I always find it funny that Wizard never prints out good or even halfway decent auras.
If you looks at Bogles there are plenty of efficient auras in Modern already (and they don't even play the Blue ones).
If they'll return to Theros in future sets there might be new auras.
I think UG Merfolk can perhaps be a viable deck, but Speaker alone will not be the reason. A few more powerful green cards and we could have a deck in the making. Of course, Collected Company makes sense as well, but I am referring to new cards.
I can't remember who said it, but someone on the forums here made a good point about CoCo in Merfolk. Merfolk as a deck makes liberal use of Aether Vial, which makes you want to run a lot of 2 drop creatures. CoCo on the other hand makes you want to run a lot of 3 mana creatures so you can get a mana advantage out of the card. In a way to two strategies oppose each other.
I had never conciously thought about this, although I would tend to agree.
The common problem with Merfolk at the current meta though, is that the early, and late game are absolutely terrible. Merfolk needs to replace Cursecatcher and Master of Waves to see success in our new Modern metagame. Having little to no impact turn 1, then having something go completley over the top and just explode to Fatal Push doesn't seem good for most matchups. I suspect with the printing of a few more 1-3 Merfolk in the UG combination we see an entirely new breed of the deck have success.
Financially, I wouldn't wait on Lord of Atlantis, or Meerow Reejery those cards can explode overnight with any decent spoiler.
I agree about Master of Waves. But Curcatcher is so good at early disruption. It's going to be hard to find a one drop that's better.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
I agree about Master of Waves. But Curcatcher is so good at early disruption. It's going to be hard to find a one drop that's better.
Well, I agree that it probably won't replace Cursecatcher outright, but if we get enough cards for a UG Merfolk to get seriously looked at as a deck, the deck would probably go to a 3-3 or 4-2 split with this guy and 'catcher. Starting as a 2/2 by default is a serious advantage. It means a single lord makes it a 3/3 islandwalk, which is a significant improvement over a 2/2 islandwalk, and it also can get in for an extra point of damage or two in the first couple turns, which is not irrelevant. Think less "Cursecatcher replacement" and more "Goblin Guide that trades Haste for evasion and Tribal Synergy".
If we get a second playable Merfolk in Green, I could see a version of Fish that plays 4 CoCo + 4 Vial as its non-creature spells, swapping CoCo in as the "boardbuilder in a can" that Master of Waves is no longer able to be because of Push. It already has the 3cmc Merfolk version of Kira to help it incentivize going up a few 3cmc cards anyway. I'm really hoping for a second or third good Green Merfolk for exactly this reason.
i think people are really missing a great card in treasure map. multipurpose card that turns into a land. seems really good in control
I'm just not seeing it as good when Sunset Pyramid gives you access to the 3 drawn cards immediately (instead of needing to Scry a bunch of times first), it has the same CMC, and it still doesn't see play. It takes too long to get Treasure Map's mana boost, anyway.
Feels like a slightly better but still unplayable Treacherous Pit-Dweller. On the plus side, you can now play a deck with Pit-Dweller, Wanted Scoundrels, Rest in Peace and Samurai of the Pale Curtain (if your mana base can handle it). Similar in principle to the Torpor Orb/Tocatli Honor Guard deck, just that your creatures are smaller, but RIP is relevant against more decks than Torpor Orb.
I wouldn't play it as a SB card against combo, I'd play more discard instead.
I wouldn't look at the foreman for modern. Modern already has fabricate to work with and I doubt that any deck is looking to pay 1 extra for a 2/2 dude.
Deadeye Foreman seems perhaps good enough for modern.
You can fetch BSkull, SoFaI, Smuggler's Copter, etc...
Not sure what deck wants it, but def one to keep an eye on.
The body is so bad though and isn't cheap enough to compensate.
It reminds of slightly cheaper but much worse version of Stonehewer Giant that doesn't see play either.
Raging Swordtooth can also be a target of Summoner's Pact in order to deal with some aggro decks. Could be a fine option in Amulet and/or Valakut. I can see it being an alternative to Hornet Queen that costs much more mana or Thragtusk that isn't enough stabilization vs Affinity or Elves for example.
Settle the Wreckage is an instant speed 4cmc wrath. Can't deny the blow out.
Other potential cards barely make the cut for me, or are too obscure to figure out what can be done on paper. Red and Black look like crap for Modern so far.
Wanted Scoundrels and Old-Growth Dryads are unplayable because giving the opponent tempo is directly against the purpose of playing undercosted creatures. Even "when (card) comes into play each opponent may draw up to three cards" is POSSIBLY okay in theory.
I don't think dinosaurs are meant to be playable in non-rotating formats. As reanimation targets their ability has to be very unique. Not impressed by Carnage Tyrant. It's not even that big and what's the point of having a hexproof uncounterable creature against control if it doesn't have evasion? Control decks play their own finishers that can block or race yours. Inkwell Leviathan is played in Vintage because most opponents have islands.
My pet card is Ruin Raider. I'm hoping having a critical mass of these creatures might make something grindy viable.

Trample is sort of evasion, it usually works fine enough.

Trample is a great evasion against control, they have at best tokens, or Gideon that will die in one attack. This creature is meant to be played in Pact decks, and that's an upgrade to the other existing models.
Sanctum Seeker is a bad Hellrider to me, and if the latter was a bomb in standard, it's nowhere to be found in Modern. Vampires is the worst tribe I'm aware of in terms of synergy. All the best vampires are actually played in non-vampire decks because they all do sthg apart : Olivia Voldaren, Bloodghast, Viscera Seer, Insolent Neonate. Total bummer and that set doesn't seem to help the tribe much so far... :/

Pioneer - A bunch of stuff Modern - Humans Legacy - Grixis Phoenix / Death & Taxes
In terms of cards Humans might be happy with, there are Wanted Scoundrels (for efficiency at a price some combo decks can't exploit without wasting combo pieces/turns--Ad Nauseam, UR Storm, and Amulet Titan have some trouble killing this guy pre-board) and Kitesail Freebooter (2-mana, 1/2, flying cross between Mesmeric Fiend and Sin Collector).
I'm not sure how good Wily Goblin will be. I'd say never underestimate the ability to make Lotus Petals for cheap, though.
We're looking at Siren Stormtamer. It's looking promising for Blue Steel as a flying way to protect more important creatures and deal with a Burn card or targeted discard, but it does compete with Spellskite.
Overflowing Insight draws 7 cards for 7 mana. Pretty efficient, but the cost is steep for this sorcery.
Conqueror's Galleon may have promise in Eldrazi Tron as a Vehicle that transforms into a powerful--if mana-hungry--land after being Crewed and swung with.

If I'm not mistaken, don't we only have the PW deck version?
Nope.

As for a UG version of Merfolk I'd just swap out Aether Vial for Noble Hierarch and Master of Waves for CoCo (and bump it to 4x).
The new 1-drop isn't playable imho.
Tooth & Nail........Grishoalbrand....Living Dominance....Tezzerator.........Vannifar Pod

Big Johnny.
Is it better than Bloodrage Brawler (that no one plays) ?
If push didn't exist, I'd say you could ride it out. If Goyf isn't good rightnow, this can't be better.
You can fetch BSkull, SoFaI, Smuggler's Copter, etc...

Sorcerous Spyglass is a fine tool for Lantern and/or UB Tezz.
Hostage Taker is a bomb without a clear home yet.
Shapers' Sanctuary is a fine SB card.
Carnage Tyrant is a fine SB card in these days where UWx control is a real deck.
Siren Stormtamer is a good 1-drop for any blue Vial deck.
Kopala, Warden of Waves will see playtest in Merfolk. Can be split with Kira for the most undecided ones.
Tocatli Honor Guard is a fine SB card.
Settle the Wreckage is an instant speed 4cmc wrath. Can't deny the blow out.

Read the flavor text "The reward's not worth it"
The 4/3 body is not worth giving the opponent two Lotus Petals when it dies.
