great sideboard card for Merfolk. Lets you stop a creature combos, or stop the opponent's biggest threat allowing you to win on the crackback. I'm no Merfolk player, but I'd guess it's arguably a better Harbinger of the Tides.
- Mox Amber is a mox, so it must be broken somehow.... right?
- Powerstone Shard + Sculpting Steel + Mirage Mirror. We're bringing Cloudpost back to Modern!!
- Precognition Field is almost a Future Sight, meaning Green's Sun's Zenith can almost be a port of Tight Sight! I AM SO HYPED RIGHT NOW
- Steel Leaf Champion, Stompy will sure like this.
- Wizard's Retort, Snapcaster is a Wizard.
Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. - René Descartes

- If your legendary creatures and planeswalkers are all colorless, you can activate Mox Amber's ability, but you won't add any mana. Colorless is not a color.
I have a feeling they were paying a lot of attention to Affinity in particular when designing this Mox, which is a good thing overall (you do not want to break one of the main pillars of the format, especially not the one that originated from the first legal block of the format).
huh...well i was completely wrong then. figured thats how colorless worked ever since Wastes was brought into the equation. i guess it makes sense when colorless cards can hit cards with protection from all colors though.
nothing especially stands out as modern playable (aside from the tron hate card). there are a few cards that look like sidegrades or alternatives, like that 1G naturalize sorcery that also lets you put a land into play.
ill be interested to see if any of the sagas are pushed enough to see play. thought about that 1R saga that discards your hand then lets you draw 2 cards the next turn being something dredge might consider, but you only want so much of that type effect and cathartic is just better.
