so, Grand Prix Toronto is this weekend (Feb 9-11) and this is probably the first modern GP that we've seen in eastern Canada since at least I've been paying attention to competitive Magic (4 years or so).
I wanted to get a discussion going on it so hopefully this is the right place.
I have a few questions of my own:
- how will the recent modern Pro Tour impact the GP? as they are really close
- will any decks succeed as a result of the results of the PT?
-will more people take up Lantern, as it won?
-who all is going to the GP?
anyone who wants to meet IRL, send me a PM, I always enjoy meeting new players
In contrast to the last Modern Pro Tour, I predict at least one UG Merfolk player will show up to Day 1. Heck, let's be brazen and assume at least one UG Merfolk player will reach Day 2!
(Somehow, only 2 people showed up to the last Modern Pro Tour with Merfolk decks, neither played Merfolk Mistbinder so I'm assuming both were mono-U, and neither of them made it to Day 2.)
The only thing I predict will result from the PT is that people will remember their artifact hate and that both bolt and push are great.
Basically affinity and lantern will be public enemy number 1.
I look up at Face to Face's Open Top 8 to predict the meta in Toronto. I think we should see our fair share of Infect and Burn as the premium aggro deck. Grishoalbrand (look for Andrew Kee) is always a good one in Toronto as well as Ad Nauseam (look out for Chris Flink). We should see also a bunch of Eldrazi with P. Maynard and maybe some other decks!
I'm guessing that the RIX pro tour meta isn't a fair representation of the TRUE meta. It will be different this weekend, simply because fewer "pros" will be there, and people will be playing a larger variety of decklists.

I used to play a lot of F2F Opens before I had to take a break from Magic so I know the meta there quite a bit. I agree that there should be a pretty good spread there, with a good amount of tron and BGx decks as well
I think the thing with Lantern is that I've heard its hard to play so maybe people won't pcik it up, but affinity is common from my experience.
anyways, hopefully I'll see some of you at the GP, I probably won't be on much tomorrow, as we're headed down tomorrow night. Good luck everyone
I feel like the number of people swapping decks after the PT results won't be that many. Most people are already locked into a deck or a couple of choices prior to the PT. People probably won't pick up new decks this fast, especially not Lantern due to the difficulty of it. Picking up a new deck in a week isn't easy, you basically need to know the deck already. You're more likely to see a couple of cards swapped, sideboard changes, or perhaps changes from GB Tron to RG Tron (to get sweepers for Humans)

Agree.
It's also where I am at.. I am heavily leaning towards playing Tron and thought about RG since it does do well against Humans, Affinity, Burn (kinda), Pyromancer decks, Infect, etc... and then goes over top of everything larger that Pyroclasm/Kozilek's return can't hit. The problem with preparing for Humans with it is that they just Tax you with Thalia, name it with Meddling Mage, or take it sweepers with Freebooter. Really you're not going to be casting them so why not just play GB since FP is better vs Death's Shadow and CB does work against a ton of things.
I don't really know the matchups well enough to comment, you might be right about it. It feels like Humans is going to be a bad matchup whichever way you build your deck. They're always going to tax you and name your removal so you're always gambling. Whether that means you should highroll that they don't have Meddling Mage/Freebooter or hedge FP is better in other matchups is something you'd find out with after playing enough games vs Humans. Considering they have 8 answers I'd imagine FP might actually be better and you just accept Humans is a bad matchup.
For what it's worth, I'm in the Toronto area and Humans hasn't been popular at my local store. People have mostly been content playing what they have been. Though if there's any deck you can pick up very quickly, Humans is a relatively linear deck and seems like it would be easy to learn.
Can anyone with more exprience chime in on the GR tron/Humans MU? I feel like it would still suck for tron considering clasm isn't good enough and between mage/freebooter/thalia Kozilek's return woulnd't come online quick enough and get outpaced by the humans deck.
Also I don't think humans is an incredibly easy deck to pick up, playing with mage, freebooter and phantasmal image woulnd't be the easiest experience and learning your vial interactions and sequencing. IDK it seems like one of the harder aggro decks to pick up.
Me too--given all those hate bears it has, I think Humans is one of the hardest aggro decks to pick up. Soul reads with Meddling Mage can be terrifying at times.
I think Burn's easier to pick up and play. Some of the most complex decisions you need to make with it are when to time Skullcrack effects, when to play Eidolon of the Great Revel, and when to shoot creatures with Grim Lavamancer.
Burn is always going to be my pick for easiest deck to play in the format. But as far as decks go, learning Humans doesn't seem that bad. It's a linear deck and very straightforward. Sure, Meddling Mage and Freebooter are cards that take some time, but if you know the format well enough, you can probably figure these out very easily, it's just like Thoughtseize. It's not like a deck like Affinity that has complicated interactions, they're all simple and straightforward.
Apparently the player on table 1 in round 12 just got a match-loss for having a curved foil in his deck.
I'm sure this happens of course but I've never actually seen it happen before, let alone at a big tournament (and at the top of the standings)
Are you AT the GP Toronto? Or did you see it elsewhere?

I've seen this happen quite a bit. The argument is that it's a marked card. It's one of the reasons I avoid foils at all costs. I don't buy Magic cards for the "investment" aspect and don't want to risk a game loss due to something like this. You can somewhat control it but not entirely, especially if you live in a place that has some humidity.

You'll also naturally see more of the spread of playable decks. Griselbrand nonsense, rug midrange, faeries, that sort of stuff.
Facet of more players generally and also plenty of scope for people playing their pet decks.
