First off, I don't really live in a town with any sort of modern meta, however! I live close-ish to towns that do, and will be moving to a town that does
I do live with my boyfriend who obviously plays Magic as well, and he's gonna be building a budget illusion deck, and we're hoping to get a grasp on modern before actually getting into it, if that makes sense? Either way, I really like the idea of soul sisters, and I REALLY like bant hexproof
problem is, I'm not really wanting to spend tons of money on a deck I won't be playing as much against other people for the next little while.. Anyone know of decks similar to this, or budget versions of them? Or, any suggestions for beginner decks on a budget? Thanks everyone
Edit: As for budget, I'd like to start out around the 100 dollar range, I'm thinking starting a budget version of decks I like then building up as I trade into things or whenever I pick up cards!

It would not be difficult to make a budget version of Bogles, which is a GW Hexproof deck. A lot of players don't like playing against it, though. The thread for Bogles can be found here; the most expensive cards should be the land base, in my experience, and there are budget options for that.
Also, whenever you ask for budget decks, it's probably best that you specify your budget level. A $200 deck is usually considered budget in Modern, but for a lot of people that would not be a budget option at all.
Hope this helps.

Well, I can saw a woman in two, but you won't wanna look in the box when I'm through.

This is definitely helpful ^
Do you have a preferred playstyle that you have developed from playing in other formats? And if you and your boyfriend are planning to both build, are you looking to aim your decks towards having even and fun matchups against each other? My girlfriend and I both play Modern, and I think if we had built two decks with a very lop-sided matchup, we might not have played against each other as often.
If there is already a more expensive deck that you really like the look of, but just can't afford right now, I highly recommend building a budget version of that, and slowly filling in the pieces. It might not be as good as an actual budget deck at first, but Modern decks are forever <3 (Well, usually).
I also highly recommend printing out some proxies and testing different decks with your boyfriend. When I first got into Modern, I was certain I wanted to play a combo deck, but after testing, I realized that I would not want to play this deck for a long period of time, and that my girlfriend would just be miserable playing against me. This is also a great way to learn more about the various higher tiered decks in Modern!
-Hopefully some of that is helpful. The format can be intimidating, but it really is wonderful, so I hope you enjoy delving into it!
proxy out decks before you commit to buy. i have multiple modern decks and some i really like to play and others while they may be very good at winning i dont really like them because of the play style. Boggles is a good deck and would fit the play style you are looking for but like the other guy said people hate playing against it because it is prolly the least interactive deck in modern. also a really helpful tool is mtggoldfish it has a decent meta game breakdown and prices out decks for you.

Soul Sisters is one of the cheaper established decks in Modern (~$250) and you can make a decent budget version (~$50).
Definitely proxy a bunch of decks and play them a lot to find out what you like. What seems great in your mind may not be that great when you are playing with it game after game as your main deck.

I do a LOT of tron-esque decks, so that's why I was thinking a sorta' bogles deck including aura's like Eldrazi Conscription could be neat! I think me and him are gonna proxy some decks and see what works, after looking through this thread He's planning on doing a mono blue illusions deck, using Lord of the Unreal
I do wanna be able to play my deck outside the house, but it's so hard when you don't know a meta, but I do know a few people fairly local who play modern, so I guess I could sorta go off that, and then sideboard some stuff that'd be useful in most played decks?
Thanks everyone, btw! everyone's been super helpful so far

I'd suggest tracking down a copy of the Modern Event Deck WotC released a few years ago, you can get them for about $85-95 still, has a decent amount of staples that can transfer to other decks later, and can be upgraded over time. The deck itself is a budget BW Tokens list, and isn't awful right out of the box, easily upgraded as well and several cards you'll want for upgrading it are very cheap currently cause of either being in standard still or in MM3.
