Here's some things you can do with it:
- T1 Bloom, do whatever on T2/3, T4 Ideal
- T3 Wargate into Bloom, T4 Ideal
- draw both halves and hardcast them
- draw one piece, Wargate for the other (using Bloom to get to 6 mana)
The tough part is, unlike Ad Nauseam, your kill costs 7 mana (vs AN+Grace which is 6), so you need to hit all your first 4 land drops. Also, you can't play Pentad Prism because it nonbos with Solemnity. The redeeming factor is you don't need to cast Ideal to assemble the lock; you can naturally draw both pieces or use Wargate to get the missing one.
Anyone notice a permanent type missing from Solemnity? It notably doesn't hit planeswalkers.
Yep, one of the first things I noticed. Can't hurt the precious Planeswalkers can we?

Well, 3 mana for "All + abilities on All planeswalkers can't be used" seems kinda nutty when combined with what the card already does.
(Because you can't pay the cost of putting counters on the planeswalker. Funnily enough this card would also shutdown Devoted Druid)
Yep and its selling out across the interwebz at decent prices, here comes the spike.

Is it possible to use Solemnity to build a janky " No Cumulative Upkeep" deck ?
It is like with Torpor Orb/Hushwing Gryff and giant creatures that had negative EtB abilities (only less risky).

I'm sure it's possible. Solemnity opens up a lot of things, and things with Time Counters get a huge buff. Like Thing in the Ice. Yes I would love a 7/8 that returns every creature to everyone's hand for U1. I know suspend doesn't work, but how about Vanishing? I can see Reality Acid coming into play then just wiping everything on board.

Unfortunately, Reality Acid won't do anything with Solemnity out. It won't have a last time counter to remove. You could pair it with Chronozoa to have blockers for days. It won't leave the battlefield immediately and when it does it will always be without time counters.

Sadly the Cumulative Upkeep cards we have in modern are all really underwhelming. Also keep in mind that you can only play them after you dropped Solemnity as it only prevents cards from getting new counters. It does not remove counters that are already there.
The Thing in the Ice interaction doesn't work. Thing only flips when it has no counters on it after an ice counter was removed. If it never has any counters on it to begin with, it will never flip.
Edit:Reality Acid does become Vindicate with this on board...but is that really worth it? doesn't even work Chronozoa is hilarious, especially with a sac outlet. Lost Auramancers+Solemnity+Sac Outlet lets you cheat Omniscience into play on turn 4. That doesn't seem too shabby especially since it curves out well, but it doesn't leave much room to interact/actually dig for the combo and even then you don't win on the spot. Heck it's probably better to search for something different than Omniscience, suggestions besides Phyrexian Unlife?

I believe it does allow to not put any counters on Thing in the Ice there's talk about it hating on Walking Ballista and it's similar there. That said, you can just do Omniscience into Enter the Infinite into Release the Ants flipping Emrakrul route.

It's not that it does not allow you to not put counters on it. TiTi definitely enters the battlefield without counters on them. But TiTi is worded differently than say Dark Dephts (which works with Solemnity).
'Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, remove an ice counter from Thing in the Ice. Then if it has no ice counters on it, transform it.'
That all belongs together and the second sentence only triggers after removing an Ice counter by playing an instant or sorcery spell.
Playing Enter the Infinite makes it a (pretty sweet) 4 card combo. 4 card combos are not playable in modern.

aaahhhh i see. good catch. So this basically helps a bunch of undying and persist creatures.
So are we saying Thing in the Ice will enter the battlefield with no ice counters if Solemnity is in play. Then if you cast an instant or sorcery, Titi will flip over to Awoken Horror? Just want to get it straight.
I'll quote this from Wizards ruling on Titi.
Removing all ice counters from Thing in the Ice some other way will not cause it to transform. You’ll need to cast an instant or sorcery spell and cause its last ability to trigger.

Im going with no. For the most part, magic cards happen in order. And because it says "remove the counter when you cast. THEN flip if it has no ice counters." I read that as "You have to remove one to trigger the flip."
I lied. There is no "If you do, then do this" It will diff flip it.
Thing in the Ice does not flip automatically. If flips if two conditions are met: you cast an instant or sorcery AND it has no counters left on it. It does not flip without meeting both conditions. A Thing that had all its counters removed some other way will NOT transform without casting another instant or sorcery to trigger the flip. There was a lot of discussion about this with Vampire Hexmage when Thing was first spoiled.
Re: Fraying Sanity
Longtime Mill player here (my guilty MTGO pleasure), and Sanity is probably not playable. It doesn't mill alone, which means it doesn't help you from behind and it's a ***** topdeck lategame when you're trying to close. At three mana, it means tapping out at sorcery speed on a critical turn with no immediate mill payoff. T3 Funeral is okay because you can follow with T4 instant speed Incursion, Shelldock, or Visions to pull the game out of reach or reload, but Sanity doesn't facilitate any of those plans.

Correct. The ability to remove counters is the same ability that flips the Thing. You need to trigger the ability to flip the Thing.
This is probably done specifically because of how Dark Depths was written.
Solemnity is on the battlefield. TiTi is cast and enters with NO counters. Which happens?
1. TiTi remains a 0/4 creature and cannot flip because it cannot have a counter removed.
2. TiTi will flip to Awoken Horror if you cast an instant or sorcery.

Solemnity on BF. Thing enters with 0 counters. You then cast an instant or sorcery and Thing triggers to remove a counter. No counters are removed, because it had none to begin with, so Thing transforms.
Hostile Desert is a 2 mana plus eat a land in the graveyard to activate 3/4. With fetches, most modern decks naturally have lands in the grave, and being colorless to activate means any deck could use it.
Realistically it probably still fails right? I mean a draw to the manlands are they are duels, and decks that want to use a mana land and has fetches likely doesnt want a colorless land, and has access to the other manlands.

I think it's close. Needs Fatal Push to be a smaller portion of the metagame to have a chance, but it's a weird intermediary between Mutavault and the larger creature lands. I think it's more an issue of finding a home than lacking power.

I actually think this card is better in Faeries than mutavault. They will have to adjust the mana a bit to include more fetches, but the biggest issue with that deck is closing speed. This card is much better at that. Yes, yes, I understand that 'vault is a faerie, but really the only synergy it has in the deck anymore is with SSS and that's fringey. The bigger issue is closing games out and this helps with that more than mutavault.

There are some decent cards that can be very good without paying their upkeep cost like:
Phyrexian Soulgorger, Sheltering Ancient, Vexing Sphinx and Jötun Grunt.
Also Krovikan Whispers becomes Control Magic and Survivor of the Unseen does a decent (repeatable) Brainstorm/See Beyond impression.
